I got two of these. One for my Genesis and one for my Master System. I love them! I couldn't believe the difference it made on my TV. If you're using a TV bigger than 27" to play retro games this cable is a necessity. To make it look even better, use 4:3 mode that these systems were designed for so you don't get any image stretch. I'm glad you did this video. I've been telling everyone I can about the quality of these cables. It was a long wait from Kickstarter to now, but totally worth it!
I got mine on the 32 CRT RCA and its amazing man. Americans were just so screwed when it came to getting the best picture from audio and video back in the 80's and 90's. These cables are the light!
Immortal John Mr.Hancock! Been with you and your channel for few years now and admittedly not such a tech nerd so I'm just in awe of your collection of Sega Master System which initially attached me to this channel forever! Obviously I'm a Sega Genesis guy but the few of us here in the states with the Sega Master System previously is a very nostalgic loyal and faithful gamers.
As it stands now, I've only been able to get my Genesis to play on a CRT, so this cable sounds great! I will have to pick one up when they get them back in stock. Either that or I will need to mod my console, which might be fun. Great video!
If I wasn't already running my Genesis/32x/CD through an RGB Scart to HDMI converter I'd probably seriously consider this. Not sure how it compares but it definitely sounds like a cleaner option.
Thanks for bringing these cables to our attention! I really hope hdretrovision also make HD Cables for Gamecube and Sega Saturn. Gamecube Component Cables are insanely overpriced at $250 - $300 dollars, so if they make those cables at a reasonable price level then they can take my money. I'm in for those SNES HD Cables as soon as they're in stock. Thanks again!
Just picked up this cable with the Saturn adapter, and was pretty blown away by how much better the Saturn looked. Just wish the Elgato would capture a 240p component signal.
I did this back when the Genesis was current, but I made the cable myself for about $2 cost. If you have a TV with RGB (Component) inputs, you don't need any fancy electronics, just a cable.
I own a pair of these and I LOVE THEM! They do NOT offer higher resolution they do however put out a nice sharp RGB signal that provides such a massive improvement over composite and RF. These are simpler than getting RGB scart and converter boxes as well. Many say SCART is still better but I really can NOT complain about how bloody good these make my sega genesis look.
Very small difference between this and true RGB. RGB is better because it sends the color information directly, component needs to be calibrated to achieve the same color accuracy. HD Retrovision cables also add a TINY amount of lag, (1us or ~ 0.00006 frames according to HD Retrovision FAQ). So technically, they're not better than SCART, but who would ever notice?
Kacy DaGameNerd I'm calling this guy out on his BS. Both ways look EXACTLY the same and will always look the same NO MATTER what wire you use. The wire WILL not make a better picture when the sega it's self only pushes out a certain resolution. It's like trying to turn apples into oranges
Operation Arch Angles you have got to be kidding me or you're blind. its so much more clear using the right cables. you really should do some more research on RGB over a composite signal...
because your mind is saying, "oh wow looks clear" cuz you were "told it does" Please come on now... if i take a gallon of water and pour it down 1 inch pipe, draining into a bucket, then do the same with a 2 inch pipe, 1 gallon of water will still drain into the bucket
I wasn't even aware this existed until today. Recently getting back into retro consoles I purchased my beloved Sega MegaDrive. I have it hooked to a REALLY old Aquos LED TV (Circa 2000!) and this TV has an excellent composite decoder. But still, it doesn't look as good as a CRT over composite. I guess the composite signal from the Genesis/MegaDrive is just not as good as other consoles of the era. Well, since this old TV does have component I found and ordered these cables. They are getting pricey now! Thanks for the review John!
ya these cables are so legit. Now i can play my NES with these cables, the image is so clear now. My NES is RGB modded so it supports these cables too. same as my N64RGB
Did you check for how your display handles alternating field 240p flash effects? Most HDTVs don't handle this properly, and you end up with either weird "comb" lines or the effect is completely missing. As such, it can be a deal-breaker for a lot of folks wanting a more accurate viewing experience. Still the best way to do this is to get a Framemeister and RGB cables for your systems to hook into it. The HDretrovision cables are more appropriate to use on CRT displays that have component input jacks.
I didn't know these were so popular with people using HDTV's. For me, they're just the perfect solution for getting "RGB" onto our North American consumer CRT's which didn't have SCART.
I was using a high quality S-video cable before picking these up for the SNES. I thought S-Video was a big improvement over composite but these component cables look fantastic on my Trinitron. So much, so that I've decided to pick up the Sega cables too. The image quality is near emulator-esque sharpness with real scan lines rather than emulated. I think these cables will be highly sought after once they stop producing them.
keep in mind the Framemeister = input lag, i have it, its bad. The HD Retrovision cables have way less input lag. i already packed my framemeister away, im done using it. these cables work for me much better
I'd consider grabbing these when my CRT's die. Thing is, they never seem to die lol. I have 3 36" Sony Wega CRT's from the year 2000 and they are all alive and kicking. So I play my retro games on those beasts. Man are they heavy to move!
Eventually all CRT TVs will die, and not many people fix those TVs anymore unfortunately. The ones that do charge a lot of money to fix them. As long as you keep them clean and in nice shape and don't leave them on for extended periods of time, they should last a good while. I have a CRT from the early 90's, maybe from '91 or '92, that still works fine, so if yours is from 2000 and you keep it in good shape, you should have a good bit of life left on it.
i bought both cables and they look great. the genesis one is better. I see a big difference in the look. The snes is better than before but a little more subtle.
Just a heads up the bois from reddit say there isn’t noticeable lag on a crt some guy ran a test and changed his converted set up in favor of these cables. :)
I have these HD RetroVision cables for 4 systems. I want them for my Genesis, but I am not shelling out $150.00 for them! Don't know why they are so expensive. 😪
I would like one but they're sold out. And I did buy some aftermarket AV cables for model 1 and model 2 and because the warriors were so thin I got a lot of interference on my white part of my screen. Found out that if I have thicker cables on the video that eliminates a lot of that noise. Something that you'll notice on an HDTV
So I seen nobody as of yet doing any reviews on the hyperkin HDMI cable for the Genesis as of yet...it works with all three models and it allows you to go from 3/4 to 16:9
I have a CRT TV with component input, so I asume this cable and my TV would be the ideal way to play. One question, this cable isnt a scaler or upgrader, is it?. I understand it 'pulls' the real image out of the console, am i right?.
I got the HD Retrovision Genesis YPbPr Component Cable for my Sega Genesis. The Upscaler on the component cable needs a 3.5mm power jack. Can you please tell me which 3.5mm power cable to buy? A 2 notch, a 3 notch etc etc? I tried using a 3 notch 3.5mm jack with a USB on the other end. But, it wouldn't power up the Upscaler on the cable. What am I doing wrong. please tell me which power cable to buy.
What's your opinion of this solution today? There are so many HDMI 720p versions available today, but people complain that the pixels don't look crispy or jaggy (desired). Would you say the pixels were crisp and clear using this cable, or were they still a bit fuzzy?
Note the Genesis model-1 only outputs Mono sound through the DIN connector on the back of the system, so you won't get stereo sound from that model with this cable and adapter!
could you explain how the audio cables are connected? I see a 3.5mm headphone jack on the HDR cable' itself (the box in the middle of the cable).... do you connect via sega headphone jack to HDR cable's box via a duel male ended 3.5mm cable. Then the audio red/white rca from HDR toTV?
Nothing new here, it's just an RGB - Component adapter. It still doesn't fix the lack of scan lines, so it's still worthless. I've seen the SNES version of these on my local auction website, and it definitely opens up retro gaming to HDTV users for people who can't justify the XRGB mini. It's probably cheaper just to use SCART cables for each console and use a separate rgb - component adapter/scaler (which addresses the common 240p issues too). That said, I've still got my 28" Bang and Olufsen CRT specifically so I don't have to piss money out my ass trying to get results that are almost as good.
Whats the difference between this and the standard AV cable is that the signal in the av gets cramped into that one yellow video cable where as with this special cable lets the signal run through their native RGB signals therefore reaching your tv "purely" un comprimised. I live in europe and we have these SCART cables wich lets through RGB pure so i just got a model one megadrive cable that ends with one of those scarts n it works just as good. Uhm further more i use a converter to HDMI but try to avoid it, since it doesnt give that ultra clear image as you do with just RGB. But it works for whenever i like to play something on my pc monitor or something.
I have composite cables for my ps2 and let me say it did make a big difference it all depends on the condition of the console and tv I have a 22 inch vizio led TV and it looks great looking to get the retrovision hd cables for my snes I'm doing mods to it led mod I'm painting it metallic black I did the super famicom mod so it can play Japanese games wish they would make a hd composite cable for the nes I have the 24k premium av cables that hooks up 2 cables to the nes and 3 to the tv for better sound quality that's the best I could find without modding it also has mods to it led mod the pins replaced and lockout chip disabled and I have a led modded original nes controller and hyperkin nes controller which is awesome very good quality controller
They do! Only yhing i got a small flickering bar on top of the image...its not a big deal but its not perfect. Weird thing is cables work perfectly on a crt, and component to hdmi converter work flawlessly with other consoles so...yeah...
It depends on your TV's ability to handle 240p and upscale it. Some TVs (like John's Aquos) have very good upscalers built in, so this cable is a good option and will look nearly identical. Recently bought my 1 chip SNES along with the HD Retrovision components. Genesis/Saturn is next! Awesome product, can’t get enough of this stuff 👍.
I just ordered some HD Retrovision for my Genesis should be here today!!
so nice to have options and have the classics moving into the modern era
The cable worked wonders for me. I did an unboxing video of it a few months ago.
As it stands now, I've only been able to get my Genesis to play on a CRT, so this cable sounds great! I will have to pick one up when they get them back in stock. Either that or I will need to mod my console, which might be fun. Great video!

I went down the bank account draining Framemeister Scart rabbit hole.
so did i.. for 6 retro systems lol
In Europe, you just need a Scart and a CRT.
this looks great! gonna have to pick one up though my current TV doesn't support 240 from the component. definitely glad I watched this
Just picked it up John.. Got the extension cables and the adapaters for genesis 2 as well. Thanks
I use a model 1 SCART cable hooked into a component converter. It's gorgeous.
Just picked up this cable with the Saturn adapter, and was pretty blown away by how much better the Saturn looked. Just wish the Elgato would capture a 240p component signal.

Loving the fact that you are wearing Altered Beast hat is everything for me!!! Sega

Thanks john I'm definitely going to get one. Know all I need is one that works for my Atari 2600&7800.
Atari 2600 doesn't have RGB graphics output, so this isn't possible.
totally forgot about the HD retrovision cable. I'll have to pick one up. BTW nice hat.
You better get on it. I'm surprised they haven't sold out of the Genesis ones yet.
Have you tried the retrovision cable out yourself? Of course the games are going to look similar in his video, the camera doesn't do the game justice.
Operation Arch Angles you have got to be kidding me or you're blind. its so much more clear using the right cables. you really should do some more research on RGB over a composite signal...

I'm from europe, and i use an RGB cable. Its not perfect, but i think is enough for me. The diference between RGB and composite is astounding.
A.V. Cables are fine to me. I grew up using The RF switch. Av looks like HD compared to RF.
One look at these cables in real life and you'll be jizzing everywhere.
I play most games in 480P through Wii emulation. I also have my N64 and my NES hooked up to my CRT.
ya these cables are so legit. Now i can play my NES with these cables, the image is so clear now. My NES is RGB modded so it supports these cables too. same as my N64RGB
I can go one better, I still play all my Mega Drive games in PAL 50Hz on an actual CRT monitor with AV composite. 60Hz does nothing for me.
@@chigimonky is that the goal?
These work great! I got mine to work on my Sega CDX :)
Ivalice VKP Does that mean it will work on my X Eye?
As budget collector the price kills me, but it's still cool to know this is out there.
very nice
Thank you for sharing this. About to run over and do the 240p test.

Awesome!!! I have an HDMI to PS2 adaptor and another one for connecting my Wii
Already have a model 1 modded for component and stereo. But I'm hoping for GameCube version of this!
Yes, Considering how much Gamecube component cables go for now I'm surprised somebody hasn't reversed engineered them yet.
I just use a white backwards compatible wii with component cables for gc titles.
It has proprietary hardware in it. Apparently it's very hard to duplicate.
Thanks for the info! Bookmarked the site!
Looks decent... Definitely an improvement over the standard AV, things look a bit sharper for sure.
Love your name.
OstrichesAndGin Yours is better!
Fifty bucks sharper though?
keep in mind the Framemeister = input lag, i have it, its bad.
The HD Retrovision cables have way less input lag. i already packed my framemeister away, im done using it. these cables work for me much better
RideRedRacer You should atleast give the Framemeister away
I bought a framemeister, then sold it a month later. Very overrated, for input lag as u mentioned and the fact it's huge.
Seriously? For $400, I'd expect extremely little input lag.
Wow good to know. Do you just hook the rgb cable to your composite plugs?
It's a rip off, get an OSSC for half the price. It's better in every way
My First tv was also black and white. I had my Sinclair Spectrum plugged into it permanently.
Don't play Sonic 3 or Sonic and Knuckles 3D bonus stage with a black and white TV blue and red look pretty much the same
Neat, might have snag some of these. Currently using a custom scart cable (ebay) which runs to a converter box so I can connect using component.
I'd consider grabbing these when my CRT's die. Thing is, they never seem to die lol. I have 3 36" Sony Wega CRT's from the year 2000 and they are all alive and kicking. So I play my retro games on those beasts. Man are they heavy to move!

Do they have component input? If so, you can use these cables.
Cool video. Thanks.
sharp tvs are the Ferrari of tvs keep that in mind John even if there old especially hd
My Sharp LCD HDTV is 10 years old and works great after semi-regular use.
I use a CRT for everything else though
i bought both cables and they look great. the genesis one is better. I see a big difference in the look. The snes is better than before but a little more subtle.
I was pretty bummed to learn they're not compatible with the Elgato. Hopefully an update will come out to fix that!
I like the new intro :)
Thankfully we got rgb scart in europe. usa definitely missed out on that in the 90s.
john loves that hat lol
Watching this out of order because I want to hook my Genesis and whatever to my capture card.
It would be nice if you how the cables hook up.
Just a heads up the bois from reddit say there isn’t noticeable lag on a crt some guy ran a test and changed his converted set up in favor of these cables. :)
but none the less great video brother its kick ass that it was jump started
Get one before prices rise any further than they already have! $7 more today for the set than when John reviewed them a year and a half ago.
Interestingly that "Sega Model 2" cable also supports certain Sega Saturn Models as well.
This is a cool concept but when I'm a little bit concerned about is the aspect ratio being preserved.
did they finally get a second production run in??!! I have been waiting forever for them to come out with more!
I have these HD RetroVision cables for 4 systems. I want them for my Genesis, but I am not shelling out $150.00 for them! Don't know why they are so expensive. 😪
I'd like to see how it stands against RGB scart.
I am interested in the cable.
the "highlander" john hancock
Well said. Graphics doesn't matter
If graphics don't matter, then play Infocom text adventure games.
I would like one but they're sold out. Found out that if I have thicker cables on the video that eliminates a lot of that noise. Something that you'll notice on an HDTV
I wonder how this compares to a pvm using scart. Thats my current setup but i might check these out if the price is right.
Hi John where can I purchase the cable from? Can you please provide a link? Thanks for the videos!
You can just get an HD cable that works for all Genesis consoles plus color will pop out a little better.
Pretty cool, I wonder if it works with the Sega CD as well? I would assume yes due to being the same output...
It should because it works on my Sega CDX.
Yeah I thought so. Pretty cool stuff
So I seen nobody as of yet doing any reviews on the hyperkin HDMI cable for the Genesis as of yet...it works with all three models and it allows you to go from 3/4 to 16:9
Mad Little Pixel did one but couldn't get it to work on a model one. Others didn't have that problem.
I hope they're restocking their supply soon. These cables are going for waaaay too much on ebay :(
Looks great but yeah it looks better if you use a crt tv or even better a pvm.
Blaze yeah. pvm are awesome. Even composite looks amazing in them
Are they sturdy John?
@John Hancock The site for these guys isn't operational now... Any other suggestions?
Cool
How would I hook up my original Sega Genesis to my Onkyo receiver, it only accepts HDMI, including the audio. They are no RCA inputs for it
I have a CRT TV with component input, so I asume this cable and my TV would be the ideal way to play. One question, this cable isnt a scaler or upgrader, is it?. I understand it 'pulls' the real image out of the console, am i right?.
I just tried the 240p component test on the HD Retrovision website. My TV won't support it. 😫
Your clueless that’s the problem
What's your opinion of this solution today? There are so many HDMI 720p versions available today, but people complain that the pixels don't look crispy or jaggy (desired). Would you say the pixels were crisp and clear using this cable, or were they still a bit fuzzy?
Still a great option for original hardware.
these cables will hook up to a CRT also if your tv supports 240p and its the most beautiful image you will ever see on your CRT
Note the Genesis model-1 only outputs Mono sound through the DIN connector on the back of the system, so you won't get stereo sound from that model with this cable and adapter!
this cable has a stereo input on it. so you can put a wire from the front of the model one and get stereo sound. and these cables are amazing
Did these cables not work with the Elgato or was your Elgato issue unrelated? Whether or not it works with the Elgato would be a huge factor for me.
could you explain how the audio cables are connected? I see a 3.5mm headphone jack on the HDR cable' itself (the box in the middle of the cable).... do you connect via sega headphone jack to HDR cable's box via a duel male ended 3.5mm cable. Then the audio red/white rca from HDR toTV?
Hey John I have a question for you. love your show btw. but my Genesis will only play in B&W and I have a Sony Trinitron will this work like a scart?
Nothing new here, it's just an RGB - Component adapter. It still doesn't fix the lack of scan lines, so it's still worthless. I've seen the SNES version of these on my local auction website, and it definitely opens up retro gaming to HDTV users for people who can't justify the XRGB mini. I'm not familiar with Sonic games, but why did this red Sonic suddenly become much bigger?
sold out GGGRR!!!!
I have composite cables for my ps2 and let me say it did make a big difference it all depends on the condition of the console and tv I have a 22 inch vizio led TV and it looks great looking to get the retrovision hd cables for my snes I'm doing mods to it led mod I'm painting it metallic black I did the super famicom mod so it can play Japanese games wish they would make a hd composite cable for the nes I have the 24k premium av cables that hooks up 2 cables to the nes and 3 to the tv for better sound quality that's the best I could find without modding it also has mods to it led mod the pins replaced and lockout chip disabled and I have a led modded original nes controller and hyperkin nes controller which is awesome very good quality controller
question where did you get that hat?
Would these work using a component to HDMI upscaler?
They do! Only yhing i got a small flickering bar on top of the image...its not a big deal but its not perfect. Weird thing is cables work perfectly on a crt, and component to hdmi converter work flawlessly with other consoles so...yeah...
Hi John, i would like to buy Genesis system for my cartridge which one you recommend fod me to buy ? Same goes for NES & SNES too
i need that hat
Would you say that these cables look better than using RGB from using a scart cable ran to a framemeister?
I dont have a framemeister so i cant say.
It depends on your TV's ability to handle 240p and upscale it. Some TVs (like John's Aquos) have very good upscalers built in, so this cable is a good option and will look nearly identical.
The key difference is that the Framemeister is a purpose-built gaming upscaler while built-in TV scalers are general-purpose and may introduce more lag.
I've got both, and for the vast majority of displays, the Framemeister will look infinitely better (and perform with significantly less lag), especially with integer-based custom profiles. Every HDTV I've seen either doesn't handle 240p signals, or it handles them very poorly (muddy upscaling), or incorrectly (comb lines during flash shadows or other alternating field effects).
Any idea how this compares to doing RGB through a Framemeister John?
See, I would get one of these but connect them to a component to HDMI converter box.
Hello Kermit.
What kind of video camera do you use?
framemeister all the way!
What about the Saturn John
I just got some Sega genesis 1 and need power supply any one got suggestion where to get Amazon has a lot with bad reviews
Link down, they don't make this anymore?
Is this better than using rgb to component converter?
[KITT3N _ SL4Y3R] It’s basically the same thing, so most likely no.
Is there a component cable for Sega genesis?
Would this work for the at games mini Sega genesis?
soft MOD a wii use component or Wii 2hdmi, run Genesis gx add filters looks fantastic.
I did this for a long time but for me I got sick of any input lag at all. I know alot of people say they don't notice it but it's definitely there even on a CRT. These cables have been awesome. The image is perfect and absolutely no input lag.
