One additional tip: round the corners before applying Leukotape. This lessons the chance of it catching on your sock and peeling at the edges.
Awesome suggestion. Thanks for the tidbit of info. Always looking to pass good info along to others that may help out there on the trail.
Necessity is the mother of invention. Like your tip on the the wax paper!
The advantage leukotape has over bandaids or moleskin is the superior adhesive that is on the other side of the cotton tape. Concerning the adhesive with moleskin, they do tell you to rub the adhesive side with your fingers until it gets warm, then apply. Supposedly this serves to activate the adhesive better. However, I have not tried this, so cannot comment. With adding a softening material (author here elected to use toilet paper), bandaids are no longer necessary. I might add that a nonstick soft material could serve better than toilet paper, but that is just something else you have to carry.
Moleskin: Does it have a purpose? It is designed not to cover, but to surround. That is why it is thicker than leukotape. You use one to several layers to build up a "castle wall", like a donut, around the blister or serious hot spot. Therefore, the blister never makes contact or friction. The only question is the adhesive. Will rubbing it activate it enough to keep it in place? I don't know. If not, I suppose one can surround the moleskin with leukotape.
The theory behind moleskin is superior. I suppose one can use leukotape in a similar fashion as moleskin, but you will need twice the amount of tape because leukotape is half the thickness. I am going to put it and leukotape to the test on our upcoming rim to rim to rim Grand Canyon trek. I know myself and one other person that is going develops hot spots and blisters (despite great shoes and socks) after so many footfalls (17 miles it seems for us, and that is flat ground). Having that knowledge ahead of time will in theory help us prevent or at least deal with the hot spot or blister. We know ahead of time where it will happen because we have put in the miles ahead of time. We all have a final 30 mile flat ground walk to test this out, but the ultimate test will be the actual trek. Will let you know.
Thanks for informative video.
Thanks for checking out my video and explaining in detail for the viewers. Appreciate it.
Leukotape is just a brand name of Kinesiology tape. You can pick up many other brands or store brand Kinesiology tape in any drug store or Walmart with the paper backing already on it and in 16 foot rolls pre-perfed every 12 inches for about half the price of Leukotape. When you cut it to cover hot spots on your feet you should round the corners, it prevents lifting and coming loose or bunching. Same with the Moleskin. Make sure your feet are completely dry. Coat your feet with a good dry antiperspirant like Degree before you put your socks and shoes back on it cuts down on friction. Change your socks often and let them dry hanging on your pack keeping spares. We use both Mole skin and Kinesiology tape in the military in our med kits to take care of our feet.
This video is going on 3 years old now but even so I still don't like using moleskin for anything anymore. I have never had leukeotape ever come off my feet except when I want it to. So no issues there. Unfortunately as a hiker, I don't carry antiperspirant out with me on the trail for hot spots. But if your putting it on before you feel a hot spot or already have a foot issue when you get out of your car that's an excellent idea. I know military personal do know how to take care of their feet. Your experience with this is priceless. Thanks for the info and for your service to our country. ~RVA~
Kinesiology tape and leukotape P are not the same thing. One is stretchy the other is not. Kinesiology tape found in drug stores are heavily branded and marketed, and thus are also more expensive. Also, the stretchy variety (leukotape K) does not adhere quite as long as the "P" variety. Moleskin will quit immediately if it gets wet.
I have tried sooo many different tapes for feet application, because I want to do thru-florida. Moleskin, KT tape, Leukotape, different Band-aid, Nexcare, etc. Leukotape is the ONLY one that can stay put and didn't bump up under my feet, no matter how wet my skin became.
The downside of Leukotape is the adhesive can penetrate to the other side of the tape, and adhered to socks. Bit of annoying, but acceptable.
Absolutely! Leukotape is king! Its's not perfect, but the best solution that I can find after much trial and error. Maybe sock liners specifically when you use leukotape so they don't ruin your socks? Thanks for watching!
@@RVAHikerGirl why not put the wax paper you just took off the sticky side onto the not-sticky side before you put the sock back on. You already have the wax paper with you, and you're just going to ball it up and carry it out anyway.
@@GetUpTheMountains Not sure I understand what your saying here. If you are peeling off the wax paper and sticking the leukotape on your foot you have nothing to stick the wax paper back onto. Its just trash like a bandaid backing would have and yes you would pack that out.
@@RVAHikerGirl JQ Tian mentions the adhesive penetrating the tape and sticking to his socks. Thats the adhesive you'd apply the way paper to so you have an impenetrable barrier between the tape and the sock.
I have a friend while hiking the Wonderland Trail used Leukotape and Vaseline (which creates a barrier between the sock and the tape).
I love using vaseline on my feet at night and put my camp socks on to sleep in. It does wonders for repairing your feet. Thanks Marcia for stopping by my channel and watching my video.
I prefer Moleskin to Leuko tape but do add strapping tape on top so stays put for a few days - I add it on long hikes from the start on my heals as believe prevention is better than getting a blister
Different things work for different people. Glad you found a bandage system that works great for you. I love Leukotape because it doesn't come off after stream crossings and sweat from extremely hot temps. It only comes off when I take it off. I haven't had that same sort of luck with Moleskin or bandaids. Moleskin always slides around on my foot and tends to be everywhere except where I actually need it.
Thank you so much! It’s my first fire season and the blisters are real!
Yes they are and when your feet hurt, nobody is happy! Glad it helped!
think im gonna buy a roll of these off amazon, its less then $15 USD, and it seems like heaven! I have semi deformed toes, and broken my feet, toes, ankles all that many times from extreme sports. well got heavily into climbing awhile back, and the hikes was killing my feet, and I realized that I legit had to mole skin my entire first three toes on each foot because the way the toes sit on one another, and over lap cause massive blisters. I am gonna try this now, cause im gonna be getting back into climbing again soon , and hiking alot more, and gonna need something.
those rolls legit, are very long, and seem like they will work great thank you for the video!
I hope it helps. It really is a dream product.
How could anybody get the thumbs down on this one , this is definitely a game change in video With the toilet paper that makes a lot of sense
Every UA-camr gets a troll from time to time LOL. But thank you for the thumbs up. Leukotape it amazing stuff.
Thank you. You made more sense than some of the doctors on this site.
Oh goodness! So happy it helped. ~RVA~
I love the wax paper and gauze suggestions! So awesome!
I carry it that way in every pack I have. Its a necessity for me. Leukotape is the best stuff ever. Ive even seen someone wrap it around their trail shoe when it blew out until that could get to town to buy a new pair.
@@RVAHikerGirl that sounds about right! I had to repair my CNOC bladder with it several trips ago, and it's still holding. I've worried about un-sticking it from the roll and still having it stick properly, but I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet and give this a try (so I can stop carrying that enormous roll).
@@WanderingSwitchback Oh yes. I am a gram counter. Any tag, any little thing I can cut off, or get rid of to lighten my bag, I search for! LOL!
Excellent video it’s really informative, I’ve been running multiple miles trying to prepare for BCT and got a mean blister. This will help a lot I definitely got recommend this to anyone going into the military with all the long runs & ruck marching.
So glad it helped you! Thanks for watching!
Very good review. I have been looking for a good tape for blisters and this looks ideal. Thanks Steve.
You have found it. Highly recommend leukotape! ~RVA~
Thanks for the tip!! It is that time of year when we Coloradans spend every minute outside! This was just the trick I needed after too many hours in the Rockies today! Again, big thanks!!

@@RVAHikerGirl I happily passed on your tips and a link to your channel to all my hiking pals; I only wish is I could pass it on to all the out of state “friends” we get here! I live in the same county as RMNP, and I go there often. I think I’m going to pack a few extra “butterflies” like you made, and extra strips. Out of staters come woefully over-packed and worse the one who come UNDER-packed! I once led a group of French teens visiting here for the summer on a hike of the Park , chose a only slightly difficult, mostly gorgeous hike. Naturally, gave everyone a list of what to wear, sunscreen, water, etc. As I was making my way through the group, starting at the lead position and making my way to the end to catch any stragglers I found more than one kid in basically flip-flops/shower shoes and tried to hide my alarm. When I questioned the kid en français, she says back to me in English “We are French! We do not hike!” I tried not to react, just with a bright “Alright, let me know if you need anything!” In my head I am screaming do French teens get blisters, broken ankles, sprains, sun burn?? Gratefully, there were no incidents and the hike included a small alpine creek that several kids had there feet in as we stopped for lunch. I’m guessing you have a ton of stories just as crazy as mine! And I would love to hear them along with your tips on how to avoid, mitigate what could go south really fast! Here in CO, every year we get a handful of sad stories of hikers who forgot one of the essentials (Be prepared for a change in weather conditions! My favourite!) and suffers the consequences. Keep up your terrific channel!!
@@alicetulllyhall1 I try my hardest to be prepared. But circumstances are always going to happen that are out of your control. I guess my biggest advice is to stay calm and logically think about what you have and how you can repurpose what you have to make what you need out there. If you carry everything and the kitchen sink you're too heavy. And you're miserable. Glad the video helped and thank you so much for sharing. I have lots of diff vids. Hiking food, tips but mostly my hikes. Hiking vlogs are my fav to make. Happy Trails!

Small bubble bubble wrap! I bring about a sq foot of small bubble bubble wrap, scisors & leukotape. If I'm getting a hotspot I put leukotape P on the hot spot. If I have a blister I wrap just enough bubble wrap & then hold it in place with leukotape P. Game changer!
Happy you found what works best for you. Never heard of recycling bubble wrap in that way, but kudos to you for that idea. ~RVA~
just buy a pack of sticker paper. remover the sticker material and transfer some leukotape to the sticker backing. I just had some blisters on my last hiking trip. thanks for confirming my solution!
Interesting idea with the sticker paper. I can buy a whole role of wax paper from the dollar store and use it for other things too. So this works best for me. But I am all about finding new ways of doing things.
Headed to the Sierras with some training blisters. Super helpful! Thanks!
You are certainly welcome! Have fun in the Sierras!
I'm assuming, with all the VA-hike info, that you're a Virginian yourself. Well-fellow Virginian here (Alexandria/Mt. Vernon, area, but now living in Seoul, ROK)! Found your video only today. Great advice. Am doing my third hike across South Korea, and instead of taking the whole dang roll of Leukotape, I'll be using your hack. Thanks so much!
Yes I am a Virginian! Thanks for stopping by and checking out my channel. Yes carry leukotape like this is such a great hack! I always carry it this way now, since I figured this way out! Nothing is better on trail than leukotape that's for sure!
Nice video but the moleskin is used by cutting out a circle where the blister would be. So the idea is to cushin around the blister but do not have the moleskin over top of the blister. :-)
No matter how you use it, the moleskin does not stay in place when you are hiking, sweating and crossing streams like the leukotape does. You can even submerge luekotape in water and it's still not come off until you peep it off. Many reasons to love that product. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. ~RVA~
Neat hack... thanks... and I have a mess of gauze my MD gave me after I had a bike accident.
Thanks, I hope the video helps ppl to carry items with more than 1 use and allows them to hike more comfortably without dealing with band-aids. ~RVA~

best to prevent blister is still Duck tape , cheap and so effective...
I've tried duck tape before in a bind and it pulled off my skin. I still prefer Leukotape. Thanks for the suggestion. ~RVA~

I'm curious to know if the wax sticks to the leukotape's adhesive when it gets hot/melty?
Sorry, I am just now seeing these. Sometimes it. can if I have had a piece around for a while. It may take a little longer than pulling the backing off a band-aid. But it still works for me. Love leukotape, its really the best thing out there for hikers to carry with them.
Thanks for the tips.

leukotape k and p is different. p one advertise strength, k advertise comfort, mobility etc with reliable adhesion.
have you tried the K one? i cant seem to find p one in my country.
I have only used the p variety. Not sure how the K works. What country do you live in?
@@RVAHikerGirl Indonesia, I could get from abroad, but it's kinda painful and expensive process, I could get k one here for 10 bucks total, so I'm gonna go with that, I'm not sure if it could hold in trench warfare, but I hope it'll hold if I happen to get blister on my short hike.
@@mr.2minutes161 I wouldn't know anything about trench warefare lol but it's held on my feet and toes for 5 days plus until I pulled it off. And even then it didn't want to come off. Hope that helps.
Quick question, why you didn't put it in to a pole? Because it loosen the glue when you pille again?
I pre cut various sizes into strips and into butterfly bandaids. So they are ready to use. I didn’t want the sticky residue in my hiking poles.FYI it does not make the Leukotape any less sticky cutting them and using them this way. Hope this info helps.
I was wondering if you could do a video on what is the best hiking shoes?
Or if you could do a video on a beginner hiking guide like me? I'm new to hiking. I have hiked stony man . I enjoy your channel and your Instagram page.
Good one❤
An oldie, but still lots of great info that is still relevant that hasn't changed.
So you’re suppose to apply this over a blister? How r you suppose to take it off without peeling the blister then?
Add a small piece of toilet paper or you can do a small piece of gauze to cover the blister, like a band aid would. That keeps the sticky part on your skin and not the blister. Hope that makes sense.
I wonder how parchment paper would work. I’d be concerned about wax coming off and making the tape less adhesive.
Try it and let me know. I have a feeling it won't peel off of it. The wax is what allows it to come off without pulling off the adhesive sticky-ness off the back.
can always wrap it around a pen.
Yes you could, but I don't carry a pin with me. Don't need one. Log books at shelters always have pins. But I have seen other backpackers carry one. LOL, so if you carry a pin, yep yep it would work for you.
Are Band-Aid brand cloth bandages Leuko tape with a gauze pad?
No. Leukotape is a super sticky adhesive unlike bandaids. Bandaids will come off when you sweat or get them wet, but Leaukotape won't come off pretty much until you pell it off. But it's the same principle of usage. Hope that helps.
would parchment paper work??
I don’t believe so. Wax paper has that waxy surface that allows the leukotape to peel up off of. Parchment I think would be difficult to remove from.
Parchment paper has silicon rather than wax. When my tape arrives, I’ll test, but my curiosity is will it stick to start. (Hoping it does...I don’t have wax paper around)
@@truepeacenik I agree, it most likely will stick to the parchment paper but the wax paper is a great alternative.
Sticks to my wax paper and won’t release :(
Cheryl Lewis PCT hmmm I’ve never had that problem. Ive had some premade in my pack from last year I just used 2 days ago and it still worked. It doesn’t come off as easy as bandaid paper backing (cuz leuko is a lot stickyer)The wax paper came off in 2-3 pieces when peeled off. Not sure why it didn’t work for you.
RVA Hiker Girl So glad it worked for you! I was feeling sassy and proud of myself but then on trail... nope. Ha 🤦🏼♀️
