      I’ve got more F2F/DT/smart wools than I’d like to admit, and they all are between 50-75% merino. All of them have kept my feet warm wearing Z-trails stepping in all kinds of melted snow puddles. There’s a quick flash of cold then I swear within like 20 seconds I can feel them hearing back up. I wouldn’t run in the snow w sandals but I’ve done many cold miles in soaked merinos and never cease to be amazed. 4 seasons it’s wool everything, briefs, baselayers, socks, gaiters. The only thing I change up is the fabric weight for the season/weather

      You beat me to it! I'm crazy about Injinji socks! I would say the synthetic ones are a tad better at resisting odor and are more durable than the NuWool... But I'm currently using the NuWool exclusively. I agree that they could be a tad tougher and I like the idea of having some silver woven in there.

    Great video. I don't have issues with blisters on recreational hikes, so I must be doing something ok, but I used to have issues in remote areas while firefighting as we wear heavy, steel cap boots and thick woolen socks. Sweaty feet with lots of foot movement in the boot due to the steel cap cavity. I came across a product called Blister Bomber which you apply before you put your socks on. Just rub on spots that you know are prone to blisters and rubbing and I have never had blisters or hot spots since using it. It's a very fine and light lubricant of some sort, but works a darn treat.

    Great video Chase! You're right, when first starting out, I accepted blisters being part of the whole "hiking experience". Mind you, this was with a pair of hiking boots that were way too tight in the toebox area. But still, these were like 20 kilometer outings max with little elevation. Recently I moved to Switzerland and bought a decent pair of hiking boots that have GoreTex lining. I also bought some store brand Decathlon cotton (I know, the horror) hiking socks to go with them. Surprisingly, ever since then I haven't had any problem with blisters forming and I'm doing trails with well over a 1000 meters of elevation now. I suspect it's a combination of a less moisture due to the breathable lining, compression type socks, so they don't move around when going up and down and a hiking boot that fits well (meaning a bit large). And also since I go out hiking every weekend now and even do evening walks after work, my feet got tougher as well. Planning to do my first multiday hike this spring, curious to see how these will hold up. Once I get into through-hikes, I'll be sure to take your advice to heart. Thanks again for the informative video!

  • @AnneArchambault

    I feel there's a lot more to this subject than just promoting this particular brand of socks. Having walked 1000's of kilometers and mostly avoided blisters, I would add the following:
    1) Try to adjust your speed or use poles to minimize chaffing on your feet especially when going downhill.
    2) Avoid waterproof footwear unless on a truly wet trail. Your feet will sweat in them especially in warmer climates. Wet or even simply damp feet are prone to blisters. I live in the Pacific Northwest of the USA, and I only use waterproof footwear in the winter.
    3) Take your shoes and socks off when you take a break to allow them to dry. This is one of the best strategies to avoid blisters in my opinion.
    4) Use better insoles to prevent your feet from moving within the shoes -- especially when going downhill. I always swap the insoles in my shoes for Superfeet BLUE insoles.
    5) Consider bringing different types of socks in your kit to change things up when you get hot spots. I use a combination of standard socks and Injinji toe socks on long distance hikes.
    6) Try using leukotape as soon as you develop hot spots. I've saved my feet from many a blister this way!

    • @AnneArchambault
      @AnneArchambault 3 роки тому +1

      One more!
      7) Wear dorky running gaiters to prevent dust and particles from entering your shoes and potentially causing blisters.

    Great video Chase. Here are 3 tips to prevent blisters from decades in the Infantry:
    1. Foot Powder- put powder on your feet after breakfast and after lunch on the trail.
    2. Place athletic tape on your heels to prevent blisters from forming.
    3. When you get new footwear, put on your hiking socks and footwear, tie the laces really tight, and take a hot shower in them. Wear them until they are dry and they will form to your feet.

      Maybe that works on military boots, but it's really not necessary in hiking boots bought to fit your feet.
      Also I want to add running around barefoot. When you run barefoot regularly, you don't have to worry about blisters on the bottom of your feet.

    • @borek772
      @borek772 3 роки тому +3

      Actually, those are now edging into "horrible boomer tips" category.
      Sure, they were the best life hacks you could pull off in the past.
      But mostly, because there was nothing better available back then.
      Foot powder does almost nothing - as soon as there is some moisture, it will clomp up.
      Athletic tape - yeah, I used* that one too, but you need right athletic tape (slick on the outside) and you need to be very careful with rounding out all of the edges with scissors - otherwise tape will unglue, clamp up and give you a blister of a century.
      Wearing wet footwear after hot shower - I can totally see this step being necessary with my dad's soviet-issued military boots, but it will most likely will give you blisters in the process and is deff not necessary on modern hiking shoes.
      Nowdays, we don't have to rely on those half-solutions.
      1. Dual-layer, quick drying & water wicking socks solve most of your moisture & blister issues.
      2. Light trail runners / approach shoes are way lighter, leagues away more comfortable and generally require no or minimal breaking-in.
      3. There is so much choice footwear nowdays, you can actually choose shoes that fit your feet perfectly from day zero.
      If you you cover points above, tape and powder & hot showers is not only unnecessary - it will actively make things worse for the wearer.
      *my feet sweat like crazy and I'm ridiculously blister-prone (record was 30 minutes of walking in flat terrain in low cut shoes). Switching to duallayer socks and very well ventilated running shoes fixed my issues completely, even in peak summer heat.

I am also bone on bone in my ankles (from previous sport injuries) I can go over on my ankle on flat ground. A couple of points, polygiene silver ion treatment is the best know. Used and approved worldwide. 2. There are a couple of problems with anatomically cut socks. If you end up wearing the wrong one on the wrong foot you can have serious problems. Also if you have a wear spot on one foot your socks will wear out faster as you can’t rotate on to the other foot.

    Blisters are caused by skin rubbing and is best avoided with two pairs of socks so the two layers do the rubbing not your skin. I use a thin sock next to my skin or something like armaskin and a thicker outer one. Avoiding moisture is impossible in the mountains of New Zealand and in my boots, but that's another story, best to develop ways around coping with it. When running I use one of my fav socks and I use petroleum jelly liberally on every area which might blister then put the sock on and have the shoes firmly laced. Great to hear what you have to say on many subjects I do many of the exercises you have recommended, thank you.

Cotton socks. If you aren't aware of your feet while hiking, you got it right. If they are impinging on your consciousness, you have a problem. @@ChaseMountains Had a first day hike with them last Sunday on a rough trail in winter conditions, amazing socks! Very good balancing of humidity and temperature inside of the hiking boots, great fit due to the left & right thing. What I really like: not as thick as other merino based socks, so there is a good agility for toes and forefoot. Will test them on more and longer hikes and maybe trailruns, but so far a great product in my opinion.

      If anyone views this and it helps them make their mind up on whether to purchase, well I’m glad as I won’t go near them after my experience…
      **** Edit: So I have contacted Silverlight directly in regards to my points below. Desiree from Silverlight gave me the “escalated to our manager” reply. And unfortunately it’s been 3 weeks and I’m yet to hear back from the manager.
      I also contacted Desiree 10 days ago, but I’m yet to hear a response.
      **** Please read if you are a potential buyer of this product.
      Note: I have not purchased this product “yet” and I actually do believe the product is most likely a great buy, however I’d like to point out a couple of misleading claims that this company makes prior to purchase:
      1. The “spin the wheel game” to get a discount and to give them your email. Trust me, you can play this game with multiple email address as many times as you want…and the result will be…you have won a 10% discount using code SILVERLIGHT10. If you look at the wheel you’ll see there’s a maximum discount of 30%. I have contacted them about this “spin the wheel game” and they are unable to tell me how many people have “won” the 30% discount. However in the process of finding this out, I was offered first a 15% discount, and then later a maximum 20% discount. When asked why 20% was their maximum, when they offer 30% on their spin the wheel game…well I haven’t heard back as yet.
      2. If you play the spin the wheel you will receive a number of emails, which is to be expected. However after some time you will receive an email stating something like..”There’s only 2 days left to claim your unique code on the Silverlight hiking socks….”. That code being SILVERLIGHT10. So I contacted them in regards to watching a UA-cam video and not being able to see the discount code after clicking on that UA-camrs link. Their response….no worries, please use SILVERLIGHT10 to get 10% off. I then asked if this discount has a time limit, and the response was no. So no, their is no “2 days left to claim your unique code”.
      Hey, brands are created and some take off and become very successful. Unfortunately many don’t.
      If you do a google search on this brand you won’t come up with much information. Now that’s not to say that the socks they produce aren’t amazing. But there seems to be some disconnect here…..
      If you have any additional information to ease my mind in actually purchasing from this company I would love to hear from you.

    My life changed when I finally learned to buy hiking shoes with wide toebox, more space for my toes than I thought I need and measured with two pairs of wool socks.
    It does not matter how hot it is, you want two pairs of wool socks on your feet when you are hiking, one of which is going to be your liner and the other will provide some additional padding.

    • @Torrque
      @Torrque Рік тому

      No, you don’t “want 2 pair of socks on your feet.”
      Unnecessary for most… however, that it works for you is super! 👍🏼
      Now, if we’re talking winter treks, that could be another story but if it’s hot, 2 pair is sooooo overkill… and foolish. A proper shoe for a individual’s foot and a proper sock, MAYBE a super thin liner for some, will be more than adequate.
      Your solution works for you but overkill for “everybody” is just dumb.

  • @anatexis_the_first
    @anatexis_the_first 3 роки тому +2

    I like the new intro!
    These socks really sound great. I only worry a bit about the thickness. Normally, I use really thick socks made out of 95% merino wool. I don't have problems with blisters, but since my feet are always a bit too wide for my boots, I've got some pressure spots. That's why I use really thick socks, and the silverlight ones might just be to thin.. but I guess I'll just have to try them out. Socks that can be worn for well over a week without a wash seem too good not to have :D

    Hi Chase, great review again. Short update for those hesitating buying Merino Wool socks for ethic & animal welfare motives: Originally these socks were made out of Australian Merino Wool without a Responsible (and ethic) Wool Standard Label. However recently Silverlight switched to a higher quality New Zealand Merino Wool, in NZL muIesing is banned and is generally known for better living conditions. I had contact with Silverlight and got this confirmed.

    Interesting review. Wonder why they went for silver, based on the fact that it is an expensive metal. Copper does the same for less price, hence the historical use of brass door knobs, copper pennies in drinking vessels, copper pans etc. Modulus of Elasticity is also approx. 25% higher for copper compared to silver so mechanical properties are better too. Silver is slightly more thermo-conductive than copper but at about 3% there's not much in it to warrant price. Perhaps it's a marketing thing, silver is sexier than copper.. and allows them to charge more.
