- A nostalgic look at the most incredible day of the 1987-1998 Italian Serie A championship when Ruud Gullit outperformed D10S and closed the gap down on Serie A champions Napoli to just 2 points.
Going into this game Napoli had lost just twice in all competitions and with only 5 games to go to the end of the championships, and 4 points clear (at a time when a win only got you 2 points), Maradona and Napoli were the clear favourites to win the scudetto once again.
By the end of this thrilling match however, the psychological advantage was with Gullit, Van Basten, Baresi, Maldini and co. Napoli ended up winning just once more all season to finish 3 points behind Arrigo Sacchi's Milan (which would go on to become arguably the greatest club side ever). When you watch the aggressive offside line employed by AC Milan, and the collective high tempo pressing on the ball possessor, it becomes evident quite quickly that modern great coaches of the likes of Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp owe a significant debt of gratitude to this incredible AC Milan team. And it is a testament of Maradona's unparalleled genius that in an era in which practically all of the world's greatest players played in Serie A, that whilst perhaps the only genuine world class player at Napoli, and with very limited funds at their disposal (i.e. in contrast to AC MILAN who went out and bought Van Basten/Rijkaard/Gullit, whilst Inter Milan bought Brehme/Mathaus/Klinsmann), you could still ONLY be Serie A champions by being better than Napoli (who would end up runners up in 87/88, 88/89 and then champions again in 89/90). This fact alone is what elevates D10S apart from Messi, CR7 and co.
The best season they played against each other. This is also the greatest match of their competition, between two of greatest number 10s in football history. And of course it becames the only show of Ruud Gullit and Diego Maradona. The game that included 4 in top 100 greatest list in history and they are almost at their peak: Maradona (90% formed if we compare with himself in 1986), Gullit (92%, 1987), Van Basten and Baresi (99%).
@@N17-o2r Maldini was so young on that time, man.
@@N17-o2r top 100 greatest is about achievement at player'peak in his career! at the moment Maradona and Gullit ruled the world, the young Paolo Maldini had no door. Maldini had reached the best of him in 1994.
In 1988, Gullit was still the King. Van Basten just won Ballon D'or based on the lucky volley in Euro 1988 final match, against Soviet Union. Throughout that tournament, all opponents paid their attention to Ruud and Marco of course took advantages. Totally, considering all the season at club and national team, Gullit deserved to win it.
There is a strong argument to be made that Gullit is the most complete player ever. Right through his career, Gullit played as centreback, sweeper, defensive mid, as a number 10, as a winger (both on right and left!) and as centre forward AND was world class in each of these roles. He does not get the plaudits he deserves...and yes he had a better 1988 than Van Basten and deserved the ballon d'or (as much as it is a non-sense of an award (and in my opinion actually worthless). Only Maradona was better than Gullit that year.
@@e-mot10nshd43 I think Gullit was better than Diego in 1988. Remember the way he leads Milan defeats Napoli 3-2 in the most important match to win Scudetto. The top performance ever in Serie A.
van basten needed a playmaker, with man to man marking. Gullit versus van basten was non sense they played for each other.
@@tlawengmophosho4848 all world fans know it.
9:16 Diego ! Diego ! Diego ! Diego ! Goooooooooooooooooooal !!!!
you do not see the skill level today, there are no number 10 today, to open up defences, the defences were mean back then.
