This is very interesting to see. As some catholics have criticized the pope for leaning more progressively, changing the Catholic religion. It's definitely come with some backlash. Will the catholics accept this new change or will they disapprove and despise the popes recent actions? I mean, Orthodoxy is like Catholicism, except it added no doctrines other than those put in place by Jesus and the Apostoles, while the Catholics added new ones based off of their understanding of the bible, while the Orthodox decided not to change anything. If you however subscribe to these Catholic doctrines, you have the option of Byzantine catholicism, where you agree with the Catholic Church on these added doctrines and some things, while disagreeing on others (like Prugatory being a place other than Heaven or Hell, or, most importantly, the Pope)

I see a lot of folks have never actually studied their bible. I want to break down the most quoted verse, Lev. 18:22, below. The actual Hebrew translation is really interesting and if you are serious about your faith, dissect and study your book. The word “abomination” is found, of course, in the King James translation of Leviticus 18:22, a translation which reads, “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.” Yet this is a thoroughly misleading rendition of the word toevah, which, while we may not know exactly what it means, definitely does not mean “abomination.” The term toevah (and its plural, toevot) occurs 103 times in the Hebrew Bible, and almost always has the connotation of a non-Israelite cultic practice. In the Torah, the primary toevah is avodah zara, foreign forms of worship, and most other toevot flow from it. The Israelites are instructed not to commit toevah because other nations do so. Deuteronomy 18:9-12 makes this quite clear: When you come into the land that YHVH your God gives you, do not learn to do the toevot of those nations. Do not find among you one who passes his son or daughter through the fire; or a magician; or a fortune teller, charmer, or witch… because all who do these things are toevah to YHVH and because of these toevot YHVH your God is driving them out before you. Elsewhere, Deuteronomy 7:25-26 commands: You shall burn the statues of their gods in fire. So, toevah is serious, but it is serious as a particular class of cultic offense: a transgression of national boundary. It is certainly not “abomination.” Toevah is used four times in Leviticus 18-once to refer to male homosexual acts, and then three times as an umbrella term. As in Deuteronomy, the signal feature of toevot is that the other nations of the Land of Israel do them: “You shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments, and shall not commit these toevot… because the people who were in the land before you did these toevot and made the land impure (tameh)” (Lev. 18:26-27; see also Lev. 18:29). The term is repeated with reference to homosexual activity in Lev. 20:13. In all these cases, toevah refers to a foreign cultic behavior wrongly practiced by Israelites and Israelite kings. And likewise, the prophet Ezekiel uses the term toevah a record-setting 39 times to refer to idolatry (Ez. 5:11, 6:9, 6:11, 7:20, 14:6, 20:7-8, 22:2, 44:6-7, 44:13), usury (Ez. 18:13), haughtiness and pride (Ez. 16:47-50; the “Sin of Sodom”-more on that in a future article), heterosexual adultery (Ez. 22:11, 33:26), and violence (Ez. 33:26), as well as a general term for foreign acts (Ez. 16:51) or transgression, often in a cultic context (Ez. 5:9, 7:3-4, 7:8-9, 9:4, 11:18, 11:21, 12:16, 16:2, 16:43, 18:24, 20:4, 33:29, 36:31). In one extended passage (Ez. 8:1-18), Ezekiel is taken on a visionary tour of toevot, all of which have to do with idolatry and each, Ezekiel says, is worse than the previous one, beginning with an image on the door of the gate of Jerusalem, to idols and imagery in a house of worship, to women weeping for the god Tammuz,* to men worshipping the sun within the Temple itself. This extended passage, with six mentions of toevah, links the term in every instance with avodah zara, or idolatry. In five instances, Ezekiel mentions toevah together with both idolatry and zimah or znut, “whoredom” (Ez. 16:22, 16:36, 16:58, 23:26, 43:8), strongly suggesting that the nature of sexual toevah is not mere lewdness, and certainly not loving intimate expression, but sexuality in a cultic context. It is unclear whether a toevah is detestable because it is foreign, or foreign because it is detestable. This question is resolved elsewhere in the Bible, because Israelites are not the only ones with toevot. There are several examples of things which are toevah for Egyptians but perfectly acceptable for Israelites. Genesis 43:32 states that eating with Israelites is toevah for Egyptians. Gen. 43:34 states that shepherds are toevah to Egyptians-the sons of Israel are themselves shepherds. In Exodus 8:22, Moses describes Israelite sacrifices as being toevat mitzrayim (toevah of Egypt), although obviously Israelite ritual is not an objective “abomination.” If toevah means abomination, then eating with shepherds, eating with Israelites, and Israelite sacrifices themselves must be abominable! Since this clearly is not the case, toevah cannot mean “abomination” in any ontological sense-it must be a relative quality. Toevah can also mean other things. It can refer to ritual imperfection: Deut. 17:1 uses it to refer to the sacrifice of a blemished animal, and Deut. 19:19 bans as toevah sacrifices bought through prostitution or “the price of a dog.” Deut. 22:5 calls crossdressing a toevah (incidentally, in Orthodox Jewish law, this includes women wearing pants). Remarriage (i.e. of the same two parties) is toevah according to Deut. 24:4. The sole ethical use of the term in the Torah is in Deut. 25:16, in which the use of unequal weights and measures is called toevah. So, in conclusion, when you take into consideration the word is used for various things that would not be considered a grave sin, "abomination" is not an accurate translation and within context you can see would not even explain if homosexuality is a sin at all. To any Christian reading, I suggest to just stick to Jesus' teachings over everything else. Let love guide your actions and be a good representation of what Jesus would do. May your God treat you as you have treated others and stay safe!
Very interesting post. Not entirely sure what to make of the whole issue myself, though I'm reminded of David Bentley Hart's (very literal) translation of the New Testament, where he makes the case that when Paul speaks of homosexuality, he's referring to catamites - that is, the practice of sexually using young male slaves. Ancient Greek/Hebrew people's understanding of sexuality is rather different to ours. Just spitballing, but it kind of seems that in an ideal world, the only purpose of sex would be to have children (hence no contraception, but then using "natural planning" feels like getting out on a technicality, and then there'd also be no reason for infertile people or older couples to have sex at all). Same as in an ideal world there'd be no divorce, but that's not really the reality we live in and sometimes it's necessary. It feels to me that Christianity has always had a bit of an uneasy relationship with sexuality. Almost feels like the two things are mutually exclusive - but that may be some "gnostic"/Manichean influence. With regards to the words of Christ, it feels hard to draw any conclusions - two stories jump to my mind immediately. One is the woman taken in adultery - his forgiving of her would have been radical at the time, though it also come with the command to "go and sin no more". The second is the woman at the well in John's gospel, who had previously had five husbands and was at the time with a man whom she wasn't married to. I didn't see any explicit condemnation of her in the account. Of course that doesn't mean approval, and it doesn't mean it was a good thing, but maybe it's at least a template for how the rest of us should act. Then the other issue is the slippery slope. First you let homosexuals marry, then how long before you get non-binary priests and all the political stuff that comes with that? Being gay is one thing, being part of Pride(TM) is another. How long before the church gets subverted for political purposes and changed beyond recognition?

That's good. Keep that attitude with anything you research and please continue to actually weigh the possibilities in your mind. Personally, I believe all expressions of sex are warranted and good simply based on the fact they are an ecstatic expression of communion with another and joy. That needs no serious reason to be felt. It simply needs to be felt and enjoyed by life. In this way, to me, it is holy and worthy of reverence.

While the core biological function of sex is furthering the species, it's not the sole function (and the psychological bonding function could arguably be just as important). I've encountered the idea that in some real sense, the union of two people is a diminished, shadowy mirror of the ultimate union between man and God. Christ is the bridegroom who wants to "marry" your soul (couple this with the wedding feast imagery in the Bible). Another core question is the nature of sin. Speaking broadly, the west tends to view sin as "breaking God's rule book", whereas the east sees sin more as a disease in need of cure. God hates sin because it leads to human suffering and self-destruction. Instead of choosing the ultimate good - communion with God - we choose perishable, finite goods that can't possibly fulfil our natures. Not sure how this relates to the problem of sexuality, but it's kind of connected.
@Skin_Man That's an interesting take. Personally, I'm not Christian. I was raised Christian, but ultimately decided it made no sense to me as a truth. So I agree with the broader concept of what you're saying, the specifics I just don't consider relevant. Like the emphasis on the Christian God and Jesus. At least you're giving food for thought, though. Most the people I encounter read a modern interpretation of the Bible and tell me to be quiet because I couldn't possibly know more than the people that wrote it. Which I find odd because then that just....supports the argument that the verse they are quoting could NOT mean what they think it means??? You would think they would then agree with me questioning it and breaking down the etymology of its origins as far as source language goes. @@cody42693 Fair enough. Honestly my understanding of Christianity is quite different from the usual American Evengalicalism that you usually encounter online. I was agnostic myself for many years, but I came to Christianity through a combination of existentialism (Paul Tillich in particular) and Eastern Orthodox thinkers like Jonathan Pageau from the Symbolic World or David Bentley Hart. His book "The Experience of God" is one of my all-time favorites. Christianity resonates with me primarily because of Christ. No longer is God a distant reality, seated in a heavenly Empyrean across a vast metaphysical chasm that none can hope to cross, but God enters into the human existential predicament, takes the sin and evil of the world onto his shoulders, even unto a terrible death, and effects a divine rescue mission. He overcomes our fallen/dysfunctional state and opens the path to unify humanity and divinity, whereby humans can enter into the divine life. God is far more akin to the Hindu Atman or the Tao, rather than the simplistic notion of an invisible man in the sky. I have read the Bhagavad Gita and other Eastern texts, as well as Stoicism, and they do resonate with me on some level, but the Christian story strikes me as the most compelling picture of reality. It does help that I believe in apokatastasis, which is to say the eventual salvation of all. That's another point where interpretation is everything when it comes to the Bible. To give one example, the word "eternal" is a translation of the Greek word Aionios, which is a far more subtle and complicated concept than most like to accept.

I see a lot of folks have never actually studied their bible. I want to break down the most quoted verse, Lev. 18:22, below. The actual Hebrew translation is really interesting and if you are serious about your faith, dissect and study your book.
The word “abomination” is found, of course, in the King James translation of Leviticus 18:22, a translation which reads, “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.” Yet this is a thoroughly misleading rendition of the word toevah, which, while we may not know exactly what it means, definitely does not mean “abomination.”
The term toevah (and its plural, toevot) occurs 103 times in the Hebrew Bible, and almost always has the connotation of a non-Israelite cultic practice. In the Torah, the primary toevah is avodah zara, foreign forms of worship, and most other toevot flow from it. The Israelites are instructed not to commit toevah because other nations do so. Deuteronomy 18:9-12 makes this quite clear:
When you come into the land that YHVH your God gives you, do not learn to do the toevot of those nations. Do not find among you one who passes his son or daughter through the fire; or a magician; or a fortune teller, charmer, or witch… because all who do these things are toevah to YHVH and because of these toevot YHVH your God is driving them out before you.
Elsewhere, Deuteronomy 7:25-26 commands:
You shall burn the statues of their gods in fire. Do not desire the silver and gold on them and take it onto yourself, else you be snared by it, for it is a toevah to YHVH your God. And you shall not bring toevah to your home.
Deut. 12:31, 13:14, 17:4, 27:15, and 32:16 further identify idolatry, child sacrifice, witchcraft, and other “foreign” practices as toevah, and Deut. 20:18 says that avoiding toevah justifies the genocide of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanaites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. So, toevah is serious, but it is serious as a particular class of cultic offense: a transgression of national boundary. It is certainly not “abomination.”
Toevah is used four times in Leviticus 18-once to refer to male homosexual acts, and then three times as an umbrella term. As in Deuteronomy, the signal feature of toevot is that the other nations of the Land of Israel do them: “You shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments, and shall not commit these toevot… because the people who were in the land before you did these toevot and made the land impure (tameh)” (Lev. 18:26-27; see also Lev. 18:29). The term is repeated with reference to homosexual activity in Lev. 20:13.
In all these cases, toevah refers to a foreign cultic behavior wrongly practiced by Israelites and Israelite kings.
And likewise, the prophet Ezekiel uses the term toevah a record-setting 39 times to refer to idolatry (Ez. 5:11, 6:9, 6:11, 7:20, 14:6, 20:7-8, 22:2, 44:6-7, 44:13), usury (Ez. 18:13), haughtiness and pride (Ez. 16:47-50; the “Sin of Sodom”-more on that in a future article), heterosexual adultery (Ez. 22:11, 33:26), and violence (Ez. 33:26), as well as a general term for foreign acts (Ez. 16:51) or transgression, often in a cultic context (Ez. 5:9, 7:3-4, 7:8-9, 9:4, 11:18, 11:21, 12:16, 16:2, 16:43, 18:24, 20:4, 33:29, 36:31).
In one extended passage (Ez. 8:1-18), Ezekiel is taken on a visionary tour of toevot, all of which have to do with idolatry and each, Ezekiel says, is worse than the previous one, beginning with an image on the door of the gate of Jerusalem, to idols and imagery in a house of worship, to women weeping for the god Tammuz,* to men worshipping the sun within the Temple itself. This extended passage, with six mentions of toevah, links the term in every instance with avodah zara, or idolatry.
In five instances, Ezekiel mentions toevah together with both idolatry and zimah or znut, “whoredom” (Ez. 16:22, 16:36, 16:58, 23:26, 43:8), strongly suggesting that the nature of sexual toevah is not mere lewdness, and certainly not loving intimate expression, but sexuality in a cultic context.
It is unclear whether a toevah is detestable because it is foreign, or foreign because it is detestable. This question is resolved elsewhere in the Bible, because Israelites are not the only ones with toevot. There are several examples of things which are toevah for Egyptians but perfectly acceptable for Israelites.
Genesis 43:32 states that eating with Israelites is toevah for Egyptians. Gen. 43:34 states that shepherds are toevah to Egyptians-the sons of Israel are themselves shepherds. In Exodus 8:22, Moses describes Israelite sacrifices as being toevat mitzrayim (toevah of Egypt), although obviously Israelite ritual is not an objective “abomination.” If toevah means abomination, then eating with shepherds, eating with Israelites, and Israelite sacrifices themselves must be abominable! Since this clearly is not the case, toevah cannot mean “abomination” in any ontological sense-it must be a relative quality.
Toevah can also mean other things. It can refer to ritual imperfection: Deut. 17:1 uses it to refer to the sacrifice of a blemished animal, and Deut. 19:19 bans as toevah sacrifices bought through prostitution or “the price of a dog.” Deut. 22:5 calls crossdressing a toevah (incidentally, in Orthodox Jewish law, this includes women wearing pants). Remarriage (i.e. of the same two parties) is toevah according to Deut. 24:4. The sole ethical use of the term in the Torah is in Deut. 25:16, in which the use of unequal weights and measures is called toevah.
So, in conclusion, when you take into consideration the word is used for various things that would not be considered a grave sin, "abomination" is not an accurate translation and within context you can see would not even explain if homosexuality is a sin at all.
To any Christian reading, I suggest to just stick to Jesus' teachings over everything else. Let love guide your actions and be a good representation of what Jesus would do.

Very interesting post. Not entirely sure what to make of the whole issue myself, though I'm reminded of David Bentley Hart's (very literal) translation of the New Testament, where he makes the case that when Paul speaks of homosexuality, he's referring to catamites - that is, the practice of sexually using young male slaves. Ancient Greek/Hebrew people's understanding of sexuality is rather different to ours.
Just spitballing, but it kind of seems that in an ideal world, the only purpose of sex would be to have children (hence no contraception, but then using "natural planning" feels like getting out on a technicality, and then there'd also be no reason for infertile people or older couples to have sex at all). Same as in an ideal world there'd be no divorce, but that's not really the reality we live in and sometimes it's necessary. It feels to me that Christianity has always had a bit of an uneasy relationship with sexuality. Almost feels like the two things are mutually exclusive - but that may be some "gnostic"/Manichean influence.
With regards to the words of Christ, it feels hard to draw any conclusions - two stories jump to my mind immediately. One is the woman taken in adultery - his forgiving of her would have been radical at the time, though it also come with the command to "go and sin no more". The second is the woman at the well in John's gospel, who had previously had five husbands and was at the time with a man whom she wasn't married to. I didn't see any explicit condemnation of her in the account. Of course that doesn't mean approval, and it doesn't mean it was a good thing, but maybe it's at least a template for how the rest of us should act.
Then the other issue is the slippery slope. First you let homosexuals marry, then how long before you get non-binary priests and all the political stuff that comes with that? Being gay is one thing, being part of Pride(TM) is another. How long before the church gets subverted for political purposes and changed beyond recognition?

That's good. Keep that attitude with anything you research and please continue to actually weigh the possibilities in your mind.
Personally, I believe all expressions of sex are warranted and good simply based on the fact they are an ecstatic expression of communion with another and joy. That needs no serious reason to be felt. It simply needs to be felt and enjoyed by life.
In this way, to me, it is holy and worthy of reverence.
@@cody42693 Yeah, it's something I've been puzzling over for a while. While the core biological function of sex is furthering the species, it's not the sole function (and the psychological bonding function could arguably be just as important). I've encountered the idea that in some real sense, the union of two people is a diminished, shadowy mirror of the ultimate union between man and God. Christ is the bridegroom who wants to "marry" your soul (couple this with the wedding feast imagery in the Bible).
Another core question is the nature of sin. Speaking broadly, the west tends to view sin as "breaking God's rule book", whereas the east sees sin more as a disease in need of cure. God hates sin because it leads to human suffering and self-destruction. Instead of choosing the ultimate good - communion with God - we choose perishable, finite goods that can't possibly fulfil our natures. Not sure how this relates to the problem of sexuality, but it's kind of connected.
@Skin_Man That's an interesting take. Personally, I'm not Christian. I was raised Christian, but ultimately decided it made no sense to me as a truth. So I agree with the broader concept of what you're saying, the specifics I just don't consider relevant. Like the emphasis on the Christian God and Jesus.

@@cody42693 Fair enough. Honestly my understanding of Christianity is quite different from the usual American Evengalicalism that you usually encounter online. I was agnostic myself for many years, but I came to Christianity through a combination of existentialism (Paul Tillich in particular) and Eastern Orthodox thinkers like Jonathan Pageau from the Symbolic World or David Bentley Hart. His book "The Experience of God" is one of my all-time favorites.
Christianity resonates with me primarily because of Christ. No longer is God a distant reality, seated in a heavenly Empyrean across a vast metaphysical chasm that none can hope to cross, but God enters into the human existential predicament, takes the sin and evil of the world onto his shoulders, even unto a terrible death, and effects a divine rescue mission. He overcomes our fallen/dysfunctional state and opens the path to unify humanity and divinity, whereby humans can enter into the divine life. God is far more akin to the Hindu Atman or the Tao, rather than the simplistic notion of an invisible man in the sky.
I have read the Bhagavad Gita and other Eastern texts, as well as Stoicism, and they do resonate with me on some level, but the Christian story strikes me as the most compelling picture of reality. It does help that I believe in apokatastasis, which is to say the eventual salvation of all. That's another point where interpretation is everything when it comes to the Bible. To give one example, the word "eternal" is a translation of the Greek word Aionios, which is a far more subtle and complicated concept than most like to accept.

When I was very young, I attended a Catholic school. Since I've liked dinosaurs and mentioned it to my teacher, (also the principal), she sent me to the head priest. There he told me, "no dinosaurs, they were put the by the scientist". Then I've heard of gay people...the priest said, " it's against god, and it the devils work".
Now, why the CHANGE. Is it a double standard? So in a few years, the church will say it's okay to marry aminals?

Sex couple blessing ! He has approved of a blessing for an individual who may be gay. The church will NEVER approve a gay union.

@@deborahwhit118 yes we will all face God, but how would you prefer to do it? Wouldn't you think that it is far better to admit that we have all sinned and then repent of our sins in Jesus name. Read the holy scriptures as to what God calls sin and turn from sin, or do you think that it would be wise to show support for what God calls an abomination. We are not anyone else's judge, but we should not support sin on any level, we should run away from it and certainly the Pope should know that! For him to give the priest permission to bless the same sex union , is no different than telling them that God approves. We know that clearly in the old and knew testament, God still calls it an abomination. It is sin and no priest or Pope should be letting people think otherwise!! Like I said he will stand before God, he's supposed to lead people to the narrow path , not to the eternal lake that burns forever and ever without ceasing. Very sad that a lot of the clergy today would rather be ear ticklers instead of teaching from the holy Bible. It takes a blasphemous fool to think that they can change God's will....
