The real reason why the MV wasnt released was because Lay just simply didnt like the MV. So he decided to just release a visualiser and dance practice L M A O + the choreo is mostly combination of Chinese classical dance and hip-hop

What i like n respect about him is he tries to bring new style of dance or choreo everytime with unique ingredients... I mean most idols who r good in dance generally do the same kind of choreos that has clicked or is easily popular but he never is afraid of experimenting n exploring new things.. its like we get to learn new things with him as well. And he is trying hard to establish a trademark style of his own instead of following the already tried n tasted path which the audience is comfortable with

As you know, Lay is an ambassador for China so one of his goals is to share Chinese culture with the world. One way he is doing this is by creating his own style of music which he has labeled M-pop. M-Pop stands for Mixed-pop, which means he mixes traditional Chinese elements and sounds with mainstream pop and hip-hop beats and styles -- combining old school Chinese culture with new modern hip-hop and contemporary beats and styles.
Lay is a singer, rapper, songwriter, composer, producer actor, director, editor, dancer, designer, etc. -- genius -- and with every new release of his, he just one ups himself. When it comes to Lay's solo work he does it all -- he writes, composes and produces the songs (including the rap sections), he even creates all his own beats, he has a large part in creating the choreography and he has a hand in coming up with and directing the MVs. It is also all financed by him. As you may know, he even owns his own production company called Zhangyixing Studios, which is named after Lay.
The choreography for "Flying Apsaras" has also been designed to highlight Chinese culture by using a lot of traditionally Chinese dance moves and styles. And the choreographer that Lay worked with was a member of his team from the dance competition show that Lay was a team captain on called Street Dance of China season 4.
As you might know, Lay is the Chinese member of EXO and he was originally meant to fill the same role in EXO-M -- the Mandarin Chinese sub-unit of EXO -- that Kai fills in EXO-K -- the Korean sub-unit of EXO. Kai is one of the top two BEST dancers in Korea (Taemin from SHINee being the other top dancer) and Lay is one of the top dancers in China.
Lay's catchphrase is "Balance" which means that when it comes to choreography and synchronization it has to have balance. If it's not balanced then it's not good. So his attention to detail when he creates music and choreography is on point. Like all of SM's top dancers, Lay is super dedicated when it comes to dance and music.
Within the Chinese music industry and dance community, Lay is regarded as an industry expert that pretty much all other dancers and musicians look up to. He has even started his own Idol trainee company in China -- with SM's blessing -- called Chromasome where he plans to use his talents to influence the world entertainment industry and to pass his skills and knowledge on to the next generation, etc.
When Lay puts his mind to something he goes all in and immerses himself in it with a goal of becoming the best at it. That is why he is regarded as an expert at so many different things, because he becomes so involved and studies and practices so much that he eventually overtakes his teachers.
Lay is a perfectionist and he is never satisfied unless everything is as close to perfect as possible, which is why we don't have an MV for "Flying Apsaras" yet. He wasn't happy with the final product. His new album -- which is the album "Flying Apsaras" is on -- is called East. This is also why Lay is involved in all aspects of his music. He takes pride in the fact that all parts of his work is done by him, so he wants it to be perfect because it's his reputation that's on the line if things aren't up to his standard.
Fun fact: I believe the dragon you see the visualizer is connected to the dragon we see in Lay's previous MV, "Lit."

This style of DunHuang dance was from the Sui & mainly Tang Dynasties of China. Dance & art at the time had heavy Buddhist influences. Lay filmed his MV at the DunHuang Caves where there's ancient paintings of Divine Fairies (Dancing Apsaras).
HuangXiao (Ziv), a Classical Chinese dancer from SDC3/4, choreographed this MV for Lay.

The Flying Apsaras, or Feitian in Mandarin, are often considered a symbol of the Mogao Grottoes. They refer to a spiritual being in Hindu and Buddhist culture with an image of a beautiful female. (source: google) You can see this in the MV too. Apart from his reference to Monkey King in the MV which also explains one of his other track titled Samadhi Real Fire (三昧眞火).
Also, there's a dance of the same name that started in the 1930s that is why you see this seemingly contemporary folk dance paired with the modern wacking dance.
The EP called East is still align with Lay's advocacy to bring Chinese music to the world. Hope you can check the other 4 tracks in the song. He has several live performances for Ascetic Monk and Flying Apsaras which you can watch in his channel.

Lay’s born and grew up in China and the dance was actually inspired by Chinese Dunhuang murals called the Flying Apsara. Dunhuang was major city on the ancient Silk Road and some of the paintings and caves are related to Buddhist stories so maybe that’s why it looks similar to Indian dance

For us Chinese people the lotus flower symbolize a lot both culturally and religiously, so I think many of the formation in the dance refers to the lotus shape for that reason. I'm Chinese growing up in Canada but I'm really into what my culture offers to me so I'm pretty sure this is about 敦煌DunHuang(I believe that's where he was in the mv, the part where it shows a big mural and statue of Buddha),which is a city in China that holds a lot of historical monuments. One of the most famous one is the Mogao cave (or the thousand Buddha grottoes, is a form of 500-700 small Buddhists cave dug out of the mountain which housed more than 2000 Buddha sculptures) and it's DunHuang frescoes or DunHuang murals, it resembles a series of murals about Buddhism, history and stories that stretches over 50,000 square meters of wall area。 From it one of the most commonly seen mural art is about the flying apsaras, there are more than 4500 flying apasaras painted within the mogao caves。The flying apasaras are incarnations of heavenly gods in Buddhism, and their role is to play music and dance for Buddha. you can look it up some pictures if you are interested, you might spot some apasaras holding a similar position as what Lay did here. Also some of the murals were over 1600 years old! I hope that's some useful information for those who wonder what this song is about! (*^▽^*)

I read that he wasn't happy with the MV he produced so he choose not to release it. He is a perfectionist. If you ever watch him judge dance/singing shows, he is very critical, but still trying to help the person/group. I would think all of this dance is Chinese referenced and from way back in time. The movements certainly have to be his inspiration. I absolutely love Lay and miss him in EXO. I think he is just amazing!!! ❤❤❤

About the influence, it’s probably influenced by the flying apsaras like the title implies. You can search on UA-cam, there’s quite a lot of Chinese dances inspired by the flying apsaras(aka. Feitian) like depicted in the dunhuang caves we see in the visualizer.
