  • WTF DOES “OG KPOP STAN" EVEN MEAN?!⬇️
    Supposedly "original gangster”, can be seen as “old generation", personally viewed as “old-school”.🤓 I’ve been into Korean music since 1998 when I was 15, and using “kpop stan” is more catchy (super cringe or not) than “person who’s listened to Korean music since 1998”, amirite or AMIRITE.😂

    XTRA 411-
    I became an avid Korean music aka Kpop listener/lover since 1998. Korean and rap music were my coping mechanisms from the bullying I experienced in middle school through high school and my love for the genre has stuck by me ever since. The genre, along with artists like Michael Jackson, Aaliyah, Britney Spears, etc. then motivated me into becoming a hip-hop/pop dancer, which was a very active lifestyle for me literally throughout my whole 20s. (XTRA DANCE 411- I danced for, trained, and performed with 4 different dance teams. My first and main dance team who started my "dance life" was with Marvelous Motion (who later became IaMmE, America's Best Dance Crew Season 6 Champions). A lot of my dance training came from Di "Moon" Zhang, Brandon "747" Harrell, Emilio Dosal, SOREAL, and from attending many dance classes in Houston and L.A. (from amazing local talent to widely-known talents such as Parris Goebel, Keone Madrid, Kyle Hanagami, Lando Wilkins, Mister Wiggles, Rino Nakasone)
    Unfortunately, I took a huge break from Korean music and dance around 2015 when I was officially diagnosed with lupus nephritis, seizures, and a heart murmur. I was receiving and battling years of chemotherapy and dialysis along with taking 32 pills a day, so I had no mental/emotional/spiritual room to keep myself updated with Kpop or dance. Luckily, I'm in remission now. That doesn't mean that lupus and seizures are gone because I am still very capable of frequent flare-ups if I don't take care of myself, but I make sure to do so enough to manage and live as "normally" as possible. I am also not capable of being an active dancer like I used to be due to my chronic illnesses, but I’m still a dancer in my mind, heart, and soul.
    ALSO! Just to be SUPER clear- me calling myself an "OG kpop stan" does NOT mean that anyone who's listened to kpop after me is inferior or less-than. A kpop lifestyle is a kpop lifestyle regardless of time. Please don’t get that sh*t twisted.😛 Sooo I am currently and actively keeping a weather eye on the KPOP horizon and also using what I’ve learned from my dance years to give credit where it’s due!
    💜

    Honestly if Kpop stans are not biased, Lay is definitely the best dancer in Kpop. His skills and versatility are miles better than any other Kpop idol out there. He's also the most developed idol artist and he touched everything in his music.

    As expected from SM, they just posted it in twitter and UA-cam, and that's it. But in China its different for sure, he had a live on his birthday for over an hour and more than 46 million people watched him.

There are weekly UA-cam episodes of the dance show he participates in "Street Dance of China" and the accounts NEVER post about it, apart from all the other shows he does that are officially available on UA-cam. all other members get at least one share about their programs, it's sad to see how SM distances fandom from the chinese member

    I'm so glad you checked this out. He incorporated so many different dance styles into this (he even did some waacking too!)
    Just for some context, he made this to refer to a cultural heritage (also an UNESCO site) in China - the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang(the place you saw in the visualizer). These caves were built with Buddhist temples with sculptures, paintings and architecture that started from AD 366 and more arts were kept building into it in all centuries that followed in the whole Chinese history, so it’s regarded as a gallery of the historical evolution of culture, garment and art in China.
    The Flying Apsaras is one of the key themes from the paintings preserved in these caves, and in China there is a specific dance genre called ´flying apsaras’ transforming the movements and body gestures from these paintings into the real dancing (a lot of the hands movements here dance is inspired by that, especially when he put one arm behind his head and join the other arm/head at the side-that was an iconic gesture from a flying apsaras painting when an apsara was playing a traditional Chinese instrument called Pipa but instead of holding the instrument at the front she was holding it behind her head).
    I'm so bummed with views it deserves so much more than this. Thank you for the reaction!

    I've been screaming at the top of my lungs for nine years that he's the best dancer in the industry. He's been a pro dancer for years. Imho, I think he's better than most pros. Of course everyone has their specialties that they're amazing at and may do better than Yixing; but as an overall dancer, no one has surpassed him in my eyes. Not only does he do choreo spectacularly, he's also a wonderful freestyler. The music runs through his veins.

    • @MyAngelsHalo
      @MyAngelsHalo 2 роки тому +18

      No idols talk about him or praise him cause he's Chinese. In his entire career, the only Kpop idols that have praised him have been NCT and Leo from VIXX. Also his EXO members, but, honestly, barely. Mostly Baekhyun. It's simply racism in my eyes. His own company didn't want him having the dance spotlight. His talent was in the shadows for the longest time. I'm just happy he's able to show his passion for dance the way he wants to now.

    The fact that Lay wasn't satisfied with the mv that's why it became a visualizer instead. Like it blows my mind how insanely amazing he is!

  • @aegeanboat
    @aegeanboat 2 роки тому +15

    Lay did spend a lot of money (heard that the budget is even higher than lit) on the mv. He flew 150 staff members and dancers to the desert and a well known world heritage site called Mogao Grottoes, also known as Caves of the Thousand Buddhas, to shoot the mv. The Flying Apsaras are often considered a symbol of the Mogao Grottoes, painted in Mogao caves 1600 years ago.
    In the dance practice, Lay incorporated many traditional dance moves and gestures painted on the caves. The reason for him to release only 40s is because, as he said, he’s not fully satisfied with the rest of the mv. I really hope he’ll drop the full version soon, but I respect his decision. As we all know, Lay never settles for less.

    You're right, this is a performance. This song is amply named since Apsaras, in Hindu and Buddhist mythology, are masters in celestial dancing, entertaining the gods and fallen heroes, and Lay and the backup dancers all did that in this dance practice, they danced for the gods and heroes (the audience), and props to the cameraperson for filming this so cinematically. Speaking of cinematically, the Visualizer looks like it could be a movie. Lay himself is one of many K-pop idols who is a sextuple threat for a reason.

    I wish people could have the insight to dive into more cultural music they may not be familiar with...I'm not Asian, but love Asian music since a kid. From Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Korean dramas, to Kabuki and Chinese Xiqu, the art of hand and head movements and gestures, and of course Tai Chi. Just because it's not trendy, commercial, or kpop-ish, it doesn't take away from the beauty of the music or dance in Asian inspired history and culture. Hinduism and Buddhism have significant meaning to hand gestures that are interesting to me, but not the general audience. Asian people and dancers can understand and appreciate it more, but I'm neither, just grew up with Asian channels and shows that were way more interesting than American tv. And in Hawaii, which is considered a "melting pot", we grew up with all aspects of Asian culture, food and music, it's part of Hawaii's history.
    But Lay incorporating traditional sounds mixed with modern beats is so enticing to me, it speaks to my soul and I appreciate it to the fullest. He brings balance within this dance and it is art in its purest form. Thanks Thina!💙🌺

Aside from dancing he directs, composes, writes, produces and basically does everything. Chanyeol was quoted to have said that out of all EXO members Lay is the most hardworking and that's saying a lot coz we all know how hard idols work. I heard he even sleeps less than 4 hrs a day. He is actually one of the few who likes to change continuosly or not afraid to challenge many dancing styles, specially from rough to soft, powerful to artistic, and he is pretty good in popping and locking as well, I also like how he is not afraid to be judged as he always starts learning something and dance so well with what he's learnt, for instance, like krumping, he's basically the king despite learning it for just 8 months, now he moves on to 太極 classic dance, which is so fresh and new to him, and he did really well, so I believe he could improve so much in the future just like he did with krumping. He is a choreography dancer for so many years (like Trix said on his social media page, and compliments him on how good he has improved in freestyling), and it's not just his skills, but how he looks when he dance which is just so artistic and charming. Instead of saying he is the best dancer, I would say Lay is one of the most talented dancers in the entertainment industry.

    Its not TaiJi.
    An immortal flying in the air. Flying statues are often found in Buddhist stone murals. A God flying in the air in Buddhist murals or stone carvings. God is called Deva in Sanskrit. Because Deva means "flying", it is translated into flying Apsaras in Chinese.

      Also there is a legend of Chang'e flying to the moon in China. Flying to the sky has always been a dream of the Chinese people

      Thanks for the info! However, I said I saw similar elements of tai chi, i didn’t state that it is. I appreciated the similarity in concept to highlight what I got from the translation of the song.

      @@ogkpopstan Yes, Thina is right. Many hand gestures in TaiChi has been shown in this dance, and TaiChi has to do with balancing your mind and body...and many Tai Chi movements and gestures in this dance is also seen in the dance. Tai Chi helps the heart and mind empower the Chi in your core throughout your body to bring power and balance to your body, from head to toes..every body's stance and movement is bringing your Chi to fruition, within your body, where peace and tranquility is achieved as you center and balance through the moves. Even at the end, when two hands are are staright hands in front , opposite from each other, represents balance, respect and completion. A very Buddist gesture as a means of respect to Buddah. So TaiChi, invented by a Buddhist monk, kept those learning it
      to get a sence of core stregnths as you move your Chi throuhout your body, to relax you, center you, calm you, give you energy and balance...and many gestures are TaiChi inspired, through interpretation you see it in this dance. Thanks Thina!💙🌺

      I think it's actually possible that there are taichi movements here since the main choreographer (Huang Xiao) have also started practicing taichi this year and incorporating it in his choreo (in sdc4).

    Awwww thank you so much for sharing your reaction! Your analysis did add perspective to this so great job✊
    And yesss Lay is an artist! He has his own vision and his execution is just amazing. I love the way that his arts also grow with him. Through years, he became more certain about what he wants to show the world and that's his own culture. I think that's really cool because not everyone is open to that but he preserves his original intention nonetheless.
    Hope more people can appreciate his arts and not be intimidated by the unsually concept that's out of general pop culture because this (and all of his works actually) deserves everything 😭❤️

    Lay and many of the chinese singers producers like for example lexi. They put in a lot of their own money into their videos. in the end if it dosent meet their standards they actually dont release it.. Seems to be the case for the full video of this one too. its quite a banger . But this album had soo many awesome songs... i hope they do atleast one as a video.

    Frikkin LOVE Lay and this choreography… however, I will say that I’ve notice his movements are pretty far off from the rest of the dance team when it comes to the hands and the smaller movements… no big tho cuz he’s his own person and he doesn’t need to match the rest of them😎

      I think he does it purposely, same as Lit, in Lit he is representing a king (I mean he is the king) so he also control others' movements (like orders type?) And shows that since he is the king he doesn't need to do it as "hard" as others, but anyways showing his power on his solo part. Everything is connected on Lay's works so I think that's the reason, also when you pause on that kind of parts you can see that everything is still symmetrical and fits since the rest are all doing the same and he is the only one doing the steps with a part changed
