I have been looking for this movie for the longest time. I had this movie on my mind for a min and after Louis Gosset Jr. passed I definitely had to watch this again. Been binge watching all Gosset Jr. Movies all day. R. I. P. Mr. Gosset. God bless. 😢. Thank you for providing this movie on UA-cam. 👍
They want to bury this movie because it shows a “Highly Intelligent and Competent “ Black man saving a White man who still (If you see the ending) doesn’t want to believe he’s that good.
The version ABCTV Australia broadcast in the 8.30 p.m. timeslot on the night of June 17 1994 sounded better with better music and no over-dubbing of the original voices.
I remember watching this movie around the time it came out. Riveting. The scene at the end is worth the price of admission alone. Louis and Martin were really great in this. RIP Louis.

A real good & disturbing movie I watched on HBO back in 1984. You can't find this movie anywhere else, it was on VHS. Worth watching with great Actors portraying in the film & made in New York & starting Actors. 7 of 1-10. It does happen even today. Good & BAD out there.
Another great one from the late, great Levinson-Link team, the writers of "Columbo"! Awesome! Thanks again Manfocused for another great film! I'm a woman, but I LOVE your Guy Flicks! 😁😀😄
I have Not seen this movie since the 80’s but I have been “looking” for it for several years. It made such a great impact on me because of Lou Gossett. Thanks so much “Manfocused” for posting this excellent movie. I just subscribed to your channel too. 👍💚😎⭐️🔥✌️
Video shop in U.K I worked at in mid 80s had this on VHS, I'd forgotten the sub-plot so a real treat to watch it again. The gang v Sheen scene, what a tension builder, the Gossett jr v gang scene, wo that got the juices flowing... fantastic film, thanks to the uploader
The 1980s were crazy and this film kind of touches on the crazy criminal side of it. HBO really made some great TV feature films back in the day! Watched this when I was a kid, thanks so much for uploading it!
This was shown on HBO in December, 1984, right at the time of the Bernhard Goetz Subway Vigilante shooting. I'm sure that was just a coincidence but because of Goetz, this was the perfect time to show this film.
For a older film, this ideology is as relevant today as it was back then. Very well put together, Martin Sheen and Gossett Jr. were excellent here, as well as the whole cast. I liked this movie very much and in the end we are left with our own thoughts of the truth. In today's world we have Trojans and Malware, Viruses we cannot see to add to the entry areas crime enters our homes...Best pray and be diligent with our defenses, sadly in every aspect of our lives.
I saw this movie when I was "10" it was burned into my memory, Gossett's character was a necessary evil if you want to call him that, he made the Tenants see through his eyes what "Security" means, overall this movie was excellent.
Thanks so much for adding-uploading this great movie!!! It just recently disappeared from UA-cam only a week or two ago, just before I finished watching it!! So Thank You Very Much Manfocused!!!
I had heard good things about this movie. Martin Sheen and Lou Gossett, Jr. Thanks for posting. Hard to watch scene near the end. And I see how it would stick with people. Spoiler: I like that it's a bit ambiguous. Maybe Louis did all those awful things, but maybe we're willing to live with it, if it keeps us safe.
Only dishonest thing John Mack did was telling everyone the tenant’s meeting was cancelled w/o telling Charlie Hyatt. But there was no evidence John orchestrated any crimes.
The security guard would have employees, wouldn’t he? He can’t guard any building 24/7 on his own, and he can’t guard more than one building on his own. EDIT. Also, you don’t give cows’ milk to cats. Cats are lactose intolerant. Also, when the guard is told about the r@pe he says “She’s going to be alright isnt she?” That dates it! Nowadays it is accepted that nobody is “alright” mentally afterwards and, indeed, it is too early to tell about physical harm because she could have been given a STI.
Geez! You’re reading way too much into this. John Mack’s first concern was that Fran (the victim) was not killed or had a life threatening injury. Later on, there’s a scene where he’s escorting Fran to her apt. from the laundry room, where she thanks him b/c she still feels traumatized & John tells her he’ll keep doing it for as long as need be. So there is awareness about the mental/emotional scars rape victims have.
No, they hired A guard, one and really more of an advisor. He stated early on he would only be there sometimes and really only for the first little while.. His main duty was make the building less vulnerable to entry from those that didn't belong there. Cats have been drinking cows milk for many hundreds if not many thousands of years. Obviously alright meant her physical state as in she was still alive. How could you have taken that any other way ?
I don't know? I think I now have more questions than answers. Good movie, it makes you stop to think. How much it too much. And I know, "It is easy to disregard sin, until it directly effects you." Also, If you make an example of one, others tend to shape up quickly. Kind of like the next to the last scene. Unfortunately in our society, we are in the 'wrong' when we take a stand against bad behavior. It has some levels to it that would make for a great discussion.
Wow> great story w/twists & human nature> the liberal got a personal dose of reality that changed his tune> well done, good acting, moved along cohesively & I sure enjoyed this movie> recommend
The point is that Martin Sheen now sees the point of Louis Gosset's approach to managing the crime. Now that it happened to HIM. This is a classic take on the Liberal vs. Conservative stance on crime. At least, just one side of it.
He looked at front of his building clean no one hanging out in front of it. (It's a safe place) versus the police sirens out in the city(unsafe) he now understands what Gossett was trying to teach him about safety
Thank you for this! I happened upon this movie after Mr. Gossett passed. Do you know who the young Black boy in Queens was? He looked like Keenan Ivory Wayans to me.
He didn't have to. My Hyatt's face said it all and John knew it. Even if he never did have the guts to say he was sorry, facial expressions say a thousand words. It was a powerful ending hearing those police sirens while viewing John and Mr. Hyatt. Sometimes a good ending doesn't need words.
1:32:24 imagine being 11 years old in the 80's watching this scene and asking your mother why isn't he trying. Then asking what do they him to do anyway? 😕
This movie has a similar theme to the 2004 movie "Crash", in that the proverbial "bad guy" is not necessarily all bad ...... "Crash" took the theme a step further, in that the proverbial "good guys" had some serious character defects that came to the surface when the chips were down in their lives.
An excellent movie. Very relevant then and unfortunately more so now. There are always caveats to more laws, more security compared to those who want to hurt others. Look at security now in large cities, especially New York.
very good movie........ funny how the soft hearted sentimental fool was woken up to the reality of the dark element in our world and how to deal with it properly.........OM TAT SAT
He never checked to see if he was telling the truth about the boy being rehired. If he took the shiv found in the alley it make sense the guy would make another one. If there are cameras on the front and only one tenant on the ground floor who doesn't secure his window then chances are they would get burgled. Seems to me he was intimidated by this guy whom everyone admired including his wife and son. (A son who went from wanting to go to work with dad to wanting to spend more time with the cool war vet
I was quite surprised at how visual the rape scene was for a movie of those times... OAN: I hollered when LGJ pressed the horn on that truck because I know Martin Sheen peed his pants being right in front of the truck 🤣🤣🤣🤣
