John Bartholomew’s mindset and demeanour after a loss continues to be inspiring. I don’t think there is anyone like him. I hope one day I can enjoy the loss as much as he does. It’s clear this mindset makes him an outstanding player
I watched you playing bullet on stream last week. You were on fire, like every game was Andrew Tang. You said "when you're on a hot streak, don't question it. Let it ride". Thanks for that, great advice
Interesting engine disagreement at 36:52. After 21. K-f1, my Stockfish16 at depth ~22 evaluates 21...R-e2 as -3, going soon to -4.9 at higher depths. So a killer move in engineland. But in the video Stock16 Lite (depth 16) has it as only -1. Both continue 22.Bxf5 Rxd2 but then diverge. This is the only place I noticed such a large difference but there may have been others. I don't know if this happens a lot since I very rarely track one of these games on my desktop.
Just signed up for the newsletter! I’d love to read the post on gaining confidence and self belief. That sounds extremely beneficial. Thanks for the awesome content as always, John!
Hi John, new website looks awesome. Subscribed to the newsletter and forwarded it to all my improving chess friends. Just wondering if you have to ambition and/or plan to breakthrough to the GM level any time soon?
Thanks for signing up and sharing - I truly appreciate it! As for GM ambitions, probably not any time soon, but I haven't totally ruled out a run for the title.
Entertaining, educational...we get the usual bene's with John but it hits different with the *rare* loss. He takes it in stride with a smile and quickly learns something in the analysis. We should all be like John...
Daniel, great to hear from you, my friend!! I miss our lessons as well! I'm going to try and swing by Denmark soon so we can hang and do an in-person session again 🙂
John Batholomew talking about time management...😂 Just kidding. Got to learn a lot from your previous climbing the rating ladder (year 2016 or 2017 in youtube). Hope to learn something from this series as well.
It was actually the Alireza-Pragg game, and they called it the "queen sandwich with rooks for bread" which is not quite as elegant as Bartholomew's water pistol! ua-cam.com/users/livew1sdYpTzq3c?si=ig28TAvP9LIZ1bBN&t=3h44m07s
I've been watching your channel for years, but just now I noticed that you and Max Miller from Tasting History could be family, you have so similar features.
Hi John, long-time fan and we've actually had a couple games! I run the North Dallas Chess Club and get asked your chess improver questions quite a bit. Would you ever approve usage of your website/image as a place we can direct club members? Also, if you're ever in Dallas, we'd love to host you! We have several NMs and a GM in residence and it would be a dream to have you hop in for some casual chess!
Absolutely - I'd be honored for you to link my website/use my image for your club members! And that sounds great, I'm down in the DFW area from time to time, and I'd be happy to visit your club.
We sit and watch the Hikarus and Naroditskys of the world premove entire endgames in under two seconds. It's easy to take for granted the insane amount of speed and skill that takes. It's not normal!! I still flag with 5 second increment. They even gifted the rook back with a fork, were it not for the fact that their pawn was just too fast. You can actually fork and take the pawn. The computer says the white king has no choice but to ignore the knight and go after black's pawn. Amazingly, there are still chances! (Except for having 2.5 seconds to win knight and two vs rook.) :D
A reversed Stafford?! - interesting! You realize the advantage can't be as big for the side with a pawn up when a tempo down, but my guess was - 0.49. It seems like it's not even that much.
Probably a bigger advantage for Black than the Chess.com analysis indicates here; their engine seems to compress the evaluation a lot. Big an interesting, practical idea, yes!

Your graceful acceptance of a loss is as much to be admired as your technical skills. It's as important a lesson as any other you've taught us.
Bartholomew’s Water Pistol 🔫 😂😂😂.
That made me spit out my water lol
😂😂😂
Maybe Barthomomew's Bazooka.
Read this before seeing that and I was so confused 😂 🤣
Lmao I was about to comment that and it's the first one
Very instructive when you turned your attention to the queenside to stir up the position... The website looks fantastic, btw!! Thanks, John!
Johnny was playing climbing the rating latter, opponent was playing clock as a weapon 😂
😂😂 So true!
I watched you playing bullet on stream last week. You were on fire, like every game was Andrew Tang. You said "when you're on a hot streak, don't question it. Let it ride". Thanks for that, great advice
Glad you caught that one! Yup, "never question a hot streak." I might post that stream because you're right, it was fire 🔥

Great point. I'm not sure why the Chess.com engine is so shallow; it really compresses evals into a narrow range
Glad you're getting started with your new site! Hope you do more Lichess plays in the future!
I don't know why I keep putting myself through the stress of watching you in time trouble. That was a fun game though haha.
Congratulations John! Your website looks sleek and I hope to see it expand and become popular in the future. Good luck and greetings from Iran. :)

Thanks so much!
Love the new thumbnail design, but it reads like 'The Ladder Climbing Rating'
dont dead open inside
It really does.
I think it's OK - people can just meme it if they want (I won't take offense) :)

Haha David Sacks calling out @johnbartholomewchess in the All-in podcast - ua-cam.com/video/HKtlezdPNAI/v-deo.html -- nice!
Akelhine's gun, cos its slightly out of order
Nice one 😂
"What do you call queen in the middle" just came up in the Caruana-Nakamura game today!
Too funny!! I don't suppose they said "Bartholomew's water pistol" though...

Well atleast we got 2 brilliant moves in a row and that combination was very pretty!
You can bet I'll be all over your website.
IMs hate this One Weird Trick! :) Good luck on the new site John!
Thank you! 😁😁
Exciting ending!
Hey Kurt - good to see you in the comments! :)

Never heard of this person, but I will check them out - I like historical stuff 😀
Missed you, buddy

Slick website. Did you make it yourself?
Thanks. A friend/student of mine designed it for me - he is amazing
Let's go , new YT video🤤🔥
Let's GOOOO!
I think there was also Nf6 instead of nd2+ and the queen is dead
I like when you make websites.
I missed that community post... now I feel like a bad viewer! Better late than never, though. The website looks good!
All good - I appreciate you checking out now!
nice chess there
oh darn, no april fools video this year?
