  • Just a quick video showing you how you can disguise and fix the gaps and white lines between wallpaper seams if the paper has had shrinkage. This method uses a similar shade of paint to the wallpaper itself and is very quick to do.

Gentlemen, thank you very much for showing me this technique. I had a seam when I reglued wallpaper after a water leak caused it to separate from the sheetrock. I took a sample of the wallpaper to Lowes and they did a computer match which averaged the colors. As you suggested I focused the darker shades. I'm very pleased with the result. Had I not seen your video I was probably going to strip off the wallpaper and texture and paint the walls. This technique hid the seam very well so that it is not at all noticeable. You saved me a ton of work!

To put it short- apply (color scanned) paint to the problematic area, instantly brush the area off with a clean wet sponge and go over the area with a clean tissue. Definitely worth a watch for a clear understanding.
That said, I will now go try to fix my gaps. Thank you!

Jesus lads, 12 quid a roll?? That's as cheap as it gets... Never ever hang a dark paper on a light coloured wall. I recently hung a paper which cost €1200.00 PER ROLL. What should have been done here was to colour the edges with a WAX crayon before you started..

You colour the edges before you roll out the paper. It's not usually the wall behind you can see, it's the white backing of the paper.

Ok good tips but I will tell you simple way and save you a lot of bother .get your sample pot as you said then take your unopened wallpaper and only open at ends then sponge the paint lightly onto both ends as it is still tightly rolled inside it won’t creep onto wallpaper then just let it dry completely and you go to wall paper your edge will all be grey in your case and seem won’t be white .ive Been a decorator 30 years and it works for me hope it helps you

I’m a paperhanger in dc and i get away with this trick all the time, accept I’m even lazier. I just use a pack of crayola magic markers to stain it.
As long as the value of the stain is darker than the backing color, those lines will disappear 9 times out of 10. However it’s still better to just to hang a proper butt seam to start.

You could colour the ends of the rolls with chalk of a similar colour before hanging the paper .Dark coloured papers on white back grounds are a pain. But your tip is good to deal with paper thats hung and dried out.

Just seen this and the obvious mistake is over soaking the paper. 10 mins is too long. Soaking for too long causes the paper to over expand as it absorbs the paste. You then get subsequent overshrinkage as it dries. The other issue is that oversoaked paper stretches very easily as you move it in to place which also causes gaps as it dries.
I would always recommend lining paper as this helps and only let paper soak for more than a few minutes if you need the paper to be more pliable, when papering around tricky features etc.
Last thing make sure heating is off in room while paper dries.
    Decorator 15+ years
^^This is a great tip however if you do end up with gaps

I have to say that I tried this and was not too happy with the result. Immediately after it was done it looks invisible, but when the light direction changed it was possible to see a difference in reflection where the paint had been vs the rest of the wallpaper. It's a very slight effect, but once I'd seen it my eye kept being drawn to it. This was in my living room and I just hated the thought of having to eye that defect for the next twenty years. So in the end the only permanent cure was a second layer of the same wallpaper with the seams staggered with respect to the first. Luckily I had bought too much wallpaper and the really dark stuff was only on one wall.

As the light shines in at different times of the day at certaine angles youd still see the joines due to the gaps . It hasnt gone its coverd . Always line the wall first before papering as this would of held the paper in place during the drying stages. Also ready mix paste is probley the best to use here too . 12 pound a roll is very cheap paper imo .
