    Time for part 3 of me, a complete amateur attempting to carry out repairs on my £800, 300,000 mile Volvo XC90 that I bought from auction at Copart, to get it through it's MOT...

      All you needed to do was remove the caliper , carrier and disc , then the drop link , then the 2 hub to strut bolts and the hub is free to float in free space , with 1 hand you could have dropped it on the arm and then done it all back up .

      Do ball joints on the floor it’s easier…
      Jack up the wheel you want to change, wheel off, axel stand in behind arm, bricks under the disc, drop down & Jack out, swap ball joint and use the Jack to push up the new ball joint bolt 👍🏻

      Buy yourself a Haynes workshop manual off bay of e approximately £23 and read it before you do the job in hand, if you are ever replacing a droplink just chop the nuts off with a grinder with a slitting disk in it makes is so much easier
      But do get a Haynes manual

    It takes a brave person to record and broadcast (unfiltered) learning new skills for all the world to see (and laugh at/criticise), I applaud you for doing it. However, I think most of us have either admiration and/or are quite happy to provide helpful feedback. I’d agree with some comments that this is some of your best content so far, I suppose the problem will be that when you get really good it might not be as entertaining!!!!! 😉👍😂

    Got an XC70 which I just replaced the lower control arm and ball joints on too, two flipping days of blood, sweat, tears and a lot of brute force and effing and jeffing and got their in the end so I was rooting for you throughout these videos, bravo sir.

      When replacing control arm ,its better to conect the ball joint first and then connect the arm to the chassis, have done it that way several times with great success.

    It looks to me like you were actually tightening that drop link nut at around the 12 min mark. Stick with it, your skills and techniques, and of course knowledge will grow with you. We've all been where you are. When I was young and skint I had to change a gearbox in my Mk1 Escort for work the next morning on the street outside my house. It pissed down with rain, I was soaked and freezing. Got it done by midnight and the last thing to do was connect the clutch cable. It wouldn't reach because i'd installed the clutch arm back to front in the gearbox. It had to all come out again :( It was quicker next time round and I got to bed about 4am for a 7am start. I'd also thrown my overalls in the washing machine which coated it with gearbox oil, which ruined our first babies clothes on the next wash :D I was not popular with the missus for a while. Actually, i'm still not, and i'm 57 :D

    Good work with the attempt its good to see people having a go. I saw that at 11.28 you were turning the nut to tighten not loosen it might be why it wasn't coming off :/

      thats not the issue ... he was trying to tighten to break lock but its pointless as its a balljoint and rotates ... it has a hex cut in centre to prevent rotation. he needs to use hex and ring spanner and it comes off easily

      @@awesomed007 mostly true but in almost every case like his you must use a ball joint splitter as it won't rotate due to being jammed in place with rust or other oxidation. The ring spanner and he but should have been the right way as you said and turning it the right way. Heat could have been applied too. Nevermind he has moved on.

      @@cocobunji1211 yeah, if hex and ring doesn't budge it, heat or penetrating fluid would help. Brake fluid works just as well.

    Joel some friendly advice get a garage to fix it,the fact you were trying to tighten the drop link nut instead of undoing it is gonna lead you to hurting yourself.oh and please don't attempt the injector as it'll probably be stuck in the head and your gonna end up damaging something.

    This video made me chuckle, remembering when I first started working on my own cars long ago. Trying to work out how to do things with a limited tool kit. It's amazing how inventive you can be when you need to. The satisfaction when you finally manage get that stubborn unreachable bolt undone makes it all worthwhile.

    I feel your pain! I get inspired watching things like the Goonsquad and Salvage Rebuilds UK, but know deep down I don't have the experience, tools or knowledge to tackle things like this, you're providing a valuable service by showing how hard it is and putting me off. Appreciated. 👍😉

    Mate you're doing really well! It's humbling to watch you expose yourself like this and being brave enough to put this out on the internet. As an occasional content creator I can identify with the issues that the internet can bring. Without a shadow of a doubt these are the best videos you have ever done.     You don’t have to replace all 5 injectors, just the faulty one. And if you are getting a compression leak past the injector you can just replace the copper seal and tighten it down.

      Hm, i think it's better to replace all 5, or at least, refurbish them, because the amount of fuel between cylinder will differ from new to old injectors, as older ones flow much worse than new

      @@xnrs9334 The ECU will account for that. On a lot of engines you'll have to code in the specific injector. I would ideally not replace the leaking one, just replace the copper seal with a new one (check if it has done damage to the cylinder head first) and put the old one back in.

      @@xnrs9334 it can detect the amount of engine knock and the combustion quality from the o2 sensor which allows it to fine tune the injector injection amount. Mercedes ecus for example will show you the injector duty cycle offset learned VS programmed time.

      @@tschuuuls486 well, the thing is that there is only 1 lambda sensor for all 5 cylls, and 2 knock sensors, so idk how it should work

    I am sure someone has done a bell curve showing age of vehicle vs difficulty to fix/work on… but the rustier and older they are balances out against the simplicity of design vs a newer car, resulting in easy jobs becoming a nightmare. Having been there too many times, and missing the right tool/part at the right time, it’s all part of the experience. Good on you for taking up the mantle.

      Makes working on your pals and missus' stuff a piece of cake though. All that time in the trenches, working on tired, high mileage cars of your own gains you a lot of exposure to all sorts of problems.

    Main dealers rarely hit these issues, hence your problems generally go to a small independent garage re costs and age.

      If you have a decent impact gun. You could have done them up to snap the bolt and just pull the drop link out. Takes seconds

    Love the white trousers Joel... I think you've just discovered what overalls are intended for! Your efforts (and mistakes) take me back to my first days mending my own car. Persevere my friend, and you will have a skill for life. You'll also end up with a toolkit that will always have that 'odd' size you need. Well done!

    The PCV systems, notorious for clogs,

    Crocs are cool, fact! I'm a 59 year old woman who wears these in the boardroom, in the car and in the shower. But I have to agree that they're suboptimal workshop footwear... Unless the good old Croc is about to be made in a steel toecapped form. I'd wear those for a meal in a posh restaurant too.😮
    You're doing fine, everyone has to begin somewhere and mistakes are a great learning experience.

    Anyone who has learned car mechanics has been there. It's the only way to learn. Believe it or not, you are lucky, as In my day there was no internet, with nice videos telling you how to do everything. Always a good idea to have someone with you though, for safety, help, and ideas. Good luck.

    Great video Joel. I've been working on my own cars now for more years than I'd like to admit to and have accumulated sooooooo many tools yet there always seems to be one I haven't that I need! You'll get there eventually as you have the determination.

    good on you Joel for having a go with it all, mechnics on old cars is a bitch to do, nothing is ever easy with old rust bolts etc, i worked in the motor trade for 30 years but now i leave it to the pros. hope you get this old girl through the mot soon.

    Footwear was hilarious. I liked the comment about the Techs in garages. and the skills they have. It takes decades to learn these skills and the technology is constantly changing. Also College Tutors teaching City & Guilds Automotive. The aftermarket vehicle repair community are so highly skilled and hard working.

      If only the people on the spanners in these garages got paid closer to the charge out rate being charged... I agree that the techs deserve the money, but most of the hourly rate goes to the business and not into the pocket of the mechanic...

      @@dougle03 my local garage pays it's mechanics pretty well. The last job advert I saw was for £45k/pa so above the national average by a good chunk, especially in rural Suffolk.

      @dougle03 that's how businesses work. The workshop has plenty of overheads to cover long before it can pay staff. Solicitors bring 10x their monthly salary to the business. If an employee wants a bigger share of the pie they need to setup on their own and take the risks themselves.

    Well done Joel. You made mistakes but all of us do. It's a steep learning curve for sure and we all experienced jobs like this but the eureka moment when you crack it is..well priceless.
    Suspension work is tough and unforgiving as you have found out especially on the first go. Following this with real interest btw.

    It can’t be seized if it’s liquid 😊. When all else fails you’ve got to get it hot! We’ve all been there when things don’t go as planned and take way longer than expected and you think why did I do it like that. Like others I’ve wished I could have been there to help at times but we’ve all been willing you on. Keep it up!

    Ball joints naturally want to turn - there's nothing preventing rotation. So to undo them or tighten them, you need to hold the shaft still. That's what the splined hole is for in the end. So you put a Torx bit in the end and then use a spanner on the outer nut. You can't use a socket on them.

    Stick with it Joel your learning along the way I would have tried a transmission Jack to hold the hub and lift it up to drop in the ball joint in place

    Well said giving credit to the folks who work on cars all day - it’s not easy. Glad you got the ball joint in - it’s odd with all my years of tinkering with cars it’s amazing how many times I’ve struggled to get something off/in/attached for hours, given up in disgust, gone back for one more try and presto it’s slides home no bother. I think it’s the car gods testing your metal and rewarding you for your persistence. Keep going mate.

    Thanks for your kind comments on Hard working Motor vehicle technicians doing this work on a daily basis, You mention high labour rates.. unfortunately it is not the technicians who get all that money , they will be lucky to get 10% - 15% of what labour rate you pay.

    Well done for giving it all a go, really frustrating when it doesn't go right though!
    You need a hex piece to hold the centre of the droplink pin and then use a ring spanner around it to turn the nut ... Were you not tightening the upper bolt in this video too ...

    I put a short chain around the control arm so the bar is under the rotor were I can sit my weight down on it while holding the rotor up to put the ball joint in. Have a lot more leverage and control that way.

    The headlights could have done with a wet sand. It’s so easy to do and normal heavy cut compound to finish off they come up like glass. You can also use the same polish on the rest of the car so you’re not wasting money. That headlight compound is just a small amount of a heavy cut at an extortionate cost. My preference is meguiars heavy cut compound. Then use a ceramic coat to seal it. Otherwise they will be 10 times worse in about a month or so

    Dont know how i came across this video bus as mechanic i can say you have chosen a hard car to work on without experience i owned x2 xc90 and now i own s80 and volvo cars are not easiest to work on, Respect ! :D

    Congratulations on the progression. Learning your way around always takes time but you’ll get there.
    I’d advise you to get down to Halfords and buy yourself a Halfords advanced tool kit. Worth the money and a great little starter kit too.
    To say your not a hands on car guy your doing alright to be fair. It will be worth it in the end.

    Headlamps are very quick and easy to remove from XC90's. Should have done that instead of polishing them in situ.

    Great work mate for givingbit a go... you was tightening the of side drop up not loosening of by the way and dont forget injector seal / copper washer which i assume youndidnt get with secong hand injector... love the vids

    Well done you! In fairness its very different in a professional garage as they have the tools for those pain the the ass jobs. Makes a huge difference... Have done bottom arms and drop links in the past too. One was a dream to do as and all came apart with only a little persuasion. The other was a high mile car where everything was solid and corroded too. Took for ever and a very big hammer. Keep it up cant wait till you finally get it back on the road...

    I really admire how you are climbing a steep learning curve and making it public. I have a black '08 xc90 d5 too and I only clean and polish it a couple of times a year. Btw, the paint and seats still look ok on yours. My Volvo specialist charged 150 euros to change those control arms

    For the droplink, hacksaw if you don't have the power tools or drill the bolt through. I had to do it myself when I was in the same situation. New suspension parts do require you being heavy-handed, no other way about it mate. Keep on focused and can't wait for part 4!

    You have probably been shown now but for the top anti-roll bar link you need a ring spanner and an allen key (Hex) as you can see on the end of the bolt thread you can fit the allen key to hold the bolt while the ring spanner turns the nut.
    But great effort, when things go right you do get a great sense of achievement, well done and keep going 😃👍

    It really does go either way doesn’t it , it comes loose or you spend 2 hours on it and end up rounding the bolt off!
    Great feeling though you accomplish the jobs 🙌

    Well done for having a go! Best investment is a universal spanner.... angle grinder! I don't bother trying to carefully remove drop links... impact to start them either with a gun or big hammer before gently removing with yer grinder, don't forget some thread lock if the new nuts aren't nylock? Sometimes it doesn't help working at height, finally you realised drop it and use a jack. Don't know if D5 injectors need coding? Don't forget your seals and possible seat grinding if you have "black death"?

    Awesome achievement, it always feels so much better when you try things for yourself. Well done on your determination and passion!
    It took a mobile mechanic over 2 hours to remove my rusted old drop links on my Range Rover L322, sometimes the car does not want to help even when it looks so simple at first....

    I’m sure most viewers have been through the “learning curve” and can relate to some extent (I know I can) or will be inspired (or maybe put off 😂) thinking about doing some home mechanics. Next time you will have the tools, and it should be easier 🤞 but inevitably, something will go wrong, and you will get a lot out of it, there is nothing like the feeling when you achieve something that you thought was impossible or beyond your abilities. Great content too.

    ive had my fair share of rusty old cars mainly landrovers that i work on myself as im too tight to pay somone else just keep going it always works out in the end or theres always the other alternative fix it with FIRE LOL

    Joel , with the ball joint, use a torx bit and a spanner, you will be able to stop it spinning, the torx goes in the centre of the ball joint and can stop it spinning then the spanner u tighten it up ..
    Same with anti roll drop links, use torx or alan key and use spanner to undo. Hope that helps, if u need any information drop me a message mate 👍

    I have to say that you probably picked the most difficult control arm replacement job to begin with. I’ve been in the exact situation with xc70 control arm job and had to use a lot of force to achieve anything. Good effort and definitely not the easiest task to start with 💪🏻

    Normally piece of chain or old exhaust clamp, wrap around the lower arm, bolt the chain together use a big bar, to give enough leverage down to get the arm back into the hub, saves buying the tool for it
