I bought my xc90 for £800 aswell, it has a abs light oil leak engine mounts where shot, no mot and a horrible misfire that I changed a injector for a brand new one, just over 2k for all the work to be done, and I wouldn’t change it, the thing is brilliant, the injector fault turned out the be the connector, I’d probably suggest checking those, I had to close the connectors up slightly to make good contact
What a joke of a garage. Falsifying an MOT by deleting the error code which they know full well will come back on in 30 miles. Genuine discs, pads, shoes and adjusters are around about £200. Those prices are ludicrous. Glad it's got a ticket, although a dodgy one
Fraudulent behaviour , knowing it will come back and its not just the light you could see the abs ring was cracked so that is a fail in itself. So it's a bent mot it's as simple as. That.
Check the vacuum out of the vacuum pump to the turbo wastegate / engine mounts is working. There tiny rubber seal in the one-way valve in the lid of the vacuum pump. The valves often fails. And rough idling is injectors. And maybe the whole inlet manifold is filled with gunk (sticky oily mess) caused by the EGR. In the A pillars are drain pipes from the sunroof, these pipes crumble and fail, causing water ingress in the front footwell and drowning the stability control unit. Check the alternator brushes (and bearings).
I love the original XC90 - I had one from new (2007) until 2017 and did about 120k miles in it. The wife clobbered the driveway gate with it and we decided to trade it in at that point and I still miss it. However (there’s always a but!) they are a complex machine with some very annoying design “quirks” that make things that should be relatively straightforward to fix extremely hard. A small oil leak from the gearbox? Take the whole engine out - 20 hours of labour. Issues with the fiber-optics can often write the car off. The rear wheel drive part of the AWD often fails as the splines strip on the spline sleeve (and it happens again and again). Forget to change the auxiliary belt? Watch out because it will destroy the engine if it fails and wraps around the cogs. These cars are stupidly complex and expensive to maintain (even more so than Range Rovers). I would move it on and quickly!
Cheapest option you can try is taking a blowtorch and heating the surface of where she shaft goes into the hub, then use a bronze shaft to smash it out. It's helped me out a dozen of times on the crusty musty's. Never a guarantee that it'll work, but it'll save you the damages of them using a press.
Keep it lad! even for like 6 months and reconsider then enjoy it now you've put time and effort in. Great video like always tho glad its back on the road
I'm a fan of the XC90, and i'm on my second now, a 2009 V8 (and paying waaaaaaaay less in insurance than Joel, but i'm older!) However, with that car, you'll never get back the money spent if you were to sell it, and really, unless you can do everything yourself to keep the costs down, it was never going to make sense. As you don't have a family or dogs to carry round, maybe sell it quick making the most of the fresh MOT to re-coup as much as you can, and consider it a learning experience ?
Maybe because of Volvo's spare parts prices? Also all car insurance has increased significantly in cost over the past few months, as I found out at renewal time a few weeks ago
cmartin_ok It definetly will not be because of the price of volvo parts. A vehicle can be "written off" once the cost of repairs exceeds 75% of the value of the vehicle and this vehicle was only brought for £800
Parts for a 20 year old Xc90 are fairly cheap, lots around on different sites from scrapped cars to brand new parts. Love my 19 year old Xc90 wouldn't part with her.
Keep it and start fixing the issues yourself. Great fun, says a man who owns a V70 Classic from 1997 and 430.000 km on the clock ;) And no MOT difficulties, car is goi9ng strong. Thanks for the update!
Nice to see it back on the Rd, as for keeping it, we’ll that depends on how deep your pocket is and it will always be a 307k XC90! Personally I’d move it on. But 10/10 for perseverance
The 4W drive system doesn't work probable because the splines on the axle between gearbox and transfer box (angled gear for rear wheel drive) are gone/worn away. There are only two solutions: new transfer box, which is prohibitive expensive or the engineering options. This involve drilling holes in the sleeve that connects the transferbox to the gearbox which slides over the transferbox axle. Then drill a big hole in the transferbox casing so the sleeve can be welded through the transferbox housing hole using the holes in the sleeve to the axle. The alignment of the sleeve must be perfect. Close the hole in the transferbox with liquid metal. This last solution means the transferbox can never be disassembled anymore. So maybe put in new bearings before the welding. And put two oil seals in the gearbox (where the sleeve fits in), they tend to leak there. I did that 6 years ago to my XC90. 50k km later it still holds. If the splines are gone can easily be tested; can the propshaft to the rear wheels be turned with the engine off (safety) and gearbox in park? If yes, then transferbox problem.
Ever heard of 'Bangernomics'? It's an older theory of purchasing a 'banger' and keeping it running for as long as is physically and mechanically possible - which is basically what you're doing so keep it up!
Great news Joel! I would say it’s time the Xc90 moved on, no sense in throwing good $$ after it. Then maybe you can get alittle nicer Cayman? Cheers Kirk
Finally an update. 👍😃 This would make good future episodes how to fix old car and as others commented it is about going all in and fixing this old girl. Maybe you can join some other more mechanically minded youtuber and fix the abs using the big hammer or something. 😂 But I think if you give it away it is sort of half cooked. You can do quick check on AWD system. Go under the car and try to spin the prop shaft as car is in Park. If it spins, then your angle gear sleeve splines are gone. Will need new angle gear and sleeve. If it doesnt, then the issue is in broken or clogged Haldex pump. Otherwise I love the high mileage rescue. Keep up. 👍
That's the thing with these AWD, cause they don't go off road the rear diff doesn't detect any slip in the wheel so doesn't engage. Over time they seize and don't work. Evidently, just remove the prob shaft and you'll be fine 👍 - Mechanic by day - over 10yrs in volvo
There's a car lot a few miles from my house here in Kentucky selling an absolute mint 2008 XC90 with a V8 for $8k. If I had a need for a vehicle right now I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat.
06 320cd here. Had it 14 years and has been well maintained. no intention of getting rid. ( in 10 yrs it will probably be worth more than a new Ev 😂😂😂😂😂) new subscriber bye the way 👍👍👍
They are terrible for the driveshafts seizing, volvo have a hydraulic press that bolts to the hub. But even that sometimes doesn't budge them. Sometimes only option is to replace driveshaft and knuckle
£2K for insurance? My current policy cost me less than half of that. I'm a bit older than you so that might have something to do with it. Be thankful you're not paying £600+ in VED unlike certain Land Rover Discovery drivers. Fixing the AWD shouldn't be too expensive. I had to pay about £300 for a reconditoned DEM to fix mine. The fault codes will point you in the right direction. It would help if your bottom left display was working. Most other AWD problems are the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) which is integated in the clock spring, the yaw sensor (particularly if the sunroof is leaking), and stripped splines on the bevel gear (transfer box). You've done the right thing by getting it through the MoT first. The other stuff can be done at your lesiure. The parking brake can be a pig of a job but mine has always got through the test. I spent nowhere near as much on my rear brakes (discs, pads, parking brake shoes and the left rear caliper). My mechanic has had problems with stuck XC90 driveshafts but my front ones have come out without any problems. I once had that problem with a stuck drifeshaft when I was changing the rear wheel bearings on a BMW E36 318i. I found a hub puller tool in Machine Mart which got the driveshaft out.
So the brakes were £800 and the total bill was £1,200, did they charge £400 to fit a number plate bulb and swap the tyres over? Sounds like a great garage.
Keep it and have another go at fixing it's outstanding faults yourself, it'll be entertaining and you'll learn a lot. Also, I'm baffled by the cost of your insurance, I own one and it costs me less than £400 a year.
You need to get that ABS sorted pronto, or it will cause more problems. Even the wrong profile tyres will affect it and cost mega bucks, plus you want legal and safe braking.
There'd be viewers of this channel if they live in US or Australia who'd laugh at it having 300k on the clock and you were thinking of scrap it and that mileage in those countries is the norm. Just shows that high milers can still have life left in them.
Nope. AWD Volvos are normally 90% drive to the fronts, 10% to the rear unless wheel slip, then the electronics manage the traction. Because the front wheels do 90% of the work, - steer, brake and drive, that is where you want the new rubber. The rears only hold the back corners up.
Great series of video’s Joel, seems like the garage has maybe took you for a ride and the tyre fitter needs reporting he sounds like he should get another job where he won’t put anyone in danger!
As a Volvo owner, who has always liked the XC90 and still wants one, but loves his C70 too much better than the S40 he sold to get it….. id say it’s definitely worth it, they are lovely cars, and the D5 engines are made of granite, at 300k it’s only just run in, maybe a terraclean and your laughing, and as for the audio systems in these cars…. It’s a must to sort out, it’ll sound like a nite club on wheels…
Love your XC90, just out of curiosity, there must be history with the passenger door/wing. You have a dodgy repeater on the passenger wing, when it’s meant to be in the trim on the passenger door? Great series though, I’m look at XC90’s too
Hello, the AWD doesn't work probably due to the lack of haldex fluid change, check if there's a filter also. After changing it should engage. My V8 XC90 is still being worked on. The engine will get a second life, the steering is being changed and every bushing im the rear suspension. It cost me about $9000 to but and about $15000 to to keep it in excellent technical health. Hope to her it before Chrostmas 😂
Great to see the xc90 to be on the road, however… After so much efforts i really think this was a mistake to take such a shortcut with the ABS. Do have a question though - does it has 4wheel drive now, that the abs in not functional (as usually the haldex kicks the back end in only when slip is detected, and car needs abs sensors for that)? If not - back to my point: so many efforts and it’s not even a good winter car with the abs light shortcut…
Thanks for letting me know to AVOID that 'Swedish / Volvo Car Centre', terrible service (4 weeks with no updates!) and rip off bill. Best shop around for somewhere cheaper next time.
Hi Joel, I have to say this is one you should have avoided. It's a bit of a sorry outcome and it still has a myriad of faults MOT list and beyond that means you are most likely going to take a big bath on this project. Not sure about that Swedish Car Specialist clearing the code on a known mechanical issue just to get this nail out of their compound either.... Let's get back on track with your next project and lose this Volvo as soon as you can. I don't think the next big bill is too far away
Have to ask yourself An old 4x4 volvo which is only 2 wd, a knocking engine, no radio etc or anything fibre optic and a sagging headliner. Is it worth spending anything onit.
Sterling work Joel. Some people on here moaning that it has a dodgy MOT however if there is no warning light then they can pass it legally. End of. Doesn't matter who cleared the fault code. Fact is, there is no warning light at the point of MOT. Therefore genuine pass. Morally in the clear too. Garage knows it's a well known youtuber who isn't in the business of deception. Therefore Joel you did damn well and should be proud. Don't listen to the naysayers.
Clearing the ABS fault without fixing the problem is a cop out. Frankly the ABS is still faulty which should be an MOT failure so you are driving a car that is potentially unsafe. If it was me I would source the drive shafts and the hubs second hand and swap them out fixing the rings at the same time. It’s not a big job given you have had most of the nuts off already. But I guess that’s the difference between a car fixing channel and a driving channel.
You did a great job. Fantastic series of videos. But I think you should cut your losses and get shot of it. Defray from the financial loss the great content in 6 videos which got so many people hooked - plus the personal knowledge gained from doing it. If you could get the 4WD fixed maybe it could find a home on a farm. Anyway, well done you and thanks for taking us on the journey.
Have also been online looking at part prices and it does look like the SCC has stitched you up a bit. Won't be going there.. not just because I don't have a Swedish car
Had my xc90 2003 for 5 years it had done 233,000 miles, and the oil seal went between engine and clutch, just after I did a service on it, (it’s common to go after a service due to the higher oil pressure I was told, it would of cost a £1,000 to put right, I decided to get a c70 mkll, instead, my mate has it now had the work done and his still driving it about 6 months later. On the subject of insurance I was paying about £1,300 and then the magic 10 years came along and it dropped to £400 Will get another one next year maybe 😊
Vice grip garage does long road trips in far ropier cars than that XC90. I say take it to Sweden. It will be an adventure. I've slept in the back of my XC90 on a self inflating mattress. Plenty of room with the rear 2 rows of seats down and flat enough too.
Loving thr content Sell and get your money back ....... move on to thr nxt thing and keep things fresh 👌 ...... maybe a V12 Jag anti establishment ....... I know 😂
This has been an interseting series Joel, massive props to you for taking it on 'in public' like you have. Was it worth it (financially)? Probably not, especially since you weren't able to do all the work yourself. However it has taught you lots and it's made great content. Would I keep a 20 year old XC90? Not a chance - it still has some significant and potentially expensive faults. And that's coming from someone who runs a Rover 75 as a daily. Get it gone and on to the next one. 👍
I hope DVSA don’t see this otherwise they’ll be straight round to the specialist asking why they just cleared a code they know will come back on and passed it anyway.
@@alancobbin got think though worst case scenario the car ends up in an accident where someone dies because the abs wasn’t working correctly (or at all!) it’s literally documented on video that a garage turned the light out and passed it.
When you started it up it sounded like it was down on a cylinder. OK I watched on a bit and you spoke of why it's misfiring. NO way I would proceed with spending money on this until the engine fault was sorted. D5's are not lumpy at all, nice 5 cylinder burble tons of power and very smooth. Do yourself a favour and sort it quickly.
Keep it and continue the adventure! Those handbrakes are something you see more on these cars. Had mine replaced as well. That insurance is ridiculousely high, why is that, your age? Accident free years low because 2nd car? In the Netherlands I pay 47 euros a month for all risk insurance! But I do know road taxes in uk are much better, I pay 120 euros a month on road tax. So maybe together it is about the same. Do have to mention mine is a petrol, diesel road tax is even a lot higher.
Ah I'm sorry but that seems extortionate for what is just rear ds & ps and handbrake cables, that seems really really expensive and a really long time with what I presume is gonna be aftermarket anyway, I think you've been stung a little but good to see it's back! I had a S40 that I completely gave up on, it was absolutely mint and I spent the world on it but after non stop spending it left me with a really bitter taste and experience of Volvos and I've never had one since!
Joel , they done u over man , I'm a mot tester , you shouldn't clear a light and wack a mot on it , that is fraudulent behaviour, the tester is knowingly passing a failure item. Its not just about the light being off. He should of failed the abs ring cracked or damaged. You and him have missed the point. Could probably just a 2nd hand hug and driveshaft and be done with it. Basically u paid for a dodgy mot and rear discs and pads and shoes and a couple cables . Joel come on you know aswell. Because there's nothing new except new rear brakes lol 😆 but great vid anyway bud be lucky on next one.
Getting the steering wheel set straight should be no more than £30 at a small local tyre garage. They'll set steering wheel straight and adjust the tracking it takes about 15 mins. Enjoy

That.
Had all that handbrake work done on my Mk 1 S 80. Bought the bits from PFS and a local mechanic fitted them. Change out of £200.
Would love to see you keep working on this. Great series on this car!
Great story, I'd keep it till something very expensive went on it. Merry Christmas to you and your family Joel.
Great video! Well done for getting it through the MOT!
I'm a fan of the XC90, and i'm on my second now, a 2009 V8 (and paying waaaaaaaay less in insurance than Joel, but i'm older!)
However, with that car, you'll never get back the money spent if you were to sell it, and really, unless you can do everything yourself to keep the costs down, it was never going to make sense.
As you don't have a family or dogs to carry round, maybe sell it quick making the most of the fresh MOT to re-coup as much as you can, and consider it a learning experience ?
I have enjoyed this series so far and fair play mate for getting that MOT. What I don’t understand is why the insurance is so much.
Snap seems like a hell of a slug of money for an old car
Maybe because of Volvo's spare parts prices? Also all car insurance has increased significantly in cost over the past few months, as I found out at renewal time a few weeks ago
cmartin_ok
It definetly will not be because of the price of volvo parts. A vehicle can be "written off" once the cost of repairs exceeds 75% of the value of the vehicle and this vehicle was only brought for £800
Parts for a 20 year old Xc90 are fairly cheap, lots around on different sites from scrapped cars to brand new parts. Love my 19 year old Xc90 wouldn't part with her.
love your videos Joel, very honest with everything and a true gent. keep em coming.
Saving iconic cars, what an important job that we need more people doing!
Great result Joel. I find it very satisfying to keep older cars on the road. I have three, with an average age of 22 years. Thank you..
What a result! Great to see her MOT'd. Now you have options, and with the work you did yourself, she has a greater value.
Congrats Joel, clean it, lol what abt a long trip test , range etc look forward to the next installment
The transferbox can be taken out without taking the engine out. However there are some really hard to reach bolts/nuts.
Ever heard of 'Bangernomics'? It's an older theory of purchasing a 'banger' and keeping it running for as long as is physically and mechanically possible - which is basically what you're doing so keep it up!
Joel, I think you should get an Audi A6 Allroad as a winter rubber
Keep up. 👍
Glad you've saved it... redex dpf in the tank and VPower fuel would probably help the engine run better.
( in 10 yrs it will probably be worth more than a new Ev 😂😂😂😂😂) new subscriber bye the way 👍👍👍
Have you thought about using lanogaurd under the rear to protect the rusty areas?😊
Great up see it saved! I'd maybe sort the headliner if you're going to move it on, or even if you're not, it would make such a difference.
The answer is yes, you can get a double mattress in the back. As to 4X4 it's the haldex unit on rear axle. It's an etremely common fault.
My xc90 2009 was 450quid from admiral 10 years driving too. Have a shop around.
Also you could buy a pair of part worn tyres for the rear.👍
So the brakes were £800 and the total bill was £1,200, did they charge £400 to fit a number plate bulb and swap the tyres over? Sounds like a great garage.
lets talk about why your insurance is so high???
Wahey! Joel great to see another video with the volvo. I did actually check yesterday infact to see if I had missed an upload on it 😂
Keep it and have another go at fixing it's outstanding faults yourself, it'll be entertaining and you'll learn a lot.
New wheels always go in the back. Great that you got it back in the road. Cheers from Argentina!
Nope. AWD Volvos are normally 90% drive to the fronts, 10% to the rear unless wheel slip, then the electronics manage the traction. Because the front wheels do 90% of the work, - steer, brake and drive, that is where you want the new rubber. The rears only hold the back corners up.
I can't believe the cost of discs and pads all round. I could have done that job in a day or two for say £300. Thank god I can do my own repairs
Theirs a reason why Internet mechanic’s don’t work in garages.
Meaning ?@@alancobbin
Great series though, I’m look at XC90’s too
Try the headlining that will be fun!
Best series ever 🚜
Most understanding wife in the history of mankind 👆🏻
Hi Joel. Great update. Does the ABS function at all?? X
Hope to her it before Chrostmas 😂
you have a mot now how come as the abs light is still lt up which is a failure ???
Great news! Glad to see it back on the road
Have to ask yourself
An old 4x4 volvo which is only 2 wd, a knocking engine, no radio etc or anything fibre optic and a sagging headliner.
Bangernomics works, but only in the long term. It is very satisfying to keep a car going.
On the subject of insurance I was paying about £1,300 and then the magic 10 years came along and it dropped to £400
Will get another one next year maybe 😊
Iv done all the same work to mine and my shaft was stuck in the hub and the AWD doesn't work due to the sleeve not to bad a job
I know 😂
2 grand to insure it? You're being reamed lad. Confused.com quoted me £350.
Pretty common for drive shafts to be seized. Not impressed by the workshop giving up on it.
Please keep the car, the tracking and electrical could be low-cost
Ok at the time of test 🤷♂️
@@alancobbin got think though worst case scenario the car ends up in an accident where someone dies because the abs wasn’t working correctly (or at all!) it’s literally documented on video that a garage turned the light out and passed it.
yeah and i hope the DV"L"A dont check your typing skills
@@Jam555s Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency = DVSA 👍🏻
Big time I'm a dvsa tester and I want to know who this garage is.
Please be the video where it is finished
Worth a like mate! Sleep well!
Outstanding effort Joel. Sell as spares or repair?
Keep it and continue the adventure! Those handbrakes are something you see more on these cars. Had mine replaced as well. That insurance is ridiculousely high, why is that, your age? Accident free years low because 2nd car? In the Netherlands I pay 47 euros a month for all risk insurance! But I do know road taxes in uk are much better, I pay 120 euros a month on road tax. So maybe together it is about the same. Do have to mention mine is a petrol, diesel road tax is even a lot higher.
2k 😮.... i know insurance has gone up, but jeez. My maserati 4200 is due in April, cant wait lol 😅
Although the car may not make financial sense to keep on the road the work you've done in the episodes was brilliant✌️
Parking brake is a nightmare and very difficult to get right.
Ah I'm sorry but that seems extortionate for what is just rear ds & ps and handbrake cables, that seems really really expensive and a really long time with what I presume is gonna be aftermarket anyway, I think you've been stung a little but good to see it's back! I had a S40 that I completely gave up on, it was absolutely mint and I spent the world on it but after non stop spending it left me with a really bitter taste and experience of Volvos and I've never had one since!
personaly i would not let you change a bulb on my car but give credit where credit is due you did well to get it done
Looking forward to the 24H in the Volvo Joel!
Bravo Joel. Excellent series.
Getting the steering wheel set straight should be no more than £30 at a small local tyre garage. They'll set steering wheel straight and adjust the tracking it takes about 15 mins. Enjoy
