Solo in Saigon's most dangerous district 🇻🇳

- 🇻🇳 Saigon tends to have a somewhat bad reputation for being a city with a lot of stealing, especially drive-by phone snatching and bag snatching. 3 years ago in Saigon I saw it firsthand happen right in front of me. It tends to be more common in certain areas and on certain roads, according to my friends. Today with my bag and camera, I went to one of Saigon's infamous "rough" districts, a place people told me not to go, to see how the stereotypes hold up. Would I get my bag or camera stolen? Would I be stared at by thugs? Or would I meet friendly, curious locals. Come watch and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Oh, for good knees and legs for walking. I used to walk 4-5 miles a day in Honolulu in the 1970s and 80s, but those times are over. I just past 80 a few days ago. Thank you for taking me on this walking tour.
I mentioned at the beginning that I had visited a dangerous part of Saigon in 1966, Southwest of Nguyey Hue Blvd, somewhere along the river dock area. Now I recall that the danger was not pickpocketers but Viet-Cong, and after walking around for a while, I believe some local suggested it would be better if I leave for my own safety. As you have experienced, speaking the local language is a very big factor in getting smiles and good advice.

Chris, the interaction with the locals at the noodle shop was so genuine. The overall positive vibe and fun spirited conversation was moving.
Glad you enjoyed it! The people there were super nice! I love small places cause you get genuine reactions and positive vibes like you said.

I was literally gonna say this video is so wholesome , I’m Cambodian and I lived in Vietnam in hai phong in the spring of 2008 for 3 months and in 2009 for another 3 months , I find it so freaking amazing, how fluent u are !
Yeah. Except for eating dog.
First two minutes of the video, he called out two other things that are more dangerous in Saigon than robbery/thieves: traffic and heat.
I lived in District 8 for several years and never worried about thieves, being robbed or any kind of dangers. Roamed around the neighborhoods too. Recognized some of the streets and buildings you passed and just like you, got lots of friendly smiles. Stay safe. New subscriber now.
Logically, you don’t steal stuffs in a place where you’re living in.
I loved this video so much!!! Thank you for shedding light on so many topics that affect all of our societies, especially in America. I wish I lived in Vietnam like you!! As a first-gen vietnamese American who’s parents escaped in 79’, seeing you create this INCREDIBLE videos makes me feel so much closer to my culture. The irony of who is delivering this message is the cherry on top of the entire experience! I sit and watch your videos with mom when she comes over to hang out with me! Lol we love you Chris! Trying to twist moms arm to go back with me but she’s still so scared. Hope to meet you soon one day!

What a fantastic vid! I really loved seeing you speaking with the people at the food stall. Being willing to learn a language like that makes all the difference in the world. I’ve come to your vids from Max’s - I enjoy seeing you travelling and enjoying the world together. Wherever you both are I wish you a safe and happy Christmas :)
Chris great job, it's not just about the food on your videos, it's about everything else which makes watching your videos so great.
That first stop for food, you shared the same 3 cups for tea, not very safe considering the Covid situation
Good job buddy and thanks for posting in English for your English speaking viewers and nothing wrong with interacting in Vietnamese with the locals. It's what makes you unique.
Vietnamese viewers are trying to learn English especially the pronunciation part so perhaps this will be a win win situation for your future shows.
that was very nice of you , to Chris , years a go i live in District 1 , see him walking around i was worry but he seem to be ok greeting from SD CA
I kind of like the walking video like this. It helps me have another look to a different area in saigon. You should do more stuff like this. Keep it up chris!
Glad you enjoyed it!
You work really hard for your videos! You live in the north but you are brave enough to explore the south, going to different districts to make interesting videos! People often don't realise how much work you have to put in to make a video! I hope people will appreciate yours and Max's and Phúc mập's videos more! Best wishes to you all
Nice work Chris! Good to see you immerse yourself in the culture and investigate every nook and cranny. Definitely a down to earth and personal perspective, things that tourists don't get to see. The local seem to respect you, prob because your viet is fluent and they didn't make fun of you.
Love that interactions with the locals, Chris. And you're right, in San Francisco, you really have to turn on your situation awareness.

Wow. I am getting tired just watching you walk such a distance. This was a really good video. You can totally feel the vibe of the place. The interaction with the workers eating on the sidewalk stand was fantastic.
I do agree with you "poor doesn't necessarily means bad". Cheers.
What a video Chris, you are going to places not too many tourists would go. The part when you are eating hu tieu and chat with the people around there was awesome. Keep it up.
Thanks for the video, Chris! We rarely see videos on UA-cam from areas off the beaten path in Vietnam...this one was such a delight. Enjoyed the convo with the friendly, always smiling locals. Also wondering why people leave their clothes to dry out on the street if there is such a big problem with theft. Maybe the clothes isn't worth stealing?
Man I thought I'd exhausted all the possible options for Vietnam/Saigon youtube channels, and then suddenly I discover yours with half a million subs and a shitload of videos all from Saigon. Excellent! I'm moving there soon, just waiting for visa stuff to get sorted. Great to see a channel with someone who can speak the language too. I speak Mandarin and am hoping to pick up VNese as fast as possible. And I like going to uncommon areas, similar to what you've done in this vid. Motivational and inspirational, thanks!
Glad you found the channel haha. Yeah I used to do videos all in Vietnamese but just recently switched to English about a month ago so that may be why you just found me 😂🤜 I was also in your position when I started learning Vietnamese (I also speak mandarin before learning Vietnamese) and it definitely helps out. Thanks for watching and best of luck!
@@chrismixlewis yeah I know you speak Mandarin, I saw your cholon vid too. Impressive! Genuinely envious; I hope to be doing exactly that kind of thing a couple of years from now.
I like all videos you have been posted. Thanks Chris
This is so wholesome- locals commending you on your Vietnamese. Good job!
My ex lives in a beautiful high rise in D8. I've been there a few times and the people were very nice. Every district has dodgy characters. I'd be surprised if they'd seen a ginger before. I'm Scottish so we are the land of ginger people.
What a wonderful video. The locals are so welcoming.
Love how you've learned the language so well.
First video of yours I've watched. Looking forward to more.
Chris, become your fan recently. I think you have huge advantage over other foreigner tourists since you speak Vietnamese fluently. You're instantly welcome in conversation with the local's open arms. Good luck with your everyday new adventure. People in Vietnam mostly are good and friendly. Just don't be wrong place at wrong time. That is true every where you go in this world. Video footage is improving with not too much shaking! Good job!
Exactly! Language is the gateway to anything in a foreign country, especially connecting with people.
Thanks for your comment! And glad the video footage is getting better haha. 🤣 trying to pay attention to how fast I move the camera.
Wow, love the new style format for your videos...enjoyed the tour of district 8 👍 😆

Totally agree, their is something wholesome and beautiful about having a meal with complete strangers and connecting on a deeper level as if you knew them for years. Been debating moving out of Mainland America too :/.
Many vloggers make the same mistake. They all go to a "dangerous" area and claim that it is, in fact, safe. However, they dont mention that going to the same place AT NIGHT may be a different story.

You speak Vietnamese really, really, really well Chris! Very little accent if any... for being in country for only 3 years, you’re doing superb!
It took no time for me to subscribe to your channel...
BTW, have you heard of the show “Nhập Gia Tuỳ Tục”? Check It out. I think you’re a good candidate for that show.
Best of luck to you my friend!
I am a native Vietnamese, born and raised in Hanoi. I am currently living in Saigon. I have to admit that:
- You vietnamese is super!!! 100% accent from Hanoi. I love it.
- Your vietnamese vocabularies is also excellent. I was exactly like you when first time trying "Orange cake". It tastes nowhere near Orange at all. Then I realized that it is called "bánh cam" in Saigon and "bánh rán" in Hanoi. Actually it is the same thing with different names.
- i have never ever explored that much in Saigon. Your video are very useful. Now I can imagine what district 8 looks like 😂.
- you are very brave to eat the "Hu Tieu" street food and then even drunk the tea with the SAME SHARED cup.
After watching your clip, I have to subcribe to your channel. Excellent work mate !
You’re so brave, Chris. I grew up in this area but been away for so long. I’m not sure i’ll be able to venture alone when i’m back in Vietnam lol
Haha it’s actually not bad; it’s probably better than before if anything! Thanks for watching!

You helped the world discover the true heart of the people of Vietnam when you sat down at the roadside food vendor and everyone rallied around to eat alongside you. The locals seemed curious and immediately opened up to share food-eating preferences. Very cool!
Just to clarify, the gentlemen at the sugarcane stall said it's better to put your cash in many pockets. Balance the load so you don't lose your wad in one pick.

Chris, this has to be one of your best videos. The wife and myself loved seeing your visit to District 8 and how well you interacted with all of the people you came in contact with. You did a great job of explaining why all of us have to be careful using stereotype descriptions of poor parts of a town. As you said, most people are good and just trying to survive in their own ways. The wife and myself got a good chuckle out of your comment of how unsafe you felt while walking around in places like S.F. out here in CA....we agree totally with you. It's really sad, I love America, but it is not as safe as it use to be years ago and I don't know why. Oh, one more comment.....love how well you and Max work together on those joint videos....perfect match for both of you. Keep up the excellent video presentations. (you work well with Phuc Map too, ha)
Thanks so much for your comment! Glad you and your wife enjoyed this video. I also had a lot of fun making it!
Indeed it surprised me how unsafe I felt out in SF... 😂 First time there around Union Station I wanted to walk to Japan town at night and decided against it after all the weird people shouting and looking at me. Unfortunately I think development pushes a lot of people deeper into poverty and also causes more mental issues due to pressure of life, so you end up getting a more unsafe environment. That’s my guess at least, haha.
Glad you enjoy the videos with Max and Brandon (Phuc Map) too! Max will be coming up to the north to film videos with me for about 2 weeks so a lot more content with him will be coming!
Above all thanks for watching and stay safe!
