  • District 8 of Saigon is a place where no tourist goes as there is a reputation of it being a dangerous neighbourhood. That's exactly why I chose to head into this district, to see exactly what all the fuss it about.

Hi David. District 4 is now in the new construction phase. The small canal in your video is soon to be dredged and made two roads with trees along both sides of this canal. The street you are walking on was scheduled to be widen, laying underground cables with 6 car lanes. District 4 used to be a dangerous area about 25-30 years ago. If possible, after 1-2 years you come back and you will find District 4 more developed and completely different from now.

Imagine doing this in your own country… “You’ll never believe what I found after visiting the GHETTO… Normal, working people attempting to do their jobs while I shove a camera in their faces!”
    The entitlement 🙄

    • @davidkhai

Intriguing take. I’d argue the fact that content like this and similiar ones have helped countless communities and benefited many businesses as without it the mainstream media is the only message that is pushed.
And for this district you’ll find many articles portraying it as an area not to visit to this day, which is a shame.
All about perspective I’d say. Anyhow, thanks for sharing your thoughts, stay blessed

According to your comments, Australia is obviously not safe. I am from Saudi Arabia🇸🇦, here you can go to any square meter in the country wearing a golden rolex watch, with your pockets filled with cash, wiping your nose with Benjamin Franklin green bills if you wish😂, and still walk safely anytime anywhere. If you mistakenly drop something, people around you will alert you about it. I own a Chevrolet Camaro, when I switch it off, I leave the keys inside on the seats and shut the door, but leave it unlocked. I just hate the feeling of keys in my pocket. I have never had my car stolen or tampered with. I do the same with my house, the doors are open 24/7.. someone just need to push the door to open it, and never had anything stolen from me my entire life.. never ever. This what I call a safe country.

D8 is where my cousins aunts and uncle live from my mother’s side. Cho Rach Ong was where a cousin took my wife and I through to go shopping for groceries the first time I visited Vietnam in 2018. There’s a lady I always get my glasses from on Duong Ba Trac and there’s a Domino’s Pizza we always eat at. Heck on Saturdays we even go to church service so Q8 isn’t too bad, just super crowded and dirty by a westerner’s standards.

Way back in the '80 nowhere was actually safe in Saigon. I got my cheap new plastic sandals stolen right under my metal chair just minutes after letting them off for a more comfortable position inside a movie theater rạp Thanh Vân in quận 10. Got my roll of line worth less than a roll of bread for a kite snatched away inside a narrow street alleys when getting lost in the convoluted neighborhoods in quận 10. Never dare to wear a cap or hat or anything worth selling for a roll of plain bread during the very hard time.

Hi David, I just recently discovered your channel and the content is good and addicting. I'm really into travel content and honestly, you're pretty inspiring to me because you travel alone. I'm a pretty timid and small American guy and to be honest, I'm kind of scared to travel to places like Philippines and Vietnam alone. I've only traveled to Japan alone but thats pretty safe by most standards. I hope to learn more from you as I see more of your content. Really like that you interact with the locals. I'm sure its easier because you speak Vietnamese but still awesome to see.

I had the same mindeet before setting off on travelling alone, but once I started I found that people around the world are kind hearted, and nothing really to worry about.
Obviously you should stay cautious and not do stupid things as a solo traveller. Hope you travel more in future as it’s an amazing feeling. And places like Thailand and Vietnam are great places to start to build confidence in travelling.
      Thanks for messaging ❤️

The "hood" area in SG now is in western industrial parts of the city like Tan Binh, Binh Tan, Binh Chanh. District 4 and 8 are gentrified cause they are near the center. You wont see any gangs or violent crimes out in the open tho, just watch out for petty crimes.

28:00 lol that old lady isn't an original saigonese. She has a very clear miền tây accent. A migrator to saigon. I think she might even be khmer herself or khmer mixed. Marriages between vietnamese and khmer are looked down upon by vietnamese. But she's from the boonies where the societal norm isn't established there. And lmao at "Vietnam is very good". Shes the type that would have joined the VC.
