La Dispute's Wildlife is a fantastic and rewarding gauntlet of emotional rock music. Even if post-hardcore isn't in your comfort zone, this album is worth a shot.
What do you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

One thing that’s not mentioned here, I see this album as a kind of concept album. I know it’s not explicit but there’s two main themes running through it. The songs that start with ‘a’ are his own tragedy. Then there’s the tragedies of others, King Park, Edward Benz etc. These reach a crescendo in All our bruised bodies where he talks about all of those experiences together, including his own and compares his situation to the tragedies of the others. You and I in unison is like his Atonement.
I think this makes an already great album, groundbreaking.

This review was spot on. So many people are turned off by Dreyer's vocals but that determines whether you are in or out with this band. I wasn't the biggest fan of Wildlife but after my friend told me to sit down with all the lyrics in front of me and just read along, this album became a top 10 for me. It's a movie, a book, a play, and a CD all at the same time. This band is just incredible.

  • @EvilMike349

I would definitely give this record 10/10, but I would say I'm slightly biased considering they're one of my favorite bands. I really feel like what they did with Wildlife seemed pretty innovative (although, of course, I'm sure it's been done similarly before), and I feel like you don't fully understand that unless you listen to Wildlife's interview counterpart called Conversations. Conversations is basically Jordan Dreyer giving the story behind each and every song and how it fits into the narrator's story and why it's so significant. Listening to it really helped me find the love for Wildlife that I have now. This will forever be one of my favorite records of all time.

I'd give this one an 8 or light 9 if it were me, I love the band but I just see their previous and the album after this both having to be in that same 10 spot or at least around that as the music on this album I thought just was a minor step-down considering what they did with somewhere at the bottom... Plus I think I just was more provoked with the other two studio albums and even more so than not the split with Touche Amore was it I think, the album's kick ass tho

Takes perserverence as the caustic nature of Jordan's vocal approach is initially offputting, but once it clicks, the scale of the narrative and "the stories as an undercurrent" just gets better and better with every listen. This album has worked it's way through hundreds to make it to my favourite rock album from a currently releasing artist. Jordan sets a new precedent for modern lyricists, and as one, it taught me to buck the fuck up and aim higher. Also the "a" songs as asides are incredible

As a member of da wildlife community I approve of diss review.
I also suggest reviewing David Lynch's new "Crazy Clown Time" as a track review!

La Dispute is really the only important "post hardcore" band currently making music. Glad to know you liked the album, Anthony :)
    Hope you're well, bud.

Im glad you ended your description with King Park so people could enjoy they emotional shock it creates with the lyrics

"LEAST FAV TRACK: THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BITTER FRUIT"
Surely you jest, that's the best song on the album.
Also. King Park is in his favorites while Baptist Church isn't.
I wholeheartedly disagree with the end-score of this album.
It seems as though he only listened to it 1-3 times because on my fist 3 or 4 listens I disliked this album, but now it's one of my favorite's and I find something new everytime i listen to it. Have it on everyday for 2 years now , never gets boring. 10/10

Thank you. I've been having online classes for two years because of covid, but this is the first semester where classes returned to being presential. I take a 2 hour journey from my home to the uni, so I have a lot of "spare time" to watch series on the metro and listen to music on the bus. I've been making a "rule" to listen to at least an album a day during this tragetory, and yesterday my pick was this Las Dispute record. Fuck. Fuck fuck. I listened to the entire thing three more times today. Its the best, most heartbreaking experience I've had with music in awhile. When "Safer in the Forest" started playing I knew I was in love. But when King Park played. Fuck. I had to just get to a bench and pay attention. This is something else. This album prooves how lyricism is an art form and can make or break an album, or even elevate it as godlike status. Poetry + Good Delivery, this is what defines Wildlife.

Really good review. I agree with just about everything you said here, except you forgot to mention the song "All Our Bruised Bodies and the Whole Heart Shrinks". That song sort of stood out for me because its basically just him asking these questions like "have you ever suffered" or "Did they tell you how cruel the world can be" or something like that, and it feels like he's speaking to me. Anywhoo, great review keep them coming!

I was there on the stream where you listened to them and yeah I wasn't surpised you disliked it. I really enjoy them though but I was scared to listen to this. This genre is one I usually hate, the vocals just kill it for me every time, but La Dispute was a rare exception and I love their first album. It had a raw energy that was so invigorating and fresh. Usually this kind of music comes off as whiny and annoying but that album felt genuinely emotional. Glad to see you liked this though.

Life brought me back to this album, it’s unfortunately relatable now. Great take. But after coming back, It’s somehow harder. Solid 9.

@Zippingfrog from what i understand, somewhere at the bottom was the bands first official full-length. i know they've released eps before this, but is that what you're referring to?

@@makotoisthebestprotag1870 I dunno, ALLB had a lot more conviction and clarity to them. He might like them a lot more at least lyrically. There's a good bit of spoken word as well.
My guess is he'd put them like right in the middle between La Dispute and Dance Gavin Dance.

@Mithicus you mean post-hardcore hasn't changed thanks to bands like refused and at the drive in? i didn't mean that in a negative way if that's what you're assuming. stating a fact. things are different. pre-2000 and post-2000 post-hardcore is different in a lot of ways.
