Diana and Charles wage a media war. The monarchy's role is up for debate. Welcome to the '90s - and Queen Elizabeth II's biggest challenge to date. - Розваги
I loved Jonathan Pryce's performance as Philipp. I think he matched this season's Queen very well, and just like the previous actors, he gave the character a lot of life, of personality. He definetly is one of the reasons I enjoyed this season as much as I did. Thank you for bringing him to the show! He is simply a phenomenal actor, and ever since I first saw him as Gouvernor Swan in the POTC movies as a kid, I can not help but feel that little pang of delight when encoutering him in another role.
I absolutely love the cast of season 5. I just think the stories they were telling in season 5 weren't as compelling as in season 4. I'm looking forward to season 6.
I think Jonathan Pryce is a good actor, but to me, a better fit for a Prince Phillip at this stage of life would have been Charles Dance. I think they missed a trick by having him as Lord Mountbatten. He would have been really commanding as Prince Phillip.
I would have gone for Bill Nighy.
I don't know, @emmae8857 , he really did play Lord Mountbatten very, very well. Mountbatten was a man who exuded gravitas, and Charles Dance was one of the few I could really see doing that role justice.
Pryce has that bit of comedy and humor about him that fits Phillip a bit better, I think.
No way... Charles Dance has already and perfectly played Dicky...Lord Mountbatten's older version which was perfectly cast just like the Young version.. I'm sure there were other options that would have been fitting but even if Charles' Dance has hadn't been a part of The Crown before I think it would be unconvincing and a waste to see him do something that gives him too much screen time...he's the sort of actor who shines in iconic roles that every scene with him is important. As a series'regular after playing the mighty Tywin Lannister. I doubt wed want to see him do anything that is filler arcs. Unless it's a role written for him and is extraordinary. I'd rather see his witty lighthearted dry sense of humor in his interviews...
I agree, Charles Dance looked too fierce and serious for Lord Mountbatten, who had a bit of a tired/easy going facial expression in my view. However, he would look perfect as Philip just as you say.
He is phenomenal in Game of Thrones which is when I first became aware of him. He was one of the assets to the season 5 and 6 arcs because he was such a different kind of character that he conveyed so convincingly that a lot of people hated his guts yet his conviction towards his beliefs was unwavering and he got to play that part exactly how it should have been surpassing my expectations. Then learning he will be cast to play the late Prince Phillip was an odd choice considering Matt Smith will always own that role in our hearts. It took time to get used to Toby but with Pryce I was convinced from the first episode and adjusted very well to the transfer of the role being in capable hands
Jonathan Pryce is a wonderful actor but him as Prince Philip is a miscast. He didn't become Philip at all in the same way the rest of the cast embodied their roles. Princess Diana was uncannily spot on. With Prince Charles, I can recognize the effort even if he doesnt look like him and I can see how he drew from the source material and made it better than the original. However with Pryce, he seems like his old roles - not Philip at all. Prince Philp had a charming wit, debonaire cadence that the previous 2 actors captured wonderfully well. Pryce still seems like the High Sparrow in a suit. I agree with one of the comments below that Charles Dance would have been a better Prince Philip had he not already played Lord Mountbatten in previous seasons
Charles Dance already played Lord Mountbatten
@@Starburst858 yeah, I know. I was just thinking he would give more justice to portraying Prince Philip better than Pryce did
It wouldn't make any sense at all to have him come back and play Prince Phillip lol
Agree that Pryce is a miscast but disagree with the example of his role as the pope , he was more committed to that role than this one , even change his accent to do match somehow the Spanish accent of Francis I , here with Phillip I didn’t see the effort of capturing the mannerism or the way of speaking
@@victoriadesamotracia yeah, you're right
He was amazing as Philip
He's the most non-phillip they have cast so far.
He's my favourite of this season!!!
Does anyone remember him playing Elliot Carver the Bond villain in Tomorrow Never Dies 1997? I love that character
I do, he was a great Bond villain
@@theseageek indeed ☺️
@@izzat_izzudin7287 people back then called him ridiculous as a villain who wanted to control the world with fake news, but look at the world today… 👀👀 not so ridiculous now is it?
@@theseageek SPOT ON. It's more relevant now then ever
Of course! He was a great villain. Also as Mr dark in "something wicked this way comes"
I couldn’t imagine a better actor to play Season 5 and 6 Prince Phillip
Jonathan Pryce did a really good job playing Prince Philip.
Fun fact this is the second Netflix project Jonathan Pryce was involved. The first he was in was the Netflix film The Two Popes.
no, he did not
How’s that a fun fact? Think most people know it seeing as how 2 popes was 2019. It even talks about it in this video. Z level comment
I saw Pryce as Shylock at the Liverpool Playhouse. He was amazing. 👏
I thought his was the standout performance of the season. I loved every scene he had.
Served him a flat white and a ham & cheese croissant at the cafe I work in.
Nice
Have they introduced Jimmy Saville yet into the storyline? He was Charles very good friend, some say best friend.
I’d be surprised if they even mention him
When you don't change anything about your look, voice or acting, it's hard to see him as anybody but the actor and not the character. Either of the previous Philips or an unknown actor would have been better.
Absolutely agreed! He doesn't look, sound, move, or act like Philip at all. He might as well just be himself, or a different character. The way Tobias Menzies developed Philip further after Matt, adding something without contradicting the younger Philip was the right way to go. Then again, Season 5 has made many mistakes, if you ask me.
He was so good in The Two Popes.
I think they should have cast Larry Lamb as Mountbatten in seasons 3 and 4, and then cast Charles Dance as Prince Philip in seasons 5 and 6.
Zarniwoop is doing extremely well these days
I cannot and would never criticise his performance as an actor. He's superb. BUT....HORRIBLE choice for the late Duke of Edinburgh. Looks absolutely nothing like him. He'd be a fine Stan Laurel though.
Pls share the "playing camilla"
this season hasn’t been the best with casting or stories: the embellished history was what made it so great but that’s all lost in favour of the royal divorce and the draining fallout
Short answer: He didn't!
Por favor traducir al castellano. Gracias
Most of the family were badly cast apart from Diana.
I agree. Although the actress playing diana seemed too skinny.
Agree
While there's many comments about a miscast here, I think I will state that I think the biggest miscast of all in the entire show that's always overlooked is Jared Harris as George VI.
He was very physically miscast. But I thought he portrayed the gentleness of George vi and how much her loved and was beloved by his family.
He’s obviously a good actor but didn’t even try to talk like or capture Prince Phillip. He also has none of his cheekiness. He just played this part like he plays everything else. That’s why the newer seasons of The Crown haven’t been as strong. They’ve cast established stars for too many of the parts whereas the first few series the actors were cast on how close they were to the character they were playing.
JP is an excellent actor, but he was a horrible miscast. No wit, charm or sarcasm like Tobias Menzies and Matt Smith had when they played Prince Philip.
Good actor - especially in Thrones - but not the right fit for Phillip imo.
What lovely, thoughtful man, and amazing actor.
SADLY, Philip unfortunately isn't the great man he portrayed. if his sister didn't die in that plane crash, and if his COUSIN, Elizabeth didn't want to marry him, he absolutely would have been goose stepping in the Third Reich. He's not a sympathetic character.
Maester Luwin really climbed the ladder huhh 👀👌
Honey, he didn't play Maester Luwin. He played the High Sparrow.
I think he gave a compelling and nuanced performance but I got no Phillip from him whatsoever. Apart from holding his hands behind his back I didn't hear or see any characterisation. All the actors always talk about not doing an impersonation but getting the essence of the person, well unfortunately I think Pryce took that too far and ended up doing nothing.
I still don't understand why didn't they cast James Cromwell as Prince Philip. Is it because he already played the part in the film The Queen?
Philip was a tall, lanky guy. I love Jonathan as an actor but I don’t see him pulling off this role.
He didn't
Who is Imelda?
The actress who played this season's queen.
@@Ella.L. oh thank you! I’m behind so I was confused:)
@@ashleyelizabeth8335 😊👍🏻
He seems to be too "old" to this role and lacks energy and looks like an old priest... The two younger actors in previous seasons seem to be better fit for their respective "Philip" roles.
What do you mean by too old? Because Philip was in his 70s during the 1990s, so he should not be too energetic or youthfully played either
"...lacks energy and looks like an old priest"
so....perfect for the role then?
I have never been impressed by a Jonathon Pryce performance. I feel that he always just plays himself in every movie. The british nicholas cage in my opinion. The casting for all other characters was EXCELLENT in my though.
Maybe it's because his portrayal of Pope Francis--also in a Netflix production, right?--is burned into my brain. Having a hard time seeing him in this role.
He was not as good as the previous actors. I'm not believing him in this role.
Jonathan Pryce is a great actor. However he was badly miss cast as Prince Philip. The vast majority of the cast didn't fit the characters they were supposed to be. This season was the worst there has been. Please don't bring it back.
I have to agree. Matt Smith and Tobias Menzies did such a good job and it's a shame.
don't be too harsh. The younger versions of Prince Philip were so far away from our life so there are more room for creativity.
Couldn’t agree more. Season 5 is awful. 1-4 were great.
Elizabeth debicki was great though I think
Charles Dance would have been a better Prince Philip, IMO.
He was literally the worst part of the show and put in the least effort out of the entire cast. His two predecessors were very Phillip, he has the suit but none of the personality. Disappointing.
True. And it irritates me seeing him on every episode. He’s the high sparrow but not the prince.
He isn't a good actor
He is but the scrip didn’t help him either , no one in the cast , blame Peter Morgan
Is he secretly Charlie dance
Jonathon Pryce didn't play anything but Jonathon Pryce in The Crown. TERRIBLE casting choice.
He was useless
