I live in Northern California, I love hosta its actually my favorite plant ,I want to know do they only grow on the east coast?when I go back east they are everywhere I see them all over New York ,I have tried growing them for years they usually die I really want to add them into my landscape they just don't grow for me.any suggestions.
Good morning, Dee Dee, and you asked a good question. Hostas do grow anywhere in the country where there is a winter with freezing temperatures. I can grow them here in Colorado, although they don't tend to grow as large as in the East or Midwest since we are so dry and have a short growing season. I lived in Monterey for awhile and if I remember correctly, it did not freeze in the winter. All hostas thrive when subjected to freezing or near freezing temperatures during their dormant phase. That dormancy actually helps them return more strongly. I hope this helps to explain why you are having problems growing hostas in northern California.

So far deer haven't touched my hostas but I'm afraid someday they will find them! We have the perfect climate here - rain or heavy dew every night. The hosta does real well here. I have been using Milorganite for years in my yard with great results. Hostas love it. I have a deer problem in my yard so I spray them monthly with Bobbex. The deer won’t touch hostas treated with it. Spray it right on the leaves on cool evenings.
Hello, Joe and thank you for the tip about Bobbex. ❤️ I had not heard of it before but I actually don’t have a deer problem where I live. I have sun in my garden until around 1pm then it’s full sun and then evening shade which is the best hostas to plant in my front yard 🌺

If you have a Home Depot you can buy milorganite for $15.

@@robertkattner1997, here is an explanation about how it is produced: No. It’s been a common misconception that Milorganite is “poop in a bag.” Milorganite is composed of microbes that have eaten well, died, and been dried. Microbes eat the organic material found in wastewater, die when they have nothing else to eat, and are heat-dried in dryers that operate at 900-1200°F which heats the Milorganite to an internal temperature of 176°F. Milorganite complies with all applicable federal and state requirements. It’s safe to use throughout your yard and garden when used as directed. And here is more info about the definition of organic fertilizers: Fertilizer derived from organic sources are composed of nutrients from living things or their byproducts, such as microbes, animal waste, plants, and other similar natural materials. It’s “slow food” for plants. Organically derived fertilizers feed plants slowly over a longer period of time and help build soil structure. Organically derived fertilizers contain no chemical salts,which can burn plants.

Been obsessed with hostas, my favourite are the blue ones with the yellow variegated outline, classic blue is great also, I like the white ones also but I heard they grow really slow

Good morning and thank you for the excellent question. ❤️ Hostas do need a winter dormant period to thrive. Continue watering in the Fall until the first hard freeze. After that you can cut away the dead brown leaves. Also covering the roots with a layer of mulch can protect the plant from temperature fluctuations. Hi, Jim, and great question, I did address that at the end of the video. I apply Milorganite with the little hosta fingers first start appearing in the spring. Then I reapply as a top dressing when the leaves have unfurled. After that I use the Miracle Grow Tomato Food throughout the summer about every 2-3 weeks.

Regarding your comment about magnesium, have you tried Epsom salt, magnesium sulfate sprinkled around the plants?
No, I have not, Jim. I sort of enjoy applying the tomato food, it is one of those habits for taking care of my plants that is part of summer for me. 🌞
I submerge the whole pot into the bucket. I hold it down until it is saturated and then I take it out. This keeps more dirt on the plant and less in the bucket. It comes out of the pot much easier.

Hello, Gloria, and thank you for your question. ❤️ I believe you are talking about my Virginia Creeper. If you live in a dry climate like me with long winters, this is an easy and fantastic vine to grow. However, especially if you live in the South like when I lived in Virginia, it can be invasive and hard to control. Do you have any other questions? Mainly it depends on where you live. But it is easy to pull out young plants and cut the vines back each Spring. Happy gardening, Mary 👒🌸🌿
Where are you filming from? I live in Daphne AL and the summers are quite hot and humid for about 4-5 months! Can hostas take that long duration of heat? Please respond.
Diane, hello, and I live at high altitude in Colorado. 💞 We are very dry, so I must water very often. As far as your summer heat goes, I would say yes, you can grow hostas but make sure they are in full shade and do not dry out. They love water! I have a friend who gardens in the south and she has many hostas, they just may not grow quite as large. Good luck! 🌿🌱🍃
Mary I have tiger lilies in part morning sun and then going into complete shade. I’m thinking of transplanting them as I can’t get a uniform height because of the sun exposure. So I want to go ahead with a hasta garden using a Sun and Substance in the sunnier corner and more shade tolerant ones in the other area. But Inwould like some color in the background such as fuscia
Good morning, Stan, and thank you for the question. 😍 Sum and Substance will be gorgeous and it is a Hosta that does grow huge. When you buy hostas for the shadier section of your bed be sure to check the tags for mature size. Hosta varieties range from tiny to huge at maturity, so you will want to buy those ones that grow larger. I do not know of any shade perennials with fuschia colored flowers that grow taller than the hostas will for a background. An alternative could be to plant annual impatiens in front of your hostas. They come in bright pink flowers as you know. What I am trying this spring to add pink to my shade gardens is planting caladium bulbs which can have that bright pink in their leaves. Veronica, sure! Most of what you can see in the video is either Creeping Thyme or Creeping Veronica. Both actually bloom in the spring with tiny flowers. They do well with foot traffic. I also have some low growing succulents on the edges of my flagstones. Thanks for stopping by my channel. 😀

I'm a bonafide hostaholic. I love them. I use milorganite as well applied at the drip line in spring as they are emerging. I have never used it in the planting hole. I also use liquid kelp in a hose-end sprayer usually once in June. Apply in the early evening after the heat of the sun is done. It helps them recover from the hail damage.
I don't think hostas need too much water. Sure, they will probably grow larger with more water. But I have hostas all along the north side of my house where they get no irrigation whatsoever. They are dependent upon rain and the occasional hose watering and they look great.
Kyra, so happy to find a fellow Hosta lover. 😀 Do you live in an arid climate like me? Our past years have been very dry and here we must irrigate or really nothing much grows. That is why I was emphasizing watering in the Mountain West. But you are right, lots of water allows hostas to grow to their full potential.
I love this tip about liquid kelp! Thanks so much for sharing it because we actually just had some bad hail and several of my hostas were shredded. 😰 Fortunately, some of them were protected by the trees they are under, so not all were ruined. Wishing you all the best with your babies! 💞
@@RockyMountainGardens Yes I live in the same arid climate just outside of Denver. Hostas are incredibly hardy. They can survive with less water than one would think. They can be part of a water-wise garden. I don't think they much care for the intensity of our sun though! You need to explore some mini hostas for your fairy gardens! Minis are my favorite. Oh who am I kidding? I love them all. But I do have a special love for minis.
Kyra, you are so right about them being hardy. I believe most hostas can make it in zone 3, which is great for us. Our sun is so strong, like you said, but some of the thicker leafed varieties can take a little more sun. The tiny hostas sound fascinating. 💞 I think I may have one in my garden already, since it has stayed so small after 3 years. I do not know the variety, however. Thanks for all the information! 😀
Instead of the Miracle Grow you can cut to the chase and use Epsom salts for the magnesium kick. Plant directions are on the bag.
Thank you for that tip, Mair, I appreciate the fact that epsom salts are more of an organic treatment in the garden. The one advantage of Miracle Grow is that it can be watered over the hosta leaves for foliar feeding. Is that possible with the epsom salts too? Happy Spring, Mary 🌸🍃🌷

Jan, hello, and I am so glad you stopped by. 😀 I have Kentucky Blue Grass, but not very much at all. I have turned all my shady areas into gardens with shade loving plants like hostas, pulmonarias, coral bells, Solomon’s Seal and so on. Very pretty and no mowing. 🌸🌿🦋
Can I plant hosta in the part of my yard that stays really wet?
If your yard has standing water where it is like a bog, hostas will not do well. They do like the soil to be consistently moist but it must be able to drain without the plants standing in large puddle-like conditions. 💞 Hope that helps. 😀
What is that amazing beautiful tree, with the cinnamon brown bark behind you?
I am so sorry to say I do not know exactly. It was in my yard when I bought my house and was a small bush. I transplanted it to this spot and it has grown so much. A master gardener confirmed that it is a type of pine, but she was not sure of the variety either, and it has remained a bush shape. Wish I could be more specific. 🌲🌲🌲

Are you keeping it in the shade? Hostas must be in shade and do like their soil to be moist, but not sitting in a puddle of water. If you answer some of my questions here, I can probably help more. Thank you for the question, Rosemary. ❤️ Here are some names of small sized hostas that you can look for when plant shopping: Marrakech, Baby Buntig, Blue Mouse Ears, Blueberry Tart, Little Treasure. Rachel, hi, and yes what I do is when the first Hosta fingers show, I sprinkle Milorganite around them and water it in. Later when the leaves unfurl I sprinkle on more around the plant and water in again. Good look with your hostas and have a blessed day. 💞

Good morning, Brandon, and thanks for your question. ❤️ Hostas do need a dormancy period during the winter to continue growing. That means around 40 days of temperatures below 40°. If you can provide that in a cold garage during the winter then you can bring them back into your house afterwards for them to start regrowing. Hope that helps! 🦋🌿🐝

For 20 years had 2 host as side by side but last year and this year only 1 came up the one that didn’t only 3 small shoots
I am so sorry to hear about your hostas. 😢 Like all living things, even hostas can die. One reason could be a lack of nutrients in the soil, if they have never had fertilizer or compost added over the years. As you saw in my video, I add milorganite each spring and also top dress with composted steer manure. For your remaining hosta do try some nutrients and water to keep it moist. Good morning! 💞 I have not used hostas as houseplants myself, but I did some research for you. Accordingly, yes they can be planted in pots and kept indoors. However, hostas do like having a dormant, cool time during the winter. So it is advised that during the winter you provide what they would have outdoors, in other words, they need at least 6 weeks of temperatures below 42°F in the winter to go into and stay in dormancy. Depending on your climate, you can over-winter them in your garage, outdoors, or even in your refrigerator. Hope this helps! 🌱🌿🍃

🪳🐛🐌Good morning, Kathy, and there are actually several pests which could be causing the holes in your hostas. If you live in a damp, wet climate it could be slugs. One way to catch them is to put out small lids with beer in them to attract them. They will crawl in the lid and drown. Also clear away any leaf debris around your hostas, the slugs and other bugs like to hide under them. If it is some type of insect you can try spraying the leaf tops and undersides with neem oil or insecticidal soap, both of which are not dangerous chemicals. Hope these tips help you, Kathy. Hello....you seem so sweet...I also love hostas....I had an acreage and planted many hostas...all kinds...then we moved in town and just started a small hosta garden under a king maple....do you think the tree roots will interfere with the hostas? Oh, and Milorganite fertilizer has been used for many years on yards and plants...it it a very gentle fertilizer...This year I used Osmocote on my plants...again it is very gentle and you use just a few gradualness per plant. Yameka Fields some can take sun better than others. Generally they do best in dappled shade or morning sun with no hot afternoon sun. Varieties that are light colored will NOT do well in sun. Enjoy!
Hi, Yameka, hostas with white colors on their leaves or thin leaves will be easily burnt in full sun. Also, blue leafed hostas do better in shade. Most hostas can take at least a little sun, like morning sun or dappled shade. One of the best for tolerating more sun is called Sum and Substance, which can grow huge and has a pretty chartreuse color, it is fantastic.
Yameka Fields I've found that the blue/gray hostas with thick leaves do well with sun as well as Sum & Substance. As long as they aren't baking in hot/dry ground. Even in south facing with shade from another plant, small tree, or shrub.

Hi Mary, could you give some pointers on planting potted plants and the kind that would be best in full afternoon sun? I live in Eastern NY and live in a condo. I really need plants that are potted, I don't have much space except a small area near my garage and front door.
Cindy, if you have a strong afternoon sun and love color there are lots of choices. I love a plant called Spike to give height to the center or back of a container. For trailing plants any of the Sweet Potato vines are fantastic, they come in dark burgundies to chartreuse colors. I also like Licorice vines. Then, for flower color petunias, verbenas and calibrachoas, marguerite daisies, euphorbias are some of my favorites. If you can find them, I like the brand Proven Winners. One of my favorite things to do in a large pot is to add a trellis and plant a Black-eyed Susan vine there to grow up the trellis-just beautiful! I will show you mine in an upcoming video. Hello, Barbara, and thank you for the question. ❤️ Fortunately I have not had to deal with either of these critters in my garden. But my research tells me that voles are most likely the culprits. To deter them from chewing on the stems and roots of your hostas you can try natural remedies like garlic spray, castor oil, or predator urine. These can be sprayed directly onto the leaves, stems or soil around them to keep the voles from feeding on them. If that doesn’t work you can try a barrier like 1/4” chicken wire buried at least 6 inches deep into the ground to keep voles out of garden beds. It is crucial to ensure that the fencing is tall enough so that voles cannot jump over it. If you have a specific hosta garden space, you can dig it in the soil surrounding your garden. Microbes eat the organic material found in wastewater, die when they have nothing else to eat, and are heat-dried in dryers that operate at 900-1200°F which heats the Milorganite to an internal temperature of 176°F. Milorganite complies with all applicable federal and state requirements. It’s safe to use throughout your yard and garden when used as directed. And here is more info about the definition of organic fertilizers: Fertilizer derived from organic sources are composed of nutrients from living things or their byproducts, such as microbes, animal waste, plants, and other similar natural materials. It’s “slow food” for plants. Organically derived fertilizers feed plants slowly over a longer period of time and help build soil structure. I was wise to click on your video. I went to the go to guy at my local nursery,, he told me that Hostas are totally maintenance free. Just throw it in the ground, and enjoy. Never mentioning water, loosening of roots, or any food at all. I have been so disappointed for the last 2 years and now know why. I framed my focal point in my front garden and they look lost with my Double Rose of Sharon behind it. Hi, Susanna, and thanks for your question. 💞 Yes, hostas can be grown indoors but will need a little extra care. Be sure to look at the mature size on the hosta’s tag to get a smaller variety. They do require consistent moisture and fertilizing during the growing season and should be placed in an area with bright indirect sunlight. During winter they need a dormancy period, just as if they are planted outdoors. So place them in a dark, cool room and water only once a month. Hi, Debbie, I do not have trouble with slugs and snails since I live in an arid climate. 🐌 One treatment is to use diamotaceous earth, but this can harm your earthworms and other beneficial creatures. For safer, organic methods you can try these: Create a beer trap by burying half a container near vulnerable plants and half filling it with beer. The scent of the beer will lure slugs, which then fall in and get stuck and you can dispose of them. Or since they are soft-bodied molluscs, sharp, prickly barriers are a great way to deter them from your plants. Use crushed egg shells, pine needles or thorny cuttings to create barriers to keep the away from your hostas. Good luck and I really think these methods will work for you. ❤️

I totally understand, Colorado is not the easiest place to garden. I have 3 videos on this issue that might help you. Most important, be patient, hostas can take 3-5 years to reach their mature size. MOUMITA, some hosta flowers actually are quite fragrant, you can usually tell by the name like Heaven Scent or Fragrant Blue. If the scents are a problem for you, you can just cut off the flower stalk before it blooms. Many gardeners do that since they grow hostas just for the foliage.

You set the poor hosta's bare roots right on the Milorganite. You should have worked the fertilizer in with your hand cultivator and sprinkled some soil or compost over the fertilizer, and then put your hosta in. You probably burned the roots. It's never good for roots to touch fertilizer. Thanks for the tip on Milorganite smelling like humans. I have a bad rabbit problem myself. I try to stick with fertilizers that build my soil, bur discouraging rabbits would be a good reason to use it.
V Gil, good morning and certainly cultivating the milorganite in would not hurt. 💞 But because this is a completely organic fertilizer, not chemical, it will not burn roots. They break down very slowly over time and add nutrients to the soil. They feed the soil and then the soil feeds the plants. 😀 Happy Spring. 🌷🦋🌷
Can hosta grow in the Philippines?
Hi, Jasmin, and I am sorry but growing hostas in the Philippines would be difficult. You are in zone 10 and hostas can only take heat up to zone 9. They also require a dormancy period of a couple months of temps down to freezing. Rocky Mountain Gardens I was so enamored with that plant that I completely forgot what I was going to ask you! I have a hosta that stopped emerging, It’s about a 1/3 of it’s normal size. The leaves are healthy. Although many of them are still curled up. Any idea of what may have gone wrong?
Muckbucket, the most common cause for hostas returning smaller is that the plant did not receive enough water the summer before. Sounds strange, but because plenty of water is so essential for Hosta growth, not enough moisture will affect growth the following season. Do you think this is possibly a problem for your hostas?
Rocky Mountain Gardens I have 5 hosta plants and they all get the same mount of water. We did get less rain last summer yet the other 4 are fine.

My hosta leaves turning yellow... I need help...
Kristine, hello, one of the main reasons Hosta leaves turn yellow and then get brown scorching on the edges is that the plant is getting too much sun. The easy solution is to dig them up and move them to a shadier place using the method for planting that I showed in this video. 💞 The other reason this can happen is the plant may have petiole rot, caused by a fungus. The symptoms are yellowing and browning of the lower leaf margins. If you see brown, mushy decay and white fungal threads or fungal structures like mustard seeds at the base of the petiole, then your plant probably has this disease. There is no cure. You should remove the plant and replace the soil too, to stop any reinfections. Hope this helps. 🌱🌿🍃
