That about knocked me right off the kayak | Beautiful day kayak fishing Hawaii | Catch clean cook

- In this video a couple of friends and I head out in an area that is normally inacessible due to the trade winds. It proved to be very difficult to catch bait, but I got lucky and picked up 3. I wasn't paying attention and my first bait was stolen as I slow trolled out to deep drop. This was my actual first deep drop in 600 feet but it didn't produce fast enough and I headed back into the ledge (200ft) to focus on live baiting. After around 30 minutes of trying all the tricks I managed to hook up to a small yellowfin tuna. I brought him in doing what I normally do (taking way to must time filming) and after seeing the hook down inside it mouth I figured I could get away with shooting some underwater pictures. Right as I was switching the go pro over the yellowfin popped off and swam away cleanly. I was a little bummed but he swam away to fight another day. With only one live bait remaining I put it out in the hopes of getting a mahi mahi, my friend wade had caught one and lost another earlier in the morning. Not long after I brought my Iive bait back in and focused on bottom fishing. After catching a fair amount of small trigger fish I hooked into some thing fighting really hard. It was completely bending over my jigging rod and I had no idea what it was. I wrenched it up and a huge queen trigger fish popped up next to the kayak. I had heard that they were good to eat and after checking that there was no regulation on them I decided to keep it. After that I caught a pretty big table boss also known as a Hawaiian hogfish. I didn't feel like keeping him so I let him go thinking he wouldn't taste very good. Come to find out more recently they actually taste pretty good. The bottom fishing action was slowing down and I put my rig 10 feet off the bottom and stuck rod in the rod holder. A few minutes later out of seemingly no where the pole bent over hard with something ripping drag. This was before I got the camera on and a legitimately almost got knocked off my kayak. It took me a bit to even get the rod out of the holder because the fish was pulling so hard. Fast forward 20 minutes later I had wrenched what I suspected to the surface. The 5ft sandbar shark was planning dead until right by the kayak and then it took off at full speed and my line snapped as it touched the handle of my kage. My other friends had tuned in a few hours earlier, but wade and I were still having fun and we changed to vertical jigging. We ended up having a great session catching several GT each, but it was high lighted by wade trying to read the rating of his pole while fighting a big fish. I stuck that clip at the very end of the video with his permission. Right before heading in some dude came right up to us asking if there were fish here or where the wave buoy was and if we had caught anything. We kind of laughed it off trying not to be mean, but don't be that guy. I attempted to film a catch clean cook but some of the footage was corrupted so it is kind of incomplete. It was one of the best days I've had kayak fishing in Hawaii, I will remember it for a very long time.

Loved the variety of fishing methods and fish caught on this video!
The quality of your videos are really really good. What most amazes me is how comfortable you are on the kayak especially during the fight and dealing with so many moving objects is really impressive. Great job man. I hope one day I can fish with you!!
Thanks dude 🤙
Love the channel awesome videos
Thanks so much!
I always appreciate how versatile you are with your fishing and Filming/editing!
Thanks bro. I don’t know that it always comes through but I am seriously still trying to figure out how to edit 😂.
love this channel, love this video, love those fish
Trigger fish is one of my favorite 🤙🏽
What kind of triggerfish do you like to eat? How are you doing in these times bro?
Flying Fish TV grey trigger fish is what we target here in Florida. I’m doing pretty good still working and family is safe couldn’t ask for more. Beside open up the beaches so I can make it offshore 😂. Hope all is well over there brother 🤙🏽
Things are good, wife and I are still working and life is basically normal for the family. My wife is a ICU doctor and she thinks she will get covid, I might have to take Charlie and go camping to let her self quarantine. They closed the beach parks and the parking here, you can still go into the water but there is no access. I’m a fishing addict, I’ll find a way to get my fix.
Flying Fish TV you and me both. I’ll will always find a way. Y’all stay safe out there.
Had a great day out the water today in dana point , skunk’d but still. Outta nowhere , 2 weird razor sharp waves walked toward from 80yards . They came quick. I hovered over the first one then then second one rocked me . Took on water in 50 feet . Nothing around me. Think it was dolphins are random rip tide coming but man, that was crazy and peculiar. I don’t get shook mentally often, but that quick little occurrence keeps me on the alert
Another great vid. You do excellent work.
Thanks Nick!
Thanks for the great content brother!!!! 👍👊
Hawaiian Sleigh Ride!!! Epic.man!Looks like you got arm day in on the workout!lol
Right about after that shark I was feeling it. The real slay ride is hooking a hammer head. In one of the next few videos I get towed out to sea
@@FlyingFish_TV Hammers are a. Blast. I have a. Video from Florida with a big one! lots of tricks on those bad boys!
@@FlyingFish_TV15 footer is epic! POWER!!!!!! the one I had was only about 10ft and was all I could handle Lol!
That pole was so bent. Great 👍🏼 video bro
pugot burnt skin on the fire. Of all the colored bottom fish my papa would give away all but pugot. Exceptional day out, thanx for sharing
Cook it on the half shell, I've been meaning to try that.
It's amazing how that line didn't break lol
Impossible to break when you hook a shark, but will snap under a decent size yellowfin.
ADORO SEUS VÍDEOS, LIKE EDMILSON DO BRASIL...
Hey nice video bro!
We catch lots of trigger fish here in Baja, Mexico
Mostly with prepare "ceviche", they are really good that way, also fried with butter and seasoned with some garlic salt and black pepper tastes great.
Greeting from Baja Mexico!
Thx for the Video and nice fish 🤙
Thanks bro. It was a really fun day, the jigging at the end really put it over the top.
Nice day on the water bro. Great video as always.
Thanks Raf. How is the fishing in DC so far?
@@FlyingFish_TV Rhode Island...not DC. Not as exhilarating as the Pacific but pretty good. Miss those waters though. Keep killing it.
I give you big props! 👊 I always wanted to get a kayak until I found out one of the biggest great whites on record has been hanging out around Hawaii 🤪 love the vids🤙🏽
You should worry more about getting in a car wreck driving to the water. Although you do have to accept that far more sharks are going to check you out than you see.
I've had many encounters spearfishing on Oahu. One year we were on the North shore at a spot before waimea bay and my buddy got bit in the arm by a small tiger. That was a gnarly experience for us, we made a turniqet out of one of our wetsuits and swam my buddy towards shore while the shark circled and followed us into shore. My buddy live to dive another day Wich he did after recovering and that was another heavy experience for him to do that, and he knows it was a mistaken identy.
Fuuuuck. Glad he is okay
@@FlyingFish_TV ya I live in wasilla Alaska now, so if you wanna barter some salmon for some Ahi let me know😁👍🤙🏽
Wen I watch videos like this and I see dislikes it piss me off, you either have to be extremely jealous of he"s life stile or a hatter, if you don't do or enjoy this type of fishing stay off... Great video btw, I'm dying to fish your waters one day...
Where are you from? What is that piace? Amazing! I love your videos💪🏽
Those fish are good eating, perfect on the grill
It was good. Nice white meat. How are you doing Eddie? Are you getting out this week?
@@FlyingFish_TV doing go bro, I took my son last week Saturday and he got his first mahimahi. I try bottom fish too on that day and no luck.
Saturday I'll go out again
Nice going. Good luck on saturday, what are you going for?
@@FlyingFish_TV trying to get the monkey of my back, ahi. Troll to the point early morning time and if the weather is good I'll try do some bottom at the point and troll back in evening time, that's the plan. Hopefully the weather is good. How about you, wen is the next time u going out? That shark video was epic, my son says that guy get some olo's, lol.
That's funny that dude paddled up to you guys asking if there was any fish there🤣 maybe...
Lmao I’ve heard some bad things about that guy, another friend confirmed he is known for trying to get close to figure out what you are doing.
That was fun to watch. You don't need to go too work out after that 👍
Kayak is fish powered.
New meaning to going green.
Lol wish I could get pulled out to the marlin fishing grounds.
15:30 que the dramatic music for old man and the sea.
Lol. I’m just using the copyright free music from UA-cam.
amazing
Love the content brother
Thanks Vinny. I’ll try to keep them coming as regularly as I can. I have about a year of weekly videos to edit...
Could you make a video going over your setup and estimated cost? :)
Ill try to do that In the next couple weeks. I am still working full time so I don’t really have much more time than normal.
That is a great idea!
What Lb braid are you using like 30, 40
How do you stay so calm around sharks all the time especially in a kayak. Love your channel.
If you panic u die
I’ve been around so many that I don’t think they want to mess with me. Mostly they just want your fish or your bait. In 3 or so videos from now I’ll have 9 big sandbar sharks come up as I’m reeling in a fish, that was scary.
Do you fish from a Revo 13? I like your channel.
Nice rig, great fish too! Get yourself a clip on speaker mic!
Great video! And the channel is excellent! Did you consider putting amas on your yak?
I’ve considered it, but for the most part I don’t like them. For instance if one breaks off in rough weather then you are guaranteed to flip. The one time I would use them is with hobie sail. I like the sleek fast nature of the revo, you know minus pulling the bait tube 😂. I’ve got a new outback too, I’ll probably get a hobie live well for that one and then I can do marlin trips without the drag of the bait tube.
@@FlyingFish_TV Very interesting and rather ironic! The attachment arms on the amas are quite fragile and I see your point. It seems with the Revo and the Outback you have the best of both worlds. i am avidly seeking an Outback as we speak but everything is on back-order; that yak ticks all my boxes so hopefully Windward or the Maui shop will get some in soon...we shall see...
Trigger fish are delicious on ceviche, enjoy it!!!
Nice. What kind of trigger fish do you use?
@@FlyingFish_TV ua-cam.com/video/rA3wvL7Sj-I/v-deo.html
@@FlyingFish_TV in La Paz, BCS, Mexico call it cochito, its the same trigger when you find to last day
Another nice video, I knew that you did not hook up an onaga on that drop.... I was guessing either a big Kohala or a grinner, either way a lot of work. Let us know what you thought of the trigger fish, it looked good.
Oh yeah, I knew it was a shark from the second it hit. Its going to be a long time before I catch an onaga on video, I haven't even got one yet and I have a year of videos filmed. The trigger fish was really good, hard to go wrong with nice white meat.
Great vid! Do you keep your paddle in the hatch?...always torn about leaving it behind...always worry my drive has an issue and then I can’t paddle back...I would also prefer to put the cage gaff in its place. Please keep the vids coming!
I take a half paddle with a T handle and put it in my front hatch. With some practice it comes in and out fairly easy. I have had several drive failures luckily not super far out and used my paddle to get in.
Nice 🤙🏼
Nice video really enjoyed this. Do you guys worry at all about ciguatera on eating bottom fish there?
I don’t worry about it too much, but I rarely keep reef fish. If I do keep a trevally I will keep a smaller one. The other main species that I keep are job fish, but I’ve never had a problem with them. I mostly catch job fish that are less than 10 lbs. Roy or blue spotted peacock grouper an introduced species here are know for having ciguatera. I’ve only ever caught 1 and I didn’t eat it. Some people will keep the really big trevally and I’ve heard they can have cig, but I don’t personally know anyone who has had it.
Cool video just subbed was wondering what type of light is your safety light
Thanks James. I made the safety light using a lantern flash light and mounted it to my diy rod holders using PVC pipe.
have u tried the pelican kayaks the 130 or know any guys who use them in Hawaii. are they as good on open water as the hobies ?!?!
Love the GoPro condom on your hat lol 😂
Lol
Hey bro. Awesome footage as always glad to see your back. Is this old footage or recent like during this quarantine. We've been trying to find somewhere to launch but dont wanna get the cars towed.
This was filmed around a year ago. I’m just editing to present. It’s difficult to find a spot, but I don’t know anyone who has actually got a parking ticket.
@@FlyingFish_TV I gotcha, yep it seems the parking is the issue. A couple guys had warnings of getting their vehicles towed. Crazy times.
Some of the boat launches are open from what I hear
How did the trigger fish taste? I see those deep sea ones often spearfishing and heard they were good eating, but never shot one. Keep up the awesome vids.
That specific species of queen triggerfish was really good, just really tough skin.
Ahhh, I'm Sorry To Say Butt That Wasn't A Monster Trigger, Maybe For In Hawaii? Butt I've Caught Triggers 2+' Square & 3-4" Thick In Los Cabo, As Big As Double Size Of That Big GT You Caught!!! They're Great Eating Fresh Butt Not Frozen... Thanks
Monster for me. Holy crap that is a huge trigger!
20:50 look how that rod is bending and not even giving in, I didn't knew you needed a lot of force to break a rod
I’ve done plenty of stuff to break a rod, but haven’t managed though. I bought the ugly stiks because I heard they were really tough. As long as the rod isn’t damaged and you don’t high stick you should be fine.
I've tried your links for the kayak and accesories and some of the others and they don't work for me. What size and brand is that fish finder? It looks huge. Is that a Revo?
Wanted to see how much stock you put into the major/minor bite times? I don’t feel right not being on the water before sunrise
I always try to fish the bite times. I did it for all of 2019 trying to fish the bite times that coincided with sunrise. Major bite time is on the incoming tide and minor on the outgoing tide. I try to shoot for the minor, but fish starting before the outgoing tide for the best action. I caught 90 pelagic fish in 2019 doing this.
the fish become U'r engine .... hahahah.... what the fish....
If only I could get the ride the 2 miles out to the spot 😂
What kind of rod do you use?
What model kayak is your friend using great video
He said is a perception pro pilot and that he wished he would have just spent more money and got a hobie. That being said he managed to catch almost every species in Hawaii on it.
Are you using the audio directly from the gopros?
Or do you use any other microphone?
Just the audio from the gopro
A trigger that big has some cheek meat and jaw meat if you are wiling to fight for it.
Nice trigger !!😉
But Dan, explain to me , why nobody catch and cook the GT?? Its not like or maybe this is dangerous to eat ? 🤔🤔
And please !!🙏🙏 stop playing whit the yellowfin !!! Just CATCH !!!!!🤦♂️
Thanks dude. The smaller GT are totally safe to eat, but I chose to release them most of the time. I do this because they grow fairly slow compared to pelagic species. The big GT can also have ciguatera. The next yellowfin I don’t mess around with 😂
@@FlyingFish_TV ok!! I found "ciguatera " on wiki ! I understand now!! Thank you !!😉👍
What radio were you guys using?
The radio that I used in this video died sometime ago, currently I have a unicom hx890.
What kind of vertical jigs were those?
I don’t remember the name, but I got them at Hanapa’a
trigger fish the favorite fish of my wife before i used to release now i bring home for BBQ.
Nice
What is the name of the cilinder for the live bait?

I have the same sounder. Whats your preference on the gain setting?
I just keep it the preset settings, unless I am deep dropping.

Get a ssd harddrive dude
I've got WD elements drives, honestly I am kind of clueless. I just try to find a way to make everything work.
@@FlyingFish_TV newegg and tigerdirect any other site look for ssd external drives, great for redundancy, if dropped there's no platter to break. More expensive but well worth it. Plannning to post my fishing in western visayas here in the philippines soon. Cheers becareful out there, signed frequent watcher..lol
Less messing around with the camera and more focus on the fish and you would have landed it....
🤦🏽♂️
Come on man if your gonna be here say it right
Say what
Flying Fish TV you said opelu wrong😂
My bad, this video was filmed a year ago. I’m slowly learning
Flying Fish TV thanks man it means a lot
Good job! I was thoroughly entertained! I believe it's a Grey Triggerfish which has a food rating of 9/10. hawaiimarlinfishing.com/underwaterspecies/details/282
It tasted good, but I don't know that it was that good. I'm not one of those people with a refined palate lol.
Me too! But there are foods that I never enjoyed in the past that I love to eat now. Thx!
Just DON’T eat the wuhan bats!
