Slept in and still slayed the wahoo

- We hit the water at 8 am and headed out hoping to find bait as we normally catch them right at sunrise. While we were heading out to the spot my friend saw some smaller fish jumping and I thought they were leather jackets or lai. While we were catching bait they turned out to be small mahi mahi. A school of about 10 were attempting to eat our opleu as we brought them up. We had no problem catching plenty of bait and continued on. I set up with two baits on wire, one close at 50ft and another under a balloon 150ft away. After a quiet first 30 minutes my short bait started getting nervous. Something had grabbed it and so I opened the bail to let it eat. After it had taken 20 feet of line I closed the bail but the drag was too loose. The fish got away and I got my mangled wire back. While I was looking at the wire my other bait got hit on my live liner set up. As the line started speeding off the reel I clicked the reel into gear. Almost immediately a mahi mahi jumped out of the water. I didn’t know how well it was hooked, but I managed to get the 8 lb mahi to the kayak without losing it. While I was fighting the mahi my friend hooked into a wahoo. I retied both of my wire rigs having removed the mangled part above the main hooks. My friend landed the first wahoo and had hooked another much larger one as I put out two more baits. While he was still fighting his second wahoo I got hit with a high speed run on my short bait. I knew it was a wahoo as it luckily pulled me away from my other bait. After fighting the wahoo for several minutes my second bait got hit. I decided to bring the wahoo in first as it was only 50ft below the kayak. As I pulled the wahoo in the kayak I noticed that my other line was now way out up on the surface. Once I finally picked up the other rod there was still some weight on it. I thought It was giant wahoo that had been sharked. but it turned out to be a really big Bonita. The shark had taken 80% of the fish and so I decided to give him the rest. By now my friend had pulled in his second wahoo. I decided to target a yellowfin tuna but stuck out another live bait on wire. While moving to a different area I saw the mahi jumping again and began throwing 3 inch paddle tail on my bait rod. After several attempts I hooked one by the kayak and then immediately lost it as it jumped. With the small mahi gone I trolled quickly almost killing my bait in the process. I started reeling it in quickly, pausing it at 30 feet from the kayak to steer. In the same second I felt something grab my bait and saw it splash on the surface behind me. I immediately put it into live liner mode and the fish sped off with unparalleled speed. I clicked the live drag off and the fish continued to scream line off well past my 200ft of line mark. It came up another wahoo around 25lbs although I will admit that I thought it was bigger. It wasn’t the yellow fin for a grand slam but it is still the coolest wahoo hit I have ever gotten. Great day fishing in paradise.

I gotta say, you have the best b-roll I ever seen on any channel, ever!
Mahi Mahi are the perfect fish. When you said you didn’t wanna put to much pressure on the wahoo because you didn’t know how he was hooked, all I could think of was the kawa kawa that you got taxed on.😟 Ono are so awesome looking all lit up. What a great day of fishing. It is going to be a sad day when you run out of your Hawaii fishing footage.
If I run out of Hawaii footage it will actually mean I edited it all lol. I got lucky and never got sharked on an ono. Lots of smaller galapagos sharks in that spot though. That kawa was out there for about 10 minutes, so no wonder it got sharked. Hope things are going well for you bro!

Things are going pretty good. The more trips I take out in my new boat the more I like it. Went out salmon fishing with my oldest son again at 5:00 am on another cold and foggy morning. Flipped on the radar and I could see where I needed to go to get out of the harbor and once outside I could see where the other boats were fishing about 5 miles away. I had to use the windshield wipers and the diesel heater to see and stay warm. Caught two nice king salmon and a large petrale sole. Life’s good!
Sounds awesome bro!

Heading out again tomorrow for a late afternoon till after dark trip. Hoping for halibut and white sea bass. I have caught many many halibut but so far no joy on the WSBs. I will let you know how I do afterward. 🤙🏼
@@FlyingFish_TVif you ever run out of Hawaii footage, just gotta come back and hang with us some more!!! Hawaii misses you bro!
I also live kayak fishing,but the best part of it is NO Commercials on FlyingFishTv, Thanks for keeping me an essential worker!!!!!!!!!!!!!;;;
Thats weird, I try to make it minimal commercials. Maybe you have a ad blocker or youtube red. Thanks for watching bro
A mokee pokie yellowfin bowl would be killer smellavision
One of my best friends. Keep up the good work brother.
Thanks Nate. Don't forget about the flowers in a Pringle can lol
Like seeing the new balloon technique, always wondered how that works out here. Can't wait for some good weather on that side like that!
Only used the ballon a few times, but it was effective in keeping two lines from tangling.
You in my opinion, are one of the BEST kayak fisherman on UA-cam. What part of Hawaii do you recommend for kayak fishing? I either wanna move to Jupiter Florida or somewhere in Hawaii.
Hi. I like your videos and is nice to see the combo of fishes you got in this video.
Can you do a video o more than one showing in detail the rigs and equipment you use? It would be really helpful.
For example your bait tubes, the balloon with the clamp, etc.
I've been doing kayak fishing for over a year and still need to learn a lot!
Tight lines!
Súper capturas estás al día y esa es la actitud
Everigoud Mr 👍🏼👍🏼❤️
Fantastic day. Man I fucking love kayak fishing!! Yessah

Would love to fish with you that day. Maybe next time 🤙
living in Georgia now, not fishing in Hawaii anytime soon again.
Amazing 😍😍🔥🔥
Thanks 🔥
What a day 👍🏼
That's some epic fishing.
Thanks Mr D. This was an amazing trip
Epic action 🎬 🙌🔥!
Thanks bro, I have been enjoying your videos.
Awesome, how far from the shore do you usually fish?
Usually 1-3 miles from shore, with some longer trips.
🇵🇷 Puerto Rico in the house !!!!
Bet you have some awesome fishing down there! Caught my first King mackerel and first Cobia in Texas a few days ago.
@@FlyingFish_TV here in kayak is very difficult to catch YFT, the other pelagic are good to fish here in the Island .
Your videos are super motivational, why do you bleed the wahoo? Just to kill them or for a better flavor and color in the meat?
Bleeding out your fish can leave the meat better looking and better quality by reducing the bloodline that will be left when cleaning. If you bleed your fish you won't have as intense of a bloodline like you would by just tossing it on ice like that.
Wahoo, king mackerel, cobia … their blood gives the meat the fishy smell. Bleeding the fish will help the meat taste better… especially when left the meat in the freezer in few days. Also, help lower the mercury content from the blood.
What these guys said, I like to bleed all of my fish. Best to do it outside of the kayak, unless you want to clean a lot of blood off of your kayak.
Awesome channel bra. I'm going to be buying a kayak within the next few weeks. How do you store yours? Take it easy.
Thanks bro. In Hawaii I left it in the sun, not smart. After I got a new hull on warranty I kept it on my porch on cushions and covered it with a tarp. Not that I have a garage I built a rack for my two kayaks out of 2x4s and pvc pipe.
@@FlyingFish_TV I bought an outback and am debating between storing it upside down on cross bars or right side up on pvc that will flex with the shape. What do you recommend?
Nice videos! How you find the wahoo?
Thanks bro. They are in different places at different times of the year, but on this trip they were at 240ft or 40 fathoms (in the fall). If you can find a buoy at that depth that holds bait you are likely to find ono. In the winter time they stay shallower in around 80-100ft (warmer water is in closer). Best way to target them is with 50-80ft of line out. Stay on top or close to on of your bait in an area that you think holds wahoo.
@@FlyingFish_TV thanks🤙🏽
Great day on the water. Thank you for sharing.

It was a really special day, thanks for watching Bret.
130 thumbs up and no haters! Flyingfishtv rocks!
lol, hi Bill
Sr. How long you drop the bait from the kayak what is the distance thanks from Puerto Rico
Hey bro. For wahoo I let out 50-80ft of line out and try to stay mostly on top of my bait. For yellowfin tuna I let 250ft feet of line out.
Thats owsome i preshiate that info 🤙🤙🤙
Did you change your depthfinder? This one seems smaller?
I did, to a 64cv from the 74cv. 1" smaller screen. In real time I have a 74sv with a gt 51 transducer
