Of all of the online tutorials for the TASCAM DR-40, this one was the most thorough, most orderly, and best presented. It got me where I needed to be to start recording.
just purchased the Tascam dr-40 from guitar center , so far I am amazed at the quality of the product, great for recording guitar, and vocals, this video really helped to get me going properly. a million thanx Joe keep up the great work!!
Thanks big brother Joe Romersa for this extensive one on one guide and diving deep into this device. Best on the youtube. I purchased this DR 40 a few years ago and let someone use it and they gave it back to me with a broken earjack. Totally my fault for "being nice" and sometimes as I we find out in life "being nice" comes with a hidden price and double trouble. I feel better now because I tossed this DR40 in a box for 3 years and moved on. After going through your study guide, I believe there's hope to resurrect my recorder ans set it even with a broken ear jack. Joe knows audio!!
"See! Reels like the old days!". That warmed my heart. Love this little hand held digital Tascam I have, thanks for helping me navigate it! Although I'm still nostalgic for the genuine reel to reels...
Thanks, Joe! Got a chuckle from the rec/pause button moment, but you very kindly set me up for video recording in one pass and now I feel confident and ready to go!
THANK YOU!!! I've been trying to figure out how to initialize the card for like 30 minutes using the manual and you covered it in one minute, thank you thank you thank you!
I dug out my old Tascam to record audio for guitar lesson tutorial vids (running the audio from mixer to the Tascam). I didn't use it much back when I first got it because I never figured out how to use it properly. This video is super helpful and should get me up and running in no time.
Good directions my only comment is you can pause recording by pressing the record button and then pressing it again to continue to record on same track. Then when complete hit the home or stop button like you said. Thanks for the video!!! I don't know why people would vote this thumbs down it was really good and you have over 161,500 views!!!!
This is really an excellently explained video. Nice job. I have an old Tascam recorder which I really never used, as it just seemed a bit too complex. This video is really, really helpful for me. Thanks for posting.
WOW ! I have an LR-10 that was doing exactly the same and I too was ready to toss it in the trash until I saw this post and tried it and IT WORKED !!!! Thank you !
Thank you! I'm going over sound in a few weeks in my Film II class, but I've had this Tascam for about a year now and I always had trouble figuring out which settings I should use and such. Now I'm excited to use my own Tascam in class!
I thoroughly enjoyed your tutorial! You really broke down everything from beginning to end and your personality was very enjoyable as well LOL thank you so much for creating this video I subscribed to your channel I wish I could be in one of your classes it seems like it would be very entertaining!
Thanks for the video. Very helpful! It would be better if the music in the end of the video was at the same level as your voice in it. Scared me a a lot after watching!
Joe!! It's one of your favorite students!! You're right, you did teach us this...but I need a refresher. When I playback what I've recorded, sound is only coming out of my left speaker. i have it set to record in stereo. What am I doing wrong??
Joe , Thanks so much for taking the time to do this on UA-cam ... I am an old rocker and an analog man , like Joe Walsh .... but not that damn talented .....
Wow! I just looked up the school that you said you taught at it's in Burbank California actually not far from me I live in Los Angeles! Do you still teach there?
I have a question! I am new to the video making! I can do photography well, but I am curious on how to hook this up to a Canon 70D. I tried using the XLR Y splitter to stereo plug to have plug directly into the camera but that does not work like a Rode Video Mic! Does this model only work where it records and then you have to later sync it up using Plural Eyes or syncing software? I can use this with my Tascam 60D-MKII and sync it with Plural Eyes! However Plural Eyes only seems to work the the recording from the Tascam 60D-MKII for some reason and not the Tascam Dr-40. So I guess my question is, can this be hooked directly to the camera as a external mic like the Rode Video Mic? I tried the XLR Y-Splitter and that did not work! Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks and great tutorial too!
which 1 is better to make your songs a Tascam DP-008EX or the TascamDr-40.Because when i rap sometimes my voice goes too loud a little bit too louder then the beat.I never had a Tascam Dr-40 but 1 thing i like about it from watching this video is that it lowers on the other track if your voice gets extra loud basically keeping it leveled ?
Thank you for covering the 48kHz 16 bit issue at 14:09. Anyone watching this...do what Joe says or you'll spend the rest of life in post. Not the kind of "fix it in post" you'll ever want to do.
Hi Joe, thank you so much for the tutorial. I am wondering: can I use this with my point and shoot camera (that does not have external mic output), so I sync audio with video by replacing original low quality audio with the Tascam's video? Really appreciate your help
If you only use one mic with the xlr cable, will the sound only come through the left speaker? And can that run through to the computer at the same time, because for the phantom power Im currently using a Focusrite Scarlet Solo. ~Karen🌹
Hello. I am having a problem with my DR-40. In normal Int Mic mode I understand the blinking red light right side is the 2 second buffer ready to record button. Then you push down on it again to get the solid red and it starts recording to file then when you are done recording you push the home button left side to stop recording and close that audio clip down. That's great except when I am recording and there is a few seconds of silence it stops recording. Is there a way to make it record continuously? I am recording to a live performance and we have periods of silence and not having that on the track makes it difficult to match the person speaking to the right section of the Tascam files. I have like 30 sound clips for a 5 minute act. What is the setting for non-stop recording? Thanks, Bill
Hello: I'm looking at the Tascam reference PDF on this but... it's not easy to follow. I'm trying to set two different record levels with left & right external mics, and keeping the tracks separate for mixing/tweaking later. Let me know if you know how that's done. thanks
Hello Joe R. I am Sebastian Arg . Thanks for uploading this tutorial. Consultation ! I can connect to my Dslr tascam for shooting video with audio, and is a single file ? (video and audio) . Greetings and sorry translation. I do not speak English
I NEED HELP!! Just picked up a DR-40x to record my DJ sets. Current having a speed issue. After I record on the device, I switch the SD card to my computer and it plays back a lot faster than originally recorded. Speed goes from 130bpm to 140bpm
I have a question that is bugging the crap out of me. When you plug in your headphones into the line out of the tascam, does it "lock"/"snap" into place (like it would on a phone or pretty much any other headphone jack)? Cause with mine, it just kind of slides in with a bit of friction without that "snapping" into place feel.
Not a bad intro, but most of this was fairly readily apparent. I listened to it hoping you would detail how to use the 4-track mode to lay down vocals to a background track...
Thank you so much! Super helpful. If you are recording for audio only (not for use with video), would 16/48k still be the right settings for depth & sample rate?
can i take audio from my earphone out straight into my camera ? will the audio be different from the audio being recorded onto the sd card in the tascam dr-40?
I would love to know if it is possible to set DIFFERENT levels for each mic while using two different external mics? I was trying to record a singer (shotgun mic) playing through a guitar amp (SM 57 in front of the speaker), and couldn't figure out how to 1. separate the tracks and 2. Make the shotgun mic level a lot hotter vs. the guitar amp mic. THANKS & LET ME KNOW!
is it possible to have the internal mic recording while speaking into an external mic so that the users voice can be heard but still have all the surrounding sounds to be picked up by the internal mic simultaneously?

However the right channel is not recording. The microphones and the XLR cables were taken out of the equation, they all work. I have record mode set on ‘4 channel’ and ‘EXT 1/2’. I need to know what kind of lavalier mic may I use with this recorder. I tested with radioshack and azden lavalier and theres no way to make them work. I also used a tasktar shotgun and works great, but no success with any lavalier mic. Thanks for help.
I have a question if anyone can help. How do I record with the ext in and the int mics simultaneously and control each of their input levels separately? Thanks!
Our drummer bought one of these, but when we listen to the playback...its way faster than what tempo we recorded with. He cant figure out how to access the "Playback" speed...is it half speed (50%)...100% (normal speed) and 150%..which i think it is stuck on. he cant figure out how to access the menu for the "speed" adjust....help me out!!..lol
Dripfade it could be because of a difference of sample rate. Make sure your session is set to the same sample rate as your recording. Let me know if this works!
LOL.we thought that too^^...or, our perceptions were just lagging. But we recorded a song from the radio, just to see, but the radio song was chugging along at time and a half too fast also. Gotta be a setting, Ill try what ya said though, with the VSA..lol
If you want to record on the same track you can hit record to pause and hit it again to resume your track right or is it better to do it on separate tracks?
Thanks for the tutorial, but at 9:37 you said pressing the record button again is wrong. It's not wrong, it's really a preference if you want to continue recording on that same file or not. Or you have a choice of creating a new wav file. Depends on what you are recording. Just my opinion. No pun. Overall good job! Thanks again
I use my Tascam DR 40 in overdub with good results, but the one thing I can't find is how to record separate tracks and then to mix the separate tracks in. Caqn i do it on the Tascam or is it best to mix on my computer? Thanks for the help.
PLEASE HELP: I record audio with a Tascam Dr-40 and edit it in Adobe Premiere. One some other sound software, the sound is clear but there's no waveform. If I pretend it's not and issue and upload it on UA-cam for example, the sound plays fine on a computer or stereo, but there's no sound or some muffled crackling noise when played on an iphone/iPad, but sometimes it plays with good headphones. Can someone PLEASE explain this problem and how to fix it?
+Joe Romersa I only use one external mic to record though. Would that make a difference? The sound plays just fine until I play it on iPhone/iPad speakers. The weird thing is that Adobe Premiere doesn't detect any issues with the sound clips, but FL Studio detects that there is no waveform, but the sound still plays. What's weirder, is that this problem occurs with only some of the audio clips, while others are perfectly fine. Is there a way to fix the audio that's already been recorded? It's a frustrating mystery how this is happening.
Please help me! I want to use my Movo PM20 Dual-Headed Lavalier Lapel Clip-on Omnidirectional Condenser Microphone for Apple with my new TASCAM 40. Obviously I need an XLR 1/4!?! Can I buy this one: Roland RCC-10-TRXM 1/4" TRS-XLR(male) or this one: Contrik NMK0,5MP3 BL (this one seems to be stereo). What is the male, female difference? Please help me. I need it for work. Denny Gerard thanks dude!
Excellent review and overview - made things so much easier than reading the manual! Thanks!
Very well done. Best over all review of Tascom DR-40 operation I have seen on you tube.
This is really an excellently explained video. Nice job. I have an old Tascam recorder which I really never used, as it just seemed a bit too complex. This video is really, really helpful for me. Thanks for posting.

Thank you! I'm going over sound in a few weeks in my Film II class, but I've had this Tascam for about a year now and I always had trouble figuring out which settings I should use and such. Now I'm excited to use my own Tascam in class!
This was a terrific tutorial and I want to thank you so much for gifting your time.
Thanks for this excellent basic tutorial, helps a lot with my new Tascam. Has anyone told you you sound like Jeff Bridges?
Good basic intro--much more satisfactory than the instruction manual that comes with the unit. :-)
I thoroughly enjoyed your tutorial! You really broke down everything from beginning to end and your personality was very enjoyable as well LOL thank you so much for creating this video I subscribed to your channel I wish I could be in one of your classes it seems like it would be very entertaining!
excellent, exactly the info i was looking for
Great video - I needed a 'Sesame Street' type of tutorial to get started.
Awesome tutorial. I wished I had watched it last week. LOL! But I know now.
Great job, ....very clear THANKS!!
Thank you for making this video. I had 30 minutes to learn how to use this device. I now have 20 minutes to spare!
Thanks for the video. Very helpful!
It would be better if the music in the end of the video was at the same level as your voice in it.
Scared me a a lot after watching!
Thank you. Was having an issue with mine recording. Would not record. Followed your steps and Viola! It's working again (my XLR tips?)
Really great tutorial - exactly what I was looking for. Thanks :)
Thanks man, very helpful. Beats reading the owners manual.

Joe...going to go look for your tutorial on the 44! Great job!
Can you play one of the files you recorded and then press record and create an new track but with both recordings included? Like multitracking
Thanks so much Joe Romerse for the tutorial it really worked for me.I appreciate.

Joe , Thanks so much for taking the time to do this on UA-cam ... I am an old rocker and an analog man , like Joe Walsh .... but not that damn talented .....
Thanks. Nice walk through.
this helped me out ! I bought a cheap mic with a 3.5mm jack and realized I had the wrong thing :)
this was a life saver for me. thank you so much
This is so informative..sad to say we never get to know how to use this during my 1-term at IAFT-Cebu..
Great tutorial, thank you! Worked perfectly for getting to know my new DR-40X. Has anyone ever told you that you sound like Stephen Wright? lol

Check your sample rate and bit depth. Make sure you’re playing back at the same sample rate as the file.
Can I use this device as an audio interface too?
Like is possible with the 40X
THANK YOU. VERY HELPFUL
Hi Joe,
Regarding rec mode, which setting do you recommend is using a lavalier?
16/48k , wav files.
is posible import wav tracks (24 bits) and work like a mp3 player?
I have a question that is bugging the crap out of me. Kim McIntyre 16/44 is fine for normal audio.

can i take audio from my earphone out straight into my camera ?
will the audio be different from the audio being recorded onto the sd card in the tascam dr-40?

is it possible to have the internal mic recording while speaking into an external mic so that the users voice can be heard but still have all the surrounding sounds to be picked up by the internal mic simultaneously?
Zachary Dunn is not possible
Thanks for the video, I have a quick question. I use the DR-40 for band recording, audio only. I recently tried four channel recording using two pencil condenser mics. However the right channel is not recording. The microphones and the XLR cables were taken out of the equation, they all work. I have record mode set on ‘4 channel’ and ‘EXT 1/2’. I use ‘Mic + phantom’ setting, with 48 V of phantom power. Is there a setting missing? Could it have something to do with The mixer settings? Thanks in advance
Tascam DR 40 source: just shows ext in 1 does not show ext in 1/2
I need to know what kind of lavalier mic may I use with this recorder. I tested with radioshack and azden lavalier and theres no way to make them work. I also used a tasktar shotgun and works great, but no success with any lavalier mic. Thanks for help.
JuanK Nuñez You need a lav mic with an XLR connector.
Joe Romersa You can't use a lav with a 3.5mm/1/8 connection with this unit?
Joe Romersa WIll do. !! Thanks ! So there is a "session" option, within the "sample" rate catagory in the "speed" menu?
Dripfade that's not in the speed menu, it's during the recording process. Turn off the VSA or set it to zero.
Joe Romersa ....or it could be the recording Gods saying your song's too fast?
LOL.we thought that too^^...or, our perceptions were just lagging. But we recorded a song from the radio, just to see, but the radio song was chugging along at time and a half too fast also. Gotta be a setting, Ill try what ya said though, with the VSA..lol
If you want to record on the same track you can hit record to pause and hit it again to resume your track right or is it better to do it on separate tracks?
BadKarma 714 it all depends on if you are working with video or not as far as sync goes but otherwise sure you can do that!
Nice video thanks. You typed in Cat and the rest of the alphabets went away. ie the Cam leftover from Tascam. How?
Can I plug an external lapel mic into this for interviews? If so, which?
Nice video. Two questions - does it come with a card (if so what size) and about how many hours can you get out of quality batteries? Thanks
comes with a 2GB SD card. battery life is... normal?
Thanks for the tutorial, but at 9:37 you said pressing the record button again is wrong. It's not wrong, it's really a preference if you want to continue recording on that same file or not. Or you have a choice of creating a new wav file. Depends on what you are recording. Just my opinion. No pun. Overall good job! Thanks again
Hello and a quick Q - Can we record two sources at the same time? 2 mics or line +mic?
can that unit take a line in from lav mic?
Thanks
Aluchi Del Pasado yes
how to set it for recording from mixer, all stuff that need to be set properly? Thank u
Ena Becirbasic Set it for line level, adjust the level as normal.

I have a DR 40. I insert a new Sandisk 64GB and try to format but I get an invalid card message. Any advice to fix this is appreciated.
Sorry, With a Tascam DR-40
wheels just like the old daaaays. Is it possible to connect a electric guitar? And is it possible to add layers on recordings?
Can i cheq the sound of each individual Channel whan i reacordin in the 4 Channels?
I use my Tascam DR 40 in overdub with good results, but the one thing I can't find is how to record separate tracks and then to mix the separate tracks in. Caqn i do it on the Tascam or is it best to mix on my computer? Thanks for the help.
Richard Miller best in the computer! The Tascam is best for "in the field" recording.
+Richard Miller I think, you can record in stereo, edit it in your computer, mute L or right then mix it using your computer.
PLEASE HELP:
I record audio with a Tascam Dr-40 and edit it in Adobe Premiere.
Can someone PLEASE explain this problem and how to fix it?
sounds like a phase cancellation issue to me. meaning it'll play OK and stereo but in mono my cancel itself out!

Is there a way to fix the audio that's already been recorded? It's a frustrating mystery how this is happening.
