If you don’t feel like making music. You could Just work on your drum kits or find samples to put away for later. Often you’ll become inspired and start working on something.
I recently started to overcome the wall. No more feeling shame about my music being "too simple" or "not sounding unique". Just keep it mostly idiomatic, and do what works. I've learned that this drive that pushes us to make our art "unique" or "complex" is actually an egotistical need. We put our own needs above the needs of our art.
I came into hiphop production from a technical death metal and concert piano background. My beats were complex and progressive when I first started but had tons of clashing elements with rapidly evolving melodies that were impossible to wrap your brain around. It took years to slow down and simplify, get an ear for sound selection and learn to mix and master at least moderately well. Eleven years in and I'm still learning. Never give up.
The exact same thing happened to me, it was a real struggle learning to simplify my beats because my brains were so used to the musical technicality. I still make more complex and progressive beats from time to time but very differently now that ive learned to slow down.
Bruh 😢 seriously I’m touched. One of the most inspirational video not only about music but also about my life… I appreciate it. I will never give up because I love music, where my passion lies.
I genuinely only make music in the night. It doesnt matter how alone I am, in the night im just able to think more clearly and be less distracted and more motivated.
I've been making beats for years and I just found out that I already know all these tips from my own experience. When I started, I obviously didn't know anything (I knew music theory but that's it), and I felt completely lost, so I didn't even know where to start, how to close "the gap" or which program should I use. Now that I'm watching this video, I have realised that I already know everything I need to get better, and I didn't expect to learn it all by myself when I started making beats. So for those of y'all who are starting in the beatmaking world, listen to this dude, he knows his shit lol
Wow I wish this video was around three or four years ago when I first got back into beat making. This is hands down the best guidance for anyone new to this. Navie D has been keeping it real for years now listen to this guy! Congrats on the growth of your channel
Naive D, i just wanted to say that you are a big inspiration for me to make beats. I usually make future bass/trap metal beats but your unique sampling intrigued me. Thank you. Keep improving on your videos and keep being positive it brings so much to us the viewers.
As somewhat of a beginner producer, I think your point on mistakes is really good, specifically about the Gap. How would I close this gap? I've been trying to improve for years, and I think I'm getting better at it, but extremely slowly, with little to no progress. Would love your advice on this
Great video, @NavieD! There are some great lessons in this one. Loved "the wall" analogy, and the common errors section. Thanks for helping the community out!

Could you cover a way to grow your creative limits? That could fit well next to a video like this I really went through all of these things as a new producer but got over most of it quickly with your videos and community.
I was out of it for bout 2 yrs there, and now I’ve come to realized it’s not entirely like riding a bike😅 you forget a lot. Now I’m here refreshing the basics
You are a legend, sir. A lot of what you mention here is why I quit making beats many moons ago. I love how self-aware you are, because as Bruce Lee said, all knowledge is ultimately self-knowledge, and vice versa. Meaning, the more you know yourself the more others can relate to you, because we're not as different as society wants us to think we are. Quick question, I'm currently LITERALLY at rock bottom, and have a pretty shitty laptop my job centre gave me 😂. Do you think I should hold out for a better cpu, or do you think there is a program my cpu can handle, which at the same time is comprehensive enough to accommodate my needs (I'm the boombap guy)? Quick note, i love plugins that lend a gritty hip hop feel. I used to use fl studio which is pretty plugin friendly.
Can you teach about how find instruments for different genres. How every genre uses it's own set of sounds. It will help with people like me who pick up some instruments and make weirdest music which ultimately doesn't falls in any genre.
i would add that learning how the tools you use work will also increase your quality, not only your DAW or hardware but the plugins and effects that you use....i use FL and have been going through organizing my effects list, which was long, and just seeing what effects i havent used even do opened my eyes...i was using the same ones all the time, which they sounded good yes, but theres much more i had access to that was doing nothin...ill do the same with my VSTs as well and ill prolly find the same thing.....brilliant video

Sometimes, at least in my case, it was the plugin. I'm not saying that I couldn't do without it. But I got triggered mentally with a creative spark when I started using Octane. I just enjoy it and its collection of sounds. Easily the best 20 dollars I've invested. But that's just me
The funny thing is I only use logic sounds to do remixes and my friends that have made remixes are dumbfounded that I only use this. And never used plug ins
im kind of thinking about how if you produce with super high quality headphones it can really make your music sound worse to people on those little tin speakers or just lower quality headphones. i suppose people who will like and support music have decent headphones? im not sure.
