Another tip: never place your hi hats right under your kick. Put it slightly after or before the kick. So the kick comes more forward. It also creates more bounce to your beats 😉
I watch this kind of stuff ALL DAY, everyday, and only found your channel just a few minutes ago. This is rich stuff for noobs AND veterans. Gonna go check more of your stuff out as soon as this puppy is finished. Great work bro.
awesome guidance. I made a quick track and thought "man i don't wanna touch percussion, it's difficult and stressful." but barely even a third into the "Beginner" section of the vid I paused it, went back to my track, effortlessly came up with and applied some percussion to my track, and i love it so much more. Thanks!
Definitely agree on the randomizer - less is more there. I typically put like a 3-8% randomness on velocity and manually set the groove to help make loops sound a lot less static, almost adds a bit of a "round robin" effect. Subtle variation does a lot to alleviate ear fatigue. Sometimes a super subtle randomized pitch shift goes a long way too.
Thank you so much for adding the controls to things you do in FL. That alone separates you from over half the other beat making channels. You're one of the best imo.
One thing I learned back in the FL 3x days is using a Layer channel to group all the drum samples I want to use (in the setting panel, change the grouping to split children), then that way I can control all the drum samples from one piano roll. Saves time for the majority of stuff I'm doing. If I'm editing individual parameters of different samples, I just select the key that sample falls on, then make my edits
@@NavieD I had fun fixing up an old beat and trying to use what I know now to try and improve it. I had went back to an unfinished beat from my 1st 6 months of beat making. Now i'm trying to fix a lot of older beats
I've learned more about drum making than ever before, thank you! Do play with the Attack on your drum sounds as this will change the character of it - good for a softer hit on those in-between sounds
Solid tips without excess hype or self-promotion, well done. Might I add- it never hurts to learn to "play" whatever drums you're using (just be sure you've got a low-latency setup and at least velocity); I started with a Korg M1 and an early Mac DAW called Vision, which let me practice playing the drumkits along with whatever, then seeing on the MIDI track what the timing differences were between quantized and, say, a Purdie shuffle.😉
as someone who has alot of stuff down in FL studios but long time struggles with beats and see's good drums as essential make or break to a track this advice here is gold
This is very practical approach, I used to think I'm a drum mastermind. But after watching this I realize, I'm still a beginner😂. Heartbreaking but needed it, as an eye opener, to GROW... Thanks🔥🔥🔥
One great tool is using your own natural rhythm and playing out the pattern on your pads, you get pretty good variation with velocity , etc . I can’t stand to click in notes , just my personal preference but I also play the drums .
Love the level of knowledge you deliver every single time..for next time,i want you to throw a video on 808s How to use 808 effectively based on beats and genre..LOVE YOUR CONTENT
Much love and Respect for you bro. You're the REAL ONE on UA-cam. Can't wait to showcase you my work in future and whatever comes, just know you're the no #1 reason for it. I already gave up on music till your channel popped up in my feed a few months ago. Very grateful for your videos.
Hey, I paused in the middle of this video, to THANK YOU for making a video about drum beats IN FL Studio. It's REALLY HARD to find anyone that is willing to make videos using this software as it's my primary DAW. Appreciate it!
Lunch break has just gotten so much better Navie🙌🏽🙌🏽 Jay Cactus is in Canada and looking to meet up with some Canadian producers for some videos. Not sure how close you two are cos I know Canada is huge but be worth getting in touch with each other! P.S I can rap that fast😉
Add to the PRO section: Build you own samples using down sampling on a piece of hardware and the get that back into yout computer. It doesn't need to be a SP1200 - a SU200 is enough. It really does wonders. Really pro stuff is to sampling that again - sampling your own stuff in the end. Have fun!
When I was starting out production, I made stuff that sounded like the "expert" drums, but that's just because I was overdoing it and didn't know when to stop lol.
Yeaaah ! I'm just experimenting with some rare drums patterns with Voodoo percs and industrial sounds and this its gonna help me a lot , maaan the timming it's just amazing...
Thanks for sharing! Definitely some great tips in there. I'm excited to experiment with some of the techniques in this video to spice up my drum patterns. Keep up the grind 💪💪
Sorry, I’m a little late to this party. Just stumbled across this clip tonight. The best piece of advice here, and it is so often overlooked due to the randomizers and generators out there, is to get manual with it. Build it. Create it. Experiment with it. Put your style on to it. And if you are a beginner just dipping your toes into this pool, THIS is how you develop your style. Break the ice. Take a chance. Be willing to make a mistake. Finding out what doesn’t work is just as important as knowing what does. There is great information in this clip on how to do it, and what comes with each level of progression. You can control the what, the where, and the when, as long as you’re willing to try. Compositions are way better when you use your own beat loops. And when you make your own, with all the tools these modern programs come with, not only will your beats be more satisfying to you, you’ll be that much more savvy when it comes to producing all the other elements of your jam. Get manual with it. It’s worth it.
So far I think he has a great understanding how to make the beats sound human while using modern tools to speed up the process. Going to use some of this stuff in my projects
5:14 I've been using FL Studio for nearly 20 years and I'm JUST NOW FINDING OUT about the god damn CHOPPER TOOL!? Honestly this is why I both love and hate FL Studio. There's a million different ways to accomplish the exact same thing! I literally would've saved hundreds of hours if I knew about the Chopper tool years ago! I literally draw out every single one of my hi hat patterns and it can often times be extremely time consuming! Especially when you factor in the fact that I've produced more than a few thousand different instrumentals!
Another tip: never place your hi hats right under your kick. Put it slightly after or before the kick. So the kick comes more forward. It also creates more bounce to your beats 😉
Never thought about that, it lifted a whole new spectrum.
@@rickard.eriksson yup, just that little change will make a big difference. It gives more life to your beat

I dig that, Tyler

What you mean when you say putting the snare on the two and four is number five and 13 in terms of placement 16 grid pads in every measure
2 and the 4 would be referring to how many beats. You are referring to how many steps
