In the scene blackthone says "Unless i win" torinaga likes that answer because it mirrors his situation bieng outnumbered by his enemies.. And blackthorn just saves his ass not taking a bath because the assassin is one of the maids whose gonna bathe him.. probably he will die with the other maids on thr bath😂😂
The little smile when Blackthorne said "Unless I win"...The whole of the Japanese Imperial political system was about Honor, and what isnt said. There is what is said in public, and what is the actual truth. Reading between the lines.
-When Blackthorne steps between Toranaga and the assassin, he didnt real protect Toranaga, but the very act of putting his life on the line for the Lord was big.
Nothing screams loyalty like take a sword swipe for your lord.
I really liked Ishido's plotting in this episode. I can see why hes the true threat amongst the Council Leaders because hes the only one besides Yoshii that isnt letting Religion get in the way of the bigger picture and him being the one behind John's Breakout by seeing this guy has some usefulness is a legitimately good move.
Meanwhile,Yoshi is seeing how religion is being used to Colonize the world and him seeing the "the bigger picture" with Japans place amongst the entire globe at this point is also an amazing scene.
I really love how they are showing how Religion is truly a sneakier way of Colonizing,its happening for legitimate Centuries and i like how this story doesnt hide their place in this conflict.
In the olden times, the Catholic Church and the Spanish colonizers required the locals (indios) to adopt Spanish names and surnames. While the names chosen were in common usage, the surnames were chosen from a book called "Catalogo Alfabetico de Apellidos", roughly ttranslated as "Catalog of Alphabetical Surnames".
This also happened in the Philippines, so you can find many non-European-looking Filipinos or Filipinos with Chinese features bearing Spanish-sounding surnames.

You mock Blackthorn but hes 100% right. The reason Europeans didn't like bathing is because they had discovered excessive bathing caused disease. They didn't know why until germ theory was developed later on but your skin produces a protective anti-microbial film that resists harmful bacterial infections. When you scrub that away during a bath/shower you leave your skin raw and open for bacteria to penetrate and reproduce causing skin infections/rashes and colds/fevers.
Maria is just her Christian name as a convert. Mariko, Lady Mariko is her real Japanese name
I think she corrects him about her name as a shade to the Portuguese trying to colonize her name from Mariko to "Lady Maria".

Mariko-sama means Lady Mariko. He just calls her Mariko, which is too familiar. She's basically telling him to address her as Lady Mariko.

I see lots of Western people react like...2 baths in a week? Like hello....back then that's the European standard, which now is considered unhygienic!
That still sounds crazy to me. But you can't blame em. The "Flux, or Pox" or whatever it was he was talking about put the fear of god in him.
@@Syntell Europeans washed themselves regularly, but they did not take baths. They would have used a bowl of water with a washcloth and some soap. Aside from having to haul a bathtub's worth of water in (and then heat some in a kettle, one pot at a time) and back out using buckets being a major pain in the ass, not having a room to do this in, and then the water being...not all that clean to begin with (especially in the cities) - taking a full bath in a tub was not something the average person would do very often. And yeah, you get wet all over with a kind of funky water in a cold room...no wonder they thought it would make them sick.
They didn't drink plain water either - that's why they'd be drinking beer, watered down wine, or tea (once tea was brought back from the East) all the time, either sterilized with alcohol or boiled, those were safer. Out in the country where rivers, wells, and lakes were cleaner, they could drink water and be fine.
Europeans didn't bathe at all,one reason for the black plague taking over Europe. The Moorish conquering of Spain brought with it bathing laws.
Taiko never could make any child not only with his official wife but also with dozens of his concubines. His heir was finally born when Taiko was already 57.

I know it seems that way since we're seeing the story from Toranaga's perspective, but what Ishido is saying isn't really wrong. The whole point of the council was to share the regency until the heir comes of age. So Toranaga suddenly making a bunch of marriage proposals and expanding his power is very suspicious and goes against the Taiko's wishes.
This show is awesome and Sanada is a badass

If you want nonstop action this isn’t the show for you. It’s better to have less action, but that action is more meaningful, vs a bunch of action with little meaning. That ending sequence was just a woman sneaking through a hall, but felt more intense than anything in the last fast and furious movie,
