- LAST TIME, we took a look at some priceless sets from the Big House 4 in a bit of a Melee history lesson. This time, I watched another earth-shattering tournament set from the same tournament... But this set, it involved me, and one of the most notorious players of all time, BORP.

Can confirm that my friend who got me into Melee and introduced me to Borp said "he took a set off Toph!" Then later amended it to "he took a game." Finally I watched the set and saw that neither were true. It's funny how being taken to last stock in one game was just slowly morphed into losing the set in the memory of a bunch of Melee fans

He doesnt wavedash? He only edgeguards from the stage? Borp was just an ultimate player born in the wrong generation
Ultimate players do wavedash, it just doesn't do much if anything. They want to but the game doesn't let them.
The amount of times I see people waveland on a platform just for the sake of it is crazy
Edit: wanted to share the use cases it does have though, but they're super situational
Proto used it at summit as a situational bait "I'm running and can't dash back, that means I'm committing. WRONG, have A wavedash back forward tilt for trying to punish me"
Sometimes it can be used to cancel initial dash and stay grounded, similar to the previous example since dashing is an actually commitment in ult.
Its usually a little faster to land on a platform with it.
Some charactera do just have bad ones though where even these don't apply.
Keep in mind most of this is from 1 player at a few tournaments. Very limited

@@kestrel7493 I used to be an ultimate player and I did that shit all the time, and the people I was playing were like "Oh what's this tech you're doing with the platforms? Oh that's really cool seems pretty good" Thankfully I have realized this was trash and also switched to melee
It's still crazy to me that Borp was able to beat a fantastic player such as yourself without any tech. Just goes to show how next level he was at the time.
That first Borp game win vs him was insane 🔥
Especially when he won the set and hit Toph with his classic line “It’s Borpin’ time!”

One of my favorite melee clips is the handwarmer of the grand finals at MOAL 37 between PGH Carroll and Borp, where Borp wavedashes a couple of times during the handwarmer and PGH Carroll looks over at him like WTF and the commentators freak out.
Also, one of my favorite melee player facts is that Borp is the brother of Pannenkoek (of the Super Mario 64 A Button Challenge fame).

Bro. WTF. I remember watching this set in 2017 when I started watching Melee. I legit thought Borp beat you, even til today. That's a crazy Mandela Effect.

I imagine the "no techskill God" borp highlight video probably helped cause a lot of the misconceptions with borp by only showing him at his best.
and like. fr borp is sick. he's just. not as good as people kinda want him to be, "no techskill" is just such a cool and goofy underdog story, and we sorta forged a mythology around that.
I think some of the confusion also comes cause of that toph vs m2k Roy set a while ago, somehow
I just love how Toph keeps being impressed by himself. I play a low-tech Sheik so I also love borp.
Learn how to do tech skill. Trust me it'll make improving so much easier, and you'll hit a wall pretty quickly without it. Especially in this day and age just watching the borp set like virtually none of the stuff he was doing would work today imo, unless your only goal in the game is to be the best in your friend group or maybe take a game off of 0-2 scrubs.

That was sick when Borp beat him.
I lived outside of pit for like 11 months so I went to a couple of the pgh weeklies. The first one I went to I played my first game against borp and was told "Really the only thing I can say about Borp is he is going to destroy you and you aren't going to know what happened." He was right. Mans was the captain of the chess club or something like that and he definitely played like it.

Up-smash at low-mid percents is my favorite anti air, I used to be pretty solid at utilizing the invincible torso to space around moves. If it trades you can get some crazy follow-ups.

Borp is actually from the distant future, he was sucked back in time in a space voyage gone wrong. He loved competitive melee, but he felt it unfair that his futuristic understanding of the game gave him an advantage, so he voluntarily handicaps himself to maintain the state of the game.
