We Chinese call it hand pole for a rod without a reel. 90% freshwater fishermen in China use hand pole for fishing. The technique is called "suspended weight(sinker) fishing", came from Taiwan, also called "Taiwan style fishing". A slim and sensitive float is required as strike indicator. The notable feature of this technique is that the fishline under the water surface is always perpendicular to the bottom.
They are used in the Delta a lot for panfish. Bobber and worm type deal. The pole allows you to stand on the levee and reach over the rules and cattails and drop the bait at the edge of the cover. It’s also called “dapping”.
"I got one, I got one..." considering that is not anywhere close to being monster proportions, your excitement cracked me up, I've never seen you that excited in all your vids 😂 Good job, fun vid as usual!
you're the reason i started surf fishing . took a while to get my first one and then came down with corona the next day. now i haven't been able to fish for almost 2 weeks
The Japanese use them a good amount, and just like everything else, they have turned into an art form. They are traditionally bamboo in construction, and can go for a good deal of money, because the quality ones take a long time to produce.(There are some good yt vids on the process.) On the extreme end, beefy versions were used to commercially catch tuna(Also on yt) I have used them a lot while fishing in HI, for Halalu/Akule and other assorted species. You can just tie your line directly to the woven string, with a slip knot. It digs in and holds just fine, but attaching a small swivel also works.
The cane pole looks perfect for catching trout from the shore with a micro jig. They cruise along the shore 10-20ft out. I think cane pole and micro jig could be a deadly combo.
@@12345B yeah I’ll look silly but I wonder if I can jig a mini jig in front of the trout cruising by shore, sight fishing without spooking them because I can be 24 feet away. Lol
@@12345B yeah I wouldn’t be casting, just holding the jig vertically in front of their face a few feet from shore but far enough away so I don’t spook them
Cook episode please! One of the reasons I thumb'd a couple videos down before. If you don't want to always do catch and cook then at least show your methods of cleaning and processing your catches. That's always interesting. Maybe show stomach contents and explain where that species is in the spawn cycle when holding. Coming from the Midwest and freshwater only I can tell you when most species here are pre/current/post spawn. California has to be different! That's information most fisherman would be interested in, especially when they have never fished that region. Also that method of ripping cranks is not wildly popular here but is very effective at catching crappie. Most people usually work jigs or float a bobber and minnows depending on the season.
I have been doing this for nearly 40 years . I use leadcore line and fly fishing tapered leaders. Use bait or flies. Advantage of using flies is no bait changes.
24' tenkara. Cool. Just a knot at end of short cord at the tip then a loop with the leader passed through to lock on the cord. The knot will keep leader from slipping off. Easily removed when done fishing.
Cane poles were used in Europe and in the US before reels. But the rod you have is a Japanese style of fishing called Tenkara . Because it collapsed in itself they make them from bamboo that’s the difference, Awesome!
I always wanted to know about fishing perch with a collapsible pole like that. I thought they're more for fish like sardines. Bring the crappie v perch cook off.
I see people catching like crazy with this setup at Lake Merced, not that I'd eat anything from Lake Merced. Saw a guy a month or two ago with a bag of fish using dough bait.
When I was a kid n new to fishing, we had to engineer our rod n reel cuz we got no allowance cuz it is not an azn thing. A bamboo pole. Take the tab of a coke can which has 2 holes in it. One hole goes into the tip of the bamboo stick and run a spool of line in the other hole. Now you can use physic to throw out your line n it goes far too. Try it out cuz you will not get a UA-cam video of this style. It is the ancient style of the old wise vietnamese fisherman. They brought that technique from the mainland to America. It becomes obsolete after rod n reel became more affordable and it is the cool thing to do.
I would love to see the crappie versus surf perch comparison! I've always heard crappie was not good eating, not sure if it has lots of bones would love to see
Please do a video comparison of a crappie and a surf perch fish fry I've been curious if they taste similar I don't have the resources to try it myself.
I would enjoy a comparison of Crappie and Surf Perch. This would be interesting. Crappie is a clean tasting fish, I have caught a lot in my time and it is delicious!!!
Do the comparison video! I love keeping surf perch and I think they’re really underrated as far as good eating fish go in California. Would love for you to share your opinion on the comparison since I know you’re a big fan of perch too.
You never want your line to be longer than the length of your cane pole. Otherwise it’s too hard to effectively set the hook most times. Also a bobber and split shots is typically 99% of how people fish cane poles. I know American crappie fisherman sometimes don’t but that’s about it.
You can set it up similar to a fly fishing style with no reel. It'll give you the extra 20 more feet and when you do get a bite, just pull the line in by hand. It would be good for someone who doesn't want a reel... Just my 2 cents.
this is how many fishermen fish in Belgium. How I started fishing years ago... :D for me fishing with rod and reel was weird, when I moved to NA :) edit: oh we normally sit on the site of the lake with this in holders, and use bobber on it, so we don't strain our wrists
i dunno but this video reminds me when i was out at pacific grove on my kayak when we saw a guy was fishing on a surfboard and he was out far and im talking out far out with us kayaker.
24 feet?! Jeez! I think you can bonk or whip the fish on the head with that and just let the wave take their unconscious body in! Lol! I know some third world folks use bamboo sticks with a short 6 or 12 inch leader but only in fresh water and maybe 5 or 6 feet. After a year of you using that, you'll be like Popeye the Sailor Man! Thanks for the entertainment buddy!👍

Best time to surf fish is the incoming tide. My dad always said in his living years to fish 2 hours before high tide. I love it. Total Serenity.
I would enjoy a comparison of Crappie and Surf Perch. This would be interesting.
Add in pompano.
I think crappie taste better than surf perch.
If the crappie is made into tacos, even better! Would love to see you compare.

Yikes! Hope you feel better soon to get back out there!
Def wanna see a vid on the taste test between crappie and barred surf perch!!

They're called Tenkara rods, right?
@@charlescoult Tenkara is just one style of pole fishing. It is pretty much old school Japanese fly fishing.
That pole is so sensitive you could probably feel what the fish were thinking! Yep, once the gonads hit the drink it feels 10 degrees colder!!!
I used to use one for fun sometimes for corbina in the surf or opaleye in the harbor in socal. Fun to change it up sometimes just like poke poling

I saw you kayaking for trout today until the bitter cold end!
Outlasted Nick fish, lol saw him quit early and try to bank cast for the trout he marked on the way in.
Nice you discovered tenkara! I got the same brand, a 12ft one to fish for trout and other panfish in freshwater. It’s so fun

Good job and it seems a lot of fun. The best of the series so far as it is my first view of cane pole surf fishing. Thank you and happy holidays.
This is definitely tenkara fishing! The little knitted cord coming out of the tip of the rod is called a “Lillian.”
I grew up in Michigan catching fish with a 20 ft cane pole. You now know how fun it is . Nice vid brother.
Suggestion
Might be awesome to use the cane pole in the Cali rivers for the rainbow trout. Hold the baits in the pools.
I have been doing this for nearly 40 years . I use leadcore line and fly fishing tapered leaders. Use bait or flies. Advantage of using flies is no bait changes.
I go through phases of using a pole in the same way, caught many fish on float off the rocks
24' tenkara. Cool. Just a knot at end of short cord at the tip then a loop with the leader passed through to lock on the cord. The knot will keep leader from slipping off. Easily removed when done fishing.

I can't catch a perch with surf rod and this guy catches with anything he touches lol
Agreed
Omg 😂 I’m dying!!
I watched a 5 second video and caught every species in the ocean..me I hate my life
Wait. What bait was used??
That pole is crazy! That looks like it would be a lot of fun! I think I’ll stick to my regular rods for now.
Great job putting out a ton of videos lately bro I enjoy it!!
Nice video and really nice sun set!
I’m going to bodega bay for perch this weekend. Wish me luck!
Cool concept DHF! Happy Birthday Jesus! 🙏
Look up attaching a line to a tenkara rod. You can use the same technique
I always wanted to know about fishing perch with a collapsible pole like that. I thought they're more for fish like sardines. Bring the crappie v perch cook off.
very nice vid man
Merry Christmas!
DHF, always one degree colder when you go above the waist! 🤣☠️😂
Dude, Adam, that is SO FREAKING COOL!
Very interesting would like to see more of this kind of fishing. Go for it
Great catches man, well done
Just got back from the surf, managed to catch a perch on the 20ft cane pole lol. It was super fun like I thought it'd be. Nice video!
I see people catching like crazy with this setup at Lake Merced, not that I'd eat anything from Lake Merced. Saw a guy a month or two ago with a bag of fish using dough bait.
You and Taku should get some Tenkara rods and go for some river trout
Do a video on the comparison. Good content! Those crappie looked good!

Redefining surf tenkara lol.
Seems like you can catch surf perch with anything! 24 ft "cane pole" is kinda like Tenkara on steroids! Used to use them in Florida to catch crappie.
Damn you!! Now I want to do this so bad!! Awesome stuff🤘🎣
It's originally made from river cane, kin to bamboo, my Grandpa made poles from it and whistles for his beagles
I have a 14 foot cane rod....like to see you catch a 3 lbs bass with yours. Thanks for the memories.
Please do a video comparison of a crappie and a surf perch fish fry I've been curious if they taste similar I don't have the resources to try it myself.
Man its nice there, pretty nasty water up north here!
Really fun in rocks on jetties
DHF: "it was fun"
surf perch : *it was not fun*
I would enjoy a comparison of Crappie and Surf Perch. This would be interesting.
Crappie is a clean tasting fish, I have caught a lot in my time and it is delicious!!!
Interesting video, but like others say i cant catch a perch on a rod and reel and you get them on a stick lol good vibes all the time
Do the comparison video! I love keeping surf perch and I think they’re really underrated as far as good eating fish go in California. Would love for you to share your opinion on the comparison since I know you’re a big fan of perch too.
Finally back to salt water! 😉
Try a bait slinger u can chum the area to an get your baits out
Waders might be an option when cane fishing
Great vid adam
I have one of the Goture 9 ft. 4 piece carbon travel rods and it's great. It's about 70 bucks but it's great quality.

24 feet?? That’s like two full length premium surf casting rods goddamn

I don't think technique is recommend during winter. Summer maybe, but you still have to be careful in getting pulled out into the ocean.
Crappie taste exactly like surf perch, both are soft mushy fish, but excellent tasting!
i dunno but this video reminds me when i was out at pacific grove on my kayak when we saw a guy was fishing on a surfboard and he was out far and im talking out far out with us kayaker.
nice beach. location and time of year?
assuming you are in sourthern Cali? im in Northern Cali and surf has been tough.
tenkara - Daiwa makes some nice plus 20' poles.
Tape a reel to it and use the cord loop as a tip top. Should be able to cast .🐠
In LA cane pole fishing is $5 rod @reel is 30
Trout stream holding water pole your welcome
Hi Adam
Check out Tenkara fishing set up on Google.
Good luck
Richard
Sand no good for slip joints ie chips ends
I use a tankara pole in the sierras
Waiting for the rock fishing with a 24 foot cane pole video :)
Hey diehard u ever thought of getting a stealth kayak
Which Beach are you fishing on Adam?
I took my son 7 times this year to Half moon bay perch fishing, but end up nothing.
Can anyone recommend me the best beach to catch perch? Thanks
Try the north side of ocean beach in sf with 2inch Berkeley gulp on a Carolina rig. Use size 6 bait holder hooks
24 feet?! Jeez! I think you can bonk or whip the fish on the head with that and just let the wave take their unconscious body in! Lol! In England it's called whip fishing
How was your crappie meal?
yes> do a cooking video!
I use a slingshot to get my bait out in the troth
Hey die hard isnt this ep 11? Or is the last episode a different Ep 10?
Look up tenkara fishing to learn how to tie your line to that thread
That's hilarious!
Next is fly fishing for surf perch
I used this pole in japan when I spent 2 months there
I bet you can't catch a fish off the golden gate bridge
Would love to see it but it’s prolly illegal
Try that pole in your kayak
That is a Tenkara Rod, Japanese Fly Fishing.
Sand flea?
Good for jetties
Lmfao how some of us fish in Hawaii 10'-20+ bamboo since for ever and still do it today
Every time I have seen them used they were catching carp in a lake.
It’s just poke poking from the beach 😅
Trying to have my 2 Grandsons to catch Perch
try this out on a jetty!
Cane pole challenge? Give that rod to other youtubers and see who catches the biggest fish.
I kept hearing nude beach but my mind is in the gutter.
