  • There's always a lot of talk about cane poles with people who don't know much about fly fishing or Tenkara so we decided to buy one and try it out to see how it compares to Tenkara fishing. Spoiler alert: The cane pole was heavy and clunky.

Put a bobber about 20-24" above the hook, impale a red wriggler and toss it out into the pond. Now you're cane pole fishing. 😉

I started with cane poll as a kid moved up to a bream buster and then tenkara. If you pay over $70 for a tenkara you got ripped off by the hype. I find myself going back to the lew's bream buster quite often. a good one piece cane is nothing to make fun of especially the big ones on striper fishing.

I have several antique cane poles and I love them.
Mine being over 60 years old are very well made and fitted well.
The best way to store them is standing straight up not leaning against the wall because being a natural material it will bend and remember the bend.
You can straighten the cane/bamboo with a hair dryer heating the bamboo and holding it straight until cool.
Using wax on the cane pole ferrels is a great way to avoid the metal parts from sticking together.
    I enjoyed your video.
I like both ways of fishing but also enjoy spin casting, fly fishing and deep sea fishing.
Your video would be better not being so negative, your young you will learn. 🤠

The only time a cane pole would come in handy is if you are lost in the wilderness after losing all of your gear in the rapids or to a bear and were too many miles from civilization to return in a day. Survival skills learned in the AK wilderness, cane pole/willow branch work, but they usually break, splinter in your hand and you have taken the hem out of your parka for nothing. Good video, have fished both kind of rods and Tenkara makes me happy.

Watched a flyfishing guide's channel recently who had a video about Tenkara and he said it was just cane fishing. Very biased towards traditional flyfishing gear vs tenkara. Someone way back in history cut a bamboo down, stuck a line on it and found it better than whatever they did before that (probably hand line or something similar). From that bamboo cane pole the different practices of tenkara, keiryu, etc, came about. Just like here in the west we had the cane pole and it split into fly fishing, common rod and reel, deep sea, etc.

A cane pole in the hands of someone that knows how to use it can be an elegant and simple tool. They are not intended to cast fly line or flies and and you can see they don't excel at that.
I remember using one piece cane poles with crickets and worms. Up to about 10 feet, they are great fish catchers. For me, they become a bit heavy and unwieldy when they get much past that length.

I've caught trout with self-made tree branch and sapling poles before. I went trout fishing one day in a stock pond and found that my monofilament line on my spinning rod had become fragile and was snapping a lot more than usual. I happened to have some paracord in my backpack that day. I cut a branch off of a tree branch, wrapped the paracord around it and used one of the inner strands to tie the hook. I used zeke sierra gold bait on my hook and caught my bag limit that day with my 5 minute field expedient pole.

Old timer tricks for metal ferrules: rub the piece you’re inserting along the side of your nose to grease it up. If it still gets stuck, hold the rod behind your knees and use your legs to push your forearms apart. This is good to know if you ever use a split cane rod as well.

If you ever fish with a cane pole again for fly fishing they work well for more of a dapping presentation. Personally I tie size 10 palmer style flies in both wet and dry patterns then simply lay them on the water or let the wind carry them and set them down. I also prefer the longest rod I can feasibly use for dapping but a 10 ft rod gets the job done if you just wanna catch a few fish.

You said casting a fly. You're not casting a fly but lobbing them.
In my experience in curiously trying out just the fly because of the front facing hackle, I found out that at least where I trout fish in the Ozark's, trout hammer them. in the lower currents where they like to feed. Now, I have over 700 flys...(experience). So, after that experience I bout about 50 different type of Tenkara flies. The Black Shinpuru this week I caught 5-trout 13-16" , 2 hours on that one fly alone using Tight Line Euro Nymphing with my 22' built leader ,10'.5" Moonshine Epiphany with Redington Tilt. That is a very well balanced combination using all 3-one once weights. But, since I have 19 fly rods...(experience), 3wt-8wt...(experience) and use all of them regularly bass, bluegill and trout, (I'm retired and that's pretty much all I do) I find that traditional fly fishing is real fly casting fishing and there is way more skill involved with the equipment and technique. Than Tenkara and Euro lobbing a fly fishing. I do a lot of French Euro Nymphing and found it to be tediously boring but though slightly MORE PRODUCTIVE because the drag a fly line creates, yet, the main emphasis is catching trout since what else does those 2 types of lobbing a fly can do. Sort of like hunting deer with a bow rather than a rife which I've done much of both too. There isn't anything special thinking that Euro Nymphing and Tenkra is big deal. It's a lazy mans type of fishing that you think your in the category of traditional FF. So, stop griping about what we think and calling us snobs. Then you're going to get a reaction. Just do what you do and keep you mind on that rather than what we are all supposedly thinking when most are not.
Right!! Who is saying we can't get along???

The only people you will see with a 'sectional bamboo pole' are yankee tourists and small children who's grandmoma bought them a pole. It looked like you had serious failure of the light metal joints on your pole. A 10 to 12 foot one piece bamboo pole can take a lot of whipping back and forth all day for months. Second You can not tie line straght to the tip of Bamboo poles, I was suprised the even smallish fish you caught didn't break off the tip. Normally you start about 1/3 the way down the pole and tie your line then make a series of 'doubled half hitches' every 10 inches or so and finally run the line through an eye previously tied to the tip or a doubled wrap of black electrical tape at the tip. Your line should be roughly a foot shorter than the pole and wrap another circle of black electriacl tape there as a hook keeper
We have "tenkara style" fished with bamboo poles for all 65 years of my life with traditional dry flys and poppers sold beside all the other tackle in bait stores and gas stations , A "beetle Spin" works great too. Tapered leader meant for fly fishing and even floating fly line itself, also works well on a Bamboo pole. Lew's sticks and Bream Busters can collaspe for carry but are too whippy for a lot of folks down here . Once you learn to fish with a light weight one piece Bamboo pole you'll find the stiffer rigged pole transmits every twitch and wiggle . We regularly catch half pound to full pound panfish in the south and the occasional 4 to 5 pound bass on Bamboo poles. Fit yourself with a proper one piece cane pole rig next time, go for larger fish, and tell us about the time you have.

that was a bad set up for that cane pole and a unfair comparison. They sell the 10ft version 2 piece that is way more sturdy and a personally i wrap the line around pole down to the split for added strength incase I do get bigger game. I feel as if you were implying the cane pole was inferior, and all though there are also telescoping cane poles the tenkara rod is a neat rig, but me personally I enjoy the cane pole better but i also do fish with a Cuban yo-yo. (I do have regular rods for small and big water) but I enjoy fishing with my simple yet effective rigs. but hey thats just me. AND lastly i have a supper compact rig the K Bar BackPack Kaster which is just a bad ass version of a hobo hand reel.

We weren't trying to diminish the cane pole at all just doing an honest comparison and showing how different the two are. We have heard people say that Tenkara is just cane pole fishing and we had to find out for ourselves that that just isn't the case. Im sure cane poles have their place, but for fishing small streams it just isn't great.

What you need is a homemade cane rod that isn't one of those three piece ones. A good 10 foot straight piece of bamboo with a little love put into it will be the best damn fishing rod you ever held

Not all cane or synthetic poles are equal.

I like how diplomatic you were about the cane pole, but let's be honest. It's a piece of crap!

haha ya i was trying to give an honest review and look for the good aspects of the cane pole. we aren't here to bash anybody or anything but just have a good time! Will i use the cane pole again though? haha

@@driftstone i get why you would say what you did, but do keep in mind that cane poles are not fly fishing rods. they are meant to sit on a pier with a worm and snag the panfish that hide under said pier, or even from a boat or the shore. they performed poorly here because they were being used for a purpose they are not optimised for, is my point. so i think you meant "its a piece of crap at fly fishing", which is accurate XD

@@frogbear02 haha you're right. I was just trying to be funny. I can totally see how well that would work from a pier. I used to fish from piers in the ocean when I was a kid.
