If Gen 2’s ur favorite, I highly recommend playing “Crystal Clear”. Its basically a open world version of Crystal with way more customization options and tons of extra side missions and cutscenes that aren’t in the original game. Perfect blend of nostalgia and new content

Pokémon Fool’s Gold is also a pretty fun one. It’s like if everything was randomized, except planned out. Like the types of everything are different, the encounters are different, and the sprites of all the Pokémon have been changed; you really just have to relearn the game. On top of that, it has a lengthy post game that’s genuinely challenging.

Its VERY interesting that this game is considered neon colorful to you and others, because if you play the game on original hardware (a gameboy with at best a front light) its just NORMALLY colorful. The bright colors I think are suppose to stand out more because of how the game was originally seen for most kids: in the back of the car reflecting the setting sun, or under the light in a living room.

Seeing the Ken Sugimori art splashed throughout the video (which I believe all came from GSC era TCG sets) only reaffirmed part of my love for this generation - the artwork for these games was truly just so beautiful. It feels retro and nostalgic, but also real and believable too. It really feels like it came from inside the game, which I can’t say I feel looking at the artwork for other games in the series anymore

Pokémon Crystal was my first handheld game as well as the first game that I didn't have to share with siblings. Before my battery died in my copy many years ago, I had over 900 hours on just the last save I had. So many beautiful memories have been given to me by this game and I wouldn't trade them for anything. I still listen to tracks like National Park and Cherrygrove City unironically all the time!

    • @ahums16
      @ahums16 Рік тому

Definitely check out Crystal Clear then! Where you know Crystal like the back of your hand, it'll be such a lovely treat. I don't play mods or hacks, and this was an exception.
      ~ all 251 Pokémon are obtainable in-game, even having a trade-back npc.
~ all 251 Pokémon have their own overworld sprites; one can walk behind you and you can interact!
~ spawn in any town you choose, customizable main character; whichever region you spawn in effects if you see Red or Gold on Mt. Silver.
~ Difficulty scales with you, and you can rechallenge gyms as many times as you wish
~ Want to see all Pokémon as shiny? There's a toggle for it.
~ Want to read the Pokédex without catching them all? There's a toggle for that.
~ Choose what music you hear for battles, including Gen 3 renditions and a lot more music!

Gen 2 was when Pokémania was at its absolute peak.
It's the biggest hype we'll probably ever witness for a franchise.
I mean Pokémon was larger than life, it was everywhere and if you hadn't lived to see and experience it, you can never ever begin to even imagine the sheer madness that it was.

I grew up watching my brother play Pokémon red and as I only understood half of it besides the base principles of it, it was always a beautiful mystery to me. Where the mew secrets and diary entries on cinobar island left me fearful and kept me in awe, I always felt like these small children npc within the game, waiting for their time to come, to start their own journey. And man oh man did I love my journey as the next gen of trainers. Typhlosion is for ever my all time favorite Pokémon and whereas Kanto feels like home, Johto felt like my oyster. Beating my own journey to then come back home and become champion of the region I grew up with…. That always felt like the completed adventure.

Replaying as an almost 30 year old guy, the game has retained much of its charm. I think gen 2 has the best scenery and music. It's quick and responsive, qualities that the newer generations lack. Youre just in the world doing your own thing. No odd cutscenes or lengthy hand holding. I think the best part, although unfortunately it is not able to be replicated today, is that when you were young, you were discovering the entire Johto region with just you and your friends. You couldn't wait to show your friends new pokemon or exchange tips and learn new secrets. Without the Internet, vlogs, streamers, etc., spoiling or telling you where all the cool secret stuff is, the game maintained a very social and adventurous vibe. No gaming experience will ever top unknowingly travelling back to Kanto! But wait, finding Red at the top of Mt. Silver would just do that! Amazing memories from an amazing game. God bless the original creators, programmers, and composers.

Always thought gen 2 was the best but back then when I used to say it was my favorite I was labeled a “hipster.” People liked gen 3 or the latest release at the time. People just didn’t realize how much gen 2 innovated and brought to the table, as well as the last of the cool sprite designs. Day and night cycle, breeding, gender, baby Pokémon, holding items, seeing your exp, friendship evolutions, poke gear, seeing if you’ve already caught a Pokémon by the icon, having a male or female protagonist, having a story after the main game, dark type and steel type. All these were introduced in this generation.

@Aztrosist: Amazing & very detailed overview of my too favorite generation of pokèmon. So much of johto rings true as to why pokèmon is still here imo. The *only minor* detail on the design segment of the video that would've added a nice quantity all in all was that Gold & Silver had separate sprite concept art of each & every single pokèmon between the versions.
Other than that, nailed the reason why that there will never be a better generation to me than gold, silver and crystal!

I love the first 3 installments to death! It's literally my childhood. No friends, no life, just Pokemon!
My Yellow Gameboy Color was my best friend in my childhood.

Gen 2 is the best for sure. Sadly, I never played Crystal but if I were to replay it, that would be my choice.
Sadly, I will never have that much time to spare again until I'm retired, and even then, I'm not so sure.

A little thing I wanted to point out about the music - Junichi Masuda composed the music for RBY, but he actually worked on the soundtrack for GSC in tandem with Go Ichinose. Both of them are incredibly talented composers and I honestly can’t imagine anyone else doing a better job on the music. Maybe it’s largely because of the nostalgia, but the soundtrack from Pokémon gen 2 is still one of my favorites after all these years.

Great vid - I hope you'll cover all the Gens!
You forgot to mention one of my favourite parts of Gen II - climbing to the summit of Mt. Silver to find Red's ominous and unmistakable sprite staring out over the Johto landscape. A truly 'holy shit' moment as a kid, especially after spending so much time in Gen I, to find the protag (that you as the player effectively embodied in previous years) as the narrative end boss.
As much as I love Gen II, I would only really play HG/SS now for replayability. The levelling curve in the originals holds it back, which is not as present in Gen III.

i mean, the whole red thing is kinda ruined by how poorly designed the actual fight is, the only reason anyone considers him difficult is because his team is overlevelled as fuck

The first video game that I ever played was Pokemon Crystal, emulated on a PC from the early 2000's, so Gen 2 will always have a place in my heart. Going back to play the old games, as well as the remakes, you find that there are so many issues in the game that you sort of ignore as a kid. These days, I would say that BW/BW2 are the most well made Pokemon games, just because of the sheer amount of effort put into the game. It's something that really shows.
