I don't think I've seen Brann nervous before. Until he started talking about his first live broadcast tv performance. Like it all came back to him haha
Brann is a god, period. End of discussion. Not because his skill, but because of his humility. He went through unimaginable pains in his youth. Being mistreated, followed by the suicide of his only solace, his sister. But look at him, positive, excited, energetic and flowing. Its really impressive and I admire it. Hopefully we all do.
Why wasn't Opeth included in this episode of Metal Evolution? One of the most important prog metal bands the last 20 years and by 2010 they were pretty huge!
@@bemersonbakebarmen Being a Jazz fusion fan also, I say SM went down that road more than Prog during their many incarnations. Sounds like the Canterbury scene is to your liking also ! : )
@@thathandleistakentrythisonehe looks the exact same today, its like he just doesn't age, I mean look at his bandmates! They look like they're as old as black sabbath!
awesome drummer , musician... he has influenced so many in just his short career (he's still young) and I am sure he will continue to influence many more in the future as he gets even better.. as he is and will be recognized with the greats for a long time to come..
The thing about Brann is when asked what the climate was like when Mastodon formed in 1999, he said: "As far as metal was concerned, I think it was still kind of a bad word. Like, grunge was still sort of popular, but it had been completely watered-down and was suffering from the same thing that hair metal was suffering from in the late '80s". One thing was that nu-metal was huge in 1999 with bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit, Deftones, Coal Chamber, etc. Heck, 1999 was the year of the disastrous Woodstock '99 festival. An entire episode even focused on that genre.
But you could make the argument that those bands weren't necessarily metal. The biggest band that was without a doubt metal was Pantera and even Metallica was more of a hard rock band. Besides that the traditional metal headliners were less popular and playing smaller venues at the time. All of the interesting things happening in Metal at the time were in the underground i.e. Mastodon, Today is the Day, Lamb of God, Dillinger, Converge and Meshuggah
Thanks for the upload Sam and the Banger family! Any chance that you will upload the extended interview with Billy Gould at some point? The man is my bass-playing hero and I'd love to see it all! :)
Yes is 100% the best band to exist. Every band thats good or pushing boundaries today is influenced by them. Also Cynic which he mentioned too is like the yes of metal
"Giant men with giant beards who like to be super drunk all day long and ride around on freight trains.." He described me, except I don't have a beard..
Brann's awesome and he has great taste in music. Can play the drums too, he's up there in terms of modern players. It took me a while but album by album these guys have really grown on me.
Such a great interview brann is such a cool guy
Great interview! Mastodon blew me away the first time I saw them, particularly with Brann's drumming. Truly memorising to watch.
memorising??
W-O-W. Brann mentioning Death, Cynic and Atheist.
G. Reis I know it was pretty cool especially Atheist. They don't get enough love.
DrunkNikolai666 Atheist's drumming is such an obvious influence to Brann
Dude he was in Lethargy and Today is the Day
Gus Machine fuck yeah, and Human Remains. All of those bands absolutely floored me then and still do.
Human remains is highly influential.

Mastodon is really an awesome band

Cool 😎
Seeing the interview that was uploaded a good month ago, I love how both of them didn't seem to age visually at all
What a coincidence. Yesterday I rewatched prog metal episode and, boom, full interview with Brann. O.o
He is an underrated drummer imho.

Awesome. Thank you, Banger TV.
Would've loved to hear him talk about Rush a little more. I would assume that Neil influenced him somewhat.
PHIL COLLINS!

Never thought about hearing Genesis side to side with Death among someone's influences x'D But yeah, that makes sense! x')
Can't believe he still got one of those old tv's. 😅
Well, it was 7 years ago now. :-)
which is pretty scary

Adorable, fantastic drummer and singer. Mr. Dailor is one of my faves.
It's really funny how Sam says they're ascending in 2010. 8 years later that seems like an understatement.
early bill bruford with Yes and King Crimson...that's drummin'

WOHAR! What a beast of a TV
Yes, Genesis, King Crimson & Pink Floyd.
The Big Four of Britsh Prog. You cant be more standard than that.
Brann rules. and that corgi reaper shirt hahaha
Thanks for the upload Sam and the Banger family!

The term prog has not been used since 1987 so yeah
Can u elaborate?
Very cool!
"Giant men with giant beards who like to be super drunk all day long and ride around on freight trains.."
He described me, except I don't have a beard..
what I want to know is, what strain they smoke to create such masterpiece. I demand to know
phil collins- one of the more underrated drummers!!!
underrated?, he is frequently on top drummer lists and considered by many as one of the greatest drummers of all time
I should have elaborated- I should of said to the layman he is underrated- usually thought of as an 80s and early 90s popstar and nothing else...
Kevin P Well he's one of the greatest! But yes, he's most known as singer.
Kevin P I agree. Check out his work with band Brand X
such a shame Phill can't play anymore.. :'/
Brann's awesome and he has great taste in music. Can play the drums too, he's up there in terms of modern players. It took me a while but album by album these guys have really grown on me.
yep, human remains definitely raised the bar with that tiny little ep
and gorguts ripped it off
I want that shirt so bad
lol Brann's shirt
He sounds a bit like Jonathan Davis when he talks haha.
Rush is not anywhere near progressive as mastodon
kalvin that isn’t true at all lol. Rush is one of the progressive titans.
Tyler Jacobson I agree but Mastodon surpasses them with crack the skye
Love Sam but he is pretty self centred like a college student presenter.
haha wonder how you feel about people ya hate...
Jimi Quackers It's his opinion it's not hate.
Generic Name
how generic of you...
mushroomleg well he has limited time most likely, so he's really trying to get through all the material he has prepared.
The fuck are you on about?
the interview is fine
1st
All the stuff that was the foundation of Prog Metal to come, and the experimental :).
