I've been a member of the Hare Krishna community for 4 years now - and vegan for 10! I can very happily say that in the 4 years I've been going to my local temple there's been a big move from veggie to vegan. For example: all of the public events are vegan, we have vegan all you can eat nights, free vegan food for students/homeless, yoga festivals with vegan meals - the other festivals/events which are more religious ones and are attended by mostly Indian families are usually not vegan because milk and dairy are very much a part of Indian culture and it's written in the scriptures about the relationship to cows (ahimsa milk etc). Many of the western Hare Krishna monks and community members have made the switch to vegan over the past few years. Modern times are very different to ancient India - if non violence is your motto then VEGAN is the only way! Hoping more of the community joins us in the coming years :)
I was scrolling the comments section and found your comment among all of these negative and critical ones. My husband and I are both vegan and are members of the Vaishnava community. It's refreshing to hear from someone who understands both aspects of what was expressed in this video. The devotees were very respectful and took time to answer the vegan interviewer's questions,. but their one possible mistake is not realizing they are speaking to an atheistic person. The interviewer was also respectful and kind. There's no need for criticism on either side. .
Yes I was born into a Hare Krishna family so born as a lacto vegetarian, and my mum dad and siblings were the same. Most of us are vegan now. I've been vegan for 5yrs. Coz I Honestly didn't realise baby calves died 4 milk. I grew up on a Hare Krishna dairy farm and they never sold or killed any cows, bulls or calves. The animals were treated amazingly, and the farm was self sufficient.. The bulls would plough the veggie fields, and if any cow would die naturally they'd use the skin to make things. It was pretty cool that I grew up to see that. And I never questioned milk as a cruel product as all the cows were friendly, happy and acted like pets to all the residents. But when I learnt about commercial farming.. I couldn't beleive the dairy industry rough housed the cows, shoved them along and beat them and killed the babies. I was like dude WTF. So I became vegan. Took me a while as I was conditioned and addicted to cheese. But yeah I realised all dairy u buy is cruelty and even in India the land of sacred cows they've lost the traditions of worshipping the cows as goddesses and they just toss the calves on the street coz they're too pussy to kill them. The ancient scenarios described in the scriptures about true cow worship, isn't being practiced. Not even by most Hindus so it's better just to eliminate dairy and avoid the cruelty.
"I appreciate the ideology but it's so hypothetical"..... Wait.. didn't you just say that torturing a cow for milk is good for the cow because the cow's "soul" gets more benefit in the next "destination". Erm... Ok right I see, damn... well maybe we need to start doing the same to our fellow human mothers so that they benefit too in the "spiritual world!"

Some monks are fake. Monks are supposed to live simple lives. In India, the monks who live in mountains and go for exile thrive on a completely vegan (fruit) diet.
He can't see the connection! Krishna ji loves cows, cows are not treated well in the dairy industry, they are taking milk from the dairy industry and offering to Krishna ji/his devotees (in Govinda restaurants)! Krishna ji will certainly be sad! :(
I was waiting to hear what you would come up with regarding this being as I used to be a Hare Krishna myself. I guess the arguments they give were what I would expect, though I was surprised to hear them justifying using milk sourced from violent modern industry. Krishna the god was of a time when the cows were loved and treated as part of the family, a different time totally, although still there are some small goshalas, where cows live and are both milked and worshipped simultaneously, according to the ways of old in India and elsewhere. But as for the industries of now, Krishna would never accept contributing in any way to the killing of his beloved cows, so the Hare Krishna's need to be transparent about this and udate their perspectives.
You're getting smoother hancock, you really had their gears working to try and justify their positions, but I still appreciate that they are considering animals more than most.
It's difficult to watch their justifications. I was raised with the Gita and Ramayan. There is no way the dairy industry is compatible with ahimsa/non violence. We are taught that the highest ideal of Shri Krishna's life is love and compassion towards other humans, animals and nature. When unrighteousness reigns, like the dairy and meat industry, it's up to us to stand up to such an evil and not partake in it. Im not a monk, just a girl who is vegan because I was taught about Shri Krishna's love. I'm heartbroken by these apparent monks. Thank you for your activism. A vegan atheist is far more godly than a non vegan monk.
@Conan One needs to understand how highly esteemed the monks are, to us. When leading hundreds of people, it's about the collective spiritual journey. That's why it's even more important for them to adopt veganism to fit their narrative of ahimsa and non violence. Respectfully, do the research into veganism and the environment before commenting. I'm just a believer in non violence as taught by my religion. Veganism is the path of non violence
We are speaking about direct harm. We all have to live so there is always going to be some level of harm to animals. But paying someone to slit an animals throat for food is not necessary
I was in charge of a venue where these hare krishna guys wanted to do this kind of a thing. Since we were able to make the venue available, they were very thankful, and one of the them got me indian sweets made out of "their" cows' milk. When I told him I was vegan, and wouldn't consume that, he got offended. He tried to explain that they don't treat their cows like the dairy industry does, and that they let the cows live out their natural lives, but wouldn't see my point of the cows not belonging to us to use for their body secretions. He left very angry for someone who preaches peace and non violence.

14.45 As an Indian Hindu I can totally understand the thought process of this Monks , as in India cows are treated as holy beings/ equal to mother as we consume it's products since ages & , it's said Lord Krishna also consumed dairy (no cruelty of whatsoever form is n was done , treated as family members, etc. ) ..... ( today also my n my friends relatives in countryside are farmers n they own cows n buffalows n they treat them just as their family member n no less than that , they r taken care of their whole life till they die naturally , as it is the case in most of India although not 100% , some poor farmer do tend to sell them ) ..... HENCE. , dairy is not considered as cruel n it's linked to spirituality , BUT IMO especially in the west , we all know how horrible is the dairy industry , Lord Krishna would also won't like dairy of such horror of recent times . I think Veganism is the best option of this time. ( Btw I personally Really respect , admire u all vegan activist ,great work u r doing , also the Monks too admired ur cause , ur work , subscribe everyone I find ) .

Bhagavad gita actually hints to vegan food prasadam offering . BG chapter 9 verse 26 : " If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit or water, I will accept it." Here sri bhagavab or in the hare krishna translation sri krsna does not mention dairy as an offering.
Good on you for taking on this mission impossible :D At least it's a very good example of how impossible it seems to be to discuss morals with religious people :)
I'm not religious... but wouldn't it be hilarious if people met their god at the gates of heaven only for god to say: "wtf were you doing eating my animals!? I constantly sent you signals to stop hurting my animals for your selfish pleasure and you ignored them.... to hell with you!"
Muslims say that Allah created animals just for the meat for the humans and that the animals are very happy to be killed by believers. Only by believers because a animal is not happy if he will be killed in a not halal manner. So animals are a gift by Allah and Allah will be angry with a vegan, because he is not grateful to Allah. My discussion with a muslim.

As an ex-hare krishna, this is a difficult conversation I have with my Hare Krishna friends and family often. Unfortunately they almost always immediately end the conversation without engaging at all.
In the past our relationship with cows and other milk animals was based more on symbiosis, they were not locked in cages, and were having decent existence. I respect veganism, I have stopped eating meat, but in nature existence is everything, all good and bad emotions exist just to keep you alive. A cow produce much more milk than the calf need, you can impregnate a cow with only female spermatozoids so that you wont have unneeded males, you can have farms where cows go outside, as some farm here practice even today. My point is you can have milk with much less suffering than what you have in nature, and that the relationship with cows can be very good. Also artificial insemination is not a rape, rape exist in humans, it is the panic of a woman to have the baby of a unwanted male who wont help with raising that kid, cows dont have this in they psyhology, sticking your hand for a short time in the cow wont provide even a 1% of the panic that will unfold in raping a human... Sometimes veganism is indeed something like a religion, true nature works in a different way, you have to suffer a little bit in order to exist, nothing in nature is 100% "suffer free", that is the truth... If you have a relationship with an animal species that is more love and less suffering than the average level in nature, then how exactly it is bad? Also lets be realists, if everyone stop consuming milk then what will happen with cows? How many cows there will be? They cant live in nature and they are expensive pets, reality is that you will have just few in the zoos and few other places, 99.99% of cow population will go extinct. Does the cows will be "happy" with that scenario?
I’m a Indian and a proud vegan🕉 Its not right to say that a chicken deserves to live but a cow doesn’t every living being wants to live even if they don’t lactate
Vegetarianism is good when done on an individual or local level. Like in Indian villages where farmers have a cow or two just for some milk and they are pretty much free to go around anywhere. The industrial dairy farming seen across the world now, makes vegetarian lifestyle tough because of the contradiction.

Would really like to see people that come across as receptive, once in a while. I start to lose my mind when I hear their “reasoning.” The level of disconnection is insanity-inducing.
I'm a vegan and have a Hindu background as well. It's obviously clear that the modern dairy industry is absolutely cruel in all aspects which is why I don't support it. However, in many rural areas of India, cows are like pets, and the family only drinks the milk of their own cow. The cows aren't artificially inseminated and when the calf is born, it is allowed to take all the milk it needs. Only then does the family drink the remaining milk. While some may say it's exploitative, it's really a symbiotic relationship where the cows are showered with love and care like a family member in return for the last bit of it's milk. If that excess milk isn't milked, the cows are usually in pain. Btw love your work and activism.
They have such a beautiful core belief. My uncle is Buddhist. It really is a beautiful way to live. It's just sad that they don't see the hypocrisy in consuming Dairy. People love to hear good news about their bad habits.

When dealing with these people with such beliefs. I think telling them the bad implications to our health of consuming milk, is highly needed to pursuade them
Where’s the father cow? Serious question: if cows were allowed to reproduce naturally and live together, would make cows stay with the females and show any interest in their own calves?

I'm a Hare Krishna, actually my whole family is. And most of us have turned vegan (or are leaning that way) prior to being lacto vegetarian.. Bcoz of the calf deaths & torture dairy cow's go thru. We live inline with that "selflessness" the monk talk of. It was a tradition in Hinduism to worship cows & use milk as a sacred magical product. Back thousands of yrs ago Hindu scriptures wrote about cows being massaged with expensive oils, worshipped, wearing gold necklaces & treated like royalty. Never killed, never beaten. It was the highest sin to be cruel to a cow as they were seen as goddesses of the earth. But these days the culture is not like that. Not even in India. They just use and abuse them for their milk. So like all cultures. I think Hare Krishna and Hindus need a reform of their misconceptions about milk instead of turning a blind eye and pretending it's still like the good old scriptural days..
Most of the so called religious folks do it because they want heaven or something similar. During the times of Krishna, cows were supposed to be treated really well, allowed to roam in grasslands. Yes,they did milk cows but I believe it was done with good intent . But,but in this current world until and unless we totally avoid animal products someone will always hide behind "humane __________" but will be ultimately tortured. Krishna consciousness folks is atleast realising being a vegetarian. Some religion treat like eating meat is a praise worthy feature! But at the end it's self realisation, but people compare those times, values people held those time and in that place to this current world. This current world is different.
Vedic Sanatan Dharma believers used to believe total vegan long time back. But they really indulged into scriptures where even deities like Krishna used diary. That brought some sort of adherence to milk, cheese

Slowly happening ^___^
fantastic bro, that sounds like an excellent community.
That's great!

Great conversations. I enjoyed this video 👍🏻
@Conan I feel as if you will grasp at straws, at this point. As stated above, I am the same religion as the monks. Ok then, buh bye!

HENCE. , dairy is not considered as cruel n it's linked to spirituality ,

"We just do our best! Unless there's cheese involved. Then fuck the cows cos mmm cheese" that's like totally super spiritual 🙏

You gave them something to think about. :)
