just because his swing is different, doesn't mean it isn't pretty. I enjoy watching his swing, it's actually awesome imo. Most everybody else's swing looks boring to watch
Consistent in hitting fairways and giving himself opportunities yes, does he always make the most of them? No. No one does. Zach Johnson being consistent shooting 70 or 71 is a disappointment to him a lot of the time I'm sure. No one is super consistent the most consistent player ever was Tiger. Had the longest consecutive tournament without a missed cut record, a win record that was outrageous (like 40% against a hundred other people?!?!) And he didn't play even close to the same as these guys consistency is an odd thing to try and pinpoint in this game. Tiger has all the records to show he is consistent but he hits more shots bad than most people on tour doing it outside of 2000-2003.
I was there that day, my wife won tickets on the radio it was my first pga tour event and he goes and does something like this....58 really?! It was an honor to watch that back nine Jim!
You know, I'd never seen this round till just now (though I'd heard about it of course) but he made some unbelievable long putts and barely misses a few others. He almost shot 55 or 56. What a stellar round of golf.
Crazy that that 58 had a lip out from 6 feet and a almost straight 10 footer he missed. Furyk is the only player with 2 sub 60 rounds on tour. And his 59 had a bogey in it!
I played the Florida mini-tours in the early 90s, and also earned a spot in the '93 PGA tour qualifying school. I shot 58 in a practice round. It was truly amazing. I got a spiritual/mental feeling with the putter that day, that I never got again. My technique was perfect, and my stroke was so smooth and balanced. I made 2 eagles and 8 birdies. I never putted like that again. It was a very interesting once in a lifetime experience. Furyk was so great to shoot 58 on tour. He will greatly enjoy that the rest of his life.
Best I have ever done is shoot 6 under for 12 holes. Had to walk in then because of the rain. Playing off scratch at the time! Bloody rain! Hard track too!
What an incredible day for Jim & golf! It’s so crazy to think he truly could have shot a 56 or 57 heck even a 55. Just mind boggling. I’ll always remember watching this round unfold!
Everybody should aspire to play like this man. We might not get the same results but it's a thing of beauty watching this man hit the fairway and attack the pin. Simple and effective.
Funnily enough this is the only pga tour event I’ve ever been to. Wish I had started following him earlier in the day but watched his back nine. Front nine was even more incredible. Wish there was footage
On one accasion I shot 17 under my 27 handicap and felt mentally, that I could have done anything on the course that day, playing many levels above my capability. Jim has shown too, how much the game is "mental", by literally having the ball on a string and playing "outside himself". We golfers all experience this at one stage and it is fascinating as to why this appears not to repeat itself on the next immediate game. Unless your name is Tiger.
i was in the same graduating high school class...i tried out for the high school golf team and he was shooting 6 under par at Lancaster Country Club back then! he is a great guy and glad he got the record. Go Jim from Mary "Moose"!
I had the pleasure of walking Colonial with Mr. Furyk, years back, while being a caddy for an AM during pro/am. One of the nicest guys on the tour for sure.
As a 12 handicapper once I shot 34 front nine and 42 back nine. That front nine was incredible, nothing went wrong, putts were just going in from every angle. It felt euphoric.
With the dedication, training, equipment and better course surfaces these days, and just the amount of people who play golf now, I'm surprised we don't see it more often now. Amazing to think that Johnny Miller in the 1970s still stands as one of the most consistent low 60s scorers ever.
It just proves how mental the game is. You can have the perfect swing, best equipment, hit it the longest etc., but if you aren’t 100% locked in mentally you will let something slip, guaranteed.

Here's the deal. Furyk shot a 12 under par 58 on a par 70 course. Awesome. Some here say not awesome because a few others have gone 13 under on a par 72 course. Ok. Let's just say the course designers hypothetically said two of those par 4's Were really difficult enough to be par 5's and then the PGA suits made them par 5's. Now they tell Furyk, hey, those two birdies you made were really eagles and you really shot a 14 under 58. Furyk without changing anything he did just became awesome to those that thought 12 under was not. Case closed.
