I just apply contact cement to the edges, pinch together, then glue to the bodysuit. Pinching the edges helps achieve the curve of the muscles and doesnt pull on the body suit too bad.
I'm going to be making my son's muscle suit for under the Cowardly Lion costume that he's wearing for the school musical. I'm not trying to make him buff necessarily, just bulking him up to make the costume look better. Any suggestions for this type of muscle suit? Any recommendations for the compression clothing? I'm trying to keep him as cool as possible, too. This video is going to be super helpful...thanks!
I think you can still apply the techniques used in my videos for this, but not necessarily focus as much on making the muscles look nice. For example instead of doing individual abs, you could just add a slab of foam there. It depends on the overall shape you're going for with bulking him up, but I would probably focus on the shoulders/chest and hips for a general cat look. Add more to the stomach for a more rotund look. I would try to go for the least amount of added foam as possible to keep it cool, but that'll just take some test fitting to see what more needs added where. For compression clothing, I just go with whatever is cheap on amazon personally. I think DrSkin and TSLA are some brands I've used, but they all seem pretty similar. I hope that helps!
Do you need to wash this before wearing it for the first time? Like new clothes that have that packing spray they use to prevent wrinkles during shipping? Or if there's any other type of industrial byproduct, from the process of making the foam in the first place. And then how do you wash it after spending a whole weekend at a comic book convention?
Was just wondering, if it would have been possible to have had the second 1" foam under the big lower arm piece, so you had the bulk but flowed a bit smoother, instead of gluing it on top. I hope that made sense
I actually ended up not gluing foam together for the final piece and just used the thinner foam so it flowed into my wrist a bit better. I think your suggestion would work as well though! I know I've seen people who glue the muscles down without carving frequently glue an extra block of foam under the pec to give it more volume at the bottom.
One issue I always have with using a dremel on upholstery foam is my dremel either chips too much off or the dremel head gets stuck in the foam itself. Do you have any tips how to stop this from happening?
It definitely takes some practice. I try to barely let the dremel touch the surface of the foam because it takes no pressure for it to start removing material. Instead I rest a finger of the hand I'm holding the dremel with on the foam so that there's still contact being made and I can stabilize the angle without necessarily applying pressure with the dremel itself if that make sense. I definitely had instances starting out where I would apply pressure and the dremel would get sucked into the foam and unraveling it would be a whole ordeal.

Wow am I late to this party but you could always bind or tape the breast to support and redistribute mass then use thinner foam with an aim to give shape, rather than bulk. Possibly carving the underside to give you more room might be helpful to you, depending on how much you have going on there, or you could always go full blown steroidal on surrounding musculature...
