Very Rare! Antonov An-70 Taking Off from Leipzig/Halle Airport (Germany)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 чер 2024
- Other than its 8 paired, coaxially mounted, contra-rotating propellers, this Antonov An-70 may not look like much, but it's surely a highlight on any airport around the world, because up to now (September 2015) only 2 of these were ever built!
I admit I kind of celebrate it all a bit in this video, but a rarity like this surely deserves that ;)
First conceptional work for the An-70 dates back to the 1970's and the type's first flight took place in 1994. Since then, the project suffered from the same problems as many in the former Eastern Bloc did in the aftermath of the breakdown of the Soviet Union: political quarrels, lack of money and a market that was dominated by players, who had the advantage of knowing this market far better. But with airplanes like their An-74, An-124 and An-225, Antonov have proven to the world that they know how to build brilliant transport aircraft and with types like the An-178 and the An-70 they seem to be ready for all sorts of markets.
The An-70's party piece is easy to recognize, it's its engines with their contra-rotating pairs of propellers of course! This detail gives it an impressive top speed of 421 knots (780kmph/485mph) and a cruise speed of 405 knots (750kmph/466mph) and all that with reduced fuel consumption and noise! But they didn't stop there. Its power combined with a highly sophisticated wing structure gives the An-70 STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) capabilities, which you can see in the end of the video, when I expected it to appear behind the hangar still rolling, when it was in fact high above it already!
Apart from its registration UR-EXA, there's not such a lot information available about the aircraft shown here. Obviously it is the first upgraded An-70, but other than that I can only say that it can be seen here, parking at and taking off from Leipzig/Halle airport (LEJ/EDDP), namely its northern runway 08L/26R.
Special thanks go to πlot.Tv (tinyurl.com/gt2js6y) who called my attention to the An-70's visit, which I had most probably missed otherwise!

*PLEASE READ BEFORE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE MISSING LIFT-OFF:*
The An-70 has lifted off far earlier than any other plane I've seen there before or since and from where I was shooting, that was behind a hangar, so had I not cut out this part, all you'd have seen was a grey, featureless building. I hope you enjoy(ed) watching this video anyway.
... and if you absolutely need to see the lift-off, here it is: ua-cam.com/video/9U7WCPZIw2s/v-deo.html 😉
Thanks a lot. It was awsome.

This ANTONOV company deserves all the awards of transport aviation! I had never seen so many beautiful freighters, imposing as the Antonov aircraft! Both the oldest and this ninth wonder that turns out to be the AN 225. I'm in love with this An-70 and I loved the blue propellers..my favorite color !!
Stanley, I was lucky enough to go up in an An2 for a pesticide flight in Hungary, even got a little stick time as the pilot is a relative.. surprisingly light on the controls as long as your speed is in check, thing felt solid as a bridge, an performed it's task effortlessly.. even with fully loaded hoppers, no change in handling, pilot simply trimmed it out a bit, but the weight was mostly in the wing box, years of safe carefree operation.. maintenance is a cinch as long as you stay on top, but a very simple rugged well designed bird..
The glory of "Antonov" remained in the past - in the USSR. During 30 years of independence of Ukraine "Antonov" has built one single transport aircraft An-178, which exists in a single copy.
By the way, the propellers of the An-70 aircraft, which you liked so much, were made in Russia.
AERO Susanin Hahahaha hahahaha 😂😂 the Ukrainians should give thanks 🙏 to the nazis/terrorists that took over the country back in 2014, the once great Ukraine aircraft manufacturer industry is gone for good 😊 RIP Antonov planes ✈️, Cheers 🍻

I've always had a soft spot for the An-70. I hope Antonov can finally find a launch customer for this and start mass producing this. This plane has so much potential.
I'm with you on this. Unfortunately it doesn't really look like it at the moment.
Zero chance for this. Plane has some crucial russian parts and that makes its maintenance and mass production literally impossible. Project is in the stage of deep modernization currently and will be back with new name an77.
Plus Coronavirus
Well Antonov working hard to replace all russian parts of this plane for other...it's as other planes as well...so there's will be time where's antonovs planes will not contain russian parts no more...just give them some time to do so...and yes it's very difficult to replace them...but I'm sure they managed

how can people not love this it's so unorthodox and different from any prop driven cargo plane that's in existence today
Those counter-rotating props are the most fascinating part, to me!!!

Being from upstate ny near Buffalo, I distinctively remember hearing this sound as a kid. We'd see Canada Chinooks flying above us into Toronto. Always made me wonder what it was nearly 30 years later. Thanks so much! Seriously thought I was the only one to hear such a unique sound
Imagine how it sounds at cruise altitude?! I know an A400M can be loud up to 37,000ft, and a TU-95 CLEARLY NOISY even up to 45,000ft!! I heard that the AN-70 loudness when cruise altitude is between an A400M and TU-95, and should sound even more interesting when at cruise altitude as well!!! Nice EXTREME RARE SHOT AND EPIC UNIQUE AUDIO, MATE!!
Love that plane its a beast.
Beautiful! I would love to see it in person...Cheers and Thanks!
My pleasure! You'll need a lot of luck to be able to see it, but I keep my fingers crossed!
Oh my... When the Antonov went through the bridge would have surely been exciting for the drivers under it. To see a great plane like this so close. wow!
Maaaaaaaan, that sound..! Reminds me of the (piston powered) airliners I saw when I wore short shorts. (That's over 50 years ago)
these are turbo props--no pistons.
BILLY LAMB - He said, the sound _reminded_ him of piston powered airliners. That implies he's aware, that the An-70's engines are not piston ones.
Hi, will you find the sound of An-70 kind of similar to one of An-22, but obviously much softer and more pleasant?
@@andreyyasyuchenya2868 - Sound-wise the two are really hard to compare! The An-70 is definitely less noisy of course, but apart from that I can only say the An-22 has more of a droning sound to it.

why the heck would anyone dislike this awesome video?!
Some people seem to be pissed off, because the actual lift-off is not to be seen in the video. That's because it happened behind a hangar and I cut that part out in order to spare my viewers looking at a grey, featureless building, but that doesn't seem to matter for some people.

Vielen Dank!

It was main competitor of A-400 program, and has much better characteristics. Main reason are its much more efficient engines. Antonov also has lots of experience in cargo planes, and A-400 was Airbus' first cargo one.
+Sasha Naronin Well, it's not _quite_ as simple, but basically you're right. The main reason for deciding against the An-70 was potential dependency from Ukrainian supplies and I'm far from happy to say that, but the current situation makes this assessment seem correct.
Yup, the main problem was pro-RUssian government in Ukraine. Guess if the competition would've happed again now An-70 could've haa much higher chances to win.
I've seen it flying a few times, it is as quiet as C-17, unlike all other cargo planes I've seen.
You are wrong completely. A-400 is a copypaste of An-70. An-70 development was mostly supported by Russia, especially due to Russian Airborne (ВДВ) commander in chief lobby. All applied science research for this program is Russian (TSAGI, VIAM, etc.). Ukraine once in the past (Yuschenko administration) tried to refused from Russian participation and establish it with Airbus, but Airbus obtained complete set of documentation for AN-70 and fraudulently refused from participation. Now the history repeats. But today Russia completely closed the program in favour of IL-76-MD90. So An-70 is dead.
Victor V "A-400 is a copypaste of An-70." - Oh, so that's why the most distinct features of the An-70 (like Turbofan engines and counter-rotating propellers) are _not to be found_ at that A400M?!
Realistically, a look at the position of the horizontal stabilisers on both planes alone is enough to see that they are profoundly different.
A-400 is not a copypaste obviously. It's a direct competitor that has substantially worse characteristics but better avionics and is made by a larger company.
Antonov really loved their contra-rotating propellers huh
Why? What's wrong with them?
I can’t really describe this plane’s sound: it doesn’t sound like a turboprop, but it also doesn’t sound like a jet either, but perhaps something in between.
That's because the engines here can be considered as something in between a _Turboprop_ and a _Turbofan_ . The concept is called a _Propfan_ and it's basically a Turboprop engine with a special kind of propeller(s), which is characterised by a higher number of propeller blades with a shorter length than found on usual Turboprops. It can also be considered to be a Turbofan without its outer housing, which is why it's sometimes called _Unducted Fan Engine_ .
In the case of the An-70 all that is added to by the fact that the engines have a pair of contra-rotating propellers each. And so it's no wonder this plane sounds unlike any other I'm aware of. :)
Lovely sound

LEJ.approach/dvldi Did Airbus copied An 70 for A400 program?I heard that they also copied IL-96 for A340 aircraft.I wish Ukraine and Russia work together to revive Antonov and Ilyushin.
I had a discussion about that kind of claims earlier and I say it's complete nonsense. The A400M is different from the An-70 in so many respects, that it simply could not have made any sense to copy the Antonov design.
An aircraft is a very complex system in which every single part needs to be carefully designed to make them all work as one and from that perspective it seems quite clear to me, that copying the An-70 and then changing parts like the engines or the tail would have meant a lot of effort for redesigning all the parts to fit each other again with a potentially less than optimal result, so why not design it all from scratch?
Same with the A340. It was designed to use as many of the same parts as possible with its 2-engined counterpart, the A330. And again, copying the Il-96 and then trying to achieve this goal would probably have been more of a problem, then designing the A340 and the A330 from scratch with the idea of the shared parts in mind from day one.
The same applies to Tupolev's Tu-144, which is often accused of being a copy of the Concorde by the way.
As a fan of Soviet-era airplane designs I feel the same about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. If the two went on working together, they would have a real chance of becoming a major player in certain markets. From what I see, Ilyushin is in a better situation than Antonov, but both of them will have a hard time competing against companies like Airbus or Boeing.
