About:
Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the show is set amongst a larger- than-life junkyard playground and is alive with our favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks.
The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year - the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.

Well, there is a song about a train engine that is boasting about the fact that he is electric. As it was sung by the same actor who plays Tugger, you can imagine what the tone is like. I repeat, it is about a locomotive. Granted, the lyrics are more steamy in that one.

Back then We didn't have the Luxury of Watching it On video, We had to Call A.L.W, to get Permission to do it, and He was in Correspondence with Ms. Guynema Lowe, for 9 Months, Lots of Hard Work but very fun.

I just realized (one of the reasons) why Tuggofelees works. Rum Tum is a CURIOUS cat so Misto being MYSTERIOUS AND MAGICAL just appeals to him. I just love their dynamic
Don't forget misto is playing hard to get, and tugger wants what he gets for himself, so him going after someone that isn't easy to get makes sense for him.

@@GreenFanBoy Him catching it is also played off as funny and seems to be very much in line with the humor in the show. It's not nearly as blatantly off as tap dancers not tapping in time with the music they're dancing to.
The great thing about this stage performance is, that even in songs that are clearly about one character like Tugger, the other cats have such distinct personalities and are not some random cats but have charming, distinct interactions and expressions of their character... it builds up to a wonderful picture of the entire group. I just love Jellylorums shocked face when Tugger gives the older ladies a kiss, or Demeters annoyed strike at him... all the little pieces fit neatly together... that's something the movie lacks
You just described why I love this show.
They all keep their personalities even through the synchronized singing and dancing portions, which means they also keep their opinions about what's happening or who showed up. It's awesome!!
The movie lacks a lot. But this IS Cats.
When he kicks the ball to Misto and he misses, you can see Skimble immediately survey for damage before giving Misto a little reassuring headpat. It's all wonderfully in character even though Skimble has nothing to do with the song.
You're totally right! Their personalities amd relationships shine in every second of the musical.
Everyone who thinks it's just a revue show with cats singing should really pay closer attention. I grin every time Tugger goes up to Demeter's zoned out face and makes the swiper motion over it like: "hey, why aren't you fawning over me like the others?" and she's just like: leave me alone, dude!

i just realized that the reason tugger loves mistoffelees so much is that he's the ONE cat that wasn't hyping him up. Demeter (or bombellirina I can never tell them apart) was going for it and he's like "no go away" but misto is like "u are boring" and tugger is just like "guys this dude is so fucking cool he can do MAGIC TRICKS" I think that's adorable so I had to share.

I LOVE DICTION SONGS! I was Gloria in Thoroughly Modern Millie, but since it was highschool I was also ensemble, so I was a part of the speed test. That song is HARD! This specific cat in the show always made me crack up because he is absolutely the walking personification of a tom cat. They do whatever they want regardless of your obligations and make a fuss about everything. Yet they walk around like the own the world.
I just find it so cute that they were able to perfectly encapsulate that character of a cat into a memorable role.

It's always fun to watch the background characters in these. You see Munkustrap just looking so annoyed and lost, like 'what am I supposed to do about this now?' Then there's Skimbleshanks in the background gesturing around to another cat (I can't identify who it is) and just motioning them over and taking to them. It's just a lot of fun characterisation in the background while John Partridge is hamming it up.

Using costumes from the play would only lessen it's own identity. The original costumes should remain tied to the play only.

Again, the costumes were designed for the play. A completely different medium from film. What works in one medium isn't going to suddenly translate in another. The costumes in a film wouldn't look as good as they do in a play.

I believe the reason why the movie was worse is because they never showed the showed the characters showing different emotions like how they did here. In Old D's song, Rum Tum Tugger is obviously shown that even he has respect for him, showing that he isn't all about that - whatever you call it
In the movie, they saw each character and made them stick to their stereotypes instead of showing more realism

When I was a kid I’d ask to rewind this part of the video and watch it again “because… I just like it”. Now watching this as an adult I’m like, hm - that’s a lot of hip thrusting. Was this my awakening…? A cat? From a musical? Really?
One of the (many) things I love about this is how much fun John Partridge is having. It just makes the whole peformance seem so much better.

cats is known as one of the most absurd musicals ever in the theatre community. it's creepy and confusing, but can also be quirky and fun. we all know this.
but the movie took all of the creepy and confusing, and left out the quirky and fun.
jason derulo didn't do it for me as rum tum tugger. mr. mistoffelees was the best part of the film by far. i had low expectations, but STILL.

My favourite part is at 0:30 because if you watch Misto in the background he's meant to catch the ball Tugger kicks - but instead, it misses and goes right over his head and there's a very brief 'oh shit' moment
One thing I noticed is that a few of the name songs seem to be about what the cats are like...AT HOME, the way their OWNERS see them. RTT probably gives his owner a RIGHT headache getting stuck in drawers, wanting in and out constantly, and refusing every food he's given but he'll eat that same food if he's given something else and harassing her (Idk why I imagine RTT's owner is a middle aged widow) while she's sewing but never wants to cuddle when she wants to.
Misto probably isn't cuddly or super affectionate AT ALL and loves his family....at a distance. As he is described as shy and aloof in his song, as well as often hiding out on the roof. As well as a bit of a trickster. Meanwhile with the Jellicles we see his true self, still quiet, but has self confidence and even sometimes a flare for the dramatic.
And in Mungo and Rumpel's song we see them being absolute chaos incarnate, but we see Rumpel being childish and even a cute kitten at times, while we get a hint that Mungo might have a darker side (being an agent of Macavity. I know Rumpel is usually included as well, but honestly it just makes Rumpel a more interesting character. I'm personally of the opinion that Macavity is the Twins' father, and that's why they are considered "Agents of Macavity" rather than them being evil) but if you listen to Macavity's song...the crimes he's ACTUALLY being accused of by name...aren't very serious if they are actual CRIMES at all, but we know Macavity is dangerous and is implied to have hurt Demeter, and DOES kidnap Old Deut! And we see him being violent and injuring other cats as well. This implies humans don't really know much about Macavity and his true nature. They would probably not see him as any more troublesome than RTT and probably LESS trouble than the twins!!
Jennyanydots is lazy and makes friends with pests instead of killing them.
Rum Tum Tugger is that annoying cat is always negotiating barriers with you.
Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer are destructive.
Skimbleskanks is a 'community cat' who thinks that train won't work without him.
Mistoffelees is that cat that steals your stuff and hides it for funnsies.
And the Jellicle Cats are, overall, your typical self-important, neat and clean 'in-clowder' who dislike the grubby cats like scary Macavity and poor old Grizabella.
I love these poems, and I love how this musical brings them to life.
