About:
Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the show is set amongst a larger- than-life junkyard playground and is alive with our favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks.
The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year - the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.

@@raghvig9837 You have to remember this is a story told from the perspective of actual cats not just some cosplay furries. Its a musical based on an actual book called "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" and its a collection of poetry from the perspective of cats, hence why it was so easily adapted thematically by Andrew Lloyd Webber into songform.
Cat's arent going to have any real grasp of the extent of 'Human Crime' its merely to be a humorous allusion to his depraved nature because every crime they actually mention is one that aint :)

He’s ginger and she’s probably some kind of tabby or a calico, so it’s totally possible for them to have calico kittens and at least one black kitten I believe

well! those lines are sung by bomba and demeter respectively, and while in the original poem that was probably the point (to make such a leap in severity that it was absurdly funny) here it's to serve a different purpose: bomba has all the lines where macavity is like... "toned down". instead of talking about his crimes, she's talking about how weird he looks. bomba is acting more like he's some jilted guy she used to date while demeter is more trying to pull out all the stops to warn the other cats. so you have "yeah, he's a petty bitch sometimes and steals your milk" with demeter cutting in to remind everyone of the severity "he literally KILLS THINGS BE SCARED OF HIM!!!!!"

to be honest both of them seem seduced by him lol
Both were charmed/seduced by him, but Bomburalina didnt stick around long enough to discover that he was abusive or at least a really bad lover. She thinks that Demeter is just overreacting since Demeter is a really anxious cat to begin with (even being scared by the Rum Tum Tugger at times), but Demeter is legitamately terrified of him even if she can remember some of the good times they had together whenever Bomburalina reminds her of them. Yes im reading into it too much but i dont care. Ive crafted personal backstories for every single cat in this godforsaken musical so i can and will die on this hill.

my favorite part of this is watching demeter slowly realize that bombs slept with him too. it comes out in little details, like the fact bomb knows what he looks like and that he cheats at cards. you can also see that demeter and bomb are at different stages: demeter seems to fear him and have been in a more abusive relationship, while bombs just got the initial hots for the bad boy (she flirts with tugger too in his number), and demeter looks a little worried for her. this is the level of choreography that makes characters come to life!

The quote "He was never there" is used to say that there is no evidence that can place him at the scene of the crime, regardless of whether or not it is known that he committed it. If the evidence cannot prove that he is guilty, then in the eyes of the law, he is not. If it cannot definitively place him at the scene, then in the eyes of the law, he was not there. And Macavity is the best there is at ensuring that the evidence cannot prove anything. He always has at least three alibis (evidence that can and will unquestionably prove his innocence, most often an eye witness who can say with certainty, "Yes officer, I saw him in this place at this time") prepared for any given scenario and he always has his escape route planned to have him away from the scene of the crime well before the authorities can arrive.
So regardless of whether it is common knowledge for everyone that he committed the crime or not. What ever time the deed took place, Macavity wasn't there.
He doesn't. But that doesn't make him any less guilty.

As a young cat, Demeter was drawn to Macavity because of his mysteriousness.. but he took advantage of her and left her with two kittens. MungoJerrie and RumpleTeazer. Because of the way they were conceived, she dislikes them and sees them as a reminder of her own naivety..
The kittens, upset due to their mother’s neglect, rebel and secretly work for their father..
Demeter’s younger sister, aware of his crimes, is falling into the same habit that got her sister attacked.. she seeks him because she KNOWS he’s bad.
Demeter sings with a passionate resentment for Macavity, but Bomballurina sings with fascination and seductiveness. She still hasn’t learned her lesson.. and it might be too late.

Demeter and Bombalurina are just powerful singers, this duet was just gives me shivers no matter how often I listen to it.
I watched the whole musical and I think Demeter and Macavity had a case. She's the one to scream "MACAVITY!" every time his laugh is heard, she's the one to recognize him when he disguises himself as Old Deuteronomy and she has a scared but nostalgic look in her face as she sings this. I feel like she's seen the errors of following the villain, but still misses him.
And I think Bombalurina knows AND is very angry at her for it and trying to help her forget that awful tom. But she WILL still judge Demeter for it, even if she doesn't say it out loud.

I can't get over Bombalurina's mic peaking... Like, as a sound person, it's a comfort to me that even professionally, this kind of thing happens, but also I can't just hear those couple of lines where it happens and NOT be distracted by it...
In person it's not as big of a deal b/c most people forget about it as soon as it stops, but being able to go back and rewatch the same performance repeatedly it's easier to notice.

Also, this musical is my favorite - I’ve literally watched it more times than I can count - and the movie was an absolute cringe fest train wreck. Matthew Donovan. my .class mates reacted (acted again) the musical and made the moves kid friendly and the songs were hafely sung to make it easyer to remember
My English teacher showed us this scene during my freshman year of high school, forgot how it tied in with the lesson. Now I just recently saw the whole thing, but this scene still sticks to me. It also started my crush on Bombalurina haha, when her part kicks my gut sinks in for like a second.

I think a lot of people miss the point when they say the movie would have worked better if it were animated. A very important part of the musical is the dancing. In my opinion animation takes some of the shock valiue from dancing. You don't think "Wow, I can't believe a human being can do that" because a human being isn't doing that.

This cast is the only cast who can do Cats right, the look, the sound, the moves. That personality that shows from the cast in the videos ❤
My child had to remember and recite the first half of the poem of this song for school, and she found this song, and it was so useful. Weve also seen Cats in the theatre. Its got genious choreography, songs, costumes and actors/actresses. We saw it in theatre about 4/5 years ago and cant wait for it to come back near us on tour so we can see it again.

I did this musical not too long ago and I was able to play the amazing part of Demeter in the show. When I saw the 2019 movie I was pretty disappointed as Demeter wasn’t involved in the macavity dance at all and Barley even had a line. This show perfectly shows every cat and what their capable of. I will always prefer this side of cats :)

She actually took lessons on broadway and did musical theatre as a teen, she played Maria in sound of music as a kid, she just doesn’t sing in that belt style on her albums bc she prefers to showcase her lyrics.

Don't Touch Me Some of it can be confirmed though. There’s no proof Mistoffolees is their child (I doubt he is), but Demeter and Macavity definitely had a thing. In fact, probably very abusive. Choreographer Gillian Lynne states in the behind the scenes footage that they definitely have a past, and actress Lena Hall, the original Broadway actress for Demeter, was told that Macavity may have even raped Demeter causing her to be skittish.
It's based off a poem that didn't confirm any of that. It's all up to the actors/directors/audience etc to interpret the performance
I know, but I'm specifically talking about the musical (and, I guess the movie). There are specific directions added into the script. Even on the Cats the Musical's official website, Macavity is described as "spending much of his time attempting to kidnap Demeter". Why? Like you said, up to the creators. But that can at least be confirmed that Macavity wants her for some reason.
