Rebel Wilson's voice at the beginning causes me physical pain.
Just be glad she stops after the first 10 seconds. She does sound like a strangled cat so maybe that’s what she was going for.

There were some hilarious reviews for this monstrosity, but Andrew Lloyd Webber saying that he went out and got a emotional support dog because of it? Beautiful.

It's such a shame the plot is so bad too because I actually like some of the songs just i wish it wasn't the characters because that plot ruins them.
What hurts most is that a percentage of these actors are professional dancers with real careers and then they're saddled with hoopers exceedingly dumb ideas.

The only time that I laughed is this part 1:42! At least in the song! In the movie they were actually some things that made me laugh.
How did Tom Hooper suck every last drop of magic out of this. It's almost a talent to wreck a musical this badly.

To be honest, when this movie was announced as a live action CGI movie, i knew there was no way this movie is gonna be good. Even having Tom Hooper involved, no way this movie would be good as he's also not that experienced with motion capture work as reports saying that he tortured visual effects artists during post and rushed the whole thing. I like Hooper's other movies and i wish him the best for making a comeback after this trainwreck because i think he's very talented, just not this type of project that he should've worked on
One of the biggest crimes in this version is that Tugger doesn't say Meow. Every Rum Tum Tugger actor can show you exactly who Tugger is with just a meow.
Pros: Jason Derulo actually has a lovely voice

His voice isnt fit for someone like Tugger, in the 1998 musical, Tugger was like the pelvic thrusting david bowie and Jason doesnt really do this for us.

Dude his performance lacked all the punch and swagger of the 1998 version. Jason Derulo totally could have pulled it off but they just like muffled the song in a way it seems. It doesn't hook you and grab you like the 1998 version :( such a missed opportunity

I just watched an Arby’s ad where it had kids say “we have the meats” and I thought that was the most uncomfortable I’d be today. I was wrong
I just realized one of the reasons why Tugger is so underwhelming in this. Besides the fact that they keep putting their focus on Rebel Wilson, in the theater version, not only is Tugger one of the few cats that primarily sung about himself (the others being Mungojerrie & Rumpleteazer and Skimbleshanks), but he also sang another cat's number. Here, he only gets one number and everyone else sings about themselves. In the musical, Rumtumtugger is notable for stealing the show, but in the movie, everyone is trying to steal the show so he doesn't stand out at all
As I've said hundreds of times before, Adam Lambert is the only one who could have killed that song since he can hit those notes!!!

Ngl he's not a bad casting choice. But he seems kinda... lost? Like he doesn't know what he should be doing in any of the scenes, and the song lacks a lot of energy as a result.

Agreed. He is definitely able to pull it off with good direction. But also, he's got a decent and strong voice. He seems kind of vocally held back for some reason? I guess it's to make the joke by rebel make sense but that was just unnecessary. Kinda underwhelming until halfway through when he can really let loose
@@Regmuslima apparently the actors all sang the songs live on set and recorded them that way as well with no orchestra or anything. All of the performances are kind of flat, and I think that is the reason. At least in Le Mis Tom Hooper gave the actors an orchestra so that they could go with the flow of the song and feel the emotion. In this one they got nothing.

Rebel Wilson is so typecast in this movie it hurts. She's a good actress and that shows when she has a well-developed character (for example; Isn't It Romantic) but her "comic relief" roles are just poorly written. :/

This, When I saw the trailer, I was like: At least we will have more Misto and Tugger interactions, which will distract me from how bad the movie looks like. I'm completely disappointed about how they missed the chance to do AT LEAST SOMETHING GOOD in the movie.
It’s so frustrating because Jason Derulo is not a miscast at all. While he wouldn’t be THE Rum Tum Tugger we know from the stage recording that’s never something I expected from the movie anyway. If I wanted that portrayal I would watch that film and don’t expect another person to perform a miracle for this one.
Jason Derulos persona could have in general translated very easily and very well into a different kind of Rum Tum Tugger but for that he should have been ALLOWED to properly recreate this character with enough time and a thought out direction.
And I don’t mind adjusting the song to Jason’s more pop voice but then at least give him enough time and practice so his pronunciation becomes clearer to understand since thats not exatly a priority in the pop style - but this is still a musical, we NEED to understand what he says.
Also the Rum Tum Tugger should have played a bigger role in the movie, he is basically the second lead in the musical. I’m not saying give him all the scenes but let him do MORE!

"Percy Jackson" is that something, anyway, Rick Riordan is the author of the books and he said that he didn't like the adaptations and said on his blog that the creator hardly has a finger in the prodution if the studio doesn't want to listen. So yeah webber may nkt have liked it but he didn't had a say on what was done with the movie.

fr! i’ve met john, as he’s best friends with my acting coach, as they were both on cats the musical together. amd john was really nice, and he even sung the rum tum tugged, and he still sounds incredible!

This is what happens when you watch Les Mis and somehow think "wow, this was a wonderful adaptation of this musical, we DEFINITELY should let Tom Hooper take a stab at another musical!"
Also, I'd love to high-five the writer that insisted in giving Rebel the "stop milking it" line because, well...*gestures*
The difference was, Les Miserables doesn't require a lot of motion capture heavy CGI roles unlike Cats which caused a lot of problems for Tom Hooper. Hooper is not experienced with motion capture roles like this unlike Andy Serkis, Peter Jackson, James Cameron, Steven Spielberg etc. I love Les Miserables movie but even hiring Hooper to direct this movie in form of live action motion capture CGI was already a red flag due to his experience. Some reports even said that he dissed the visual effects artist for working so slow (again Hooper is not a CGI heavy experienced director so clearly he doesn't know how this type of movie works) as they were overworked and underpaid. If this was an animated movie, it could've worked instead of whatever this is

It's because he had to sing it live while running around, not in a studio. He's not Broadway trained so the directing and editing didn't do him any favors

It's very sad how they changed tugger's character for the worst. You only realize it if you really think about it. In the 1998 version, Tugger is of course a show-off and is rebellious BUT he is also respectful as seen in the Mr mistoffelees and old deuteronomy songs. In 2019 version, he's just a jerk. He says that jennyanydot's song is just old school and he continuesly gets close to girls like Victoria and then is just like "sike." Also, at the end of his song, he hisses at grizabella. I wasn't expecting this at all because in the 1998 version, he just does this little flick with his mane instead of being downright rude to grizabella and hiss at her. 😢

First off, Rebel Wilson's "funny" lines were completely unnecessary, cut those out
Second, it's all wrong
I have nothing against Jason, but his portrayal of Rum Tum Tugger is nowhere near like the original, he comes off more like a spoiled teenager, and his mannerisms honestly make him seem like a complete idiot
His singing also sounds very restrained, like he wasn't allowed to hit the lower notes, which is what Tugger was known for
It's a shame too, as Tugger is my favourite character from the show, I feel if they've given Jason less restraint, more expressive choreography, and an overall better design (come on man, lose the pimp coat, your character is not a pimp, where is the signature belt, spiked collar and bandana?), it may have worked

As a lover of the original musical... This made me want to gouge my eyes out... Jason Derulo nailed the character, but the DAMN VISUALS!
The producer has taken away the mysterious, playful and sexual "cat" that is Rum Tum Tugger. Some things are too good to mess with.
If the movie used makeup instead of CGI then this movie might've actually been good

And give it more of a structure of a story, for example have it be a form of a detective movie of the cats trying to find Macavity by going to the past people he worked with before he ruins the annual jelicle ball.

They really should’ve thought over everything before they released this movie. The singing and dancing isn’t that awful... it’s mostly just the CGI and story. My friend, who unfortunately took me to see it, knew nothing of the musical and didn’t understand the movie at all. He now calls it: “a mild hallucination that never happened.”
I agree with him, but it had so much potential. It could’ve been great if they had listened to the audience when the first trailer dropped. Seriously guys, tone down the CGI you’re getting a bit carried away now. XD
I mean there was no going back by the time the trailer dropped ... they shoud've just used makeup and costumes from the beginning. As well as hiring someone who actually likes over the top musicals to direct it!
Yeah everyone is just trying to be Marvel at this point. Using CGI to make their movies look good. I mean it works for Marvel but not for other movies

I honestly dont think its the CGI thats the issue. I havent watched the show before watching the movie, and honestly it feels like it was made by someone who really doesnt get musicals, im not sure they even like them. Like why the hell is this song constantly being interrupted by Rebels bad improv? The cuts make it so hard to get into the overthe top nature of it, you can barely see any of the dancing and choreography. Most of the singing is just not good enough. Rebel Wilson cant carry the Gumby cat song by herself, and im assuming she either cant or didnt want to learn a choreo so instead she eats the roaches? What? Its so uncomfotable and creepy. Why do some cats wear sneakers? Why do some wear clothes? Why is Taylor in heels? She also doesnt dance.Half the time u can see theres a choreo going on in the back or around, but the camera keeps cutting away or is just zoomed in on the ''stars'' face and u cant see it.
The show is a ballet, dance musical. Its all about the creative colorful spectacle along with the amazing choroes, dancing and singing.
I know the CGI would be the last thing I would complain about if the dancing and singing was there.

OK, I know that this movie gets a lot of flak for pretty much all its songs (apart from Skimbleshanks, which was awesome and is a worthy counterpart to the original) but this one probably has the biggest drop in quality of all of them.
With John Partridge's version you can see him draw in the other cats (and the audience) with his sheer energy and charisma, and you enjoy him despite him being annoying in many ways and treating a lot of them like trash. This version is annoying and entitled WITHOUT the charisma or energy that makes you like him regardless; he just seems like the school's least popular kid trying to imitate the king and failing miserably.
Just noticed that at 0:22, a child-faced mouse slams into his crotch. Cats truely is a movie that keeps on giving. When you think you've spotted everything wrong

There are countless variations, changes in character's names, songs in the Cats musical, all that differs in several countries as well. But people usually reference some versions more often, like the 1998 movie version, which gave even more popularity to the show.

1:16 This line is interesting when you think about it. The cats are sapient creatures with their own society, yet this joke implies that they are frequently castrated. By whom, exactly? There seem to be no humans around in this city. Do the cats do it to each other, or even to themselves? Do they undergo the procedure voluntary or are they forced to have their testes removed by some higher cat medical authority? Who decides if you are neutered and why? Is losing your reproductive organs just something that they accept in this nightmare world that they inhabit? So many unanswered questions to keep one up at night.

I didn't know it was possible to ruin Tugger and yet here we are.
Also, the absolute AUDACITY the director had to make Tugger and Mistoffelees straight is honestly devastating.
EXACTLY like Misto and Tugger both show interest in the queens (and occasionally the kittens) but there’s still clearly tension between them! RTT sings an entire song about how amazing Misto is (with a cute little rainbow flag and everything!) and Tom Hooper went “yep, straight”
that wasn't a flag that was a handkerchief, Misto is a magician. Have you never seen the handkerchief trick? And why does it have to be sexual why can't they just be friends?
I think Rum Tum softly said "Jason Derulo" to himself after he polished the menu and looked at his reflection. Lol
The instruments for this are mostly fine, and I know some people criticize this for having a lot less energy than the original, but I want to count this as it’s own thing. However, even when I do that, Rebel Wilson’s “comedy” just slows the whole song down when it seems like it’s gonna build up. Same problem happens with Mr.Mistofolies in this version, but I can barely count that as an song, more of someone talking with a track playing in the back.
2:32 this was one of my favorite Parts in the original and when you listen to the soundtrack version of this song they just cut it out😭😭😭
