Wow, this has so many awesome callbacks to the campaign missions! For those who haven't played it, the first chapter of the base game AOE3 campaign has you playing as Morgan Black (whose portrait is the imperial age upgrade card lenlenlena was hovering over at 07:00), a knight from Malta's "Knights of St. John" order of crusaders. His missions see you defending your command post (which looks similar to the commanderie building in this video), and then destroying an Ottoman invasion's ammo caches (that look like Depots and explode using the same animation). Then you receive orders from Morgan's boss Alain Magnon (whose portrait is re-used for the Maltese explorer shown in this video, as are his British-sounding voice lines) to hunt down a secret cabal known as the Circle of Ossus in the Americas to prevent them from finding the fountain of youth. In the end, Alain Magnon reveals he leads the Circle of Ossus, and the final mission sees you destroying the fountain of youth and killing Alain Magnon with the help of a captured Fixed Gun (much like the deployable fixed gun artillery the Maltese civilization has in this video). In the campaign, Malta fielded a campaign-exclusive unit called the "Hoop Throwers," now finally playable in multiplayer though they are called Fire Throwers now. The fact they can train them from an artillery foundry in the second age is another callback to the campaign, as is their multinational army of mercenaries/crusaders that they employ. Morgan Black, the hero unit, had a swashbuckler area of effect attack, and it's great to see his imperial age upgrade boost your hero with a similar ability. All of the unique naval attributes of the Maltese seem new. This is how you create a DLC! Plenty of new stuff, plus new takes on old ideas that fans of the original game have grown familiar with. However, it could be unbalanced as all heck but again, I just play single player so I don't care lol
Between the static fortifications, enormous cannons, explosive traps, and flamethrowers it seems like Malta has the WWI mentality but in the 17th century.
Really enjoyed this video. Clear outline of their strengths and features. Felt like I have learnt about the entire civ. Would love to see the same kind of video for Italy. Thank you for the great content!
It feels kind of awkward in the early game because Malta doesn't have any form of economic bonuses. They rely either on the trading post shipment, or the German settler wagon shipment to act as the backbone of their economy. Age 2 seems pretty easy to figure out though, chop out 200 wood and drop down a hospital in the middle of the map as a forward barracks, then create a combination of crossbows, pikes, and a Knight to tank some of the damage. Skirmish a bit, then go and heal up. Rinse and Repeat until Age 3. Age 3+ is when you get access to fixed guns, Commandries Shipments, and Forts. This is when if you're not on the backfoot, your opponent may begin to feel this slow tide spreading and overtaking the map in the form of outposts, fixed guns, forts, and an army that just seems to be everywhere you go. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of build order becomes the meta for Malta. Side Note; I love the Age 5 throwback to Morgan as the Scottish Marshal.
well Chris, if you use the Commandri wagon sent by the Settler Wagons shipment, you might do early game a foothold in the enemy's face, and if you manage to keep it working and defeat the enemy waves, you can go age 3 and make your enemy a lot weaker for an attrition war against you
This is just bizarre... it's like they wanted to recycle a campaign civ into a real one. AoE III is by definitions where Empires begin. I'd swap these for Austria-Hungary any day.
I’m sad they don’t get Morgan or Allen as like a home city shipment like hell you can even see the two on the Knights of the round table card (though their explorer basically is just Allin without his horse but still)
Great video, I really like the look of malta. Malta only getting 1 factory seems weird though I hope they change that. For italy it's obviously due to the lombards providing a lot of vills worth in eco, but malta don't seem to have anything eco wise to make up for the lack of a second factory.
Well back in Old Vanillia AOE3 day some civs like Spain and Russia only had 1 factory. As for Malta they do have some cards to help their wood dependant economy like the re-usable food for wood card and the faster natural resource gathering near TCs and outposts, and the infinite wood card in age IV.
Great video, waiting for Italy too! Quick tip, would love for the speed of the commentary games to be increased, at the moment it seems sluggish after being used to play at a higher speed. Keep up the good work!
Wow.. well.. this is a RPG fantasy, I like many of the "military" micro macro stuff of the maltese, especially the micro, but mmm maybe the fantasy tricks are too much, it seems ridicolous. However it's cool I really like this addition... especially when it will fight near me. Thanks for the video
6:52 I don't know much about Maltese history but what does Hungary have to do with them? Aren't "revolutions" somehow related to the original factions, like Spain-Mexico or Italy-Argentina? The Barbary states I almost could understand it, as it would be better to have the Ottomans but they're already a civ, so Barbary are the closest Ottoman vassals/dependencies
they can, since the Fixed Gun counts as a building, however the Fixed gun can shoot back, with the backside that it has a HUGE bonus malus vs artillery, so if you believe that can happen, try to have at hand some hussars to make a charge against those mortars or oprichniks, wich are better and you maybe like more them
@@NeonKnightOA I tried Starcraft 2 once because everyone kept saying it's like the best RTS ever. I was really disappointed, it totally sucked. Are those worms like GDA's tunnel network in Command & Conquer: Generals?

oh you, I thinked the same thing but with a crazy idea: what about if the campaing was remade just to fit the new maltese civ, or would be too much?
Like this comment and let me know if you would like to see this style of video with Italy
yes please!!
Yes please len

Few centuries too early
This sounds already op. I can see kynsesie having lots of fun with these big canons behind walls xD
Haha and Kaiserklein is gonna love it of course
2:59 Wait, so they are just Nydus Worms?

Morgan Black is also an unlockable skin for the Malta Explorer.

Kaiserklein might as well join SamuraiRevolution back in legacy.
Heres me hoping Kaiserklein will become an italy enjoyer but someone said he is probably pulling his hair out to this.
2:52 Oh cool, so they're like Sky Passages from "Age of Mythology". 👍

So much possibilities for op shit but I think nerf will be fast if even needed. Excited for both tbh

You can unlock them both as explorers If tou complete the malese missions

Maltese could have their own church skin, the spaish feels repeated...
Literally playing as the Crusade era's Knights Hospitaller, everything is so fun!
Thanks for the info! I'm so happy AoEIII:DE is getting more content!
U made Call of Duty Edits back in the days? The beginning reminds me of that
Yes my friend, hahaha, good spot
swashbuckler politician is insane btw, he gets the aoe spin attack and can one shot heavy infantry and most cav
Ultimate defense civ

Man thoses fixed guns give me Empire earth 2 vibes oooooow good times :D
Really good video, very informative and to the point.
thanks lena, best content so far to understand the new civ

Forget Tower Rush. Now it's a Depo rush.
They revamped campaign act 1 into a new civ
This unit promotion is very much like in Company of Heroes
More more more please. Amazing video

When I think of new civs to add to AoE3, I gotta say, Knights of Malta isn't even on it.
can mortars attack the big stationary cannon?

I kinda wish fixed guns were convertable like campaign ones
I'm picture indeed literally
ngl not having culvs as native is gonna be even more painfull
So the commanderies act like GDA's tunnel network?
Exactly!
So Malta sounds fun.
When does it come out??
Is this AOE3's byzantines ?
If i had money I will buy that game immediatly
when is Malta coming into the game?
26th
@@ben3129 cheers
How do play with Malta in the game? I don't seem to find them when choose Skirmish Mode.
It's a brand new DLC they're releasing in a couple of days. Check out the steam store for more info!
So, the commandery building is basically a teleporter?
Am I understanding that right?
Underground tunnel are used, i know all the old magic tricks
Think of the Nydus Worms from StarCraft's Zerg faction. More or less.

What's up with the plague doctor units at the end? Are they a new outlaw unit?
I didn't get early access 😔 don't suppose you can recommend me to someone 😅
Any word on what's the Malta and Italy church card providing?
Thank you very much

Da vincie tank?
Update coming.
I think we should replace fixed gun with trebuchet,Also, why Hussar?,why they don’t add unique cavarly like WOL did.
Why trebuchet? This is not medeival period lol.
Well it kinda makes sense to put trebuchet and also a winged knight or winged hussar
lol
Is it just me or does that field hospital reskin look really garish and ugly?
British is the best! Haha😏😏😏😏
video is 8 mins long
why i feel its not that interesting .......civ mod vibes coming
Sounds to me like the game will be unplayable... They have really nice features but too many lancers...curass and opris 😂and teleporting forts 🥴
