This is probably the most saddening video I have ever seen on UA-cam. The last of his species calling for a mate that will never come to him. The poor bird died believing he was not worthy of love or companionship.
Tattiana: This was a very special bird. when they were plentiful they inhabited all the islands. The bird catchers would put glue onto branches to trap them. They would just pluck the yellow feathers, then release the bird to regrow those feathers. The feathers were woven into the capes & helmets of the ali'i and only the Ali'i were able to wear them. There are many songs and hula in honor of the O'o bird. Look up the song "Manu O'o" a 19th century mele and if you can find it, Rayleen Lancaster wrote an Oli suggesting that since the bird can no longer speak for itself, we must speak for it. Often it is a simile or metaphor for the Hawaiian people and their struggle for existence.
Musical composition is very good. When a species is gone , it's gone, and we need them more than they need us . For our sake and theirs , it's time to take care of the world much better than we are doing.
@@michelandres7003 It was the factors of non-native predators brought to the island, and environmental destruction, both of which were caused by humans, that lead to the extinction, along with severely declining number of other honeyeater birds. Thank you for making such a beautiful animation about such a little known bird. The first time I heard the O'o was on the show Racing Extinction, where I was moved to tears. I was then inspired to write a short story. It's still unpublished at the moment, but this short film pairs so well with it and helps spread the word.
