Battle for the California Desert: Why is the Government Driving Folks off Their Land?

- The Antelope Valley is a vast patch of desert on the outskirts of Los Angeles County, and a segment of the few rugged individualists who live out there increasingly are finding themselves the targets of armed raids from local code enforcement agents, who've assembled into task forces called Nuisance Abatement Teams (NATs).
The plight of the Valley's desert dwellers made regional headlines when county officials ordered the destruction of Phonehenge: a towering, colorful castle constructed out of telephone poles by retired phone technician Kim Fahey. Fahey was imprisoned and charged with several misdemeanors.
But Fahey is just one of many who've been targeted by the NATs, which were assembled at the request of County Supervisor Mike Antonovich in 2006. LA Weekly reporter Mars Melnicoff wrote an in-depth article in which she exposed the county's tactic of badgering residents with minor, but costly, code violations until they face little choice but to vacate the land altogether.
"They're picking on the the people who are the most defenseless and have the least resources," says Melnicoff.
Reason.tv collaborated with Melnicoff to talk with some of the NAT's targets, such as retired veteran Joey Gallo, who might face homelessness if he's forced to leave his house, and local pastor Oscar Castaneda, who says he's already given up the fight and is in the process of moving off the land he and his wife have lived on for 22 years. And, while Antonovich declined an interview, we did catch up with him at a public meeting in order to ask the big question at the center of all this: Why the sudden enforcement of these codes against people living in the middle of the desert, who seemingly are affecting no one?

We bought a land in Antelope Valley and currently living off grid in our land. I remember watching this video 4 years ago when we bought the land. It is making us nervous that the county is going to send NATs to us and drive us out to the streets. We are trying to reverse desertification, forest reforestation, regreening the desert, and beautifying the area for the environment and community. But, we do know our rights but again it might not be enough...
There are enough laws on the books to make every citizen a criminal.
I agree with you we can't do anything in public parks can't go fishing do y'all want to make money . Well all these government officials are getting kickbacks above their paygrade. We are nothing but slaves to them. The people that live in the desert their land they pay taxes on it. That is not enough for government they want it all. This is real. My friend in Lancaster just told the county and their lackies to get off his property and pumped his shot gun and his wife came out with a gun too. Its been about a year and heard nothing from the county. Know your rights!
I thought I was the only one crazy enough to do something like that, glad to hear that it worked for your friend too. I live in a 'normal' densely populated residential area so it might have been a bit more surprising for them to come across someone with a barricaded gate and guns. I assume that in the desert areas there's a higher percentage of freedom lovers that will fight to protect their freedom, but maybe not.
Usually they'll send the ATF to assassinate your wife and children, and kill your dog too to make sure you REALLY get the message.

@@DonziGT230 In florida they assess the property at $25 to $50 per-day fine to strip the equity. They don't do abatement or anything but rather it is about getting a lien the property. Here they have to send you a letter for a hearing with their special magistrate. In Florida they will post signs, send certified mail, schedule hearings ect but once they get that daily fine in place and the clock going they leave you alone and let the daily fines add up.
I wish the nucience abatement enforcement would work that fast in the cities.

In case anyone is wondering, LA County approved a 20,000 home development plan in Antelope Valley in spring 2019 which is expected to bring in $31 million of revenue for the county. That's why these people were being driven off - clearing the chaff away in preparation for private development by Tejon Ranh Company.
People when the government shows up to help you, tell them to get off your property immediately.
You need a lawyer. You also need to tell them they have no rights to take pictures. They come on your property with weapons, call the law and let them know that you have your own.

We are having this same problem where I live. The public land is being sold to developers, when not a single resident wants this. This is not representative government. It is government sold to the highest bidder. This is corruption.

The simple truth is, you don't own any land at all, you don't own your house, you don't even own your car. You pay rent to the government for all of these things, and even so; they can still come in and dictate how to manage "your" property and, if they want, they can find some reason to evict you. Or just use eminent domain.

And I know up here in Maine there's been numerous times people were forced out of there homes on eminent domain or offered only a fraction of the value of homes hell even had politician push people out of there homes and sold all there belonging s to pay back taxes to town but after they had already Ben paid so states pretty much stole these family's old antiques and haven't returned anything besides the home that was bare

I think the real reason for this is obvious. They're trying to drive people off of the land that they need to build a new freeway. The San Gabriel and LA freeways are too congested. This partially due to the massive amount to commercial truck traffic. They are going to need another avenue for trucks to get in and out of the Southland. Additionally, the new freeway will open up the desert valley to real estate development.

2019. I to own property just South of antelope Valley in Acton. The county will not recognize an existing well, On the vacant land that has been in my family for over 30 years, so i can build a house on it. And has insisted I put in a new well. The existing well we'll meet their standard of almost 800 gallons A-day. But any new wells come with a high price tag for permits and drilling fees. I do not understand why they require so much water, I am currently on a well in northern California and between my wife my daughter myself two dogs and 6 chickens we only average 85 gallons today Communist California is a very crooked state.
