These long overtime playoff games are part of the reason why I love playoff hockey. One day of being tired is worth the incredibly memorable experience of a multi-overtime game.
I still remember staying up late on a Thursday school night to watch Keith Primeau finish the game with that shot against Ron Tugnutt and going to school the next morning in 5th grade and it being all I wanted to talk about to anyone that would listen 😂 The only other game from my childhood I remember so well was game 6 against Tampa Bay when Primeau tied it up late and then Gagne won it in OT in 2004 ECF
I remember all 3 of the Dallas games on that list but I did fall asleep before all of them ended. The Dallas Vancouver game in 2007 stands out to me because I recorded the game and fell asleep before it ended. When I woke up the next morning for work I went to turn the vcr off and saw that the game had just ended minutes before I woke up. I have the entire game on tape, it ended right before I ran out of tape
The Lightning/Bluejackets game was significant because Columbus had famously swept the Ning in the previous year. It took an epic battle to get the monkey off their backs. Started them on the 2 cups, 3 finals, and 11 series wins.
Even more so that five overtime game was the first game of the series I remember telling myself as a bolts fan new strategy bois cant get swept by em again if the game dont end 😂😂
Hate to bring it up but it also got massive media attention(including news outlets that never talk sports)as the first set of post season games among the North American Sports Leagues after the COVID hiatus as well. Plus playing at a neutral site as well (watching it on TV starting in the 2nd OT)in Toronto with no fans made it maybe the most unique hockey game I ever saw. Thanks, Shannon. The Uwe Krupp cup clincher for Colorado in triple overtime is probably my most memorable, even though I'm a Canucks and Penguins fan. I was 12 or 13 at the time and it was thrilling to watch an OT game for a cup clincher. And I got to stay up late.
Saw the Isles Caps game in 1987 at The Cages aux Sports in Montreal. They kicked us out at 3am and we found out Lafontaine had scored on the drive home. There is nothing in sports better then NHL playoff OT. Never change it.
That game last night, there were 17,000+ fans still there until 2am. Now a few fans left in the first OT, when they thought Florida scored. They tried to get back in the building. But the ones at the old school security guards gates weren't permitted back in.

One of the reasons this OT was better played than most others was because both teams were coming off of long layoffs, so they were pretty rested. Much more so than if they had played a game two nights before. And there better not be any changes to playoff OT format. This is unique to the NHL, and the longer a game goes, the more memorable it becomes.
My favorite overtime game was Buffalo vs New Jersey back in 1994. Hasek vs Brodeur. I was 10 years old and it was the first multi overtime game that I had to watch until the end. Even though the Devils lost, that game made me a Devils fan for life. My very close second favorite was Arnott's winner in the 2000 finals game 6 vs the Stars (sorry Shannon).

They can be fun to watch and then they take a widdle on the floor. Could drive one crazy. The '87 game was surprisingly my first double OT+ game despite watching the game since '65. I have particular memory of it in that I went for supper right after the 3rd period ended and had a good meal with good company and when we came back, was quite surprised to watch the final period. Since then I have always watched all OT PO games to a conclusion. OT in the PO is the most exciting part of hockey. Never change it.
I can't believe how excellent every skater and goalie played for that long. I swear, the entire game felt furious and Bob and Freddie just kept stopping everything. Just an unbelievable game... Not to mention the fans who really tried to keep up the energy in spite of ridiculous hours.
I watched that entire Flyers/ Pens Game went through a few pizzas and was determined to watch the entire game. When Primeu scored I screamed and yelled to a house that was asleep at the time. Mom and Dad thought I was being murdered in my bed. What a game.
Love watching these long games. Still recall the Canucks and Stars game staying up way to late when I should’ve been in bed for school in the morning watching on my little tv in my room lol these games are historic and great to watch!
Few things. The ones that stand out for me are the Flyers over Pittsburgh and the Islanders over Washington in 1987. On that one, I fell asleep on the couch and when I woke up I thought it was a replay(the game was on USA and they used to replay the game at like 2am) only to find out it was still going on. I remember LaFontaine just putting it on net and beating Mason who just collapsed after the goal. The Flyers/Pens game, I was living in Arizona at the time and my wife and I went to dinner at Damon's where they had the game on. We finished and went home and kept on watching(I'm a huge Flyers fan). It's one of those rare time when I was living there where the game got done after midnight. And the goal that ended that one wasn't cheap. Primeau hit a stop, pop, and bang goal. The only other overtime game(other than the heartbreaking game 6 of the 2010 finals) was game 2 of the 1974 finals when Bobby Clarke scored on a rebound to finally get the winning in Boston monkey off the Flyers backs on our way to our first Cup.
Wasn't a long overtime by any means, but the energy and excitement from Lehkonen's game winner to send MTL to the cup for the first time in my life made me cry, an indescribable feeling watching your team clinch a series in OT. Hoping that's a moment that grips my son to the game the same way I have been for 25 years
Penguins v. Red Wings Game 5 Stanley cup final 2008 in 3 OT is perhaps my favorite NHL game of all time. Fun fact: GW Goal Petr Sykora. But that Max Talbot tying goal had me jumping for joy.
The previous 14 games to go to at least 4 OT (so excluding last night), 12 of those 14 teams that won the marathon OT game went on to win that series. For the 54 previous games that went to at least 3 OT, 41 of the 54 winners of the long OT game went on to win the series. Winning an epic OT game gives you a huge mental boost. And Rod Brind'Amour said it best, you would rather lose in a blowout than in a long OT game. It will be interesting to see if Carolina can buck this trend, but the odds definitely are against them.
As a NJ diehard I remember some serious real deal OTs for all time. 1994 - First Round NJ v Buffalo. Brodeur vs Hasek. 4 OT. Buffalo wins 1-0 to force game 7. 2000- Stanley Cup Finals NJ vs Dallas. Brodeur vs Belfour 3 OT 1 - O Dallas with Modano getting the game winner to force game 6. ( I was there, it was brutal) Game 6 NJ won in 2 OT to win The Stanley Cup.
One of the great things about Shannon's channel is that occasionally he'll share his inner feelings with us. It's not surprising to me that all of us are so similar. If you love hockey, you gotta love the epic games.
Long OTs are the best part in my opinion. The Islanders/Capitals one was the first one I remember. I was 11 at the time and I was made to go to bed at the end of the 2nd overtime. When I got up the next morning, my mom (who got me into hockey), asked me to guess 3 things, who won, the player that scored, and the # of OT’s. I actually guessed correctly on the Islanders winning and Lafontaine scoring, and I missed on the OTs (I said 5 OTs instead of 4). I was so proud of myself.
Legendary US News Anchor David Brinkley later in his career when he hosted ABC's Sunday Morning Newstalk program "This Week", actually did a 2 minute segment on that Isles/Caps game at the end of the news headlines of the day which back then was at the start of the show.
My favorite moment was when Primeau won it for Philadelphia. He was hated in Philly being that he was traded for Brind’Amour and he flat out underperformed . Not to mention that we all knew why Brindy was traded (Cough, Lindros). That goal endeared Primeau to the fanbase. Honorable mention to Pat Lafontaine against the Caps, I still remember Doc Emmirick’s call and watching Mason’s stick slide down his blocker hand.
Mentioning Mt. St. Helen's, I always associate it with the Islander's first Stanley Cup win, because the mountain blew on Sunday and the Islanders won the Cup the following Saturday. In OT. I was a freshman geology student in college at the time, and we had different students volunteer to sit in the office to watch the USGS teletype (yeah, one of the old teletype machines) for news on the volcano, which we knew could blow any minute. Well, the one time nobody was watching was Sunday morning, which was when it blew, which shows what nature thinks about man's plans. Before the Pat Lafontaine game, the longest OT anyone could remember was Rangers vs. Blackhawks which Pete Stemkowski ended in the 3rd OT. I'd guess it was 1971. I listened to that game on the radio. No TV in NY because the game was at MSG. And the Rangers ended up losing the series.
I was rooting for the Kings, but that was a lame goal based on how well each team and goaltender were playing. I felt absolutely awful for Corey Crawford after that.
@@justletmecommentprz He had a few great years and won 2 Stanley Cups (and 2 Jennings). I don't think he was ever a top 5 G, but he certianly had a pretty darn good career...so don't feel too bad for him 😂
the Keith Primeau 5th OT goal I still remember vividly with Steve Levy announcing the game on television. I stayed up and watched the whole thing, and I'm a Capitals fan!
Ward’s game 7 ot goal against Boston is still one of my favorite moments as a caps fan, especially because of how much of a rollercoaster that season was.
The Islanders-Capitals game in '87 sticks out for me. Like you, I'm not a fan of either team (Leafs forever!), but that one really intrigued me and my friends watching it over a few beers. I remember all of us cheering for the Capitals (for the same reason - the Islanders already had four Cups) and how deflated we were when Lafontaine ended it - it felt almost as bad as if our own favourite team had lost.
As a Jets fan, I remember the 87 Easter Epic game 7 as one of the best games I've ever seen. Watching Mason drop to his knee in the crease, is a image I'll never forget. One of those water logged goalie pads, probably weighs more than all a goalies equipment now 😂
I missed that Islanders/Caps Multi OT game in 1987 as did not have digital cable access back then. However I remember the next morning on that Sunday, ABC News This Week (their weekly public affairs political/news oriented talk show)Program Anchored by their 1st host David Brinkley actually doing a brief 2 minute segment during the news headline segment at the start of their show. Including the amount of mileage every player skated on both teams. 😮
First NHL game i really paid attention to was Ottawa-Pittsburgh game 7 2017. I remember being on the edge of my seat the entire time and felt awful for the sens, love the tension of playoff overtime
No dog in the fight but I was incredibly nervous during the end of last nights' game. Fell asleep during OT1, woke up during OT3 and was shocked the game was still going. I was wired for the last two OT periods. It was fun watching Gretzky try and hang on through intermissions and post game as he was fighting off sleep. I'll definitely remember this one. I feel bad for the hockey snobs that said they wouldn't watch the rest of the season because only sunbelt teams are left. Watching Ryan Hartman's 2OT winner earlier this playoffs was a thrill. The season ended as a disappointment but staying up until 2AM to watch the end was a great memory. The joy/dispair/relief of a multiple OT game ender is something that other sports can't recreate as well.
As an up and coming Wings fan back in 2002, 8 year old me was blessed to see that 3OT game against Carolina in the 2002 Finals where Igor Larionov got the winner. Still one of the best games I've ever watched.
Freshman year of high school - absolutely pissed when Primeau beat Tugnutt. Fast forward 20 years and Brayden Point rips out my heart. However, my favorite has to be CBJ beating WSH in game 1 during 2018. Panarin’s finish was just nuts
My personal favorite OT game as a Bolts fan is pretty obvious. I was maybe five when game six against the Flames happened so I don’t have to many memories of that, but when that five OT game happened it felt so different to anything I’ve ever seen. It was the first time in my time being a fan of the Bolts that it felt like we truly clutched. Sure we had OT winners before but whenever the Bolts won it was because they outplayed the other team, if they got down often the Bolts would fail to get back into the game or they would fail to sustain pressure, and in clutch situation 9/10 they failed. That game felt like I was watching a different team, and I was. The team that was born from that game and the team before it are two completely different squads if you catch my drift.
That Islander - Capital game was epic. Still rememeber Mason's reaction, like you said. GOAL magazines cover had overhead view of Mason and the puck in the net with the heading "CAPITAL PUNISHMENT"
Never change a thing about playoff overtime! I’m a Devils fan and watched that whole game. Watched all the other games on that list that happened after 1993. My dad and I both live for those games.
As much as I wanted the game to end so I could get to bed, I WASN'T gonna go to bed till the game was over because it truly is an epic and classic experience for NHL hockey. For Playoffs, a game shouldn't get artificially ended, and a team sport should finish as a team sport.
I remember the Easter Epic well. We were supposed to drive down from NY to DC for the game... friend in Maryland had tickets but my car broke down before we even got out of NY. We wound up at my local bar that had satellite tv showing the game. As the night wore on, more and more people became mesmerized with the game.... 2 AM, in a bar, on Easter morning, packed with patrons, half of which were Ranger fans, all glued to the epic that became The Easter Epic.
The Islanders deserved that win. They didn't have much talent and came back after being down 3-1 in the series against a seriously dirty Capitals team. Recall, Bobby Nystrom was an Assistant Coach with AL in that game!
There’s just something so special about watching games like these. They never get old or boring for me. If they changed the format for situations like this, hockey just wouldn’t be the same.
Game one of the cup final 2013 - Boston - Chicago. First season I started cheering for the Bruins. Being a Latvian, I was a fan of Kaspars Daugavins, who did not score on a breakaway in triple OT. That game started at 3AM for me, ended around 8:30. I still believed that is when Boston lost the cup that year. These marathon OT games are what makes the playoffs so exciting.
The OT game that sticks out to me was Dallas' win over Buffalo in I think it was game 6 cup final (don't remember the year I was young), it was one of the first times my dad let me stay up super late and watched Modano put in the game winner and Dallas lifting the cup.
That Canucks Stars series was nuts. Luongo was great...but Turco had 3 shutouts that series lol. I went to games 3 and 4 in Dallas. I had a perfect view of Willie Mitchell making a huge save off the goal line.
The game and goal that really sold hockey to me: Game 1 of the 2013 WCQF against the kings, Alexander Steens OT goal. That goal I still one of my favorites to watch. The suddenness of it and the announcers losing their mind still gets me super hyped.
My favorite multi overtime game memory is the Easter Epic when the Islanders beat the Capitals in that game 7, amazing effort by both teams to play that long in a 7th game and extra kudos to Bob Mason and Kelly Hrudey for all those saves under a lot of pressure
I know it might not be a good memory for you, but game one of the 2013 Stanley Cup Finals between the Hawks and Bruins is my favorite long overtime game. My family had a viewing party with some friends, but the party was cut short due to a huge thunderstorm that caused a power outage at our house. Our friends only lived 3-4 minutes away, so we thought we could try to move the party to their house where they still had power from their generator. However as we were in the car trying to leave, a tree in our front yard blew down in our driveway and we couldn’t leave. The power at our house eventually came back on, but the tv signal was still bad from the storm. My family ended up watching a good portion of the game huddled around my sister’s laptop where she found a stream of the game. I just remember how crazy of a night that was and on top of that the game just so happened to go into triple overtime. The best part about it was the Hawks finally winning lol.
My favorite OT Playoff game was Colorado over Florida to secure the Stanley Cup. As a Colorado fan, out first cup will always be special, and that game made it even more special.
People also forget the games that go beyond 2-3 overtimes are super rare. I remember with the 2003 series between the ducks and the stars, game 2 also went into overtime, add it seems like everybody was thinking “here we go again” and I think everybody was relieved when Game 2 ended in the first overtime period 😂
I seem to recall the Flyers/Pens 5OT game that I didn't have cable at the time, and ESPN stopped updating the website after 3OT. And I was not on the ball and didn't check a Canadian site. So I had to wait for morning to find out what happened.
The Flyers Pens and Stars Ducks are always fond memories for me because both games I had to work early the next day and got 2 or 3 hours sleep before work
I was watching the IIHF World Championships yesterday on the TSN feed which is the feed we get in the UK. They mentioned the longest game was in Sweden in SHL which went to 8 OT Periods which is the Record for a Hockey game.
From personal experience: Watching on TV: NY Islanders vs. Philadelphia, Stanley Cup Final, Game 6 1980. In-person: Isles vs. Canucks, SC Final Game 1, 1982. Both games went into 1 OT, with the 1982 game ending with Mike Bossy's goal at 19:58.
I'm from Europe and was thinking about watching game one between Florida and Carolina because I have may off days right now. But I was too tired from an exhausting last day at work. After I got up and saw what happened I thought well, I could've started breakfast during the rest of the OT(s). 😎
As a Kings fan watching the Kings beat the Rangers in double overtime of game 6 in the 2012 Finals was awesome! What a great way to win the Stanley Cup! Especially at home in front of your home crowd! 🎉
I was in college for the Islanders game. One of my roommates came in and saw the game and thought it was highlights. Nope. He left Long Island after the third period and drove to Massachusetts and the game was still on when he arrived.
Honourable mention to the most thrilling overtime victory the Team Canada Gold Medal in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver! Edge of the seat hockey followed by the loudest screams, horns and cheers the city had ever heard!
I was busy last night until the third OT. I was glad I stayed up until 1 AM to see the end, although if it went another OT, I probably would have had to go to sleep. I'd stay up all night for the Wild, but for anyone else, even FLA or NSH, probably can't make that reach unless it's the SCF.
Jackets fan here. That game was in the afternoon during the week. The next game had to get pushed back until the next day. I had just turned the game on when my wife went to work. She came home and was wondering why I was still watching the Jackets game.
That is what ruins great matches in soccer(World Football)especially those that go to Extra Time(aka OT) as well. That Excellent 2022 World Cup Final would have nice to have at least 1-2 more OT periods instead of ending it in a shootout with Penalty Kicks.
Exactly. Could you imagine the winner of the Stanley Cup being decided by a skills competition? Ugh. It's already bad enough seeing playoff positioning being decided by skills competitions.
My father stayed up to listen on the radio, to the Montreal Maroons vs Detroit Red Wings, six overtime game. The game ended at 2:30 A.M.! He was real hockey fan. He could tell stories about the rivalry between the Wings and the Canadians in the 1950's. The Canadians got so mad at losing in the finals to the Red Wings, they refused to shake hands with the Wings after the Wings won the Stanley from Montreal.
+1 million. These types of games are GREAT for fans. The media is always going to complain about ad revenue, and the players/arena staff/etc have valid complaints. But fans should be overjoyed at seeing exciting, close hockey.
My favorite OT game for me is either Pominville's Game 5 OT series winner against Ottawa in 2006 or Afinogenov's OT winner in Game 5 against the Rangers in 2007. Two incredible moments in Sabres history.
I wish they had the FLA CAR one on ESPN+ instead of the DAL VGK one. Growing the game in the US would be an effect from having the playoffs accessible to those without cable!
I fell asleep watching the flyers and pens game. My mom kept the game on because she knew I would want to know. I woke up around 1 in the morning and the game was still going. I got excited to keep watching it and about three minuetes later the flyers destroyed me by scoring.
I would think this game garnered a lot more views and headlines in media because it was so unusual. So new people got exposed to hockey because of it. Maybe their initial view is it being crazy, but now they know the game exists and might look into it further. Ofc I dearly hope there won't be another 4OT game these playoffs, because my brain couldn't handle it.
These long overtime playoff games are part of the reason why I love playoff hockey.

Hoping that's a moment that grips my son to the game the same way I have been for 25 years
ARTTURI! ARTTURI! ARTTURI!!!
2000- Stanley Cup Finals
NJ vs Dallas. Brodeur vs Belfour
3 OT
1 - O Dallas with Modano getting the game winner to force game 6. ( I was there, it was brutal)
Game 6 NJ won in 2 OT to win The Stanley Cup.
One of the great things about Shannon's channel is that occasionally he'll share his inner feelings with us. It's not surprising to me that all of us are so similar. If you love hockey, you gotta love the epic games.
Still remember that epic save by Nabakov in that #10 game where the Sharks lost to Dallas.
Hawks vs kings game 7 in 2014 western conference finals. That was epic series and actually was better than the finals itself
7:04 Can relate to that 100%. My dad and I dont have a great relationship but when hockey is on we get along well, and we bond over the local NHL team
I remember that Pens/Flyers game in 2000. I was nine years old watching on our tiny 12” tv with its antenna. It was awesome
That Anaheim vs Dallas game last month was crazy!! Peter Sykora still got it!
I'd love to see a video series explaining your personal history of why you cheer for who you cheer for. Especially about the Stars!
He explained in a video earlier this month. The Stars he started rooting for when they were still the North Stars.
@@doomhermit awesome, do you know the video title?
The OT game that sticks out to me was Dallas' win over Buffalo in I think it was game 6 cup final (don't remember the year I was young), it was one of the first times my dad let me stay up super late and watched Modano put in the game winner and Dallas lifting the cup.
That's 1999 and Brett hull scored the controversial goal 3ot
@@TheSpeedophile76 Oh, yah.. god my memory is bad..
That Canucks Stars series was nuts. Luongo was great...but Turco had 3 shutouts that series lol.
I went to games 3 and 4 in Dallas. I had a perfect view of Willie Mitchell making a huge save off the goal line.
Anaheim making the finals in 2023? Of course Shannon knows! He’s in cahoots with Bettman!
Shannon accidentally leaked the script
😂 I was thinking the same thing
It was nothing special probably. Otherwise we'd remember that
The game and goal that really sold hockey to me: Game 1 of the 2013 WCQF against the kings, Alexander Steens OT goal. That goal I still one of my favorites to watch. The suddenness of it and the announcers losing their mind still gets me super hyped.
Favorite OT game I've ever watched? Avs over Florida to win cup in 1996. Uwe Krupp from the point.
What a Tremendous jersey Shannon! Love these deep dives into parts of hockey not often looked at. LGRW 🐙 🏒 🤘
THANKS!!!!
My favorite OT Playoff game was Colorado over Florida to secure the Stanley Cup. As a Colorado fan, out first cup will always be special, and that game made it even more special.
I definitely felt that 14:25 vibe in the 2012 ECF when Henrique ended the series for the Devils over NYR
Brayden Points OT winner, as a Lightning fan, will always be one of my favourite memories watching hockey.
That 4OT game between the Stars and Sharks was crazy.
Nabokov’s save and then Morrow breaking the hearts of many sharks fans.
The Flyers Pens and Stars Ducks are always fond memories for me because both games I had to work early the next day and got 2 or 3 hours sleep before work
hearing about how shannon shared memories of games with his dad makes me sad and wish i did the same more. I think i’ll start today, thank you
I was watching the IIHF World Championships yesterday on the TSN feed which is the feed we get in the UK. They mentioned the longest game was in Sweden in SHL which went to 8 OT Periods which is the Record for a Hockey game.
In Czech league they managed 7 OT just this season.
My Dad’s older brother was at the Petr Nedved game. If you bring it up a palpable feeling of disgust emanates off of him still.
My first taste of hockey was the 1996 playoffs, so I've gotta say it was when Uwe Krupp finally put Florida to bed a few days before my 9th birthday.
I thought that was an incredibly weak goal and underwhelming end to a game of that calibre.
Nicely done Shannon.
As an Oilers fan my favourite long OT was Oilers-Bruins in the 1990 SCF. RIP Petr Klima.
The Gilmour wrap around and the Mayday call. Both from 93. Best OT's ever. Best playoff year ever.
Let's do it again tonight, Vegas vs Dallas!
My favorite O.T. game, is the Keith Primeau wining goal, O.T. game.
It worked for me today I got a basketball fan to watch west coast game 1 tonight and watch highlights for last nights game.
Jackets fan here. That game was in the afternoon during the week. The next game had to get pushed back until the next day.
I had just turned the game on when my wife went to work. She came home and was wondering why I was still watching the Jackets game.
I don’t know what the other format would be but I personally would hate to see playoff games decided by shootouts. Continuous OT is so exciting.
Was there a Penguin that played on the 1996 and 2000 teams? I wonder if they were on the rink both times 😩
CFCF or CKVL?
+1 million. These types of games are GREAT for fans. The media is always going to complain about ad revenue, and the players/arena staff/etc have valid complaints. But fans should be overjoyed at seeing exciting, close hockey.
The Easter Epic...If you are a Caps fan that one is just seared into your brain. I still remember the look on Rod Langway as the winning goal went in.
I remember watching that 1987 game.....so memorable
Went to the game last night, amazing atmosphere the whole time.
the might ducks of Anaheim in 2023. is this a fever dream?
Turco posted 3 shutouts in that 07 matchup, cant really say he cant win in the playoffs
@Shannon You had a typo on the Petr Sykora game winner versus Dallas. It should be 2003, not 2023!
My favorite OT game for me is either Pominville's Game 5 OT series winner against Ottawa in 2006 or Afinogenov's OT winner in Game 5 against the Rangers in 2007. Two incredible moments in Sabres history.
Back in 2017 a game in the norwegian leaugue had 8 OT's
My favorite OT moment is Chris Kunitz’s Double OT Winner in Game 7 against the Ottawa Senators!
The OT format is fine and the game last night was epic.
I didn’t get home from the canes game until after 4 AM. ☀️ ☕️
