I'm glad you found it helpful, and I am truly sorry about your hands. If you do need to tune your instrument again, you should consider a tuning hammer: amzn.to/3oM79E6
Your welcome! With the app you can tune the instrument to pretty much any key and have it setup how you like it, you can even tune it to the traditional kalimba tuning: A F D C E G B 😊
Only if you want to play a nice tune with all te notes in it. This will do. You can also go for a scale. Like pentatonic or akebono tuning. Also I love to go through the scale right left right left right left right. Or the other way around if you’re left handed.
I am so glad that I was able to help you tune your coconut thumb piano and hope that you found this video useful. I have realised a better way to tune these instruments and will make a video on it soon. For now, I just wanted to share that if you feel comfortable you can loosen the screws to make the tines easier to move but you should only do this if you feel confident that you can tune the instrument yourself, if anyone is still struggling, I want you to know that we now offer a budget kalimba tuning service which you can order here: www.carvedculture.com/products/kalimba-tuning-service
Awesome! Thanks for the tips to the best notes to tune the.. Fork things 😊 I am a guitar player but knowing the best tuning for this coconut thing I had no clue
No problem happy to help, just to let you know that this video is quite old and there are other ways to tune it that are probably easier. I am planning to make an updated video soon!
Thanks for this! I bought one from an Indian (Native American) pow-wow (probably spelling that wrong) some years ago and I played with it but not with any intent, just screwing around. It was way out out tune in the 2nd octave range, so now it's set to this tuning. 1 question though; I'm a music novice but I noticed your b is 3rd while the rest are 4th? Intentional or oversight at the time?
The notes are meant to be tuned to 4th as you said. This was a little mistake when tuning but mainly the video was intended to show people how to tune their instrument as this is a question we get a lot. Hope you found it helpful though :)
Hello, the notes do not have to be tuned in that order, technically they can be tuned in any order that you want. If I could remake this video I would have stuck to a typical kalimba tuning from left to right A F D C E G B just to make it easier when transitioning to a full size instrument but yes you could tune A to G 😊
This is a type of kalimba that is known as a thumb piano. Are the notes of your mini kalimba marked? If so, you can open the app, pluck the note and tune it until it matches your instruments tines.
🥥 🎶 ❤️ Thank you so much for this fantastic and easy tutorial to tune this fun instrument! I've also enjoyed your videos of individual songs, and looking forward to more of those! Now that my kalimba thingy is all tuned up, and my fingers are all bandaged.... 🩹 I'm looking for more music to play! 🥰 All of the books of music online are for an 8 key version. 😕 Any suggestions? Are you (hopefully 🙏) creating a songbook too? Any Beatles songs? 😉
Thanks for this, do i have to download the pro version of the app? I only donwloaded the free version and I tried to tune my kalimba for 3hours but i still don't get it. 😔 My fingers are wounded lol HAHAHAHAHA
I use the free version and it works fine for me, sorry about your fingers though, you can get a special tuning hammer to make it easier, I've put a link in the description for you :)
Keep trying but if it becomes difficult take a break, these little instruments can be really difficult to tune and even though the times are not positioned in the usual way, it’s the music that matters, try to do very gentle movements of the tine, good luck 🤞
hello!i liked this tutorial!is it ok if i do the same thing on my acrylic kalimba km dumb tbh i forgot to order an tuning hammer so of my parents found out theyll say i just wasted my money omg :((
I'm glad you liked the tutorial, we have more kalimba videos coming soon so please make sure to hit that subscribe button. Also, the acrylic kaimba should be fine as long as the tines are the same. I dont think a tuning hammer is needed but there is no harm in having one.
Great question, I would recommend tuning it with each note excluding: B - the problem is that specific songs will need that note and when you get to those you can retune that note and swap it for another, I hope this was helpful.
They should be green, if they are orange it means that the note is slightly out of tune. The closer you get to the green section the better and truer the sound to the correct note 😊
Yes there are plenty of tuning apps, in fact, we recently wrote a blog post called the best kalimba apps, you can check it out here: www.carvedculture.com/blogs/articles/the-best-kalimba-apps
Hi do I have to turn in the instrument tuner. It's asking for an additional charge which is fine but was wondering if I could tune without that feature?
Great question, you should be able to tune it without the instrument tuner, a guitar tuner should be fine although I haven’t used that app for a while and so it might be outdated, I will check this for you and get back to you as soon as possible though 😊
Great questions! This video shows you how to tune it to C Major, with this tuning you will be able to play most songs and can even transpose songs to the key of C, if however you want to play specific songs in their original key you will have to change some notes to a sharp note instead.
Hi Coline, I'm not 100% sure because whilst the instrument looks like it could be tuned, the tines do look shorter. What id recommend is download the tuning app and have a look at how far the notes are away from the desired notes. Good luck 🙂
Thanks about 2 days ago at bearded theory (festival) I found one of these with a whale of the front it was 8.50 but because it was the last night they gave me the smallest one for a fiver not I see the tune notes though something was a little weird but using this app it's all OK thanks 5 star video rating. ⭐⭐🌟⭐⭐
Great question, as the kalimba only has 5 notes it won't be able to cover a full octave and so the best bet would be to custom tune it depending on the song that you want to play. If you tuned the instrument to (C,D,E,F,G) you would be losing notes A and B. Another option would be tune the kalimba to the pentatonic scale (typical for blues music), you only need these five notes: A, C, D, E, G
At the time of making this video there was nothing on the internet on how to tune the thumb piano and this video has helped a lot of people but yes you are right the way the notes are tuned is inconvenient and not how a typical kalimba is set out. I am going to experiment to see if it is possible to get a conventional tuning and will make an updated video, watch this space 😊
The instrument is called a kalimba, mbira, thumb piano, sanza, marimba and goes by many other names depending on what country you are from. Whilst it originally began as a Mbira from Africa, it was developed into the Kalimba by someone called Hugh Tracey. From then the kalimba spread around the world but in different regions it is called different things. This specific instrument is made from half a coconut by artisans in Bali, Indonesia and I'm sorry to tell you this but the artisans who made it decided to call it a 'Coconut thumb piano' and so we respect their wishes.
If u listen carefully throughout the video, u will find he doesn’t call it just a ‘thumb piano’, but puts the word Kalimba after ‘thumb piano’ (therefore calling it a ‘thumb piano kalimba’, or if going into more detail I think he called it a ‘coconut thumb piano kalimba’ at one stage).
So my Kalimba is tuned to each key correctly, yet it sounds off. When seeing some simple tabs, many of the notes played sound off or very different. What do I need to do to fix it?
That's unusual, sadly without seeing the instrument I wouldn't be able to recommend. Feel free to send us an email with a photo or video of your instrument; info@carvedculture.com - I will do my best to help you or if you are living in England, I would be happy for you to send it to me and I'll get it tuned and send it back? - Ryan

Never been interested in music, gf got me this, had it tuned in 15 minutes, absolutely marvelous
Amazing, glad to have been able to help :)
This helped a lot thank you :) my hands are like- bleeding lol

thankyou! I did it with my hand😅 now my hand hurts😂😂😂 but it's alright, now i can play my kalimba✨
Sorry about the hand but it's great that you can play now!
Adjust screws
Thank youuu !! I scoured the internet to know to which notes I was supposed to tune it ! :)

Yes, I couldn't agree more. This kind of instrument is really good for producers because it's easy to custom tune to a specific scale (;

@@CarvedCulture I did find this video very helpful, so thank you again. I wanted to clarify that little detail as I am a total novice at this. 😋
Thank you for this! Such a pretty sound :)
Glad you like it, you are very welcome :)
You’re the best for this !!!!
Thank you so much!
I'm using the same app and finding it impossible to tune. I'm confident it's my instrument though. Could you share the frequency (Hz) you're tuned to?
Sorry to hear that buddy, im not sure on the exact frequency but stick with it and hopefully you'll get there.
You can look up the frequencies
Thx so much his is so helpful to me and others alike
Glad to hear that, thanks for watching :)
Thanks! Mine is on a bunch of sharps and i thought that was wrong
Awesome, glad to have helped!!
Why do the notes have to be tuned to that order? Would it not be easier just to go from left to right A B C D E F G? Is that possible?
Hello, the notes do not have to be tuned in that order, technically they can be tuned in any order that you want. If I could remake this video I would have stuck to a typical kalimba tuning from left to right A F D C E G B just to make it easier when transitioning to a full size instrument but yes you could tune A to G 😊
is this a kalimba? How do I tune mini kalimba with Ins Tuner App?

Having the exact same problem
Currently trying to tune B, It keeps going from C# to A#, I can't get to D and it's been like an hour. :((

Hi! I was gifted a coconut kalimba but it only has 6 tines-- what would be the best way to tune it? aka which note should i leave out? Thank you!!
Great question, I would recommend tuning it with each note excluding: B - the problem is that specific songs will need that note and when you get to those you can retune that note and swap it for another, I hope this was helpful.
should both of the squares be green on the app or is it ok if they stay orange?
They should be green, if they are orange it means that the note is slightly out of tune. The closer you get to the green section the better and truer the sound to the correct note 😊

Hi im trying to tune my kalimba but my problem us that i pushed it up too far what do i do
Your best bet is to use a tuning app and adjust the tine until it reaches the right note :)
Is this it's default tune setting or for other tunes we have to tune it accordingly

Tuner pitched 😊
Is it the same with acrylic kalimba (8 key)

Hi! I have an old 5 notes Kalimba. Would you suggest a typical tuning?
The lower notes seem to be tuned in E-A-C, the other seem to be out of tune...

If you're going to have an entire channel dedicated to an instrument then learn what it's called. It's called a Kalimba
Neos Castillo it can also be called a thumb piano, chill
This is a specific kind of Kalimba. Called a coconut thumb piano.
The instrument is called a kalimba, mbira, thumb piano, sanza, marimba and goes by many other names depending on what country you are from. Whilst it originally began as a Mbira from Africa, it was developed into the Kalimba by someone called Hugh Tracey.
