First off, I review the purpose of a hook and talk about the importance of a first impression. In this part, I tell you the BEST time to write your hook as well! Second, I review how to start your essay off with a question that engages the reader. Third, I talk about how to describe an imaginary situation to grab the attention of your reader. Fourth, I go over how to cite a quote and I tell you a MAJOR pitfall I see students fall into all the time! Fifth, I review the start of my video to show you an example of how to start your introduction with a hook. I also provide questions to help you review, revise, and edit your hook. After watching this video, you should have a great idea of how to start your essay off with an ATTENTION GRABBING hook in your introduction paragraph!

Some teachers are against question hooks but I am for them if you use them the correct way. Basically, ask a question that will relate and engage the reader to think about your topic.

Hi Mr. Messinger! I love your videos. I've been watching them to help with writing essays for my English class. Do you have any ideas on how to write a hook for an argumentative essay on The Crucible? My essay is on how certain concepts from the book are still relevant today, such as intolerance, greed and reputation. What could be a good hook for that? Thank you!

To be honest, I have never read the book but here are a couple thoughts:
1.) Don’t worry about your hook until after you write your entire essay. A lot of times, the hook will naturally appear when you are done.
2.) I would avoid a question hook-it is a bit overused.
3.) Maybe describe briefly how we see some of those things in 2021-maybe find a recent news story that displays those themes.
4.) you could also give a stat that shows how many people struggle with those things
5.) The key thing is to tie the theme from your hook into your conclusion. For example, maybe challenge the reader to fight against those tendencies. That way the whole essay is connected.

Thanks Chris. First you want to break down your topic or question, I have a video on that. Then figure out the answer and write your thesis. Once you write your thesis, then write each of your topic sentences. From there, you can write each paragraph. Then come back to your hook and background information when you write your conclusion. I have videos for most of those thing. Hope it helps.

I really like this and i know it helps a lot of ppl but as a fifth grader who has to write a whole essay in one day it feels really hard and every paragraph i write is a new subject around ellis island it helps but i know it helps ppl a lot more than me which makes me happy

I have a quick question, So I turned in my essay and mind you there was a 3 paragraph passage given to us by the teacher surrounding the main focus of the essay, which I used quotation marks around the statements that was in the passage and I didn't say "the author wrote" or the author said this with some of the statements given, (I think the first one I did) but I'm worried about getting plagiarized checked.
Would I? My apologies for the top comment being all over the place, I'm just freaking out a bit😅
It is best practice to state the author's name, page #, title, etc. because just quotes doesn't cite the source. I imagine you would get marked down points for incorrectly citing but I wouldn't think you would get flagged for plagiarism.
If you are worried, you can also email your teacher. You can explain your thought process and if I were your teacher, I would hear you out.

I was wondering if you knew how to do hooks for papers. I’m doing a paper on world events that happened in the summer that effect me. How would I make a hook for that? My teacher said it can’t be a question either. I can’t think of “Imagine….” type hooks for my hook.

Have you ever wondered what bravery is? During the Odyssey there are many character traits, the most important trait, in my opinion, would be bravery. Odysseus blinded a cyclops and had killed the suitors? In the Odyssey the night when Odysseus and his men decided to show bravery and put a log in the cyclops' eye and blinded it. Odysseus kills the suitors when he had the time to kill them all and that shows bravery and who's boss.
During the odyssey, Odysseus' most important trait is bravery which shows when he blinded the Cyclops and killed the suitors.
