  • With eleven premium OSC Models within the SH-4d Synthesizer, you’ll have no shortage of sound design possibilities at your disposal. From vintage analog and PCM-based sounds to futuristic digital tones, new ideas are just a button press away. In this video, hear Dustin Good demonstrate each OSC Model and let your imagination run wild.
    0:00 INTRO
0:31 SH-4d Model: Build thick vintage analog sounds with up to four different waveforms, each with independent settings for tuning, pulse width, and more.
1:14 SH-3D Model: Swap out the fourth oscillator for an extra LFO for deeper modulation possibilities.
1:47 Sync Model: Create oscillator sync tones with evolving harmonic richness and powerful envelope control using nine different waveforms plus sliders for detuning and changing pitch envelope.
2:25 SH-101 Model: Bring iconic basses, leads, and plucks to life using an interface that recreates the experience of the original SH-101 OSC section.
3:09 JUNO-106 Model: Dive into the distinctive sounds of one of the most iconic polysynths of all time using the familiar OSC controls and lush chorus.
3:36 Cross FM Model: Craft crisp modern textures with this two-operator model. Then, take it further with additional waveform and modulation settings.
4:37 Ring Model: Channel bold metallic textures via crossfade parameters, waveshapes, tuning, and more using two oscillators with selectable waveshapes.
5:12 Wavetable Model: Coax and program complex morphing tonalities using 31 unique wavetables.
6:04 Chord Model: Play and program complex chord changes with single notes, simple slider movements to change chord types or voicings, and selectable waveshapes.
6:53 Drawing Model: Design your own waveforms and build new sounds using the sliders, buttons, and encoders.
7:26 PCM Model: Explore 53 unique PCM waves from Roland’s historic library, which can be mixed with up to four layers.
The dedicated rhythm section has 49 presets kits and 64 slots for storing your own. Plus, you get 26 instruments per kit, each with up to two layered waveforms, dedicated EQs, and synthesis tools for designing custom drum sounds from scratch.
    About the SH-4d
The SH-4d Synthesizer is a powerhouse desktop instrument with hands-on workflow and deep synthesis tools for designing the sounds of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Spur spontaneous musical moments with the multitimbral sequencer, extensive effects, and plenty of polyphony. And with the loaded front panel, dynamic controls, motion recording, and more, you can transform ideas into short loops or complete songs as quickly as your ideas come.

Workflow and usability has always been Roland's achilles heel - looks like that's changing now! This is their best groovebox yet, but they're trying to position it as "just a multitimbral synthesizer with five parts, plenty of onboard effects and a pretty competent sequencer" - aka a groovebox. 😉 Please Roland, finish the work on the sequencer so it supports 128 steps, microtiming and more automation lanes / parameter locks! And then just work a little on the file/save management of tones and patterns by turning them into proper projects. With just 5% more work, you will have created your best groovebox ever. 🧡

    Four firmware petitions:
1- fix the midi over usb problem when you slave sh4D on Ableton Live and gets double tempo.
2- be able to capture external audio thru 'Mix In' instead internal mixing.
3- double the steps count per pattern from 64 to 128.
    4- Increase pattern/patches memory.
    Make this machine flawless, please.

    • @noth606
      @noth606 6 місяців тому

I suspect you'd need to speak using some form of understandable consistent terminology to get an answer... I'm guessing you maybe mean volume/output power, if so I can only wonder why, since it's not meant to drive external speakers. Neither is any other synth I'm aware of. There are some synths with speakers, but they are a very different class of device, the only somewhat advanced one I can think of being the CT-S1000V but it's a totally different kind of thing. I'm not sure why that has speakers, other than that it *can* be used as a standalone thing completely should you want to take it to the park with friends and pretend it's a kids toy style thing I guess...

The first Roland synth I'm even vaguely interested in, owing to it not involving the usual Roland rabbit hole of menu diving (usually on an inadequate screen). This looks a solid offering. However, those "backlit Skittles" (© Bad Gear) really suck as a keybed. I don't need physical keys, but non-key keybeds have been done so much better e.g. Sonicware ELZ_1. Also, what on earth is the deal with that missing D-flat?

Sounds like the reason I just paid off my Tr-8s today and will never touch this confused instrument. Groovebox or synth- make up your mind please.

Why is Roland still using displays from 1990?

Thank God these are "premium" oscs, according to the video description. And here we were, fearing they would be "non-premium" oscs. ROFL

It's rather hard to charge Roland prices for non-premium OSCs....

Congrats Roland - it's lovely and lively. Plenty onboard to play with for decades. My wish list is short. I wish it could load user content (pcm samples and wave tables) - And no Jupiter Oscillator models? Maybe in an update? And if it takes 4xAA batteries, shouldn't it have a speaker? And polyphony is 60 voices? In 2023? Time will tell if that's too limiting. I'd have hoped for 128.

Taking into account how limited is polyphony in Fantom range, a polyphonyin SH-4d is even more limited which makes it useless in multitrack setup.

This device is very cool mainly due to its layering ability something missing from most sythersizors of this size. £544 seems a good price.

You're telling me there's only 4 pcm sounds and 1 Wavetable?
