- The SH-4d Synthesizer is a desktop powerhouse with a hands-on workflow and deep synthesis tools for designing the sounds of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. This future retro synth is packed with eleven OSC Models enabling a diverse range of sound-design possibilities, including vintage analog synths-like the SH-4d, SH-101, and JUNO-106 Models-and cutting-edge digital tones, such as Wavetable, Cross FM, and Drawing Models.
You’ll never run out of musical ideas thanks to the multitimbral sequencer with four synth parts plus a rhythm part, plenty of polyphony, and extensive effects. And hands-on controls allow for free-flowing sound design with custom sliders for patch tweaks, robust knobs for parameter adjustments and motion recording, plus keyboard buttons for playing and sequencing.
In this video, learn about the world of sounds and tactile workflow found within the SH-4d Synthesizer.

Four firmware petitions:
1- fix the midi over usb problem when you slave sh4D on Ableton Live and gets double tempo.
2- be able to capture external audio thru 'Mix In' instead internal mixing.
3- double the steps count per pattern from 64 to 128.
4- Increase pattern/patches memory.
Make this machine flawless, please.
This looks great. I love the balance it strikes between being an immediate, intuitive sketch pad and having more serious sound design capabilities.
I'm so stoked I've been looking for a synth groovebox like this for ages!!!
Fantastic. I remember trying out the Juno 106 and SH101 back in the day. I couldn't afford them but I loved the analog sounds. This new model has caught my interest.
The coolest thing I’ve seen in a long time. Great stuff Roland I’ll be getting one.
Very cool , Roland finally got a screen you can actually see in a live environment. This is the screen that shoulda been on the 8s.
The JD-XA couldve used this screen as well, ridiculous two line LCD red screen
sounds like this is the best digital synth you've ever made to date!
This is going too be massive
A definite purchase, although I read in the manual that the USB audio cannot currently be used to record the 'Mix In' input, hope Roland can change this in a future update, it would be super helpful to be able to record the external instrument along with the multi tracks if hooking upto the computer when having a jam
Legal. Parece que juntaram os três Aira Compact recentemente lançados em um aparelho só. Isso é bom.
2:13 - DAMN! Great! 👏👏👏
2:52 - Juno 106. So good!
5:30 - Wow, another superb funtion. OSC Draw mode.
Fantastic little synth and content price.
This looks pretty cool. And under $1000 is even better. Love the size too.
Awesome! You guys are listening! Looks like a direct attack on Elektron.
That looks champion, that chap talking’s a right Bobby Wazzler
Reminds me of both JD800 and JP8080 with nods to popular vintage polys
Genuinely very cool
Wow - looks awesome! instant classic
Would have like to have seen more outputs, but like what I see and hear
You guys have an absolute hit on your hands. The features and Form factor is ace!
What's the difference between a "hit" and an "absolute hit", apart from one being absolute? Not sure if "Form" needs an uppercase letter either.
@@X22GJP yikes.

I've had the MC 707 but I found the user interface too complicated. Now this looks interesting!
4d is the hexadecimal equivalent of 77 so maybe this is for you.
Well... This sounds awesome. 5-Track sequencer included! 11 Soundengines. AND different color diodes! I like different colored little lights on a synth. Visual Arp (Great!)
Sounds really good
Roland is putting out some awesome gear. This would make an incredible virtual instrument also.
Nice live jam product.
6:33 including a drum machine = good! (Could the sliders be used to control relative volume of drums, as with TR6s?)
This is a winner, great job guys!!
Great ideas have gone into this. Imagine the mojo this thing would have had if they could of made it analog.
@@rationalthinker1 Indeed. My thinking when I saw the SH-4d for the first time was why didn't Roland put a real analog SH-101 circuit inside instead of letting Behringer keep eating their lunch with their Roland analog clones. Thinking along the lines of the JD-Xi and the JD-XA which combined analog and digital sections to great effect. However having now purchased and used the SH-4d I feel Roland have done a great job with the SH-101 and the Juno and for the money the whole unit is good value and good fun. The user interface could have been better thought out in some areas but hopefully some improvements will be made in firmware updates.
Looks great...
Can you please make an detailed tutorial how to use it? I found it very helpful for the TR6S that you made.
Крутой синт! ждем!
Are you kidding me? The music tech coming out lately is insane. The next generation of music is going to be something. This will pair nicely with my TR-8S.
I was thinking about pairing it with my TR8S - I’m only just getting into that. Can you tell me more about your reasons, ideas? Do you think it will be a perfect match ?
@@chrisbaron70 I haven't purchased the SH-4D yet. Just getting familiar with synths so I just bought the Behringer MS-1 to get started. Wanted to go the traditional route first before getting complex with the 4D. I do like the idea of having two similar Roland products that look compact and similar size together. One day..
Especially since you can get essentially the same thing in a free VST.. ..Or with a Access Virus..
This looks much more accessible than the Jupiter XM. I’m going to give it a go.
Thanks for the Video. It would be good to know if a synth pattern can be transposed by semitones and how this is done. Ideally having a pattern transposed by a sequence of triggers.
Ahh a SH-32 revamp. That thing was steppy back then.
Nice!
Lo quierooooooo!!!!!🖤🖤🖤
Is it possible to cue (pre-listen) the different parts via the headphone output separately from the main output, like on the MC-707? And if not, is there a chance to add this in a software update? That would be great for live jams!
It’s a beast
The only that I would
Have changed is - Instead of the 4 arrow button on the left a nice 3d endless encoder for turbo fast scrolling
Great job Roland. Perfect.
That's just perfect! The Dream of a musician 😍 Is it anyhow compatible with Zenology?
nice , seems very cool ... kinda wish the mix in audio could pass threw the fx .. but still awesome unit
Is there possibility in modulation matrix to set target to SuperSAW detune so It could be real time controlled (there is no CC for this)?
I can't find any information about pattern chaining on the fly. When using the Roland SH-4d, can you switch between patters without to lose the rhythm, as you can do with the Roland Compact S1, for instance?
Why all your screens have to be of such a low quality? Is it a cost decision? They can't be that expensive nowadays.
Screens hahe
DAMN
2:42 only the osc are modelled is my understanding ?
HELP : is there a way to get the mix-in channel into the usb (to record in a DAW for example) ?
The retro look is cool af
Is it compatible with the MX-1 Aira USB Host?
Looks like I'll be having several Roland products again. Looking really hard at the Jupiter XM and possibly this to start a DAWless setup along with an Akai MPC Live 2
The xm is a huge pain, and buried beneath layers of menu only visible through a 4" screen
Just picked up a used XM. Sounds fantastic. Works well with the mpc one. Class compliant usb for all 5 tracks. Xm is definitely not intuitive. But I'm getting through the menu diving. Still have a jdxi hooked up in the config as well. I look at the xm as a jdxi on steroids. Minus the groove box aspect.
The XM will really be my "Best Of Roland" machine. That will be mostly for Presets . You have several actual models included. The only thing I really wish they'd do a Zencore model of that they haven't is the D50, but you still have some of those sounds in the XV5080 anyway. The SH-4d will more for programming
Does this pattern sync like the Aira Compacts? Like when you change patterns on the master, it changes patterns on the slaves. I recently got the Sh-4d, I'm really happy with it and might get a second one. Would be great if it synced.
Will there be a keyboard version?
Dang the chord mode looks wilin, so customizable.
how many notes can you put on 1 step in the sequencer?
is there a way to solo and record the rhythm parts elements individually?
Does it save different presets per pattern/sequence?
Wow! That's so cool! Sounds great! 9:38
Wonder when this will be available, Thomann has it on "available in many months" since the first reviews came out. Not sure if any have been delivered at all other than to youtube reviewers.
bonne video explicative
Nice but can we get a Roland MV9000 Sampling Drum Machine
Is it really possible to output up to 12 audio outs via USB as advertised? It is only sending a stereo audio signal through USB and the manual doesn't explain how to do it.
Is possible to insert midi data inside like in 707
Very Elektron Looking. Think it looks good if used for new sound creation rather than focusing as ever on 106 and 101 sounds.
I love how portable it is. Just look at an sh32 for comparison.
For God's sake, plz, a video tutorial about transferring via USB audio and midi in and out of the SH-4D with another synthesizers.Thx.
The tilt feature is fun, but it needs Bluetooth then to go with it
Is it compatible over usb with mx1?
The design looks so perfect. But the sounds, does it sound like Zenology or is it just me?
If it's not running Zenology then it's definitely the same architecture, they are milking that cow dry.
@@GTChris It's a completely new architecture. They talk about that in other videos. I'd wager the sounds are similar because they are using the same PCM, waveshapes, samples, etc.
Very cool design, the Juno-106 model sounds greatl!
Is it possible to save created presets and patterns on the PC?
Unfortunately, when using USB audio, I hear audio from both the DAW and the device itself. The sound is doubled. It is unclear how to leave only the sound that comes from USB (DAW). Without this setting, multitrack recording doesn't make much sense.
yes please...
only D-Beam feature is missing.
IS THERE A SOFTWARE FRONT END?
tilting for effects: “Roland has made a Zoom ARQ!”
Can we get scale and chords mode
But does it have song mode?
Sensei Mike,I forgot the name of the model...
dia ada auxilliary, bluetoooth, and ada satu lagi output.
3mm jack output....
how do we start with this thing
Does it have WC-1 capabilities
Why cant the jupiter x and xm have this built in?
Oh sure, wait till AFTER I got a J-6 to pair with my SH-01a...
Regardless certainly more interested in this than say Drumlogue but wonder how I'll like the SH-4d vs the Syntakt I picked up recently...
J 6 is cool in its own right. I love the chord direction they were headed with that and the mc707. I miss the chord designer and assigning to keys. Definitely seems a little more flexible than the Syntakt though.
@@Max10_B word up, one my favorite gear is my Omnichord 🎶 and yes perhaps however there is no sampler. which doesn't matter to me since i have a Circuit Rhythm i guess?
I absolutely love Analog synths!
This not analog. It's virtual analog. (Not that people actually care, though)
@@DoctorNemmo thanks. I wasn’t claiming this was :) I just made a comment that I love analog synths
@@musicxtn Oh, me too bro. Me too.
Looks and sounds fantastic. Would be nice to know the price, can't seem to find that anywhere. Cheers!
$6-700
£550
@@christianthompson1473 good to know the pound is still worth a little more than the dollar but still crazy to me since i when i lived there 20 years ago it was more like 2:1
JP8000 remake. Please!
Looks amazing! Also who is the guy in the video he’s hot 🔥
Yea he’s sweating a lot
This literally blows ALL the competition out of the water, the only thing that I think competes with this is the Teenage Engineering OP-1 Field. Thing has all the classic synths built in with room for expansion, and even more it has waveshaping capabilities which is huge!!! I'm guessing this must be at least $1.5K for the amount of power in this thing, not to mention its portable has a rhythm synth/sequencer and has USB C ,Midi and a keybed! It's the perfect contender for the New generation music producer.
€600 according to thomann
I think the only thing I'd really like to see is chaining patterns, or being able to build variations that you can trigger.
Price on this is good, but best knobby groove box in the game right now is the Deluge
@@JoeM1314 Ohh, I've heard of that one but that thing literally plays itself, I like intuitive instruments but I also like the idea of you being the one who actually composes your music with as little help from the machine as possible.
@@Mgm_Designs I actually like the Deluge because it has better compositional control than the average groove box - I'm a musician first synthesist/gearhead second. You write music into the machine either by punching into the grid via touch controls or playing it in quantized to a minimum of a 256th note. It doesn't really come with any pre built patterns or chord modes or anything which I honestly think is a missed opportunity, but at the same time it is much quicker to draw (or play) in your chords or melodies than most other groove boxes. Essentially if you know your shit the sky is the limit, if you like to use chord packs on Ableton your SOL. Key changes when you want them and no weird step limits or lock in to specific amount of beats per section. Way less voice and tone limits too than most of the competition, and 16 outbound midi channels with CC control which really should be a standard of the format. The thing does CV too which is also sadly rare.
A lot of people on UA-cam just use it for ambient but I have it set up as the 4th member/drummer/keyboard wiz/occasional solo instrument of a 3 piece synthpop band with my buddies. Thing controls a light show via midi to DMX that goes with our whole set. Love it like a close relative, would sooner part with my guitar.
Roland kick the game !! The power of Roland engines against both elektron and Te. for the same price of op1 field you get sh 4d ans the sp Mk2 (if you need sampling) also you keep a lot of money …they take the integration with daw seriously !! Good point !! ( Japan pragmatism ) Toyota kick ikea :D
All those fancy-named models sound alike to me. Narrow-dimensional if you want to call it this way. Citing some great original units from the glorious past. Milking the Zencore-CashCow as long as possible 😀
4 op fm is a missed opportunity... especially at $650.00.
I just think they could have at least added all the jdxi pcm samples for the price. Instead of the odd 50 they did include. Mostly pianos and organs seems like.
im intrested because it's battery powered.
At first I thought that this wasn't much different in capability from my Arturia MicroFreak. Then I heard those Juno sounds... oof. Sign me up.
A really amazing synthesizer packed with cool features, but the save system is beyond ridiculous. If I use the same tone or drum kit for several projects but with minor changes I have the choice to either save the sound with the small changes over and over again,or I have to write down on paper every knob setting for every project where I use the same tone or drum kit. Both solutions are just dumb. Hope this gets fixed soon.
probability for tone parts! roland! bring this to my mc707 !!
The SH32 reborn
The SH-32's younger, better-understood brother.
Bad ass
Batteries, MIDI = good! 🎚🤖🎚 8:30 Tilting the pinball could be interesting also...
Dearest Roland: Where are the demos of this being wiggled hard? 🧐
Alex Ball
@@MusicZeroOne Ahh thanks!! The algorithm utterly failed to push it, and I subscribe to him obvs 🤨
Wish it had a chord designer instead of chord model. Sequencing/automating chord changes has never been fun for me. Chord designer the mc707 really opened up my stuff to different progressions by being able to assign to keys and play around
Easy fix...LEARN CHORDS!!!
Please just reissue the Jupiter and Juno series based on the originals. Make them purely analog (DCO as well) following the circuitry of the originals.
