Code Vein and Remnant From The Ashes should have been on this list
Those are my favorite non fromsoft souls like games as well.
Remnant is such a great game. I can't wait for the second. I honestly loved the idea of a third person shooter/souls game and was so glad I gave remnant a try a few years ago.
I'm in total agreement on these two. They were what came to my mind when I saw the title. Well, them and Final Fantasy Stranger in Paradise
@@XArtemisBlackXFF Stranger In Paradise was a fun game, underrated but a good game. I could never play the dlc because the dlc is locked behind the highest difficulty there is, which makes the difficulty options non existent for people like me who either don't have the time or the ability to get pass it.
Remnant from the Ashes is a great game but Code Vein is hot garbage in my opinion.
It's kinda funny to me that younger gamers refer to every difficult, unforgiving game as a "souls-like", simply because almost every 8-16 bit game back in the 80's and 90's would be considered "souls-like" nowadays lol those games were BRUTAL....with zero save points in most cases
And think about the original Ninja Gaiden. Limited lives, no save points. You had to beat the game with what you had. Contra, Mario Bros...so many games were difficult in much different ways than now. Imagine if a souls game had one life and you had to start over from the beginning every time you died? Sure, you can do that as a baked in challenge, but you don't have to.
Yep they are using the term all wrong usually.
Soulslike isn't just about the difficulty, all soulslike games have similar gameplay loops that are all inspired by From Software in some way. Whether it's the combat, leveling system, world connectivity or how you need to learn enemy movement and attack patterns to git gud etc.
The difficulty aspect only comes from the methodical combat and the fact that the enemies more often than not play by the same rules as the player.
The 8 and 16 bit games people like to refer to were just hard to keep you coming back for more, 9 times out of 10 it was just unfair artificial bs or caused by hardware limitations. Especially if they originated in or from the arcade era before being portered to home consoles. The whole point was to keep taking your money whether though arcades, renting it multiple times or having to pay for the guide and cheat book companies used to sell after buying it and getting stuck. Soulslikes pride themselves on being as difficult as those but actually fair.
absolutely agree. I really doubt most young kids would have the grit to get through either the original Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden on original Xbox.
they think losing souls is hard? Try losing a memory card with your entire library of game saves on it. lol
literally just completing Metal gear Solid 4 requires watching an almost 45 minute, unskippable cutscene. lol

I know the sequel was hit or miss for quite a few folks, but the original Salt & Sanctury was just THE best 2D souls-like so far. Just dripping style.

What about Remnant of the Ashes? WHen it came out, it was frequently called "Dark Souls with guns".
Yea but the problem with putting it on the list is this list is souls like. Remnant is more of a “better than any from soft” game

Hollow Knight is one of my favorite games ever, and my sons have all picked it up.
The middle one (10 year old) has beaten EVERY boss in the game, and nearly all of their radiant forms in Godhome. I'm good, I mean, i beat the game and every stabdard boss, but he's already twice the gamer I ever was.
He's since gone on to beat every boss in Cuphead on expert, and he's working through Hades next.
It's CRAZY! I'm so proud.

Vigil is a great game, but honestly I think Salt was a bit to brutal to be fun. Not hard for the record, just doesn't explain itself very well nor does it give good indications of a difficulty curve. Felt very much like a game made for people that already know the game rather than just to play.
Salt and Sanctuary / Salt and Sacrifice are incredible. They are like 2D clones of dark souls. Foreboding atmosphere, amazing locations and NpC’s, inventory and upgrade system, even the “bonfire” like save locations and estus type healing is dark souls to a T!

Having Cup Head on this list is an insult to the Soulslike genre. It's not a Soulslike, and it's only here because moronic reviewers called it the "Dark Souls of 2d" since they were intellectually bankrupt when writing their reviews and could only copy and paste one another's assessment.
Where's the actual good stuff, like Remnant: From the Ashes, or Code Vein? Why include fricken Cup Head of all things over ACTUAL Soulslikes?!

Tunic: Difficult combat, dark setting (after the first area), healing items resetting when you rest. It is a bit more puzzle heavy.

I don't know, but even if they share a lot of mechanics, featuring 2D side scrollers feels like cheating. It's a whole different perspective, with wildly different controls.
Blasphemous, Dead Cells, and Hollow Knight are all wonderful games, for sure, but calling them souls-likes is a stretch. They are Metroidvanias. I would have used the slots to mention Remnant: From The Ashes, Asterigos: Curse of the Stars, SteelRising, or Code:Vein.

If you want to play a sequel to code vein then pick up the God Eater series. Code Vein actually takes place in the same world setting as God Eater but in a different country so they developed different ways to combat the evolving monsters.

There's some games that are basically directly inspire by Dark Souls, like Remnant & Code Vein, but instead of including those, you weirdly include Hollow Knight and Cuphead. Maybe if you squint you can call Hollow Knight Soulslike. But Cuphead is not even fucking remotely close.

I just played through both Steelrising and Thymesia, and they were both pretty excellent Souls-Like games IMO.

I feel Lords of the Fallen should have been here. Very underrated game imo.
Honestly in my opinion it's kinda mid, however it holds a special place for me because it was the game that woke my interest in souls Bourne and souls like games you should watch the video the iron pineapple made on lords of the fallen
Cuphead isn't a soulslike, it's a side scrolling platformer without stamina management, a dying world, a plot that's told to you indirectly, or even a single melee weapon. Difficulty does not a Dark Souls make.
My favorite non-souls souls-like is probably Nostalgaia. The tongue in cheek humor scratches an itch similar to the borderlands series, packed full of references, and a surprisingly good story

@r.lum.rgaming1667 so basically it's a modern game made to look and feel old. The story is that all of the modern graphics are being corrupted and reverted to 8-bit. You play as a stick figure, which actually really matters to the story.

'Some difficult games and a few soul-likes" There. I fixed your title. Not every tough game needs the obligatory 'Dark Souls' comparison.
I would also include Tails of iron in this list. That game gave me serious Dark Souls vibes, and they really nailed how to translate parry and Rolling mechanics in a 2D setting.
It should be on the list. I really wanted to like that game, but the absence of dodge i-frames for a 2d game with such limited combat space was a huge mistake on the devs' part. Otherwise, it was well-made. Too bad really.
Good of you to not include Monster Hunter on the list. Anyone who plays both will know that aside from both being third-person action combat, the two series are almost exact opposites in all ways.
Not to mention monster hunter games are older than the first dark souls games.
Immortal: Unchained, but not Remnant: From the Ashes? Ridiculous.
Remnant is a *far* better "Souls-inspired but with guns" game than Immortal. That's not just me saying that; it's the consensus opinion of both critics and player reviews.
In any case Remnant has a sequel coming this year that looks promising.
Next: 10 Monster Collection games that aren't Pokémon. Nexomon and especially the recently released Cassette Beasts are awesome.
Really don't think a metroidvania should be considered a souls-like. Code Vein should have been on this list and a lesser known title called Hellpoint.
Yay, Nioh 2 is here. That's the only souls-like I've played, aside from a touch of Code Vein.
Slight correction though. You're ability to transform into a yokai form comes from your Guardian Spirits, which are gained through plot and side missions.
Soul Cores are basically slotted into Guardian Spirits. Initially you can slot 2 cores into a spirit, but a plot will grant you a third slot.
Guardian Spirits and Soul Cores each provide increases to your stats, so they are vital in powering you up, and if you die, your guardian will protect the amrita (souls) you lost until you reach it, so until then, you won't be able to transform and your stats will be less (and if you die again, the guardian comes back to you).
Soul Cores allow you to summon the associated yokai for special abilities, some of these do show you transforming, but others show you summoning the yokai in question, one of my favorite is the snake ladies which will wrap around you and paralyze your enemies. You always have access to the "yokai" abilities provided by soul cores, even if the guardian spirit they're attuned to is guarding your grave.
At a certain point, you are also able to have both a primary and secondary guardian spirit, each with their own suite of 2-3 attuned soul cores and you're able to switch between the two, allowing you some flexible tactics.
*whisper* Nioh 2 blows Souls out of the water
Not having salt and sanctuary or salt and sacrifice, remnant from the ashes on this most should be criminal all of those are more soulslike then cupuead AND hollowknight!
Over half of the list isn't even souls-like games, while Code Vein and Remnant from the ashes were left out.

If you could find it within yourself to give Ashen a try…. You will fall in love with something that’s so dark souls to it’s core…. But ALSO a few select things that it (Ashen) does better 😊

I wonder what happened to Mortal Shell developers. That game blew up and while it didn't look fun to me, it looked like it had a lot of good work put into it

After the patches and tweaks. I became a huge fan of Hellpoint. Indie, janky, made by only dozen people but a lot of replay value and appeal.

@dontrailtyson8405 Really? When was the last time you played it? I played it on the potato Ps4 last year lol. The only real bug I had was the corrupt save file bug. That was easily solved by just manually backing it up on the ps4 cloud every now and then

It is a travesty, that you would include Ashen and Immortal: Unchained (few of the worst soulslikes) and not include Remnant: From the Ashes and Code Vein (few of the best soulslikes). Not to mention; Cuphead, Blasphemous and Hollow Knight are not really a soulslikes.
The Surge 2. Very happy it hit the list; it’s an amazing game
I liked the story in it too. It didn’t have the absurd level of complexity of dark souls or Bloodborne, but it had its charm. Nanomachines have rebelled against the human race and running rampant. Almost everyone that has nanites in them is now a slave to the swarm. Your goal as a survivor is to find the truth of why all this is happening, why the machines turned, and stop the swarm

Mortal shell needs a dark souls crossover dlc where one boss from darks souls is a shell and has it own skill tree and we can explore a mortal shell style of dark souls 1 world or a story dlc with new weapons and shells

Mortal Shell is such a great game! And it runs very well for how great it looks.
i tried it out and tried to get into it but personally i couldn’t get into it, too clunky and i didn’t like the way everything was designed
i would've put Blasphemous at number 1 instead of Hollow Knight on my list. i enjoyed it more than Hollow Knight because the artwork, story and themes are more to my liking/interests than that of Hollow Knight's. both are great games that offer their own unique experiences even though they're heavily inspired by other games that came before them

my favorite souls like game is Code Vein with its anime style and story and lore for every character I love the game so much and I normally don't care for souls like games but I have beat it multiple times and still want a sequel and or an anime for it......Code Vein NEEDS more love from those who love both anime and souls like games

Seeing Immortal: Unchained getting love is def a kink of mine. I had way more fun with that game then i thought i would and am going to play it on my souls-only twitch channel later this year. CHEERS!

Cuphead is absolutely not a Souls game, difficulty and death screen are the only common ground, none of the hallmarks of the genre.
Dead Cells is straight rogue lite.
Have those but are missing Remnant: From the Ashes, Code Vein, Salt and Sanctuary, Steel Rising, and any number of actual Soulslike game that could have made it.

Dead Cells is not even close to a Souls-like. It's procedurally generated, you can't pickup your souls when you die and it has no stamina meter. Just because a game is difficult and includes a roll button doesn't mean it's like Dark Souls.
Maybe, you know, play the games you talk about in your video or do better research so you don't sound like an ignoramus.
There are multiple gameplay mechanics associated with a souls-like, not just recovering your experience after you die
There are several gesture on here that rent souls-like. Cuphead? Really?
@Jacob Wolff you could say every game is a souls-like with that logic though. Large interconnected worlds? Souls-like. Increase stats? Souls-like. Hard? Souls-like. Losing your experience and having to fight your way back to it is the main mechanic that set them apart from other games. That, it's healing mechanic, and the way it tells a story.
I love Dead Cells, but her argument for soulslike was kinda weak. I'd go Code Vein and Remnant.
Got excited when i saw ender lillies quietus of the knight in the beginning of the vid even though its closer to hollow knight then dark souls outside of the aethstetics and bosses i cannot recommend ender lillies more if you love hollow knight cause it is an amazing game. Knew blasphemous would make the list and im excited to play the sequel.
Absolutely. Ender Lilies is incredibly under rated. Salt and Sanctuary is another that's in the same vein.
The funniest thing about these Souls-like lists is that you think you should check them out only to realize you already have all of them in your Steam library.

Happy to see hollow knight in this list. Upon attaining the platinum trophy in hollow knight, it made me think that I could take on dark souls or any like it, but no, the dark souls genre is still a different kind of beast.
I love all the Souls games and Sekiro to bits and pretty much will buy every FromSoftware game without question that being said can we stop calling everything a Souls-like please? Just because a game a difficult and has some dodging mechanics does not make it a souls like...SMH! Seems only former WhatCulture member Rach is the only one that knows what a Souls-like is.

Remnant From The Ashes: NOT a looter. more like a souls like diablo with guns. dungeon crawler with roguelike elements, built around third person shooting.
Steel Rising: Bloodborne but instead of a Hoonter you're a battle android during the French Revolution reporting to real historical figures. Sick
Thymesia: double A bloodborne with a lil bit of sekiro poise. it does it's own thing with the weapon usage.
Asterigos Curse Of The Stars: I have not finished yet, but it's basically a redhead greek girl fighting gods. very good dual weapon system too. on the easier side.
Darksiders 3: more character action than soulslike, but it counts

Deaths gambit is critically underrated, the soundtrack is one of the best I’ve ever heard out of all of gaming,
But mortal shell that high? Idk man it was promising, but missed the mark for me
