Okay, you KNOW it's beyond obscure when even Christian Whitehead missed it.

He also missed the 5th ledge animation in the game. Or at least I SWEAR there was a 5th one that I have encountered.
@@ExtremeWreck wha
@@miwiki6 Yeah. I made a comment on this video describing this 5th ledge animation that I have encountered.

He’s in the corner of a party like “they don’t know I added one extra frame of animation to Sonic’s ledge animation”
Cybershell is capable of talking about a single pixel in the background of a level for a half hour and I'd be captivated.
i was sad when i realized that the vid wasnt 30 minutes long
Like the out of place pixel on the W in the super Mario world logo
@@loygeesepicotheraccount2958 dear god why did you remind me of that.
@@gamingnubs7628 I can't get it out of my head

You know what, I was just going about my day thinking, "Wow, I sure do know about every single sprite from Sonic's ledge animations in Sonic 2." Then here you come in, blowing my mind as usual. I don't know how I managed to go my whole life without knowing this.
Didn't know sonic ledge animations were that popular
Well, I think I have known about a 5th one that I explained in my own comment. I swear I saw that 5th one more than 10 times throughout the years, & it looked similar to the 1 ledge animation in Sonic 1. Maybe that's me having the Mandela effect, maybe Atgames used a bizarro version, or perhaps it only exists in certain copies of the game. Who the heck knows?
@@ExtremeWreck who the heck knows that you’re going on about.
@@Robert-tl2vg Well, you're right on that. I don't think even Cybershell knows of this 5th ledge animation that I have encountered. I might play it again, & if I find that very 5th ledge animation, I'll do a freakin' video showcasing it in action.

You just gotta enjoy the small, very specific and pointless stuff in life sometimes, you know.
Bro you may be popular and have awesome vids (i watched one) but dont be such a jerk and i know everyone has there own opinion but to OTHERS its satisfying that's why we just gotta' respect that.
just like math in school
Cybershell, you didn't even mention the 5th ledge sprite, the one that plays when you are Super Sonic
I can't believe the Sonic lore master forgot about that
That's the coolest ledge animation ever. You just know Sonic is really in control
Didn't bring up how Tails uses the Sonic 1 teeter systrm either smh
And the secret 6th animation when he is facing backwards (ok maybe that’s only in mania but whatever)
@@iloveadrian715 but that one's unused i think
This sprite would be better if it actually lasted more than a frame since it does make the balancing animation look quite fluid
It probably only lasts a frame because it disrupted gameplay flow or something.
@@skunthundler or maybe because of the limitations of the game they weren't able to make it look super fluid just like the cut animations from 2 where the Sonic sprites look way more fluid in beta
@@skunthundler I think it's just due to a value that the devs entered in the animation code was too short by accident and due to it being so short they did not noticed this frame exist and was changing to quickly, this happened in a lot of other games.

Shut up LsMark! Why can’t you be educated and well mannered like Splash Dash?
Aren’t you supposed to be watching family guy
the fact that this sprite wasn't included in the Sonic 2 Bonus Video downgrades it from Cinematic Masterpiece to Unwatchable
The bonus vids are only about CUT CONTENT, this sprite is litterally in the final game.
@@gamingicedragon336 Actually, no. In some sections or at the end there are little trivia sections that go over some obscure things.
I get the impression the sprite was made specifically for when sonic is pushed off with a moving block rather than for general ledges. It feels more fitting in that scenario and if it was programed for that then the regular method would be a side effect.
Yeah finally watching this it seems clear it's meant specifically to transition between the facing away animation and the direction-independent far edge balance animation which is going to happen when getting pushed (because when controlling sonic the walking animation interrupts it).
I think so too because Sonic turns to face what's pushing him.
Cybershell is going to make a video one day on how one tiny, miniscule pixel in Sonic 3 is slightly off color for a fraction of a second during a specific sequence and I would love it.
Very true though, several parts of Sonic's sprites are obviously modified from sonic 2's sprites instead
Like how when you get the red Super Emerald and watch the little animation of it lighting up, it appears dark purple. Then every other time you see it, it's red. Unless another emerald is being lit up, then it's purple again.
you could make an entire video on sonic 3s miniscule visual mistakes, like how part of sonics stomach is visible in knuckles running animation
@@davebob4973 Wait, you want me to do it?

After discovering edge animation in original sonic the hedgehog back when I was a kid I began to check every single 2d side scroller to see if they included similar animation, as if it's some kind of a gold standard.

Now that I think about it, I don't think _any_ 2d Mario games have an edge animation (unless you count dropping off the edge to hang by your hands, which i don't because it's a physically different mechanic)
Honestly, Cybershell gives off a unique vibe with his videos and it makes his videos really rewatch-able and enjoyable. Keep being you, my dude!
I think it's because he's self-aware but not self-deprecating, like he knows this stuff is a really niche interest and makes humour out of that but still goes unapologetically all-in

Always wondered why no one talks about this sprite myself, and of course it's Cybershell of all people to finally bring it up.
I know.. you rarely hear people talk about this, even on public transportation where there's ample time to do so. Now, yes, now and again you will hear the odd person discuss it with someone during a lunch break at work or while using a public urinal, but it's rare enough that I still react to hearing it. That's really sad, but I guess it's a sign of the times we live in.
I once read about it in the Evening Standard.
It claimed that this single sprite changed the trading of currency forever.
I told my friends and they agreed that It was underrated
This comment out of context is so funny to me. Imagine saying "nobody is talking about this in-between sprite, what gives?" if it wasn't about Sonic.
"iconic impatient foot tap" sounds like something Zach Hadel would say.

It reminds me how back then I found those balancing animations as a part of the games' quality, as if it's affecting the imaginary ranks I gave them. Cybershell: u n p l a y a b l e
I'm not gonna pretend like I knew about this already. This legit blew my mind, I didn't think there was much more obscure than the pigs never being able to appear in Sonic 2 but there we have it.
Hey Cyber, there's a situation just like this in Sonic 3 too!
When you swing on Mushroom Hill Zone's sideways-spinning bars, there is, for a split second, a frame where Sonic grabs on to the bar with only one hand.
@chilliorganism i just checked. it's true!! why is nobody talking about this? why is the truth being suppressed
This will have a unbelieveable impact on minimum button presses runs, and what version is 'optimal' for it.
Wait three months for a five minute video about a sprite that only lasts for 1 frame
This is why I'm subscribed
It’s amazing to know how much of Sonic 2 is out there. Like the weird casino night monitor, and the leftover level data.
More platformers need ledge animations.
Dose this mean the mobile sonic is a different sonic?
DOSE THIS MEAN THE MOBILE GAMES ARE A DIFFERENT UNIVERSE ENTIRELY?
This frame isn’t in the Sonic 2 remake? LITERALLY UNPLAYABLE!
I feel smarter every day. Thank you Cybershell!
It sounds like Cybershell is giving a tutorial on how to preform a super specific glitch in the game, but this is far better
I love how your channel is basically just little fun facts about sonic, I like that a lot.
see you in like 8 more years
at least he is still posting in his second channel
There’s another 1 frame sprite triggered when moving again after sonic lies down in his idle animation
Holy crap, so there's another person that has seen the 5th ledge animation!?
I found out about the sprite 3 years ago on casino night zone with the moving blue blocks , I had to record it on my phone to see if wasnt tripping out and I wasn't. After watching this video I felt like an absolute god for knowing something that no one will care about but that didn't stop me from feeling like a king.
I've played through Sonic 2 a million times and I've never noticed the 'balancing while facing away from a ledge' sprite. Need to hand in my Sonic card.
Actually theres another feature thats missing from the Christian Whitehead Sonic 2 port, during the chemical plant zone boss as sonic, you should be able to duck and be completely immune to robotnik's chemical spill attack, however, in this version the attack still harms you regardless.
You've got something special mate. Seriously. A feckin sprite! I still remember getting Sonic 2 a few weeks after it came out. Was just out of this world. And I was similarly blown away by Sonic 3 and Knuckles. All the amazing work done by people digging through the betas and all has given me so many hours of nostalgic joy.
As you have. You really research your topics, you are funny, engaging and interesting and you bring loads of great content and with them a slew of wonderful nostalgia. Keep kicking ass mate 👍
This blows my mind, I didn’t even know this, thanks for diving deep into this unknown frame of animation Cybershell.
I think it’s safe to say the best ledge animation is super sonic because he doesn’t even care, he just hangs there like a badass, and they didn’t have to do that yet they did
I was binging all your videos before you posted this one, great now i have to watch them again
I've seen this sprite before on the old Sonic 2 Sonic sheet on TSR (the one you cited) and for the longest time I had no idea where it was used. I also never knew there even was a back-facing balancing sprite for the longest time. It's great to see someone going through and shining a spotlight on these odd little details.
Always excited for your videos man, happy to hear from you!
It's really unique how they made multiple animations for ledges-- it shows the amount of effort they put into it. Awesome touch everywhere.
The world absolutely will not be the same without you. Good shit as usual, Cybershell

I don't think I ever knew about this! Cybershell truly is the Sonic lore master.
2:19 this is what you clicked for
It’s always a good day when Cybershell posts a new video
One thing that graduates the 2013 version from UNPLAYABLE to SUPER UNPLAYABLE. If you duck as Sonic in the CPZ boss the chemicals he drops will break on your spines and you don't take damage. They either forgot or didn't know for the 2013 version so it doesn't work.
Thanks for making this video, because now it's on the sheet on the spriter's resource!
I was just thinking “it’s been a minute since Cybershell uploaded” and here we are!

6 months... he died again?
This is great😂 even in the hundreds of hours I played this game as a child and my teens, I've NEVER noticed this
It takes a very special kind of youtuber to get me interested in the most niche and obscure subject matter. And cybershell is one of them.
Another obscure fact: There's a Perfect bonus score for collecting ALL rings in the levels and the Special Stages, it's that it's just very difficult to perform due to the rings having scattered loose patterns on the Special Stages, and I don't think players have patience to collect all rings on the levels lmao.
It's explained in another Cybershell video, but I bring this up just in case.
I actually remember another sprite like this one that more closely resembled the one from Sonic 1, & I saw it more than 10 times throughout the years of playing Sonic 2. I just saw it as a way to tell me that I'm too close to a ledge, & I might die if I go a little further. Heck, I think one time I actually saw it happen for like, 10 seconds, or so. Yeah, sometimes that 5th animation won't be a 1-frame transition, but its own animation that just stays as that with about like, 2 frames, with 1 frame per 1 second. I'm probably the only one who's had that happen before, & it might be a glitch that is one of the hardest to get in ANY video game ever.
Or maybe the version included in the Atgames consoles is somewhat bizarre in that sense. Or perhaps the Mandela effect. Or maybe it's only in earlier copies that Atgames got ahold of. Who the heck even knows?
EDIT: Corrected it realizing that the sprite he's talking about isn't the same one that I encountered multiple times while playing Sonic 2.
never seen it but mandela effects arent that good
If Cybershell is a history teacher, I bet no one will feel tired.
The more times I watch Cybershell videos talking about some obscure frame or animation, the more I want to see even more of them. Also idk what it is about your voice but you really can make anything interesting. :)
Brother just gaslit all of us for not being able to perceive a frame.😂
so fun story I tried to get it perfect so I paused it to slow it down, and I paused on that frame
It's at 2:03 btw
It's a bit hard to get but if you slow it down you can see it for a second
This is definitely new to me, and it reads like an in between with such short timing it might as well not exist
It would look just fine if it lasted at least 3 frames longer. But regardless, does not go unappreciated
I’m a sucker for tiny details, especially in character animation. Thanks for scratching that itch
Thank you for acknowledging it because like I was actually also questioning about what was this supposed to be used I also thought it was supposed to be like early animation of Sonic almost falling off the edge
