@@dragobane4728, theoretically yeah. haha, I only just found out about the continued burn effect. Our DM is pretty loose with giving us items since he feels the items are designed to be available in the game. I think this reminded him some portion control is important.
I still think he handled it brilliantly though. he gave us a story where we felt like champions, and he removed all of the alchemist fire he gave us that we probably shouldn't have had in the first place. most importantly he let us make that choice ourselves.

Somewhat similar to how my party completed this encounter, except it was done primarily with our assassin rogue getting his sneaky crit, the fighter getting two crits with an action surge, and a well used lightning bolt scroll

This reminds me of another dragon encounter that the party had no business surviving. Someone climbed a wall and ceiling with Spider Climb, carrying a Reduced anvil I believe. They got as high as they could, directly above the dragon, and then dropped the Reduce and I think Enlarged it, as they dropped the anvil. With the insane extra weight and the distance it fell, it managed to oneshot the dragon.

Reminds of a D20 live campaign that a group creators from Channel Awesome did at ConBravo. The Black Dragon was intended by the DM to be taken down with the help of an NPC army, but he made a few mistakes leading to the players killing it on their own. Spoony decided to taunt the dragon to get it land fight the party which did when it had reason, it was then shot with cannons, missed the breath attack, had its wings fried with lightning bolt spells, then the dragon collapsed because it tried and failed to attack by swiping both of its front legs, then Spoony stabbed it in the spine which was a crit, Linkara shot it in the spine with an arrow, and then a wizard used Spoony's sword which still logged in the Dragon's spine as a lightning rod. Also worth noting that the party was only four players and one was incapacitated because they drank poison and yet the dragon couldn't hit damage them at all.

This brings back the memory of my first 5e campaign and how we handled this very encounter (lost mines of phendelver if you didn't know) I was playing in a group of players new to D&D with the exception of myself and the DM. I was playing a dwarven life domain cleric, a reimagining of the very first D&D character I ever played. It wasn't my first choice but due to miscommunication with my DM I ended playing this cleric and making for a poetic start to my 5e adventures.
The rest of the group consisted of a Kenku rogue scout, a changeling bard of valor, and a gnome wild sorcerer.
I do not remember details of the fights and such but I do remember the general way things went. We found ourselves fighting ash zombies and twig blights systematically clearing threats in the area and I couldn't help but notice our DMs excitement for what was to come.
We got to the tower and we took notice of some dead spiders near by and while my character thought nothing of it really as a player I saw the signs of what was and I let slip my realization with a sort of "oh no" or the like. Not wanting to meta game I didn't say anything about the dragon I knew we were about to face.
In character we were talking about if we should enter this house and tower or not after opening the door. This is when the DM cut in and described that we had encountered the dragon. The description of the dragons eyes were enough to make my heart skip a beat as my fears were realized. We found ourselves suddenly in negotiations of how best to get out of this alive. Out of character the players noticed my distress and were saying it was fine and we could handle it. Internally I am screaming "we're going to die".
Negotiations did not go well as this dragon was stronger then us, I knew it, the DM knew it and so the dragon knew it. It wanted all our magic items while initially I was trying to convince our sorcerer to part with his staff in hopes of leaving peacefully but understandably our sorcerer wasn't about to give his staff and focus up for anything. The dragon grew impatient with our argument and initiative was rolled, the fight was on.
The DM was delighted with himself during this encounter while I was sweating bullets fearing our new players would be subjected to a tpk so early in the game.
While I want to say my experience as a player saved us I cannot take credit for this fight going the way it did and to this day I don't know how we did it but we survived the fight if only barely.
Our sorcerer took partial cover the whole fight casting spell from a safe distance. Our rogue flanked the dragon for the backstab her blade sadly bouncing off all too often again the dragons AC. Our bard mostly stood back offering inspiration and mild support while I took the dragon head on.
Having played many cleric and loving the class I knew the one rule every good cleric knows, "Tank cleric is best cleric" and this saved my hide in this fight.
I was built very tank like with chainmail armor, a shield and my beautiful enchanted Warhammer but I still took hard hits. The dragon of course was not dumb and attacked our rogue a few times, actually dropping them to 0 hit points at least twice. Thanks to my healing word and high wisdom I managed to heal the rogue and avoid our first player death.
Our bard also nearly went down when the dragon breathed is poison on us but for me being a dwarf that sweet poison resistance and high constitution saved me easy.
In the end our group managed to pump out more then half the dragons health worth of damage and the DM described how the dragon was starting to look concerned by the way the fight was going and in that moment I took action in hopes of saving our group from death. I told the dragon that still had enough magic to keep my allies alive and that if it wanted to live to see tomorrow I would stand aside and let it leave with it's life. The dragon agreed and I stepped aside watching the dragon leave.
There was much joy between the group members and I was basically melting in my seat with relief. We had won some how and we reveled in it.
While still don't know for sure how we won this fight I don't think about it too much I simply enjoy the great memory I made with those friends and their first great triumph as new players.

I got clever and managed to bypass an entire trap and section of the dungeon by using shape water. Skipping an entire boss fight. The GM wasn't prepared for what I did. We had to get the key out of an ignition slot every time we reached for it the key would set off a trap and slide back into place. I used shape water to force water into the lock mechanism. The gm was looking through his notes to see if he wrote anything for what I was trying to do. I created enough water pressure to make it act as a faucet in order to flush the key out without setting off the trap. So I took the key and used it to unlock the elevator and bypass the entire first floor of the dungeon. We were supposed to explore the dungeon and do a boss fight in order to shut off the mechanism.

Our Druid convinced a Black Dragon to help him find his birth parents. We head off to the enclave where they are supposed to live either next session or the session after that. A strange coincidence then came about that the person who stole our C.A.R.T.I.S. was seen heading in that direction. Unfortunately without the C.A.R.T.I.S. the trip will take several days time, so we are at a huge disadvantage. Some of us even think the dragon lied to us and may possibly have set a trap.

The event that got me to love TTRPGs was, surprisingly, the session one of my favorite characters I've played as died in combat.
I, Tobïn Duthane, a hopeful young Dwarf and a budding blacksmith, received a job offer from one King Alfie, who offered great payment to the adventurers who could find and kill his evil siblings, to stop an encroaching plague which turned normal people into evil husks which was sweeping his lands. I accepted, hoping to use my cut of the reward to open my own shop, and to acquire inspiration for a great creation of my own while out on my travels. Accompanying me was a Human Monk whose name escapes me, and a Warforged Fighter named Gridlock.
We had found Alfie's sister, a witch of ice and snow, high up in the mountains, and had just completed rescuing Alfie's missing son, and interrogating her for information regarding the whereabouts of the king's brother, the true mastermind behind the plague, when she managed to escape her bindings and teleport to safety. Following this, she sicked her minions, a nest of Frost Spiders, onto us to stop us from leaving alive. One of them took the king's son into the cellar below.
Gridlock was not present for this session, so it was just I and the Monk, left to combat these fiends on our own. Due to a series of unfortunate events prior to this mission, I was stuck at 1 HP, out of death saves due to 1v1ing a Dire Beaver the DM threw at me during the previous session, so combat was something I wanted to steer clear of now, especially considering we were two Level 1 characters fighting three adult Frost Spiders.
We ducked into the cellar, where I found a small hole in the wall one of the spiders had taken the child through. Between the two of us, only I could fit through the hole. So, now the level 1 party was split while fighting Frost Spiders. Hooray.
I tracked the child through the caves for a time, until I came to the Spider's nest, where the queen was preparing to descend upon several people who had been taken by these arachnids. I took this time to down some rations and recover almost all of my hit points, creating a plan to rescue these people and hopefully get out alive myself.
I used my ingenuity as a blacksmith to rig a torch to the end of one of my javelins using a bit of rope, lit it, and chucked it into the nearby egg nest to distract the Queen. She took the bait, watching her children incinerate, and I quickly rushed over to try and rescue the child and the four other people who were trapped. _Too_ quickly. I failed my stealth roll, and the Queen turned around to face me.
Meanwhile, the Monk was hiding from the spiders, trying to avoid combat as well. He also failed stealth though, so one of the Spiders came through the opening in the ceiling to fight the Monk in the cellar. Not good.
I, meanwhile, was running around in the cavern for my life. The Queen fumbled an athletics roll while coming after me, and caught herself on fire while trying to chase me down. Thinking quickly, I ducked under her, causing her to run into a rather large chunk of webbing that was connected to the greater part of the nest, catching all of her minions on fire as well.
The dice smiled on us this day, my friends, and shunned the DM, because for every roll under 5 he got, we would get one above 15 in turn. The Monk managed to solo one of the Spiders in combat while I cut down everyone with a NAT 20 atheletics roll. The entire nest was collapsing around us, and I led everyone to safety through the dark of the cave system by getting them to follow the sound of my voice.
When we reached the mouth of the cave, I tried to lead everyone back up to the safety of the Witch's cabin. During my whole ordeal, I had forgotten about the other two Spiders, and, being alone and in the open, breathed my last trying to defend the people I had worked so hard to rescue.
When the monk came outside, he found the Spiders had retreated, leaving a trail of corpses in the snow, the nearby head of Tobïn Duthane laying in a fresh pool of his own blood amongst the corpses of everyone he had tried, in vain, to rescue (the king's son included.)
    Was it unfortunate? Yes.
Were the circumstances stacked against us? Yes.
Should a NAT 1 on an investigation roll have gotten the town to rise up against me, beat me half to death, and cause me to run out into the woods and hide for the night, where a Dire Beaver slept nearby, causing me to fight it as a level 1 barbarian with only half of my hit points, fail all of my death saves, and get rescued at the last second by the DMPC Barrak Erberma? *No.*
This is one of my favorite memories, though, because in the midst of overwhelming odds, I acted as my character would, used a backstory-relevant skill, and single-handedly destroyed a Frost Spider nest. Apart from me dying and having my sacrifice basically be for naught, I had more fun then than I had had for a long time playing DnD with that particular group.
_R.I.P. Mr. Duthane, the Slayer of Spiders, the Master of Crafting. Gone too soon._

They went in for a surprise round against the green dragon and all but one crit on their rolls. It dropped to under half its health and then they all saved against its breath. The book speaks of it flying off once it is at half health, they just shot it down before it even left their long range. 3 round massacre. The dragon cultists nearby just stared in awe.

First of As a lv 3 sorcerer with +0 strength I managed to grapple a vampire spawn for 4 rounds straight while the rest of the party was beating him up, he escaped the 5th round and attacked me but missed, I was next in line and rolled another nat 20 on grapple. 2 rounds latter it was dead.
The second thing that happened was me rolling a critt on a luck roll to see if I would shoot in the right direction to hit the assassin (CR8) that was attacking us and sneaking around. The DM said I still needed to roll to hit. It was another critt, rolling Max damage on the fire bolt I shot I dealt 20 damage. Now knowing were he was we lite him the f*ck up.
Next in line was a group of 20 goblins. (This happened a little later but still in the same session.) To keep it short: I killed all of them in a single round using burning hands.
Not so fortuned was my party persuading my lawful good character in blowing up a building, killing 52 innocent people. And than just telling my character they were innocent. People at secretly paying for that now... The party doesn't know it jet. The DM loves it.

    • @probablythedm1669
      @probablythedm1669 4 роки тому +2

I mean, there really is no such thing in 5e. There's just the state of being surprised.
So stealth checks for anyone trying to sneak up on the dragon vs dragon's passive perception (so DC 17). If all who are trying to surprise it pass the check the dragon is surprised and can't take any actions or reactions on its first combat turn. Then you roll initiative like normal, but the dragon does nothing on its turn during the first round of combat.
DM's mess this simple rule up so often I think most just don't even know that's how surprise works in 5e, so they just let the party all succeed without checking if the monsters notice them. Hence the "surprise round", which really is not a thing in 5e.
So TL;DR, for them all to surprise the dragon they should all have made a DC 17 Stealth Check. Roll initiative. Those who passed got to take a turn before the dragon, those who failed would just have sat out the first round. If all fail, no surprise. Then combat as usual.

Yes to make things easier a lot of DM allow a surprise round. As much as you may not like it a creature surprised gets a turn but can't do anything. So if they party surprised the dragon letting them all take a turn before initiative is effectively the same outcome.
Also dragon doesn't wake up from outside noise only of you make too much noise in the cottage is how the module states.
Plus there is the rule of fun. This isn't outside of the realm of possible and made a better story than Tpk

I have, in fact, done something like this! I don't remember the name of the story we were playing now, some kind of underground adventure I think? Our party was a Goliath barbarian, an Elf druid, a Human fighter, an Elf warlock, and my Dragonborn rogue. We'd stumbled onto a tribe of kobolds that I convinced the rest of the party not to kill, since they practically workshipped me and I could leverage that regard for all kinds of goodness (and boy did I, I even wound up with a kobold vassal who left his Queen to follow me!) - They asked us for help and promised a huge reward to...Well, me and my "servants" (boy did the warlock hate being some two-bit rogue's thug!) if we did them the immense favor of returning their deity. Which was a young white dragon that had broken loose from its room and then been kidnapped by goblins somehow. We even went into that fight with the thing awake, already angry because goblins kidnapped it, *and* we'd all been hurt by some smoke monster from an abandoned alchemy lab and a goblin ambush. I don't remember specific rolls or damage numbers, but we had a pretty hard fight that ended with the barb getting a nat 20 on a specifically-stated non-lethal attack that clubbed the sucker out cold. We survived, got a ton of experience for NOT killing the dragon and returning it, I got a vassal, we all got treasure, and we got this special key to a door we had discovered before the kobold tribe that we could not open. Was great!

Some months ago, a group my brother runs made an ambush for an ancient white dragon. With the support of an airship and a VERY hard hitting paladin smite critical, the dragon started to run off after only a few rounds. The groups sorceress, barbarian/fighter, and fighter/warlock (me) decided to teleport onto the dragon to finish it off since it was at death's door. We somehow managed to get onto the dragon and I ended up delivering the death blow (Lowest in initiative). Then we realized we were on a dead dragon very high up in the air. The sorceress flew the barbarian off while I went down with the dragon, intending of misty stepping off of it when it got low enough. I think I rolled a 2 or 3 on my dexterity save that my brother said was me timing my jump. Needless to say I hit quite a few trees during my terminal velocity misty step and ended off with only a few health points left. One of my favourite sessions I've ever had in 5e.

Lost Mines of Phandalver campaign -
All level 3 (5 of us) - human dragon-bloodline sorcerer (me), halfling paladin of Vengeance (who always yelled something related to the Sun (also, our normal DM, but he had been dealing with a bit of creativity block)), human warrior, dwarf barbarian, wood elf thief.
Now, we knew that there was a green dragon in the area, and we'd hashed out a plan, where in I'd use a fireball scroll I'd gotten as loot early on in the campaign, and then we'd do whatever we wanted to do. Well, initiative had me go 4th - Halfling Paladin, Dragon, Wood Elf thief, then me, then the others. Well, that halfling paladin always had to rush in (probably saved him actually), yelling "In the Name of the Sun!", and that dragon used its breath attack upon those of us that were still crowded together - 23 points of damage each (good thing we'd made our con saves and, more importantly, I had Inspiring Leadership, which gave everyone 8 extra hit points - kept me alive) When my turn came around, I hurled that fireball at it, and did a little over 30 points of damage. We then went at it with everything we had. The fighter and barbarian (both already weakened due to breath attack) soon went down, but our halfling paladin had a lot of heart, and was determined to slay it, while me and the wood elf provided support. After a while, the halfling Paladin used a powerful Smite, and beheaded that dragon. Slight issue, the body fell on him. Luckily, me and the wood elf had healing potions, and we helped out our two knocked-out allies, who removed the body from our Paladin, who was like "Praise the Sun!"

I ran The Sunless Citadel a few years back and my party ultimately sided with the Kobolds in the dungeon. After the boss fight, they ignored the goblin tribe’s pleas for leniency and bottlenecked them in a room. They then brought in all the barrels of oil and alcohol as well as some Alchemist Fire that were littered throughout the citadel and used the dragonborn’s fire to blow them up, nuking a vast majority of the goblins in one attack. They then picked off the last of the ones being burned alive and those brave (or stupid?) enough to try and still fight. They then brought several of them back to the Kobolds to use as fodder for the Gulthias Tree under the promise that they help the citizens of Oakhurst more than the goblins did (and slide them some of the profits of course). It was a wild session.

Reminds me of a moment in one of my pathfinder 2e games. Me (a rogue), an alchemist, and a fighter (we were level 3 I think), were going through a witch's dungeon built in to the side of a mountain to stop her from unleashing a plague upon the nearby towns. A good bit in to it, the party hears a woman crying coming from a door to the left. I decide I would stealth my way in. In the room was 3 steel barred cells with all the doors open on the left, and a balcony about 35 feet upwards on the right. In the furthest cell, there was a figure in the corner of the room, curled up on the floor, crying, wearing a cloak, and appeared to be humanoid. I didnt trust it for a second, and attempted to sneak up to the cell door, close it, and lock it. Natural 1 on my sneak, and I trip, then sneeze. Then the cloaked figure turned around, took off its veil, and it was a 15 foot tall flesh monster (dont remember the exact name) thats entire body was covered with varying limbs from races and faces contorting on its flesh. I slammed the person size door, and ran out of there. It just about effortlessly nocked down the whole barred wall, and chased after me. I got our fighter to block the door, but he was just barely passing the checks. I ran up a set of stairs to find an alchemy lab, with the balcony on the left side of the room. I ran to pick up damaging type potions. My check was high enough that I could tell beneficial from damage potions, but I couldnt identify what they were. With a sack full of 14 potions, I ran to the balcony, where the creature was still beating on the exit door, and hurled the bag at the monstrosity. Nat 20, with just about max damage for each pot. The entire creature blew up in an explosion of ice, fire, and lightning, and blood. The door that the fighter was blocking blew up in to splinters, launching the fighter 15 feet back, and nearly killing him. That was one of my favorite kills. And funny part is, we didnt have a healer, and were taking loads of damage throughout the whole dungeon, and we ended up squatting in the for 2 weeks for healing. By the time we got to the witch, she was surprised to see we were still here, as She had already wiped out all the nearby towns Days prior.

I was the DM of a group of 4. Paladin, Sorcerer, Bloodhunter, and Druid. The only player who knew what he was doing was the paladin, but the Bloodhunter had a quiver that could give her any kind of arrows she wanted. They entered a 40 man battle royal with mostly sentient undead. I decided to throw a curve ball and make one of them a lich, and gave the lich the strategy of heading straight for the center. The part was split in 3 groups, as the Paladin and Bloodhunter git lucky with their random placements while another notable NPC was unlucky, and landed beside the Lich, who immediately casted finger of death on him. Long story short, the sorcerer was the "burn it all down" type, The druid spent nearly the entire fight failing to fight with an equally incompetent and unlucky undead, and the Paladin and Bloodhunter defeated a Lich at level 4, with a little help from a NAT 20 fireball from the sorcerer across the battlefield.

I do have a story of facing a dragon and hell yes i'm proud of this one.
So my step-dad was running my mom, myself, and some friends through a second edition homebrew game starting us off at level 3. Short version we wound up on a path we were 100% not supposed to be on, so my step-dad trying to wing it attempted to get us back where he initially wanted us to be... he's been playing D&D since it came and he still forgets how players are.
So we are in the middle of the woods setting up camp and getting all comfy, when we hear some crashing in the distance, come to find out a Red Dragon had caught wind of our camp fire and was apparently hungry. The horses about sh*t themselves from the fear aura and attempt to run, the Cleric (my mom) didn't have riding or animal handle animal, so attempting to control her horse she's stuck to it while it bolts and she's off screaming, a friend playing a Barbarian who'd fallen in love with the Cleric went to save her on his own, the Rogue and Ranger both took after the Cleric just trying to flee, and this is where I shine. I, playing an Elf Fighter, got on my heavy warhorse and got it under control quick and began to run with the others, but I had a thought... this Dragon can run us all down and do whatever it wants, or I can do the fighterly thing and try to draw it away from the group and go down like a freaking hero, he chose hero. He turns the horse slightly to the right and leads the dragon off knowing it would follow, 1 snack was better than risking itself for an all out fight for a meal it might not actually get. After a good bit running my fighter knew this dragon would outlast his horse, so he pulls the reigns and turns the face the monstrosity. I nor my character didn't know at the time my step-dad has gimped the dragon, a busted wing so it couldn't fly and 1 missing eye so not spectacular vision and roughly 70-75 hitpoints, he was only trying to get us away from where we were to get us back on the path he wanted... not today satan! Earlier in an underground section our NPC wizard that was helping us investigate something gave my shield continual light so we had light since literally NO ONE brought lanters or torches and we had a few humans that couldn't see in the dark, so I became the armored mag-lite, I later tied a blanket over the shield to hide the light. In this moment I ripped the blanket off the shield and over the horses eyes and charged forward with my longspear at the ready. The sudden light in the dark briefly blinded the 1 good eye the dragon had and it reeled back giving its chest to the spear, not a nat-20 but damn sure did some damage. The horse blinded didn't know when to turn or stop and wound up breaking its neck on the dragon's leg, now my fighter is stuck in CQC with this thing. We go blow-for-blow, I'm down to probably 8-12 hp and it was I think 20ish hp by the last round, I knew if I didn't kill it my character was dead, it was my turn, I take my 2 attacks and score hits with both, 1 being a crit. The party returns in time to see me having crawled up the side of this thing as it had fallen over from a debilitating leg blow, and thrust my sword straight into the ribs all the way to the hand guard, twisting the blade as it lets out one last roar of pain and slumps to the ground dead. The barbarian, sees this and basically has this heroic shine to his eyes and declares that my fighter is now party leader. We follow the very easy to track path to its lair and were instantly rich, we were now funded, morale was up, this campaign was going places. We cover it up, get back to the dragon body, Ranger and Barbarian set to work harvesting scales, hide, meat, teeth, claws, and naturally the one good eye. We were talking about it in a tavern in the next town over, my step-dad rolled to see if a Bard was there to hear us, it was, and my fighter became a local legend and level 5.

This story reminds me of something that happened during the first campaign and the campaign I’m in now. Everyone I was playing with was new and had never done a campaign so we had no idea what was going on. On our second session we were in a dungeon trying to take down a group a thieves. We kinda messed us and get captured by them and it turns out the leader had a young dragon. I forget which type of dragon it was and it’s age but it was pretty young. The guy leaves us in this room with the dragon and we start fighting . Again we were all new to DnD so we didn’t quite know have much trouble we were in. Now here’s the fun part. We have 4 members in our party when fighting this a half elf Druid, a rouge dragon born, and elf ranger, and a cleric teifling and want to know what level we were at. LEVEL ONE AND THIS DRAGON HAD 160 HIT POINTS. Every hit we took we would be very low or unconscious. I was running around using heal spells and giving my party health potions. Luckily in the same dungeon I was able to tame some puppy hell hounds who helped out a lot. We were able to find its weak spot to get more damage on it so we got it to about half health. I should probably mention that this dragon had an egg and was protecting it. I was able to convince the dragon that living in a room with a bunch of thieves was not going to be good for her and her child. My goal was to help her get out of the dungeon to freedom but soon realized she was too big so she let us kill her and trusted us with her egg. It was quite sad but looking back no idea how we did this. I think our DM probably messed some things but I don’t really care it was a lot of fun and we leveled straight up to level three.

A party member was rolling terrible in a dungeon that was meant to be a test to get their adventurer's license and near the end they faced a dragon. The bad party member actually rolled well on stealth checks and managed to get underneath the dragon, pulled out a wand that shot fireballs and shot all charges right underneath the dragon which ended up killing everyone. So the DM had to pull a Deus Ex Machina to save the game. Everyone but the bad roller got their license but they'd get to try again.

The bot part reminded me that my group divides their rolls between using roll 20 or using the dnd beyond app. I use the app because I’m fairly new and so it’s easier for me to deal with the sheer complexity of my sheet and rolls through the app. My dm can see my numbers through the game log though as can other players who did the same as me. Now the dm’s rolls are hidden but I don’t find that an issue and I don’t think anyone else does either. All seems on the level too as far as we can tell. Nothing to indicate to us that we have any red flags to even clue into. It’s a rather casual group I am in, more set on just having fun than serious rp or battles. Now it isn’t so casual that it’s a joke campaign but it is casual in that everyone is friendly with each other without being formal and also willing to make mistakes and be helpful towards each other. It’s been nice. It’s my first ever campaign I’ve been able to be a apart of and play in. I spent a lot of time researching dnd before joining and it’s been a blast. I feel good about playing.

But I ran up to the edge and cast a modified Web spell on the nearest one. It shouldn't have worked, but the dragon crit failed and the DM was feeling generous, so it tied up its wings and caused it to fall to its death. The other dragons did a WTF and booked it. We were chasing a necromancer who was escaping in a row boat back to his ship, he was out of range of bows, and no other way to catch up except the fly potion. So I suggested drink the invisibility potion with the fly potion, and drop the figurine of wondrous power:elephant on the necromancer. The look on the DM's face was priceless.

There was one time I did almost 200 points of damage to a homebrew monster because of two factors: I rolled a Nat 20 on my 4th level guiding bolt, and the grave cleric before me used his channel divinity to cause it to gain vulnerability to the next attack.
A little bit of context, we all were playing clerics of different deities and domains. I was a knowledge cleric of Asmodeus, but as a changeling I had stolen the identity of a twilight cleric of Celestian. Then there was a love cleric of the mysterious god of cones, who my character is pretending to be in love with. (I'm still working on my plan to betray him later.) There's another knowledge cleric whose god is currently unknown to me. There's two tempest clerics, one of the Stormlord, and the other of the Queen of the Depths. There's a grave cleric of the Wild Mother. And there's another twilight cleric, but I don't know which god. Our gods are currently in a dispute as to who is the best god, and so they each selected a cleric as their champion, and are pitting us together in a battle of strength, wits, and cunning. Whoever's cleric comes out on top is the winner.

20 bottles of AF is nice. Reminds me of when the players in my game dropped 2 barrels of the stuff on a goblin camp. There wasn't much left of the camp or the forest it was in after. They ended up fighting a champion of the goddess of the forest and swore to replant the forest. Since then the group has never taken the nuclear option again as nobody wanted to be the DM that had to deal with that mess again.

We did! A homebrew game, it's my buddy's world. Made up Death Dragon (embodiedment of death) I had a special hour glass that I shattered freezing time. We spent awhile coming with a plan and one of the party members had these dragon fire potions 50 or 100 of them needless to say he threw the bag of them and dealt over 300 damage. Lol

As ATD said, youtube's a great place to start, as are DnD centric Discords, especially the bigger ones. Some tips when you're playing would be to always stay in character. You might hear the DM and Rogue talking about the huge heist he pulled off last night, but your character doesn't know that and shouldn't try to confront him or do a perception check the next night to see if you'll see the Rogue run off. When in combat, start planning your upcoming turns as soon as your turn ends. You should know what you want to do, the dice you need to roll and the target you're going to affect as your turn comes up. It also helps you change your plan as combat is happening. Barbarian killed your target and your turn is up next? Hit the guy who's going to hit the cleric next turn.
Class wise, I'd recommend paladin. If you've played any RPG, specifically(for me) WoW, you know paladins can do just about anything. You can make them tanky with huge armour and health, wield devastating weapons with spells like your smites, or you can be the healer when everyone pulls something that can hit the squishy casters easier than they should. They have access to most weapons and armour and they get spells as an intro to the more magic classes of the game. They are also based around a certain god(potentially) to immerse you into the lore and they follow a set of oaths that they cannot break for a jumpstart in your roleplaying.
Lastly, check out r/rpghorrorstories. If any DM or player starts to resemble anyone there, leave that party. Most stories there end poorly because of the toxic behaviours of those involved. However, don't delve into too many of those without your own games or the stories from ATD where they end good or epicly. You don't want to go into a game with a mindset that your game will crash and burn, you want to go in hoping for the best and prepared for the worst.

The first dragon one of my characters ever killed was about a teenager, sleeping when I attacked it, and I almost died... not from the dragon but from my party member attempting to save me.
We had just hit level 2 on a couple of, what we thought were, throw away characters. Strong, healthy and stoopid. (who knew they would go on to survive and have a 4 year long epic campaign?)
We were given a quest to kill a monster that had been devouring the forest stock, thereby causing a meat shortage for a well sized village. To this end, the local magistrate gave us a single arrow of dragon slaying to help with the job... being incredibly gimped in the brains department, we set out to kill the beast bringing rope, torches, a few days rations and a grappling hook... nothing more. We had one hand axe and one dagger and conspicuously missing was any form of bow to loose said dragon slaying arrow.
We didn't figure this out until we were at the dragon's cave and about to engage the beast, so I tied the rope around my waist and told my partner in premeditated puerileness, "If you feel me tug on the rope, pull me back"... famous almost last words.
So I proceed to sneak up to the sleeping dragon and tell the DM, "I'm going to stab it in the neck as hard as I can with the arrow like a small spear". To my amazement he laughed and said roll it.
... 20 Bam! Arrow gets to do it's slaying thing! Yay! Of course, my character was so excited that he forgot to let go of the arrow and the dragon, now awake, screaming and dying, reared up into the air, taking my character with him, which of course gave quite a tug on the rope.
My partner then yanked as hard as he could in a frantic attempt to drag my character back out of harm's way, causing 20 feet of fall damage and 2 more points of collision damage from being dragged. When he got my character back to him, he thought the dragon had stomped and clawed him. My character, having only 1 hit point left and being quite unconscious couldn't tell him to stop dragging.
We got a level for that one. Crazy. And we couldn't stop laughing at the whole scene.

the DM should have been keeping track of how many alchemical weapons he gave to the party. 20 alchemist's fire is like a level 4 fireball. maybe better if there is no saving throw. dropping a bag on a sleeping dragon is pretty easy. When the dragon lost half of its hp in the surprise round, it should have run. then came back while the party looted his lair for revenge. the DM underestimated the party's DPR. greens are notorious for sneaking and picking off weaker members. but that would have been cool if it was my party that did that.

I beheaded an adult green dragon at 6th level with my barbarian rolling a nat 20, another to confirm and another as we were all shocked and I wanted to make sure Roll20 wasn’t bugged I rolled again and got a 7. I then rolled for damage and hit the thing with at least 78 points of damage, since it was a massive damage dealing blow and with those nat 20s the Dm sighed with disbelief and sadness saying I sliced through it’s neck cleanly and sent it rolling to a halt as it flung around in death throes. He was sad as he planned to have that cr12 fight last at least 5 rounds and I ended it in one. Lol made everyone’s night.

Our level 3 party defeated a young dragon last session! There were 6 of us, but the bard was insta-killed first round, and the rouge’s crossbow bolt missed, so only 4 of us did any damage to it.
We’re running the Dragon of Icespire peak. We weren’t *supposed* to kill the dragon. It tried to grab the bard’s body as a snack and fly off, so both barbarians and the Cleric got an opportunity attack round... a crit from one barbarian, and a 2nd Lvl 2 “Inflict wounds” was enough to bring it down. In a ROUND AND A HALF!
We mourned the bard, of course. But he was our only loss.
