      I remember having a full-on war with Undead circling an entire Kingdom and the party had to dismantle certain aspects of The Siege in order to get a small party out and assassinate the leader. It was pure chaos and so much fun.
      There was a giant polymorphed into a caterpillar and then dropped on a Siege engine, Midway down they dropped the polymorph

    This DM really nailed the apocalypse atmosphere with the sounds of events elsewhere in the city...brr. Felt so sorry for the survivors the party had told to go back the way they'd come, where it was "safer", only for the undead to start concentrating their attacks...

The DM could work on smaller stories, level the players up some, and then bring back the BBEG as a Lich with a group of Cultists in tow. Now, they would have to contend with zombies, cultists, and a Lich. Other possibility is to give the future players a chance to prevent those same cultists from resurrecting the OG BBEG as said Lich. I'm just tossing out possibilities. Bonus! Run the storyline on the anniversary of the original story! If the DM has a loyal enough group, they could make it the 5 year anniversary.

    Notes from a NG human Idiot;
    Greetings from lovely Restenford(it's currently raining here....)!
    It's a terrible thing when a Parent has to bury their child, so the Villian's motivation was nicely done. OP charging him off the cliff was an epic call and a well done short revenge arch, though a little premature plot-wise. Only problem i saw plot-wise was in how the Town was treated. If the disappearances were really going on for as long as that Watch Guard said, why didn't the townsfolk send for aid? In the end, it was still a good story overall.....

    When they were in the tavern and had to listen to the people's screams until dawn reminds me of a campaign I wrote for a friend of mine once. It wasn't dnd, but just a more casual roleplay adventure. Basiclly I wrote a story, he played through it, there weren't many rules. Pretty much dnd, but less complicated and set in my own setting.
    Anyway at the beginning of this particular adventure he started out in the capital city of the kingdom he was in working as black smith's errand boy. After going on a quick beginning quest to fight some bandits and retrieve stolen property, he returned to the city. It wasn't long before a large grey scaled dragon attacked the city. During it's rampage it bit the pc's mother in half and caused mayhem through out the city. In the end the kingdoms princess was kidnapped, turning it into a classic save the princess story for a little while. Anyway what reminded me of this was that in my campaign, the pc had to hide in the black smiths shop over night, listening to the screams of the town's people.
    Unfortently we never got to finish this campaign, but it was fun while it lasted.

    Oof. I remember an experience I had with a city infected with undead. One of my characters got a real bad message about his city, and after a while, he got to go back home, only to find it abandoned. Turns out some douche with the Wand of Orcus had infected his city with an undead curse, and another character-- the other ranger in the party, actually-- tried to attune to the staff and got pretty much instakilled. My DM was speechless; that wasn't supposed to happen, but that's how the staff works. Then, she came back as a zombie and we had to kill her. Again. Then our cleric was adamant that we had to get her out of the city, away from the curse's influence-- fast. As we ran out of the city, the zombies started closing in. We barely made it out alive, but the whole ordeal only lasted half a minute. I was really proud of our party for working together, but I was really sad about the other ranger's death. Then, the instant we were far away enough from the staff, the cleric threw the ranger's body on the ground, pulled out a gem, and then my friend looked up and smiled before saying, "and that's why I always have Revivify ready."

      @TarsonTalon 4 роки тому +15

      I suppose the most realistic monologue situation is when the BBEG is revealed to be something huge you weren't expecting, and causes hesitation to attack. Also other factors such as political ones should be considered. If you just attack outright, you might be considered the bad guy when there are revolutionaries fighting under you, or your party aren't the one in direct command of the battle, and other nations have interests in the outcome of the battle. In other words, you need something to rub the villain's face into.
      Another, more plausible, monologue situation is when the BBEG is on approach, and you don't know exactly where they are, but you can hear their voice mocking you, echoing off the walls, making it hard to pinpoint their origin. And at the end of the monologue, they pounce.

    I love slaughtering the BBEG. I remember playing NWN back in the day. I killed the subjective BBEG before he could get off his monologue that was meant to buy the player rebels time to escape from me. Objectively, I was probably closer to being the BBEG considering everyone had united against me. If only they knew how trash I was at PVP and all my victories were won from the shadows.

    If I may. I had a D&D character named Elucia, she was a sadistic little orphan Aasimir who was brought into a cult. Her personality started to escape her and she swore to the world that it will know her suffering. Once she learned everything she could from the cultists, she would make her escape. She grabbed the sacrificial sword and used thier necromatic magic against them, creating her first undead army. None would survive that night except her. It was interesting as she was still the monster the cult wanted to make, she would cause suffering to each town she came upon, only getting stronger, to the point where she killed a T-rex and made it her prized undead.

    That wasn't as devastating an ending as the DM thinks. It opens a world of possibilities! A group of Cultists can bring back the BBEG as a Lich. The BBEG could have had an underling that continues his mission. A completely new BBEG rises up to take over for the deceased one. Those were just 3 suggestions. It would be even better to use those suggestions after time passes. Let it come naturally over time.

    here's a quick tip to any dm that tries to do a fight with a villain where you want that villain to get away.
    GIVE THEM AN ITEM THAT ALLOWS THEM TO TELEPORT! and if at all possible also the spell.
    you need to give them an item as that way they aren't casting a spell. if you try to have them get away via spell counterspell or even something as simple as silence will stop them. probably best to also give them the spell though, otherwise you'll end up with a rogue stealing his teleporting item from him.
    and yes, my party did in fact kill the bbeg before they should. bard villain. the bastards dropped silence on him, suddenly horrifying bard turning into twat pretty good with dagger and whip.
