HONDA MONKEY BIKE - Full Restoration and Transformation Z50 J1

  • A complete restoration of a classic 1976 Honda Z50 J1 Monkey Bike from beginning to end. See the transformation of this iconic little motorbike from an old tired rust bucket to a time warp rolling off the production line beauty.
    The bike was originally made in Japan but was a French import model. From France the bike was imported in the early 80's to the U.K. where it was used for many years by a family in Cornwall. After the grandkids grew up the bike was retired to the back of a shed to get rusty and collect dust. After some back and forth with the previous owner I finally took ownership of the bike in 2016 and went about giving it the care and attention it sorely deserved.
    After the bike was completely stripped and everything that could be kept and restored was sorted out I went about sourcing every possible NOS or new Honda parts or if it wasn't available using the best quality OEM parts.
    The frame was media blasted and powder coated to its original black. For longevity I decided to powder coat the tank and forks so the powder coaters sourced the correct yellow and that was the route I went with that.
    The engine casings and any other alloy parts were vapour blasted by OLIMAT vapour blasting in Glasgow Scotland, hence the reason they all look brand new. The head was powder coated in high temperature matte black.
    The engine clutch cover and side cover were both meticulously sanded through all the grits up to the point of using the bench polisher to get them to a mirror finish.
    There is so much more involved in getting the bike to its final finished state so if you have any questions or would like to know where I get my parts etc please leave a comment.

      Thanks very much, really appreciate you saying so. There is good money in the bikes but the time it takes really balances out the profit. It's a great way to get to own a great little bike as good as the day if not better than the day it came off the production line though. Also it's great because you can do it at your own pace and buy the parts as you need them if you want to do it over a longer period. Thanks again and hope your enjoying the holidays!

      Thanks very much, its a labour of love. Keep saving and looking for something cheap to get you started then just take your time and do what you can afford. It can be expensive to do it all at once so just buy parts as you can. Good luck and thanks again, sorry its took me a while to reply!

    • @No-Pro
      @No-Pro  3 роки тому

      Hey, have a look on cmsnl.com or shirebikes.co.uk it depends what model you have, some bikes are really difficult to find the headlight. I watched eBay for a year before i found my headlight and chrome surround NOS from the states. But then I realised it was a french bike and a different headlight I needed and could have still got it new all along...doh! Lesson learned...make sure you really research your bike and it might save you some time. Ask the people at those companies, you can send them your vin number and they can double check the part fits

    • @No-Pro

      There wasn’t a chrome rack on this bike, it was optional. Also the indicators weren’t required by law in the U.K. if the bike doesn’t exceed 30mph

    • @No-Pro
      @No-Pro  5 років тому

      lulu tamargo Hi, I get my parts from CMSNL or Shire Bikes. I’m sure both companies post worldwide. There is a few companies in the States and Canada selling parts also. You’ll also come up against a brick wall at times if the part your looking for is no longer in production or rare at least. Basically when you can’t find the part you follow the search on eBay or just keep asking anyone that sells NOS parts. It can sometimes take a good long time to get the part you want so be ready for that. Hopefully you find everything you need and your build goes smooth! If you pinpoint your exact bike it will help with finding parts. If the bike was made for a certain country little things like the chrome light surround will be different so if you pin point the exact import model it will save hassle when looking at diagrams of parts distributors sell. Best of luck, let me know how you get on and feel free to ask any questions!

    • @No-Pro
      @No-Pro  4 роки тому

      Brandon Jansen Hey, I restored as many of the original parts as I could keep and the other parts I got from shire bikes in the U.K. and cmsnl in Holland. I tried to stick with genuine parts as the just fit and work better. There’s a few companies in the US and Canada I used too and apart from that just made sure to follow every search term possible on eBay, some parts took me a long time to find. The graphics I ended up getting a graphic designer to remake and got them printed myself. Best of luck with it, let me know how you get on and if you need any advice just send me a message 🏍

      NoPro do you know how to see if it is An original part they Are selling or a Reproduction?

    • @No-Pro
      @No-Pro  4 роки тому

      Brandon Jansen Original parts normally have Honda stamped on them somewhere or packaging will have Honda on it. Didn’t really see any fake stuff getting sold, just aftermarket, new Honda or new old stock (NOS)

    • @Brandon0083
      @Brandon0083 4 роки тому

      NoPro But the thing is, is there anyway to Check if you Are getting original parts or reproduction on the site?

    • @No-Pro
      @No-Pro  4 роки тому

      Brandon Jansen It should tell you that it’s an original part, normally they shout it from the rooftops. It should say OEM or NOS and generally that will be a original Honda part. Some let’s might not be made original anymore so you might have to get reproduction. If you have a Honda Motorbike dealership near you it’s also possible to speak to there service dept and if you have the part number they will tell you if it’s still in production

      That part number is from a slightly different light with the screw in the side. The bike I restored in the video was a french model and the light was slightly different. I originally thought it was a general import and it took me ages to find an original NOS light and chrome surround and cost me a small fortune, turned out I was wrong though and cmsnl told me it was a french bike originally and luckily enough they had the chrome surround part number 33101230621 I got an original NOS light and used this OE chrome surround, if the surround isn’t quite right it won’t fit perfectly. I’d speak to cmsnl and ask them to run your vin and they’ll tell you the exact bike you’ve got. I do like my light though, looks better without the little screw to hold the surround on.
