    I use a dog training clicker for this because I find the small tight peaks it generates more precise (and easier on the hands 😀). I record my video via camcorder and my audio via Camtasia along with the screen, so I need to export the audio out of my screen recordings to properly EQ it in external software; when I bring it back I line things back up to the peaks so what I'm doing corresponds with what's happening on screen. :)

      Love the dog-training clicker idea too! ("Easy on the hands" made me chuckle!)

    I recorded the Audio and the video on separate devices, and when I put the two files into my editing software, the video portion goes several minutes longer than the Audio, so even though I can sync the beginning, it is not long before they do not match up... any ideas as to why this happened?

    • @wahnano
      @wahnano Рік тому

      The audio and video should match up in terms of timing and should be aligned accurately. You can use various methods to synchronize audio and video tracks, such as using clapperboards or syncing audio based on visual cues. Once your audio and video tracks are synced, you can start editing them together on the timeline. This can include trimming the length of both tracks, adding transitions between clips, adjusting audio levels, and applying various effects to both tracks.

For example I can sync them in first second (using your method) but after 10-20 minutes audio is completely out of sync. Could you help me with that ?

    So I would be recording audio from USB mic in a closet to reduce all background noises and then plan to shoot video with a phone. I'm not clear how syncing would work? I would definitely need a detailed script and while shooting video, do a lip sync while reading it out and listening to the pre recorded audio in my headset. Will this small plan work?

    Yeah just recorded drums for a TikTok and used a video recorder and a separate audio interface. When a fellow drummer checked it out, at first he commented sounds good. Then he said in a separate post "NM I just saw the end- which was out of sync. I think he believed it wasn't me at all at that point. Frustrating, but I will see if I can see the audio track from the camcorder next time and try to line them up. Chopping the sections somewhat worked but when I rendered it to FB it fell out of sync again. Different resolutions etc.

    I used the clap method and the audio starts out in synch but slowly gets further off as the video goes on. Any advice for that?

    • @techsmith
      @techsmith  3 роки тому

      Depending on a number of factors, re-syncing is still needed occasionally. A few reasons for that may be:
      - Frame rate (24fps, 30 fps, 60fps?)
      - Audio Sample Rate (44.1 kHz, 48 kHz?)
      - Duration of video (2 minutes? 2 hours?)
      If you're using an audio recorder that allows you to select your audio sample rate, we'd recommend selecting 48kHz as that's usually most compatible for recording video & audio together.

    I find if I record a webcam with Camtasia it is slow and out of sync in the editor which makes editing difficult alongside other elements. So now I just record the webcam video - put that into camtasia and render it out as an mp4 then I can use it in a project as just one media element and all the delays are gone.

    Recording my tablet screen with camtasia and using a bluetooth mic so I can move around the room, if necessary, while lecturing. Over the course of the 50 min class, the audio and video become unsynced for some reason. The video begins to noticeably lag the audio. Trying to determine the best way to resync. Is there an easy way to record audio and video on the same track?

    • @techsmith
      @techsmith  3 роки тому

      Yes and no. You can do that, and the video and audio will come in as one source if say you're recording the Webcam and Microphone together. However, this is less about software or hardware and more about audio/video recording speeds. Audio records in kHz and video records at fps and they just don't PERFECTLY line up so over time we tend to notice them drifting. The best way to fix this on longer videos is to (do what you're probably doing and) find where it happens, split the audio and shift it the few frames back into phase.

    • @techsmith

      I'd recommend that you make your adjustment, then export a test clip, not the entire video, to see if the audio looks synced. If not, adjust again, re-export a test clip again. Some video editors rendering time in the background makes things look like they're in sync, when they're still off.

      First: please make sure you check for software updates (Mac -> Camtasia 2023 (menu) -> Check for Updates" OR "Help -> Check for Updates" on Windows) in case this was a known bug that's already been addressed, that shoudl help.
      Second: If Camtasia IS up-to-date and still not displaying waveform, is it playing back audio when you press play? You can hear it? Then make sure you've closed Camtasia and re-opened the project (if you haven't already) and if that doesn't cover it I'd want to make sure you submit a ticket with our Technical Support team so they can log it and take a look at getting you a fix: bit.ly/techsmith-help

    Help
    The film I am working on is video without audio. These films are interviews recorded in the 1970s. The transfer house created two folders: one for .Move and another folder for Audio.
    The photographer used a camera (Super 8 film) without using on board mic. However, the photographer did record the 400 interviews using cassette tape. The are no markers, no claps, nothing of use on the audio files. When I import a film (Premiere Pro CC2021) I then import the audio associated with the film. The transfer house said I would need to work on syncs, manually. And that I would need to possibly slow down, speed up, the audio track whilst working. I am having no success attempting to manually synch. It's as the the subject is simply talking monotone without stopping - and finding a reference point to link is difficult. Is there a solution? I don't mind the time just need to sync. Even thought I should hire a lip reader to help out. Let me know what to do. Thanks!

    • @techsmith
      @techsmith  3 роки тому

      This sounds incredibly difficult, but have you tried starting at the end of the interview? Does the cassette stop when the interview is over or does it roll on into the next interview? If they're separated by interviews, you may have some luck working backwards. But that is a really tough one unfortunately. Could could look for coughs or long gaps, but this sounds like a big task. Hopefully something we suggested helps!

    Question. Some You Tube videos that USED to be synched have gone out of synch in the last few years drastically.. The videos are precious and unique and the original uploader has died. Is there anything I can do, *if* I can get hold of all th audio and all the video to fix it and reupload?

    • @techsmith

      If you don't have the original file, or a way to download the video from UA-cam (you'd need admin privileges to that account), I'm not sure what could be done. But yes, if you can get that video, you can follow the steps above, look for a visual cue to the audio (is there a clap? snap? Click of the tongue?) that will help you separate the audio from the video and realign.

      If it's narration, cut between "paragraphs" of narration. If the person stops speaking but the video continues, cut their audio, and shift it down in the timeline to where you'd like it to start again.

    • @techsmith

      Yep! Whatever the project fps is set to (30 or 60) the other clip will likely just convert to when it's dropped on the timeline. It may not be perfect, but that should absolutely be doable.

      Plural Eyes is a go-to synching solution for many. Some NLE's (Premiere/FCPX) have synching built into the software. In Camtasia, it's still a manual process, but not a difficult one as shown in the video.

      Glad we were able to help! Audio and video can be problematic the longer you record too, since video records in frames-per-second (fps) and audio records at kHz and they're naturally (slightly) different rates of playback. Sometimes a few minutes after you made your initial adjustment you need to re-align by a few frames again.

I recorded the audio and video at the same time, I did the clap, but while I can get close, I get more of an Elvis 1950's slap back (maybe not that bad) but I've been able to drag and drop before. Where is the setting to let me go 100% freestyle?

    • @techsmith
      @techsmith  4 роки тому

      The only thing I can think of is make sure you're zoomed all the way in to the frame-by-frame level on the timeline and see if that gives you a bit more freedom. If Timeline Snapping is off and you're zoomed all the way in and still can't get it I'm not sure what else could be going on, other than maybe recording at an odd mHz like 41 instead of 48? But then we'd be diving pretty deep into the technical side.
      Sometimes I've had luck shifting the audio a frame or two BEFORE the video. So they're out of sync, but we see things before we hear them (speeds of light v. sound) and that can help, but it's not a perfect solution.

    • @techsmith
      @techsmith  3 роки тому

      Andy here, while I haven't tried the specific free methods you're talking about, as long as you can add multiple tracks you should be able to try matching up your waveform audio. They will look VERY different of course. One will have a lot of background noise most likely (from the camera depending on how far from the speakers it was) and the sound board audio should be pretty clear. Depending on when each source started recording, it MIGHT be easier to try lining them up from the end of the wedding, the recessional, since that will be music toward the end of each recording and will be an easier match point.
      Good luck!

    Sometimes when I wish to edit screencast recording created by Camtasia, I find the need to replace ONE SEGMENT of whole Audio by another by using Voice Narration, but the problem is how to get a smooth transmit between old audio and new audio created by Voice Narration option, so I ask if there is an ability in either Camtasia or may be another software like Audacity to accomplish this function so that I can export all segments from Camtasia to Audacity for instance

    • @techsmith
      @techsmith  4 роки тому

      To match the sound from one narration to another you'll want as close to the same setting as possible when you record. Make sure you're in the same room, same distance to your microphone and of course same intonation in your voice. But our audio effects won't capture the same sound tones and room noise and be able to match with an effect necessarily.

    • @techsmith
      @techsmith  2 роки тому +1

      One technical aspect we didn't discuss in the video is if you're using an audio recorder make sure it's set to 48kHz as opposed to 44.1kHz. 48kHz is better aligned with frames-per-second video recording, but it's still not perfect. Longer recording especially can become out of sync the longer they run.But adjusting it by a few frames every so often (though tedious) can fix projects that seem to keep coming out of sync.

      And you're trying to time them together? Having no visual/audible clues as to whether the content is in time can be tricky. Do the beats need to match the visuals or something? At that point, you may just have to zoom WAY in on the timeline, find the spot you want the audio to hit, and watch the waveform on the timeline to match it to your visual cue.

    I am new to creating videos, and want to make reasonably high quality UA-cam videos to promote my business. I am familiar w DAWs, have good audio interface and studio quality mics (Shure and Neuman). Know nothing about video. Bought a Fuji XT200 and a camlink, so I have 1080/4K video and 44.1KHz/16 bit audio sources, but I have no idea how to record them. I tried the "clapper" method, recording the video onto the memory card and the audio into the DAW, and then syncing it up. I am new so this is not easy. I hoped to find a single program that would record at least 1080 video and 44.1/16 audio straight in. I tested my gear w quicktime, which did exactly what I wanted but the quality, esp for audio, was not there. I was just looking at Camtasia to see if it is the single program I am looking for. Or am I just better off recording separately and then syncing them up in editing. But if that is the case, what would Camtasia do? I am ready to start shooting as soon I can figure out the little problem of actually recording the @#I(%)@# things

Your free trial will export with a watermark, but any work you complete during the free trial is still good to be exported without the watermark after if you decide to purchase a license key. So give it a test run! Depending on your system you may find there's a delay between the two, then record them together, right click your clip in the timeline to separate audio and video, and move them into sync. I have to manually sync them up but I have a hard time figuring out if I need to move the audio ahead or back. For example I know the audio is playing ahead of the video and you would think that if I move the audio back it would then be closer but then it is even more out of sync. I really just have to spend maybe a half an hour per clip just moving the tracks back and forth, ahead and behind the video in an attempt to eventually get them synced. Hmm, the problem with an audio recorder in the center of the hall is you're getting a lot of residual sound from the acoustics. Which, I agree, is essential to opera recording. The problem is going to be matching that to a recording (iPhone) that doesn't have nearly the same reverb in it since you've placed it (I assume) nearer to the stage with less echo/ambience. There are a lot of considerations here, for example what frame rate is your video? 24? 30? 60? And what kHz is your audio recorder set to? 44.1? 48? Video and Audio don't ever truly record perfectly together, and with the acoustics of the hall you've added another barrier.
      One trick I'd suggest is record VIDEO using TWO phones instead of one phone and one audio recorder. You don't need the video from the phone sit in the middle of the hall, but you will get matching frame rates and kHz that way, and should have an easier time syncing. I hope that helps!

      @@techsmith OK, so I tried it out and the problem with fixing audio drift is that the tool to stretch the time of the audio so that it syncs with the video (although it works nicely) changes the pitch of my voice -so much that it sounds like another person is speaking/singing! Any help is appreciated!

    • @techsmith
      @techsmith  3 роки тому

      @@GreenGoddessofGaia The pitch shifts? It sounds like you may have selected the Clip Speed effect, is that right? I wouldn't use that. You should just be grabbing the clip itself and shifting the placement on the timeline in conjunction with the second clip (as shown in the video above). If Clip Speed DOES work and that's what you want to do, try also adding the "pitch" effect and setting it to '0' to start. But I wouldnt' adjust the speed, that shouldn't be the solution.

    Andy, thanks for the video...my issue is when I edit, all the video and audio are in sync, but when I export to an mp4 format they are out of sync. Any suggestions to avoid this? Should I try doing an upload to my UA-cam channel instead of saving local?

    • @techsmith
      @techsmith  3 роки тому

      When you export are you changing anything about the settings? Such as a different frame rate? (Maybe you filmed in 30 but exported in something else?). Make sure all of your settings are the same as your sequence/timeline settings.

    I use “the clap” 😃 and I always start in sync. But if I Split video and audio tracks (to make room for transitions) - sometimes they are out of sync after the split ... Solution: I’m seldom on camera, but mainly show my screen (I’m an IT instructor and uses Camtasia for my online IT cources). 😃🇩🇰

    Recorded with camtasia and it's not totally synced anyway🤔

    • @techsmith
      @techsmith  11 місяців тому

      That's most likely a hardware issue. Not saying it's not a problem IN Camtasia, but I (Andy here) have had the same issue when I record with a mic from one USB input, and a camera from a separate USB input (and HDMI converter).
      The only fix I've really found is recording my audio/video with one source, so I've connected a mic through my camera's audio input and have had more success that way.
      But if that isn't possible, knowing how to sync the audio/video is helpful.

      Thanks for the reply! I did try to sync the video but found it very stressful as it seems like it gets off synced again if I zoom out in the timeline. Also I experience that the sound is off synced when I move forward in the video with the playhead...as if the video would need to be split into different clips in order to be able to sync it. I mean I synced it in the beginning and then moved a few minutes in the timeline to find that footage off synced even if it's the same clip@@techsmith

    Audio and video got out of sync because video capture software on Apple IOS is BUGGY, even the paid apps running on the latest high-end phones. There are constant audio problems with the likes of FilmicPro and MoviePro that the developers have never bothered to fix... or it's Apple's defective camera API. All that matters is the endless audio sync problems that are time-consuming to fix in Adobe Premier.

    • @techsmith
      @techsmith  3 роки тому

      (Andy here) I'd be surprised if this is something that EVER sees a real fix to be honest. Since audio records in kHz and video records in FPS and the two aren't exactly cross-compatible, there will always be some nuance to syncing these thing when they're recorded separately.

    Camtasia audio is not great. I can record the same mic through the same interface into a DAW and its much better. If Camtasia put more time into sound and added support for VST's it would be even more amazing that it is right now. Most things are easy, but this area is a bit lacking compared to video that seems to get all the attention.

      At its core it's just lining up the waveform with the footage, so it's pretty similar globally. But if you need a program to use, yeah, we've got your back. (Also, this is TechSmith's channel...and since we make Camtasia...shouldn't be too surprising). :)

    Most software has a built in way to do this. Just select tracks and click synch. Your asking us to clap our hands? Ugh. Hopefully you have a better way now seeing that his video is two years old. Your behind the times. Your software often records out of sync anyway. My screen recordings always, 99% of the time are at least 3-5 frames off. So how about fixing that issue? It is a known issue. Lots a videos out there about camtasia and audio synch issues. Nothing new here.
