Could you talk more about the densified bamboo material? It's been really interesting to hear you discuss different ebony alternatives over the years. I'm just starting to tinker at carving elements of string instruments and would be interested in this material. Thanks!

why does the wood of the top look like it is cut off the quarter?

thats because he normally uses reclaimed wood for his violins and he doesnt normally worry about that and it doesnt seem to matter that much

The top material is awfully important usually. The guitar maker Torres actually made an instrument out of paper mache except for the top which was carefully made from good spruce. It was said to play well. Then again who knows.

My thought is that everything on a violin really matters, even small things can change an instrument you know well. Even changing the chin rest or tuner can change it. That said, it can important or not depending on the player and the circumstances.

That's because it's very carefully considered slab cut timber. Not uncommon in backs and not unheard of in fronts. Beautiful light, stiff and resonant English cherry which grew about two miles from the workshop. Good to try these things rather than just repeat the usual dogma, there's more than one way to skin a cat. (Sorry, couldn't resist getting cat and dogma in the same sentence..).

Indeed! Slab cut tops made out of anything but spruce are pretty unusual.
